Help Installing My New Airport Extreme

So I bought a AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi but I'm not really sure how to hook it up. The Main computer is a dell with windows xp media center and my mac is a G5. the first thing i need to know is which computer to i hook the router up to the main pc or the mac?

Depends on where you want to put the Extreme. For setup, either machine will be able to set it up once you fire up AirPort Utility to configure it. Just follow the setup manual. Ideally, if you need Extreme to create the wireless network, you will place the Extreme near you internet broadband modem.

To configure a new 802.11ac Extreme requires AirPort Utility for iOS or AirPort Utility for OS X.

I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

  • Installed my new Airport extreme and try to link it to airport express  but the wifi still very slow

I installed my new Airport extreme today and try to link it to my airport express to expend my wifi coverage to my second floor  but the wifi si very slow on second florr not better then without express? what can I do??

    Hi Francois
Any wired connection or WiFi network extension (using your AirPort Express) with your second floor will make your network signal stronger but not necessarly faster.  If your WiFi signal is so poor that internet connection keeps dropping, it will make a speed difference.  Otherwise the only difference you'll notice is that the range of the wireless network has increased.
You say "wifi is very slow on the second floor".  Do you mean that the internet is slow?  Is it very fast on the first floor?
Try checking your internet connection speed on a laptop on each floor:
    speedtest.net
and press "begin test recommended server".
The download speed should approximate your ISP contracted speed.  Upload speed will be a fraction of this.  Wifi will be slower but unless you have a super-fast internet connection, you probably shouldn't notice it.

  • After we installed a new airport extreme, the imac running snow leopard displays black box msgs saying to hold down the power button and or the reset button and then restart your computer. Can anyone provide info that can help resolve this issue?

Experiencing similar issues on both imac and power book: after replacing an original airport extreme with a new airport extreme both computers display a black box msgs that reads: "...turn off your computer by holding down the power button and or the reset button for a few seconds and then restart your computer."...
one of the printers are usb'd to the imac. The printer is not "seeing" the imac nor will it print wireless from the powerbook which was the norm prior to the upgrade on the airport extreme.
Upon restart, the imac does not "see" the wireless keyboard or the mouse until it is "found" again.
At this time the imac or the powerbook can get on line.

It sounds like your computer is getting Kernel Panics. Please look at About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages and if the message seen on your display is like the one in the link then you have confirmed you had a KP. KP's can be tough to track down because they can be caused by software or hardware. The first place to start is to post the complete crash log so we can look at it, often there are clues in the log. • Help please with new airport extreme

    hello,
my mother is using comcast internet and she wanted to add a wireless router. all the had before i went and got her a ae was the comcast modem with a ethernet wire coming out of it and going right into her laptop. i then installed the software for the router and have it wired up witch was the easy part. now i have the solid green light on the ae and my laptop (macbook pro) and her dell laptop both say we have wireless signal but nether computer can connect to the internet. both computers have full signal and they are even placed next to the ae so its not a long distance problem. what might be wrong here. again the green light is steadly on and the airport says full signal and so does the dell laptop. please help

On the MBP, open Airport Utility, select the Airport Extreme from the left and press the manual select button. Once the Summery screen appears check the last line. If the IP address begins with 169, select the Internet tab from the top of the Airport utility window, and make sure the Connect Using is set to Ethernet and the IPv4 setting is Using DHCP. If those are the settings unplug the power from the modem and make sure all the lights go out (if you have a digital phone package with the cable company the power light may stay on in which case you'll need to remove the batteries from the modem) let that sit for 2 min and then power back on. That should reset the cache of the modem and solve you problem.

  • Network Printing broken on New Airport Extreme

I have just installed a new airport extreme to my lan.. There is a network printer also attached to the lan (Xerox 6200N). Previously when I had an airport express attached, all computers connected to the network via the airport were able to access this printer... Now that I switched to the new Airport extreme -- NONE of the computers on the wireless network even "see" the printer... Computers that are physically connected can still print...
    Help would be MOST apprecited.
    Thanks.
    Rob

No - the printer is attached to a router. The network is set up like this:
    DSL modem to router
Router to Networked printer (Xerox 6200N)
Router to older G4 minitower (without airport card)
    Router to new Airport extreme.
Previously the same exact network cable was attached to an airport express --- no problems printing to the printer.
Just set up the Airport extreme yesterday --- no problems with the internet but doesn't recognize printer...
(FYI - DSL is static IP --- which I need for the G4 minitower because it acts as a server for my calenndar program --- the computer then is set to share it's internet connection via the sharing preferences)
    Thanks.

  • Old Airport Express, New Airport Extreme, Air Tunes - No joy

    I'll try to be brief:
Have a Mini, that was running 10.3, and using an old Airport extreme to enable Air Tunes to a stereo in another room. All was well.
Updated the Mini to Leopard. Installed a new Airport Extreme. Did this so a new Macbook in the family could have a wireless internet connection. The new Macbook sees the new Airport extreme and is happy.
Open iTunes on the Mini, try to Air Tunes the music to the stereo.... No joy. iTunes says it can't find the Airport Express.
So I begin a LONG string of stuff to try to get the Express to be seen by something, anything...
Failing all attempts, I do a factory reset. The express now wants a password, won't take "public", does take the old password (which you would think would not be the case with a factory reset), but after churning a while the set up utility tosses and error that it can't connect. I even hooked the little buzzard up to the Extreme with a cable. Can't configure the Express.
Tried updating the Express's firmware. (its on 6.1). The updater sees it, but fails when trying the update.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.

Did you try hooking it up with your mini (with cable)?
    Richard.

  • Configuring a new Airport Extreme with an existing Wireless Modem Router

I have an existing Wireless Modem Router (brand: Riger) and have an existing wireless network. Recently purchased an AirPort.
What is the best way to install a new AirPort Extreme? I know i have to connect the AirPort Extreme to the modem via ethernet cable.
Do i allow the AirPort to use the existing setting from my old wireless modem router?
Or do i create a new network with different name and password?
Anybody can help or show me where i can look up on this?
    Thanks

Hello akramaziz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) will be connected to the existing Wireless Modem Router by Ethernet, it should be reconfigured as a bridge.
(ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
As a bridge, the AEBSn will allow the existing router to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients.

  • New Airport Extreme, new problems.

Hi all. I have just purchased and installed a new airport extreme and am having some issues with it already. Last night during install, When it got to the end of the setup process, the computer screen said that the Airport extreme was to restart. Well, that seemed to take forever, and then the airport that was visable from the Airport utility disappeared. The Green light on the unit was on, indicating no problems, but I was not able to access the internet. I played with it for a while, and tried resetting and going through the set up 2 more times, with the same result. I had given up and was going to contact apple in the morning when suddenly my Ipad received a message from my friend who had sent the message about an hour before. I assumed that the internet was now working, which I confirmed with my Ipad and my Imac. All seemed ok. I even downloaded the Airport app for my I pad and could see the device from the screen.
Today, my Ipad's airport app could not see the device, yet the network was working. Is this typical?
Also, can you hide the SSID (network name). My last wireless router had this feature, which I thought was nice.
Last thing. I can't seem to print from my wireless printer any more. My previous router worked fine for this. It now says it is not connected any more. The network name and password are the same with this Airport as my last router, so I figured it shoud work fine. In the manual, it doesn't seem to mention wireless printing, only printers connected to the Airport with a USB. Does it only work that way?
Sorry for all the questions. If This thing is not going to co-operate, it will be returned to the store. I normally love Apples products, but this one has me scratching my head in doubt.

First you can block the SSID, you need to go into Airport Utility and click on wireless then click the wireless network options and make sure the Create a closed network is selected.  Regarding the iOS Airport Utility that could have sometimes.  On your printer the Airport Extreme has a USB connector that you can connect a printer to it.  It you want to add the printer to the network wirelessly then you may need to go in to you printer setup.

  • I own an imac 2011 running osx 10.6.8. I want to the new airport extreme. but it says in the system requirements that it needs osx lion 1.7.5 or later. would it work with my older osx 10.6.8?

i own an imac 2011 running osx 10.6.8. I want to buy the new airport extreme but it says in the system requirements that it needs osx lion 10.7.5 or later. would it work with my older osx 10.6.8?

In order to set up and install the new AirPort Extreme:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
would it work with my older osx 10.6.8?
Yes, if you set up the new AirPort Extreme using the guidelines above. The 10.6.8 Mac will be able to connect to the AirPort Extreme, but it will not be able to make any configuration changes.
Only the devices listed above can be used to set up and make any changes to the new AirPort.

  • New Airport Extreme  - can't see old Airport Express

I've succesfully installed my new airport extreme but the old airport express is not visible anywhere. What is the procedure to connect it to the network?

Do a factory reset. Unplug the Express, take a paper clip or ball point pen, depress the reset button and hold it in while you plug your Express back into a power outlet. The light will blink green a couple of times and then blink amber rapidly. When the amber light stop blinking and stays solid, you can release the reset button. Give it s a few minutes to recycle. Then open Airport Utility (I assume when you say that you installed your new Extreme you mean the 802.11n. If you mean the Extreme g, use Airport Setup Assistant. Once it opens it should scan and your Express will show up with its factory ID. You can use the Utility to set it up.

  • Does the new Airport Extreme work with Airport Express??

I just installed the new airport extreme and I can't get my airport expresses to function as a part of the network. Does anyone know how to get past this? Do the expresses work with the new extreme?

I assume this issue is true for both Express base stations ... that is, that their status lights go to solid amber when removed from the Extreme base station. A solid amber would indicate that the base station has failed to reinitialize with its "new" configuration.
The only recommendation I have at this point, is to start over with just a single Express. Perform a "factory default" reset on both the Extreme and the Express. Leave them both powered-off after they complete their respective resets.
Power-up the Extreme. Leave it in its default configuration which is to broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Connect the Express to one of the available LAN ports on the Extreme, and then, plug the Express into power.
Your Mac should shortly "see" the new base station in the AirPort drop-down menu from the OS X menu bar. Select this new station and the AirPort Utility should start up. Use the utility's automated steps to configure the Express to extend the Extreme. Allow the Express to restart.
Now remove the Express from power, and then, disconnect it from the Extreme. Place the Express in another location in the same room and plug it back into power. Does it eventually give you a green status light?

  • My new Airport Extreme will not allow access to a Microsoft Exchange server

I just installed a new Airport Extreme at home and now I cannot access my work e-mail which is on a Microsoft Exchange Server.  If I go back to my old wi-fi Access Point my work e-mail comes in and out with no problems, but when I hook the Airport Extreme it keep saying the connection is bad and to check the e-mail username and password.

If you setup the AE wrongly, as a router when you already have a router, then you must bridge the AE. Apple nowadays reckon they should be top dog and force the AE to router mode.. unfortunately this is wrong on at least 50% of the setups and their support says double NAT doesn't matter.. well it does matter.
You can do a simple test.. traceroute 8.8.8.8 from terminal or network utility.
If you find two separate private IP addresses the AE is setup wrongly and it must go to bridge mode.
Eg.. here is mine.. you will note there is hop 1, the main router.. 192.168.2.254 and the next hop is internet IP.
What you want to avoid is 10.0.1.1 and then 192.168.1.1 or any other combo of private IP addresses.
If the AE is setup correctly and there is only a single private IP in the traceroute then you have a different issue.
The AE is blocking the ports required for you to access your mail.
You will need to setup manual port forwarding to get this working. There is no firmware fix as this issue is in every firmware for the AC version AFAIK, but certainly if you are trying on previous firmware check for upgrade.
Port forwarding check what ports are required..

I am a first time user of the new airport extreme time capsule 2TB. I use a macbook pro and imac. I installed the router today and got on wirelessly. BUT I cannot get my 2 printers that were previously wireless to find the router signal. The worked fine on my current set up OS Mounitain Lion 10.8.4.  Apple tells me it is the printer mfr issue and printer companies tell me it is apple issue. Any help appreciated.

    Arguably, they're both right.
Changing your router changes everything, so your best course of action is to research the respective printer's documentation and determine how to reset them to factory default condition. Then, add them again using System Preferences > Print & Scan.
For that, I recommend you first "reset the printing system" according to these instructions: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system. Its instructions for Lion are identical to those for Mountain Lion.
As the article states, it will remove all your existing printers, leaving the Mac's printing system in a similar "factory default" condition ready for you to create a new print queue for each printer, which you should probably do.
Apple's printing support documents contain a great deal of redundancy, but this one may be a good place to start: OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer to print wirelessly
