  • Help Installing Solaris 10 on Sony vaio laptop which shipped with Vista

    Hello All,
I am very new to solaris. As part of first step of learning i am trying to install solaris on my laptop, as it already downgraded from Vista to XP. Now my laptop is loaded with XP i am planning to install solaris as a dual boot.
Can anybody guide me or suggest me how to walk through the installation process.
I have encountered an issue while trying to install installing ( it is unable to detect the harddisk of my laptop, i am unable to find out the root cause i have two options in mind, 1) there is no unpartitioned space left for solaris to install & the 2) is SATA disabling.
    Help is highly appretiated.
    Thanks,
    Naveen.

    From my (admittedly limited) experience:
    1) It's not a matter of merely no unpartitioned space; the installer would still see the drive.
    2) SATA is not a showstopper. I installed on a 500 GB SATA drive on an HP XW4400 workstation that has an Intel 82801G SATA controller. However, when I first tried to install, I got to the list of target drives and the list was blank as if I had no drives. I went into the bios setting of the workstation and changed 'SATA emulation' from "AHCI" to "IDE" and then Solaris installed just fine.

  • Help Installing Solaris on a windows XP computer

    Hello,
I just downloaded the Solaris 10 O/S and burned it to a CD to install it. However, I need help on installing it and setting up my hard drive and bios for dual booting. How do I do that?
I have seen that Fedora 6 has a partitioning program to automatically resize and partition the hard drive, as well as a program to setup dual booting. Does Solaris have these programs or do I have to use a program like partition magic? Would someone help me setup my system so that I can successfully install Solaris, dual boot and not lose Windows XP and my existing files. Thank you

    hi RTCXiR
recently I installed Solaris 10 11/06 dual boot with Win XP on a single hard drive & as a newbie it took me a while so I posted detailed steps on this same forum afterwards:

?I am trying to install Solaris 10 using windows xp with hyperterminal.. I have tried to locate simple steps that would help me with this process. Can anyone help me with this?

The first step before we start Solaris installation depends on how you can connect to the platform. Please check in your platform documentation if you should use a specific connection type to connect to your machine console. Is a service processor or service controler available ?
Then when this step is done, you can follow this documentation : Oracle Solaris 10 1/13 Installation Guide: Basic Installations - Oracle Solaris 10 1/13 Installation Guide: Basic Instal…

  • Help install solaris 10 on dell 430SC

tried without success install solaris 10 on dell 430SC.
the installation hangs at the very begining with no
    appreant errors . any suggestions?thanks.

    I couldn't get Solaris 10 to install.
However, I downloaded the Solaris express 11 b24 and that installs fine. It runs the 64 bit kernel :) No problems so far.
The graphics for the SC430 is a little odd. We use the SUN window system (not XOrg) and select the XF84Intel driver for the card. This works fine, trouble is it tends to like to start in a very high res mode i.e 1600xmnnnn. Run KDM config and drop the resolution.
This release uses the grub boot loader which is different but good.

  • Need help installing Solaris 10

    Hello expert,
I installed solaris 10 on my Ultra 2 box a few months back, for learning purposes, then I stopped using it. NOW I FORGOT ALL THE PASSWORD, INCLUDING ROOT PASSWORD.
I want to resintall solaris 10, but how do i get to the ok prompt if I don't remember the root password?
Please let me know if there is any other way that I can reinstall solaris from scratch.
    thanks for all your help

This question is asked in these forums about every six weeks.
    It's answered every time.
Most of the answers are finally....
    Use Google.
    search with solaris root password
see 2 milion results from such a search
    the information isn't a secret
(you won't need to go beyond the first page of search results.)
Google does indeed work for this issue.
Oh, and have your OS installation CD's ready.
You'll need them to repair your computer.
... and yes, you can repair it without reinstalling anything.

  • Help installing solaris 10 on macbook pro 2009 15 inch 2.66

I'm using bootcamp to install this. When I start the installation, it's fine. I choose the second option (can't recall the name right now) and proceed to the point where it says to choose a language. At this point, my keyboard and trackpad is COMPLETELY unresponsive. I cannot do a thing and had to force eject the DVD to get it to boot to OS X. I am tempted to quit trying to make Solaris work and go to Linux. Please help!

Boot Solaris with "output-device=ttya" (edit the bootflags in grub using the interactive menu commands) and it will install just fine.

  • NEWBIE NEED HELP INSTALLING SOLARIS 8

I have a Sparc 20 workstation and having difficulty setting the OS. I have download the installation CD and the 2 software CDs. During the installation, when it gets to the kiosk, there should be a welcome screen asking to insert the first software cd. I have never get to this point. All I receive is a warning. If and when I reboot the sparc, the following error shows " time out waiting for ARP and RARP packet.

Thnx for all the help guys. After reading through the forum, I have managed to solve my issue. This is how I install the Solaris 8 on my sparc 20 workstation.
    1. Put in the "First Software CD". Don't network it yet, do it after the installation.
    "NOTE: IGNORE THE INSTALLATION CD."
    2.Reboot the machine.
    3. If the OS does not boot up, type boot disk1 and press enter
    4. Type in root and password on login screen
    5. Put in the "Second Software CD" when prompted." If the second cd does not read, follow the instruction and select REBOOT.
    6. Once the machine reboot, double click on the CDROM drive and install the 2nd Software CD.
Once you do these 6 steps, all is done. Now you just go back and configure it to a server.

  • Needed help in Installing Solaris 10 on sparc box from windows remotely

    Hi All,
I have few Sun Ultra Sparc boxes. I m accessing them only through putty session(serail port) from my windows system.
Now there is a need for me to install Solaris 10 in the sparc box. But the sparc box doesn't have any DVD drive. I have an external DVD drive.
Can somebody help me out to install Solaris on the sparc box with the components I have.
    1) Windows system with putty
    2) External DVD drive
    3) Sun sparc box.
    Thanks for your help,
    T.R.Santhosh

If you run into a problem that causes the machine not to boot, you can't interact with it via putty. You'd need a physical connection, usually either the keyboard and screen or a serial connection. I would always plan to be able to do so during an upgrade.
If you have sufficient disk space, the easiest thing to do would be to copy over the DVD iso, then mount it up with lofi, and do a live upgrade.
Windows doesn't read rockridge format disks. I would worry that having the windows machine read the ISO filesystem and send the files over would cause name issues. That's why getting the full ISO and mounting it locally on the Sparc is best. Fortunately, it doesn't require a physical drive.

  • Total newbie needs help installing and setting up Solaris 10 as a server

i'm attempting to set up one computer to act as a file and print server on my home network, so that i can store all of my music and video files on it instead and print to my parallel-only laser printer. 80% of the time i'm using my laptop, so i need the mass storage and printer to be handled by another device - the server!
i'm not sure if i'm even installing Solaris 10 correctly. how should it be installed to then act as a server? my two (incredibly long, like 3+ hours each) install attempts so far have resulted in an OS that looks like a nice fancy GUI-laden desktop which doesn't appear to show me my 750G SATA storage drive (the OS is on a 40G IDE drive).
in the end, i'd like to have the system working so that my only interaction with it is the power button - press it once to power it on and it'll boot up and long in automagically and make itself seen over the network (with printer and files stored on drives accessible to my laptop or any other PC that's on the same network), and then press the power button again to shut down the entire system gracefully (so far, when i press the power button, it's a quick kill like pulling the power cord - i'm pretty sure that's a bad way of having the system shut down, so how do i change it?)
i'm really hoping to use Solaris due to the promising ZFS scheme. my only exposure so far to unix / linux has been with ubuntu, which i usually like but sometimes loathe (primarily file permissions and network manager).

Let's try step by step rather than asking for setting up a server as a while and I'll try to help you as much as I can.
For setting up a printer, it's not that easy or quick setting up a printer on Solaris, I mean it's not like plug-n-play. Tell us about your printer and how it's connected to your system (usb, ethernet, parallel, serial).
As for shutting down the system, it's recommended to use the shutdown commnad like this:
    # shutdown -y -i0 -g0
    --gibb

    Hello,
first of all: Try to run the HCTS (Hardware
Compatibility Test Suite) first, it's available
    here:
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.htm
    l
This you can run from Windows, and it will list all
hardware that has drivers, and all those, that do not
have drivers (including some public domain drivers).
After that, you have the possibility to install
Solaris WITHOUT a GUI, use one of the two "terminal"
modes. The first Is still a GUI, as it only starts X
and opens a terminal, in which then the installer
runs. The second does NOT start X, but runs the
installer on the console. Try this one, and once you
get through that, you can afterwards figure out the
    settings of the Xserver.Hi ,
i have installed the solaris using console.
Still GUI is not starting, the moniter is switched off when GUI gets started
I used Hardware Compatibility Test Suite, its say that system is supported
    by Solaris.
Should i have change BIOS setting to stated the system

    Hi,
At the ok prompt, type 'printenv' make sure the last variable 'diag-switch' is set to false. If its true, set it by using setenv diag-switch? false
also, what is your boot-device set to? is it disk, can you see your disk?
try 'probe-scsi' to make sure you have a disk to boot off. It may be your disk is not bootable, therefore its trying to boot off the network
    Hope this helps.
