Help! Internet/network messed up

Hi
My friend has been trying to get her imac G3 with Mac OS9 (Mac OSZ1-9.8?) connected to new router for DSL. She first tried the Internet Assistant but I think she selected some wrong options as she started getting questions about PPP or ARAP. I then told her to try the TCP/IP network control panel and set it to ethernet and DHCP. I think she did that but she copied some IP numbers from her router manual which she thought she was meant to put in whereas in fact I think IPs should have been assigned automatically. Because that didn't work she went through the internet assistant about 4 times making new connections each time and also trying different settings in TCP/IP (she thought she just had the IP numbers wrong). Then when she tried to delete all the connections she had made and some old dial up connections she can now not access the internet folder at all or the internet assistant getting this error message:
INTERNET CONFIG.EXTENSION ERROR - 50 HAS OCCURRED. UNABLE TO ENTER
She also a little confused about Remote Access- I am not too familar with Macs but I assume this is what she used to use to dial up and that if I get the LAN connection working she won't need that anymore?
I'd really appreciate if anyone could help here as I am not really knowledgable about Macs and it hard to help someone properly when you don't really know a system yourself.
Thanks,
Bill

Thanks for the quick reply Duane! Yes she truly did
throw the spanner in and the rest of the toolkit too!
I think she can still access the TCP/IP control panel
and she has it set to Ethernet and DHCP- she
complained that everytime she tried to changed the
numbers it changed them back, but that is actually
good right as it indicates that DHCP is working!?
That's how I would interpret it. Why does she think that she needs to assign the numbers? That's what DHCP does.
Mac OS 8.6 will not load Internet services until you start up an internet application. After starting an internet applications, the TCP/IP control panel will show the actual numbers.
Verify that the proxy settings haven't been set unless needed.
This is a useful tools for Mac OS classic.
OTTool shows IP and Appletalk configuration parameters within Open Transport. It also allows you to make DNS queries, ping, traceroute, and scan ranges of IP addresses.

  • Switching from internet network to printer network to print

I have a Macbook Pro that I use and also a new Macbook that my grandparents use. We share an HP printer. I was wondering if there was a way to adjust snow leopard so that when i decide to print i don't have to go to the airport menu and change to my printer network and then when i am ready to continue browsing the internet i have to switch back to my internet network which is my dsl box which is wireless to be able to browse the internet. I hope i have explained this clear enough but if not write me back and i will try and explain it better this is my first time on here. Any help would be much appreciated

You need to connect the printer to the dsl modem/router if possible.
This way both of you can use the printer.
There only needs to be one network for all devices.

  • IPhone game playing on internet, network  or AIM

    Hi All,
I have completed my card board game for iphone. Now it has capability of playing usual 4 types(H VsH, C Vs C, C Vs H and H Vs C). Now I would like to provide players to play over internet, network or AIM.
I wondering what kind of technologies are available on iPhone? If you can give me some references It will be grateful. Usually in Java/J2EE world, (Client/Server environment) create a web service interface between client and server, and send/receive events from web service. (Lot more things happens under cover)...
Is this same approach I need to follow here also ....
    Thanks in advance

Okay, people, certainly someone has had a problem with "Syncing Contacts" taking a long long time.  I believe this has to have something to do with iCloud/iTunes/Outlook.  Please help.

If possible can you try the following steps?
Remove battery and SIM card from Z10
Start device, go to the APN screen (Settings > Network Connections > Mobile Network > APN)
Enter the APN provided by your carrier
Back out of this screen to save the change
Remove battery and insert SIM again
Test browsing while connected to the mobile network only

  • I'm connected to my home internet network, but won't appear on the list

I'm in range of my internet network and it works, but it never shows up on the list for me to change things like the DNS settings...

    Try:
    - Resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Powering off and then back on the router
    - Resetting network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

Yes, I think most of us do understand what open source software is. It sounds as if you don't. Here's some information:
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form: the source code and certain other rights normally reserved forcopyright holders are provided under an open-source license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software.
Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-sourcedevelopment and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements.

Yes, Tom Wu of Stanford wrote a paper on something called Secure Remote Access Protocol. It's a form of Asymetric Key Exchange and has nothing to do with hacking anything. It's actually intended to protect data.

  • Create the internet network from MacBook Pro (Aircard) to iPhone and iPad

I would like to create the internet network from MacBook Pro (that used Aircard) to iPhone and iPad. I already turned on the internet sharing, but could not create the internet network. Please let me know how to solve this problem.

Couldn't you attach your iPhone to your computer and upload and add your iPhone Contacts to your iTunes Contacts and then sync the iPhone? Add one unique contact and calendar entry to your computer. You should then get the option to merge.

  • Macbook Internet Network Hacking (Help Please!)

Hi, Thanks for looking...  I am concerned that my apartment neighbor (a computer network engineer) might be trying to hack my Macbook and snoop around with my internet usage, and possibly access my Macbook remotely. Could someone please answer a few questions to ease my concerns please? (The Macbook is connected directly to the broadband modem and there is no wireless internet involved.)
// I suspect he might have gotten physical access to my broadband modem and seen it, is there any information on the modem itself that would give him access to my macbook and internet usage? (The modem says: cable RF MAC Address... and a serial number)
// How easy is it to hack a specific Macbook? Say if my neighbor was indeed a hacker, and wanted to mess with me for whatever reason, would it actually be possible to find out my internet IP address (could he hack the ISP?) to snoop around with how I use the internet? (The Macbook now has the firewall enabled and file sharing, etc. switched off.)
I know very little about this computer networking stuff, so I'm thinking the worst scenario is happening (which is hopefully far-fetched and exaggerated.) If anyone could help me by sharing their knowledge that would be an awesome help! Thanks!

Depending on the router, it may be very easy for him to hack it, whether he has seen it or not. If you believe this may have happened, see How to manage a hacked wireless router.
As for hacking the Mac, that's not a significant concern unless he has had unmonitored physical access to the machine. If he has, the only way to be sure he hasn't installed something to monitor you is to erase the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch.
If he is able to get on the same network as you - which you should make sure to prevent by securing your wireless router - be sure everything in System Preferences -> Sharing is turned off. If you must have a service there turned on, be sure it can only be accessed using a strong password.

  • Need help setting up wireless internet network

I have a 1 GHz iMac G4 (purchased in 2003) that has a dsl connection to the internet via an ethernet cable and the dsl modem that was provided by my internet service (earthlink). My friend recently gave me her imac - same model. I've given it to my son for his room and would like to set up a wireless network so I can get his computer on the internet too.
I've read enough here to figure out that our computers are compatible with the AirPort Extreme card. But what other equipment do I need? How many Airport Extreme cards? an AirPort station?, a router? I'm clueless but very good at following instructions. So if there is an FAQ somewhere that would be helpful too.
    Thanks!

Sarah, Welcome to the discussion area!
You need a wireless router. You can use one of Apple's or a 3rd party wireless router.
You can connect one of the iMacs to the router via Ethernet if you want. Or you can add AirPort Extreme cards to both iMacs.

  • Internet/Networking Help!!!! - Netgear

I have an iMac G3 slot-loading Mac with OS 9 & Panther installed. Preciously I had access to the internet via an external ADSL broadband modem. I have now aquired a Netgear broadband router/modem. I also have a PC which is connected to the router. The PC is connected wirelessly to the router, the Mac is wired via Ethernet. The PC has no problems connecting to the Router & Internet. Initially the Mac was able to gain intermitant access to the internet but now I cannot get it connected at all. In Network preferences it says that it is connected to the internet via Ethernet and seems to obtain the correct IP address etc, but when I go to Safari or Internet explorer it says that the specified server cannot be found. I have spoken to Netgear but alas they had no idea.
Within Network status the only connection visible and configured is the 'Built in Ethernet", nothing else is running or configured.
Am now pulling my hair out.
    Any help gratefully recieved.
    Cheers

Sounds to me like you haven't configured the router for PPPOE access for DSL.
You should not be using the companies software to log into your DSL account now that you have a router. You must go into the router setup, check that you want to log on with PPPOE and put your username and password there... then make sure you uninstall that software or at least disable it, from the other computers.

  • Please Help me control my own computer from different internet network

    Hello everyone,
I have a Powerbook G4 and a Macbook Pro and I have the Powerbook G4 constantly connected to the internet via ethernet cord. I am moving away to college next week and I am taking my Macbook Pro along with me. Both machines have Apple Remote Desktop 3.1 on them, and I was wondering if there was any way I could manange my powerbook (on my home network) from my school network with my Macbook Pro. Thanks!!!

    Thanks a million!
I actually have another question. My uncle has a Powerbook G4 running on 10.3.9 with ARD 3.1 installed. He frequently needs support, and I love showing him how to do things so he can see them on his computer while I am instructing him simultaneously onthe phone. My Powerbook G4 is running on 10.4.9 with ARD 3.1 as well. I've updated the client software on his computer remotely (through ARD), but I cannot control or observe his computer. I can do everything else (get reports, sleep, wake, restart, log off user, update client software, lock/unlock screen, etc). I just cannot observe or control his machine. The appropriate preferences are checked in the Sharing prefpane as well. Is there anything I am missing? What can I do to connect/observe to his machine? Thanks!!!

  • Need help creating network of 1 Airport Extreme & 2 Airport Expresses!

Please somebody help me! I've literally been trying to get our home network to function for months now. I'm seriously about to cry if i can't make it work.
    Here's the situation:
Our apartment is long and narrow and probably has lead paint, so our wifi, powered by a brand new Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n router (named Igor) connected to a comcast modem doesn't reach the whole house. So we got 2 Airport Expresses to place throughout the apartment (named Sven and Svetlana) to help boost the signal.
First i tried to set up Igor to 'Create a wireless network" with the option 'allow this network to be extended' and the connection sharing set to 'Share a public IP' and i set up Sven and Svetlana to 'extend a wireless network' and the connection sharing was set to 'share a public IP'. Everything else was automatic or default pretty much. I got it to work but the connection was really weak and dropped out a lot.
Then i tried setting up a WDS network. no luck there either. so i went to the apple store and they told me i had to hard wire them all together using ethernet cables (roaming network i guess) to compensate for the ****** network acoustics in our place.
So...i ran 1 ethernet cable from Igor down the hall to Svetlana and another from Igor further down the hall to Sven. I set up all 3 to 'create a wireless network' and gave them all the same network name and password. i left the 'allow this network to be extended' option unchecked on all 3 and put them all in bridge mode and automatic settings for the radio mode and channel selection. After about 50 restarts i finally got it to work. Things seemed great for a minute until i realized that my laptop was the only one in the house that could connect to the internet. When i tried to troubleshoot the problem using network diagnostics and restarts, i eventually got my roommate's laptop to work but then mine stopped working.
i've tried changing Igor's connection setting to share a public IP address and leaving Sven and Svetlana's in bridge mode. I've tried changing the 'configure IPv4' setting from 'using DHCP' to 'manual' and entering in identical info for all 3 in the TCP/IP section.
no matter what i do i still have no idea how to make this work for multiple devices in our apartment. I really don't understand that much about networking but i am great at following directions. Please please please please help me! I'm desperate.
thank you in advance for your help!

In a "roaming" network, the router connected to the Internet modem should NOT be in bridge mode. In this case that would be your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). That is because you want it to provide both NAT & DHCP services to both AirPort Express Base Stations and the network clients.

  • Can't connect HP Touchpad to internet/network

I have many issues with my HP TouchPad. I will only mention the MAIN ISSUE, I CANNOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET through my network!  I can connect to my network with my ipad2, my iphone4, my Sony VIO, my DELL Laptop, my HP wireless printer.  But I cannot connect with my HP TouchPad.  Correction, I can get to the network, but not the Internet.  I've talked to HP service 3 or 4 times.  They say it must be my router... It is not my router... I am a CIO so I took this so called tablet to my Network Engineers and all three of them cound not get it to work on 3 differnt networks... yes you got it all three networks work well with any other device... HP support says it must be all 3 routers!!! REALLY, REALLY,  interesting... I've mention MTU's and other things to them, like a new driver.  Not sure if they understand ENGLISH! Anyhow, if anyone would like to buy my HP TouchPad for $300 PLEASE let me know as it was not worth what I paid for it! I would still take a loss of $300, but than I can get back to my other devices that we are testing for our 150+ mobile users! Yes, my iPad2 works GREAT!!!

The TouchPad I have works fine with every Wifi source I've pointed it to - home system, and many HotSpots.
