Help, iPad's "other" space taking so much space!!!!!

I am writing this message because
I got my 16Gb wifi ipad about a month ago and I'm using it with great content.
However, for some reason the space in my iPad is decreasing and decreasing,
because the orange, "Other" space is increasing and increasing.
I remeber earlier on it was at zero but I dont understand why it keeps getting bigger....
Its taking up 4.54 Gbs right now... way more than any of the other categories.... and I cant think of anything that would be in the "other category"
Can anyone help me understand the situation??
Is it normal???
Is there anything I can do to get rid of the huge amount of "other"s?
I'm running out of space a problem which I wouldnt have if that other category didnt take up so much!!!!!!
Thank you for Reading...

I'm having the same problem...
Yesterday my other was a tiny little think slip of yellow that I never really took any notice of because it was so small and insignificant.
I downloaded a couple of movies last night and put them on, making sure that I had enough space to store it all (I only have a 14Gb iPad). I did, with all the Apps that I have on there (I have 5Gb of apps) and the films and everything else, I still had a nice 3 and bit gig left. I always like to leave a few gig free like that.
Anyway, I put the films on, checked the remaining space, and went to bed happily to watch a couple of movies.
Then I woke up this morning and updated a couple of apps, as I do every morning, and started with my day. Then I came to sync the iPad to the PC, and found that now, I only had about 400MB free!
The little yellow bar leapt from practically nothing at all to 2.6GB overnight.
I quickly removed the films to free up a little space but now I can't get rid of the yellow "Other" stuff. I tried to remove the apps that updated to see if it was those, but it wasn't. I tried soft resets, hard resets, emptying caches, getting rid of emails, talking to it nicely, offering it chocolate if it gives up its yellow barred secrets, but nothing...
Sort of taking a hammer to it and physically removing the yellow bar that is plaguing me, I'm all out of ideas!

  • The "other" is taking too much space on my phone?

Its almost six gb. What could that be?

You cannot remove the core apps included with the iOS.  You could try clearing safari's cache:Clear History & Website Data.  Depending on what third party apps you use, they may have a cache clearing function as well.  Go to General->Usage then under storage tap Manage Storage.  There you will see how much space each app is using.  Sometimes deleting & reinstalling an app can clear up valuable storage space.  Cleaning up messages, emails, & photos can also free up space.
    Hope this helps!

  • "Other" Category taking SOOOO much space

    Hi Apple Community.
its been almost 2 years that ive had my imac and im very happy with it. NEVER going back to PC. However im always concerned about my memory, and just today i checked my storage and BANG there was 100GB of memory taken by the "other" category on my flash storage and 269.46GB taken by the "Other" Category on my 2TB SATA Disk. PLEASE help me get rid of these. i understand the SATA disk space because ive got Parrallels disktop using memory on sata disk but i dont understand how 100GB is taken by other category in my flash storage! HELP PLEASE

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free on the startup volume for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root. Back up all data now if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • "other" is taking too much space

I would like to know what it is so I can delete them

Hi, I noticed the "Other data" grows when the synchronization does not complete well.  Wheter it is through Wi-Fi or connected, my iTunes does not seem to block the mac to go in sleep mode.
Mostly happens when synching through Wi-Fi as it is longer.  I solved the issue by launching Cafeine (https://itunes.apple.com/fr/app/caffeine/id411246225?mt=12) or the cafeinate command (http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/03/disable-sleep-mac-caffeinate-command/) when syncing my device (if transferring a lot of data)
It solved my issue on my iPhone and iPad
Note: that to reduce the "Other Data" do a restore of the software (restore Iphone, ipod or ipad... the top right button), then a restore of a backup.  Then let it sync with the cafeinate or cafeine app running.
    cheers!

  • What is the normal amount of GB of Other Space for a new 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3? Also, will iOS 7 slow down/drain the battery of my device?

My Other storage space was at 2.84 GB after i loaded all my music/apps onto a recently purchased 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3.  Resetting the settings and removing the music and apps did not help reduce the Other space.  I restored to a backup and got my Other storage space down to almost 400 MB.  When I started syncing music it grew 500-ish MB.  Each time I sync, the Other grows a bit more.  This is really irritating.
The official listed available GB on my 32 GB is 28.22 GB (not including Other), so now I am irritated knowing that this Other is taking up my space when I didn't even have 32 GB of free space to begin with. So 28.22 - 2.84GB = 25.38 GB.
I want to restore to a new device to see if that helps, but do not want to upgrade to i0S7.  Is there any way to do this?
If I upgrade to i0S 7 I am worried it might slow my ipod or drain the battery faster.  Will it do that?  The ipod is expensive and I dont want it to go downhill and obsolete on me because it can't handle a better operating system.

Less than 1 1/5 GB is normal. It does grow with time.

  • My 4 gb ipod Nano is full yet there are only 20 songs on it. In summary, it just says "other" is taking up the space. Was fine one day and the next I got this. Help?

Have had problems since downloading iTunes 10. First it moved all my iTunes music files to another location. Next, I lost all my songs on my iPod. I went to replace the music to the iPod that I'd lost, but it only allows me to add about 20 songs (on a 4gb Nano) then says disk is full. In the Summary on the iPod, "other" is taking up all the remaining space. I have no videos, pictures, or anything else on the iPod. How do I free up that "used" space? Please help? And Thanks!

  • Please Help! Why do I have so much OTHER space on my Ipod Mini

    Hi
For some reason I have over 1gb of OTHER taking up space on my Mini- What is it and how do I get rid of it? My Friend has the same model and doesn't have it
    Thanks Alot
    Vicki

    Hi Vicki,
Try resotirng your iPod to factory settings. Typically, that fixes this kind of issue, since restoring deletes all of the contents off your iPod.
For instructions on how to restore an iPod, check out this Knowledge Base article:

Does that fix the issue, or do you still have too much "Other" space on your iPod?

  • Cannot sync, not enough free space. 'other'is taking up too much space.

cannot sync, not enough free space. 'other'is taking up too much space.  i have no 'other' things on my phone and have never had this problem before. I believe this may have come from upgrading to ios5.

Connect to iTunes, then click the Restore button. When asked, choose to set up as a new phone. After it finishes, right click on the name of the iPhone in the list on the left side of the iTunes window and choose Restore from Backup. Do this BEFORE you sync and after restoring.

  • Why does "other" take up so much space on my iPhone?

I got an iPhone 5s 16 GB at the end of June 2014.  I keep running out of memory and when I recently plugged my phone into iTunes, I noticed that "other" is taking up around 3 GB of space. I know the usual delete pictures and browsing history spiel, and I've done it all. People also say that Settings>General>Usage>Manage Storage is a good way to tell what is taking up space, but I went there and manually added all of the numbers and they only add up to 8.6 GB vs the 11.6 that my phone says is occupied, leaving an extra 3 GB unaccounted for and confirming my suspicions that "other" is not included in this. People keep telling me it's the operating system but isn't that already taken out of the original 16 GB and why you really only have 12 GB of storage to begin with? As I was looking through different forums and discussions, people kept saying to restore the iPhone from the iTunes backup and I am wondering if that would actually work...does anyone have experience with this? (Also would this delete my apps and music as well? I'm not very familiar with the restore from backup and could not really find any good information on it.) Do I just have to live with "other" eating up this much space on my phone? I've had iPods and I have an iPad, and I've never had this problem. Any help at all would be very appreciated, as this is very frustrating. Thanks.

That is normal size for others.. mine is around 2 GB.
What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It?

  • Is there any way to easily delete "other" space on my iPad?

I keep having problems with "other" space on my iPad. My 64GB iPad is always running close to capacity, and often when I try to sync too much data, the sync fails and I end up left with some corrupt files that become the infamous "other" space you can see in iTunes.
Recently, I tried to clear up space on my iPad, and deleted all photos (including 2.7GB of photo stream).
I had about 5Gb of "other" space, so I figured it was time for a painful restore process that takes about 3-4 hours on my iPad.
Before doing the "restore", I did one last sync.
After the restore was done, the "other" space was gone, but at the same time I found that some of the clean ups I had done were lost. Photostream was still enabled and was still using up 2.7GB of space.
I disabled Photostream, and to my annoyance, the 2.7GB of space taken up by the photos disappeared, but it simply moved from the "Photos" category over to the "Other" category. Sigh!
I don't want to do another restore again, but I would really like to reclaim that 2.7GB of space.
Is there any way besides dong another restore? Rebooting didn't help.

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) but the messages are still there.

I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) with iTunes but the messages are still there. How can I get rid of these texts for good and have more space on my phone? 6.33 gb of other space is way too much, thats almost half of my overall available space (13.5 gb.) I don't want to reset my phone and lose all my other texts/ app progress/ photos. I do have backups, but when I restore from the backup the other space comes back along with everything else. What can I do to get rid of this other space and the 'deleted' text messages? (I'm running iOS 6.1.3 if that helps)

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.

  • IOS 7.0.2 install on iPad 2 has frozen.  My "other" space has been slowly rising from 1gb to 7.8gb

Hello.  I'm a seasoned apple and ipad user, however my iOS 7.0.2 installation has left my iPad 2 frozen with the apple logo and bar on screen. I've tried all the given instructions, none of which have resolved the issue. However I've noticed that on the iPad Summary screen on iTunes my "other" space
has been slowly rising from 1gb and it is now up to 7.8gb after 12 hours.  By clicking on the the device tab, it causes the "other" to increase.  Is it very, very slowly installing?  My iPad did have about 12gb of the 13.64gb storage used, hence perhaps why it is taking so long?
