HELP! iPhoto 08 Quality loss after edits

HELP! iPhoto 08 Quality loss after edit!
Any edited version, no matter how minor, causes the file size to be cut in half!
Original 3872 x 2592 is 3.1mb at 300dpi .
Edit version 3870x2590 becomes 1.5Mb at 72dpi.
B&W conversion 3872x2592 becomes 1.6mb at 72dpi.
Seems like a major degradation! iPhoto 6 wasn't this bad.
DPI change is not a problem but the file size change sure is!
PLEASE! any ideas before I upgrade all my files to 08. Please - don't say Aperture, it's still too slow and cumbersome. Trying to avoid Lightroom and stay within Apple sphere.

It really isn't a big degradation. There is a jpg compression when you make any edit but you might be hard pressed to see the reduction unless you're enlarging/printing the file to very large sizes. The most critical part of an image file is the number of pixels in it.
The reduction in size depends on the image content of the photos. If there's a lot of the same color, i.e. like lots of blue sky or a same color wall, that type of image will see much more compression than a very intricate photo. Also when removing the color information for a B/W conversion reduces the file size considerably. Do a Google search for jpeg compression and you'll find some very informative descriptions on how the compression is performed and what part image detail plays in the resulting file size.
You would have to compress the file a number of additional times time before you'd see the change. And with iPhoto's Revert to Original capability, you can start a new edit fresh with the untouched digital negative.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Major Quality loss when editing in Iphoto 09

    Hi,
I am a new user to Imac and Iphoto and I saw that when I edit an Image in Iphoto, I loose a lot of my original data.
I have found that I can return to the original picture, but I wish to edit (especially using the CROP function) then print the Image on 20x30 cm size and therefore I need all the quality I can get.
When I Crop either JPEG or .RAW formatted images (for example 10 MBytes in size) even if I select the COMPLETE image, I am left with only 4 or 5 Mbytes of data.
It gets much worse when I really Crop a part of the picture.
A 12 Mega pixel photo should supply sufficient data to cover a complete wall, but for some reason a lot of quality is lost when I use any of the editing features.
Am I doing something wrong ?
Should I change any of the settings ?
    Thanks for your advice

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
the only difference is that Iphoto took my quality !!
Are you basing the "quality" loss on visual appearance of the photo or on the resulting size of the jpeg file? If it's the latter that is really not an accurate method. True, some information is lost with a jpeg edit and save (only the first edit in iPhoto results in additional jpeg compression) but, in my experience, you would have to print a VERY large print before seeing any noticeable image degradation. I've compressed jpegs as high as 60%, i.e. a quality setting of 40, and for most all uses up to 5x7 prints haven't seen noticeable image degradation. However, I realize image quality is subjective and open to individual interpretation.
So unless you are visibly seeing image degradation I wouldn't worry about the file size reduction, especially in iPhoto as it's compressed only once no matter how many edits are made and saved. Apple uses a compression algorithm that gives the best image quality for the amount of compression it uses.
The following is from the Usernet FAQ site article "JPEG image compression FAQ, part 1/2':
Subject: [4] How well does JPEG compress images?
Very well indeed, when working with its intended type of image (photographs and suchlike). For full-color images, the uncompressed data is normally 24 bits/pixel. The best known lossless compression methods can compress such data about 2:1 on average. JPEG can typically achieve 10:1 to 20:1 compression without visible loss, bringing the effective storage requirement down to 1 to 2 bits/pixel. 30:1 to 50:1 compression is possible with small to moderate defects, while for very-low-quality purposes such as previews or archive indexes, 100:1 compression is quite feasible. An image compressed 100:1 with JPEG takes up the same space as a full-color one-tenth-scale thumbnail image, yet it retains much more detail than such a thumbnail.

  • Quality loss after exporting 1280 x 960 30fps footage

    Hello everyone,
Everytime I edit and export footage shot with my GoPro camera (1280x960p, 30fps) the quality gets a little less. Very frustrating as I am clueless after a long time of looking for what I'm doing wrong..
I use Premiere Pro Version 4.2.1
    Sequence presets:
    General
    Editing mode: Desktop
    Timebase: 29,97fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 1280h 960v (1,0000)
    Frame rate: 29,97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
    Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)
    Export settings:
    Format: H.264
    Preset: Custom
    TV Standard: NTSC
    Frame Width: 1280
    Frame Height: 960
    Frame Rate (fps) 29.97
    Field Order: None (Progressive)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels.
Has anybody got an idea what could help here?

Thanks for the replies guys, but unfortunately the problem isn't really solved yet..
I tried checking the maximum render quality, but that only resulted in my laptop not being able to smoothly play the exported video.
Filming with the 1280 x 720 setting is possible, but then the footage just doesn't look that sharp.. (as I can't film in 60fps, I got the first GoPro 960).
I installed Cineform and converted a little test video to AVI. This resulted in an export video without quality loss, but the conversion with Cineform took way too long for it to be a practical solution cause I edit a lot.
At last, Abhishek Kapoor, I couldn't find the video setting you're talking about to increase the maximum bitrate.
Any other ideas that might work?

  • IPhoto RAW Images Compress after Editing!!

Has anyone noticed that after editing a RAW picture in iPhoto that it compresses to less than half it's size?
If I have a file that that is 11.2mb, after the edit it drops to 1.9mb.
Is this a setting I am missing?
Message was edited by: Richard Hagan

Yes, it will show a smaller size. But if you drag that thumbnail to the desktop you'll find you have a jpg file which is the results of your editing the raw file in iPhoto. What iPhoto is reporting is the file size of the jpg that will created if you need to produce an file of that edited RAW file. Until you drag it to the desktop the edit (or rather edit instructions) are kept in iPhoto's database files and iPhoto uses that information to display the edited version in iPhoto.

  • IPhoto image loss after editing in Library

Apologies for posting question here. There was no post message button in the iPhoto discussion page. I've edited about 2 dozen images in the iPhoto Photolibrary itself. Now I know not to do that, but in the meantime I'm trying to recover lost images apparently damaged in the editing. I may have reached a memory threshold, but there was no warning. The editor indicated after each change and shift to another image that the previous changes were being saved. Not so. The thumbs for these images in the browse bar first indicated the changes I had made, but then changed back to their original orientations after a second or so. The images themselves couldn't be opened to edit. Couldn't revert to originals either. Indeed, the originals seem to have been lost in the process. Backed up the files to DVD disk and rebuilt the library (iPhoto 5.03 or .04, I think) by reopening with Command+Option held down. Now the problem thumbs have also disappeared. Is there any way to recover these images? Thanks.

  • HELP! Image quality loss

This might sound like a stupid problem, but anytime I go to copy and paste and image from one program to another (say iPhoto to Photoshop or Graphic Converter or Keynote) the image gets noticeably brighter and loses quality. Not a lot, but enough to make a definite difference (and enough for me to notice, since I'm an art historian who relies on the quality of my images for work). Using a Macbook Pro 2009, with 10.6.2 software. I've bashed my head against a number of places, but I haven't been able to figure out why. Any help?
Here's two sample screen shot images, one from Photoshop and one from Graphic Converter.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/9937906@N06/4306597667/
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/9937906@N06/4307339742/

Well for a start, there is no copy and paste between iphoto and any other application. I have no idea what you're pulling out of iPhoto on a copy and paste.
For working with an external editor - Photoshop or Graphic Converter:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
To use a photo in Keynote you access the Library via the Media Browser or any of these:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Video quality awful after editing with iMovie

    Hope someone can help.
When i edit gopro camera footage in iMovie the quality is awful after exporting finalized clips/footage.
If i play the clip imported directly from the camera it appears in crystal clear HD. As soon as i do anything with it it degrades to the point where it almost looks like a 'negative 'shot.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    1. Ask on the iMovie forum, that's the best place for iMovie help.
    2. When you get there, ask about export settings. Sounds like that's where the issue is.

  • Iphoto 6 not saving after edit

    Hello
I'm struggling to figure out iphoto at the moment. I've never had a problem with it until recently. Basically iphoto was unable to import my RAW files from my Nikon D55 the other day but has been fine on many occasions before that. I don;t know what's changed. In my iphoto folder there are two folders one containing originals the other modified. It won't open any files from the original folder into iphoto - preview will open them and Nikon picture project will open them.
I managed to get iphoto to import them today but now when I edit they just won't save, the program just sits there with the saving bar going forever.
This is really frustrating me, does anyone have any ideas to help me?
    Hopefully waiting

I thought I was being thick and not completely understanding of how to do this "easy" trick.
I've tried at least 15 times to clear the red from my eyes and as we're told it saves automatically..for convenience.Except that it doesn't.
If I close the pic and then reopen the eyes are unchanged.
Is there something I should be doing?
My email is on OS9.2 so when I switch discs and begin to work it always tries to connect with internet if I ask for help.Shouldn't there be more comprehensive help available on desktop?

  • Last-minute help! Video quality drops after burn

I'm exporting a video out of FCP using Compressor, saving directly to the DVD format for burning inside DVD Studio Pro. When I preview the video inside DSP, it looks amazing. After I finish burning the disc and view it in DVD Player, the video quality looks horrible.
    See a screenshot here:
    http://www.door62.com/temp/DVD-quality.jpg
The one on the left is DVD Player, the one on the right is the preview inside DSP.
Any advice? This is actually ridiculously last-minute... Any help would be hugely appreciated

I have been having simliar trouble, esp. with textured backgrounds in the video.
Specifically, someone sitting in a board room delivering a short message (2 minutes) on camera. The background is a textured wood panel with a continuously changing color gradient.
I encode in Compressor, NTSC lower field, 2-pass VBR, 6.1 Mbps avg., 7.2 Mbps max., AIF audio. I have also tried a number of bit rate variations including CBR and AC3 audio.
I drop the clip in a DVDSP track and it looks fine in simulator. Also open the m2v in QT Pro, it looks fine.
After building, I check the TS_Folder in Apple DVD Player, and the background pulses, shifting from light to dark and is filled with artifacts. It looks even worse on a set-top player.
I have had problems like this a number of times, and end up having to use other programs on Windows to get around it. Kind of a pain.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?

  • Major quality loss after disc build/compile

All of my mpeg videos were hardware encoded on a Sonic SD-2000... looks great when i play it in quicktime and in the playback window of DVDSP, but after I build the disc and load it in Apple DVD player, there is a dramatic loss in quality. A lot of compression is visible with a strange pulsing to it. I know the compile shouldn't cause this to happen... but it is!
has anyone had any experience with this?

I'm playing it actual size. On a set top player/ntsc tv it looks great... but on my computer the image seems to be brighter & there is a lot of visible compression. I'd like to think it's just my computer, but when I software encode this doesn't happen. I've opened the hardware encoded mpegs in VLC, Mplayer & Quicktime & they look great. They also look good in the DVDSP simulator.
I've tried deleting my disc build files & parsing files & rebuilding with no luck.

  • HELP! Bad quality output after burn..

Ok, I have a movie i made. When I export from final cut pro the quality is great but once I go through DVD studio pro and burn the quality is BAD. Someone told me that I need to change the options on the encoder of DVD studio pro, if so what do I need to set it to...???

    Javi,
If it is a matter of bit rate changes (I'm unsure as I am new to DVD SP)
maybe the following will help, in regards to duration and best bit rates.

  • Nikon Coolpix vs. iPhoto: Photos Black Out After Editing

Photos imported from Nikon Coolpix retain image but show 0 MB once they are edited in iPhoto. This happens more often than not, and there appears to be no consistency as to why and when it happens. This does not happen with other cameras I use, and appears to be independent of the memory card used.
I'm less concerned as to *why* it happens and more concerned to find a solution to the problem.

Original Images are all in color. When Working in the editor, they appear to be ok. Then, when I escape back to the event, the image appears but the size immediately goes from the original to zero. When I go back to the editor, the image becomes all black and only reappears intact when I choose "revert to original". Bottom line appears to be that I will have to upgrade my system. Oh well.

  • Quality loss after exporting finished sequences.......

    Hello,
I notice when I am working with the footage, it looks like great quality in the viewer, however when I export it out of the final cut express, I notice it does not look as clear as before. I am using final cut express. When I drop the raw footage into the time line, I notice that the blurb "match with clip settings" i always say yes.
Please let me know any and all input. Thanks!

  • Ratings loss after editing in Photoshop

I have my LR3 RAW images rated a "1" star.  When I select one to edit in PHotoshop and save it, it shows back up in LR3 with no rating. This is costing me a lot of time to change my ratings to find the image and then put the rating back on.  This never used to happen in LR2. What can I do to change it? I have the box checked for automatic in the catalog settings but it still does not work.
Any fixes to this? Getting frustrated with LR3 already.

Nope, that doesn't work either. But thank you!
