HELP iPhoto database stuck

iPhoto & Aperture database stuck on 'processing' for days. Measage preparing thumbnails. Tried to cancel but just keeps processing and I can't use either app.
Any ideas? Thanks

aperture is says 507 left to process and it seems to be going down by 5 a day at most.
That looks like you have imported media that simply cannot beprocessed and iPhoto and Aperture are stuck trying to process these items.
Quit Aperture. See my User Tip
If Aperture is unresponsive, how to avoid force quitting?
Ten try to open Aperture again, but this time with the Shift ⇧ key held down. This will launch Aperture, but defer the generation of preview images.
Can you get Aperture to launch without hanging and processing?
Then have a look my User Tip:

and try to identify the image or video that is causing this hanging.

Help: iPhoto window stuck under dock

Hello,
My iPhoto window seems to be stuck somewhere under the dock where I can't access it. iPhoto apparently opens and runs fine, when I swipe four fingers down to see the applications I can see the iPhoto window open as well, but when I click to access it, it just goes to the bottom right side, under the dock where I can't reach it.
I've tried to reset preferences by going to Library > Preferences but the com.apple.iphoto.plist is not listed on there.
Is there a way I can save my photos??

Do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
This should reset the window position to its default position.

Iphoto stuck "upgrading iphoto database"

I upgraded to the new version of iphoto with Yosemite but can not get it to launch properly. It sits with the message "upgrading iphoto database" for seemingly ever. I've left it going overnight and still nothing. I've forced quit, restarted, erased and redownloaded iphoto, all with the same results. Any help or how to fix would be appreciated.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

IPhoto '08 stuck in July, recent events missing

iPhoto 7.1.4 is behaving oddly. The last 12 Months folder is stuck on 08/07/2008 and all the imports since then are missing. The original images are there in the originals folder. I've tried rebuilding the library and using iPhoto Library Manager but still have the same problem with the new library.
I've got over 4000 photos taking up 25G of disk space. Is this the problem?
I have TimeCapsule - could this be to blame some how?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open Photo window
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. Old Toad's automator workflow to backup Library6.iPhoto database

Dear Old Toad,
I just today downloaded your workflow to backup the iPhoto database file, and am having problems making it work.
When I run it, either from the dock or the script menu, it launches Automator but then closes without doing anything. I don't get a confirmation screen, and no copy of the database is created.
So I opened it in Automator to see if editing it would help, even though my library is already named iPhoto Library and stored in user/pictures. When I dragged it onto the Automator window, there was only 1 action (Get Specified Finder Items) instead of the 4 that show up in the ReadMe. When I dragged it onto the Automator app to open it, I got nothing.
I downloaded it via Firefox 3.0.1 and got a 1.1MB zip, and I tried downloading it twice in case it had corrupted in the download, but no change with the second try. Downloaded from here:

Yes. Run the application like you would use the Save command in other applications, often. Running it again will overwrite the current backup copy with a new backup that will include all changes you've made to your library, new pictures, deletions, slideshows, books, etc.
I suggested keeping it in the dock so you can quickly run it after any changes you've made to the library. Being in the Dock makes it more convenient than having to go into the Application folder and launching it from there.

Corrupted iPhoto database (thanks a lot mobileme!)

Following a stalled mobileme upload where iphoto locked up and couldn't even be force quited, I have a corrupted iPhoto )* database and can't see the last two years of photo's.
There files are thankfully still all there in the appropriate "originals", "modified" and "data" files but iphoto can't SEE them to open them.
I tried rebuilding the library but still no go. Dragging the files into my back up iphoto library (which covers up until last month) preserves all the metadata, which is a relief.
HOWEVER, I have just returned to the UK with about 2000 shots from a US trip, and I will potentially lose the hours I have spent editing these shots. I could merge the original and modified files before re-importing but that is going to be very laborious....
So my question is, is there an easy way to repair the library database without having to re-import??
Any help/suggestions greatly received!
p.s. mobileme iPhoto syncing has DESTROYED the previous stability and usability of the web gallery feature..... This is the buggiest bit of software tech I have seen as a 20 year plus mac user!

Trouble importing iphoto database

Am moving to Aperture and want to move my iphoto database over problem is it gets through some of it then somewhere in the middle it gets stuck on importing an event # which changes each time i try this and it will sit there for hours and hours and then it says app not responding.
I have tried and tried and im getting frustrated as this should be an easy move.

If that doesn't work, you could try breaking the iphoto lib into, eg, three, and importing each separately and then reconstituting it once inside Aperture. Dupe the iphoto 2 more times, open each and delete a different 2/3 of it in each. Import those then in Aperture, and you might bypass whatever it is that is horking you ( at least twice, hopefully ). A PITA but it might unblock you.

Help. iphoto has taken over my computer's HD over 50gig. why?

okay, i have iphoto 8. 20,776 pictures and over 50gig of hard drive. it seems that every time i make a small import, multiple gigs are consumed. i just found out about the "copy photos to iphoto library" tab and unclicked it. however, i fear that iphoto is eating up more than double what it should be due to multiple copies of pictures stowed away who knows where. basically, when i open iphoto and scroll through all the pictures, they look as i want them to be. i don't need copies because i back everything up with time machine anyway. what can i do to just have one of each picture saved to my computer and viewed through iphoto? iphoto diet cant work because i read that it isn't approved for iphoto 8 and could cause problems. is there anything i can do to just keep all the pictures i see inside of my iphoto app and nothing else? i really appreciate any help, this is so frustrating!

It sounds like what you need instead of iPhoto is an image browser like Picassa, JetPhoto Studio, FR-PhotoStudio, QPick or Photonator. They can all be found at VersionTracker.com.

Iphoto is stuck in "waiting" in app store

Please help,
I just updated to 10.10 and I am trying to download the new iphoto, since apple insists that I update. Iphoto is stuck in the waiting to be installed part of the downloading process. the App store already says that I've purchased the app. I have tried signing out of the app store and back in again, I have checked for unfinished downloads, but all I get is "waiting" and "pause"
I can't access any of iphoto photos...

If LarryHN's advice still does not solve the problem, restart you Mac in Safe Mode, see this link: Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode. http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1564 . That might clear the App Store caches. Then try to download again.

Sharing One iPhoto Database Between Two Accounts

Below is a reply to a question I have regarding sharing photos with my wife on the same Mac. I would like for us both to able to upload, edit, and use photos from the same iPhoto database. Do all of the buggaboos listed in the reply below still apply?

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
