Help! iPhoto Library appears to be unusable.

I have a large library so my iPhoto is loaded onto an external Lacie drive. Was viewing pics when my 3 month old Macbook Pro's battery went dead. When I plugged in and rebooted, I received a message telling me to upgrade my iPhoto. I did, and now when it opens the library on the Lacie it shows that no pictures are available - even though the size (800gb +) is still there. I selected "open package content" on the library to see if the pics are actually there and after some searching I found a file called "Old Masters" and yes they are all there. What the heck happened and how do I get iPhoto back on track? Yosemite 10.10.1 iPhoto 9.6

But the idea of organizing 15 year's worth of photos (again) is NOT pleasant.
No, it really isn't.  This bug has wracked several iPhoto Libraries by now.
Send feedback to Apple about this bug. It may help them to come up with a bug-fix sooner, and it might save a few iPhoto libraries.

• IPhoto Library appears to have no content?

when trying to print a photo on my Canon PIXMA MP620, using Easy Photo-Print EX, the select images window appears.
In it, there is a file listing, beginning with my HD, then below and indented is (among others) my Users folder, and inside that my Pictures folder.
However, it doesn't appear any pix are inside that folder even though I've imported many into iPhoto, and can see them in iPhoto.
When accessing via a Finder window, the same thing happens - clicking through to Users, my folder, and then Pictures... only iPhoto Library appears. But again with no content inside. IF I right-click on that iPhoto Libray and select Show Package Contents, a new window opens titled iPhoto Library. In it, there's the list of multiple folders, including "modified" and "originals"
Should I not be able to simply access these files by (traditional) click on the iPhoto Library?
Can I adjust a setting so that my one-click printing will work?

in the select images window look in the lower left under Media ==> photos ==> iPhoto
click here for a discussion on how to access your photos correctly.

• IPhoto library appears corrupted - help

Within the last week I have upgraded to OS 10.6.3 and iPhoto 8.1.2
When I click on the iPhoto icon in the dock, all of the event icons are intact, but when I click on an individual photo in any event I see a dark screen with an exclamation mark. The only event that is OK is the one created with my most recent batch of imports.
I have tried restoring using TM, but it quits after about 10% of the library is restored. I was hoping to restore all my calendars and albums and so went back to a time when I was using iPhoto 8.0.3 (I think). Is that why I can't restore everything?
I have tried holding down the option + command key to launch iPhoto and rebuilding from there. No success.
I have tried using iPhoto Library Manager, again with no success.
I do have all but one iPhoto event stored on the external drive. Can I delete the library on the HD and transfer everything back from the external drive?
Is there anything I should try before I do that?

I would drag the iPhoto library to the desktop and drag the backup version to the pictures folder and launch iPhoto - you probably will be ok but you will have all versions available just in case

• Please help iPhoto library problems - faces, facebook etc.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but iPhoto 09 has never worked very well for me. When I first started to use iPhoto 09 I went through my library to tag everyone so they came up in the faces thing. I had to add lots of missing faces because it didn't detect many. Then it merged lots of the faces together under one face name and also lost most of the ones I had tagged. I was really annoyed because this took me ages and I read on the forum that others were having problems so I decided to leave it for a while. I also had a huge problem uploading to facebook. When I made an album to upload it would start but then my internet would go off and then iPhoto just crashed. Whenever I touch any of the facebook albums iPhoto just crashes. After a couple of updates I started to think these features might be working better so I decided to sort out my library. I started to sort out the faces thing where they different people had been merged. I went through and added lots of missing faces. When I went back to check these photos the names I had added disappeared from the photo. I tried about 10 times and each time they disappeared on the same photos. Facebook was still crashing so I deleted all of my facebook albums which took ages because it kept crashing. Now it has duplicated an event and put it under a blank name and a different date. When i try to delete the photos they stay there and when I try to merge the folders that are the same, another event gets put in the folder of the same date, creating different duplicates. I don't understand what i'm doing wrong and I'm so scared of losing photos and all of the things like dates and order etc. Can anyone tell me why i'm having all of these problems? I think i need to rebuild my libary but I don't know how and i'm scared of losing photos or dates, or names or places or faces. Sorry such a long post, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's likely that your Library database has been damaged in all the crashing.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

• How to make my iPhoto Library appear in Finder under Favorites

I have recently istalled the 10.8 on my iMac. The hard drive has been formated new. At that occasion the old iPhoto Library has been copied (and updated later on). It´s location is in Pictures folder. My question is : can I have it separately as an icon - the way it was before - in Favorites.
This is how it looks now when I open the Finder.

The iPhoto appears as "a document" and not as an icon.. there is no way I can attach a photo from the Library to an email.. or anywhere else.
How to make this work right?
Many thanks.

Well you click the attach file button and then follow my detailed instructions
When sending from a browser based mail use the media browser (in the attach window in the lower left hand corner under media ==> photos ==> iPhoto)
For all supported access methods see the user tip on accessing your iPhoto files -https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto?view=documents

• Help - iPhoto Library mangled

Hi, Any help would be greatly appreciated as I cannot find any answers in other posts.
The situation: I ran out of space on my Macbook Air, so I copied my iPhoto library (65GB) onto an external drive. Then bought a new iMac and, using iPhoto 11, selected the library from the external drive and imported it into iPhoto. It imported overnight, but 1) ALL events were renamed/recreated -- 2) ALL albums and slideshows are gone --- 3) there are crazy amounts of duplicate photos and events with new event names --- 4) there are new photos in the events from cropped faces of people in other pictures.
How can this be fixed?
Should I re-import the library and use some other method of importing?
This is really important because I have many slideshows and albums of family events, deceased relatives, etc.

and, using iPhoto 11, selected the library from the external drive and imported it into iPhoto
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
To move the Library to the new machine simply copy it to the Pictures Folder and open it. That's it.

• Iphoto library appears to be missing

I moved my iphoto library to an external drive, and deleted it on my mac to free up space. It's worked great like this for a month or so.
Today the usb plug for the external drive got knocked out of the computer, and now I can't get any of the pics to open in iphoto.
WHen i click on the library icon info on the external drive, it says that it has 23 gb, so I know the pics must be there, but I can't get them to open in iphoto.
I've tried opening iphoto while holding down the option key and clicking to this library and i've tried clicking on the library to open it that way. No matter what I do, the program shows tehre are no pics tehre.
Any ideas how to fix this?

ok . . . too weird - I opened an older back up, quit, and reopened wtih this library and it opened just fine. I have no idea what I did.

• IPhoto library appears empty after update.

A while ago I updated iPhoto to v9 and have been happily using my main personal iPhoto library since.
Recently, I needed to check one of my older, business, libraries and iPhoto is behaving as though it's a newly created library with no photos. Further checking of my eight further libraries showed seven of them in the same state, the other went through the expected 'upgrade' procedure and is intact.
So,
1. Why didn't the others update automatically?
2. How do I force them to update?
3. Short of going into the package contents and extracting the photos what else can I do to recover the situation?

If there are edited photos in the backed up library and you restore it you should be able to view those  edits once you convert the library to the latest version of iPhoto.
There is no way to identify which are edited versions from the Finder.
Since iPhoto 7 will still run on Mavericks I would try this on one of your iPhoto 7 libraries or as restore iPhoto 7 library:
1 - restore iPhoto 7 from your Time Machine backup.
2 - launch it with the Option key held down and select the V7 library to open.
3 - close iPhoto 7 and relaunch with the Option+Command keys held down to open the First Aid window.
4 - select all options and rebuild.
5 - after the rebuild launch the iPhoto Library Upgrader
select the rebuild V7 library and upgrade it.
6 - launch iPhoto 9.5.1 and open the library.  Check to see if it's working as it should.

• HT5043 My daughter was taking pictures in photo booth and now all of our photos from the iphoto library appear to be missing.  Any ideas how to recover them?

Does anyone know how to recover or view pictures after importing photos from photo booth?  My daughter said that she was asked if she wanted to start a "new card".  Is this term familiar to anyone.  So sad to lose all our photos....

Sorry - what exactly was done? iPhoto and PhotoBooth have no relation to each other -
If she deleted the iPhoto libreary in error then take it out of the trash and put it back in the pictures folder - if the trash has been emptied then restore your backup of the iPhoto lbiarary - that is what backups are for - to protect against mistakes and failures

• Your photo library was not found. Do you want to find your iPhoto Library?

Your photo library was not found. Do you want to find your iPhoto Library?
Do you want to create or find?
This is the message I get when I try to open iphoto.
1. this is the first time since I've used iphoto that this has happened.
2. I would like to know why.
3. I am not sure which choice to make.
4. recent changes involving photos would be deleting several photos....I used a program called Grand Perspective and began to delete photos from there
5. although I'm interested in fixing this problem, I would like to learn more about 'libraries' and the way iphoto works. Previous to owning a Mac, I used Picasa with my pc and I don't remember it using as much space on my hard drive. iphoto has a large number of duplicated photos of which I've been unable to resolve easily and it is approx. 60 G of space. I would like to have access to my images (30,000) through external hard drives but not necessarily have them all on my mac. I believe that is what Picasa does. I'm using the new Picasa for Mac but want to continue to use iphoto as well.
If I did not form this question well enough, please let me know how to clarify. I'm trying to remedy this while answering a million Why? why? Why? questions from my 4 year old!
Thank you.
iphoto 7.1.5

I would like to learn more about 'libraries'
Step one is to learn about iPhoto - it is not a photo viewer like Picasa - it is a photo manager and uses an SQL database - the content and structure of this database are critical (as with any database application) to the operation of iPhoto - any changes made to either the content or structure of the database using external programs including (especially) the finder can corrupt the database and cause you to lose data
recent changes involving photos would be deleting several photos....I used a program called Grand Perspective and began to delete photos from there
This is how you destroyed your iPhoto library and made it unusable
As to space - the iPhoto database contains at a minimum a copy of the original photo (in the default and recommended operating environment) and a small thumbnail. When any modification to the photo is made a modified version is created so there might be three versions (no duplicates) of a photo within the iPhoto library - none of them are extraneous and none of them can be removed without corrupting the iPhoto library
Once a photo is imported into iPhoto (assuming default settings which are strongly recommended) the original source photo outside of iPhoto can be archived, deleted or otherwise handles - iPhoto has no further need for it.
The iPhoto library can be located on an external hard drive so long as that hard drive is always available when iPhoto is running
In general it is not advised to run two different photo organizers against the same photos - so if you use both Picasa and iPhoto you are likely to create future problems (although Google claims it is possible - just remember that you can not successfully make any change of any sort to any photo with the iPhoto library using Picasa or any other program - if you only use Picasa to look at photos you may be ok - if you never make any mistakes
As to your immediate problem - you have destroyed you iPhoto library by deleting files from it. If you want to use iPhoto you will have to start over - find the originals folder within the iPhoto library and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and create a new library - import the photos from the originals folder into iPhoto and do not go inside the iPhoto library or modify the contents of the iPhoto library in the future.

• Can't open iPhoto library after hard drive crash

My daughter's MacBook hard drive crashed rather catastrophically. I managed to clone the damaged drive to an external drive before it died completely. On the clone, her iPhoto library appears intact, but when I double click on it, and click the options to update the photos and thumbnails for the current version of iPhoto (I think she was using '08, and I'm on '09) I'm left with an empty iPhoto. When I open the package contents of the iPhoto Library, I can see the original files, but can't get them to open, even in Photoshop.
Any ideas out there? I have an older version of her Library on backup, but it's the more recent photos she's desperate to get back.

The 'Originals' are all around 3 - 3.6 megs each.
Well that sounds like at least there is data there. Try download a trial of Graphic Coverter . I've seen that open some hopeless cases.

• My iPhoto library is corrupt. How can I fix it?

The library disappeared from iPhoto so I restored it and now its fragmented my events, they are out of date sequence, some photos appear as individuals outside of events for no reason, there are triplicates and they are all named with strange numbers and letters. I bought "Duplicate Photos Fixer Pro" but when I went to scan the library it said it couldn't locate any photos, yet I can see them when I open iPhotos. I have repaired and rebuilt the library but it did not fix the issues as mentioned about. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi Larry. When I opened iPhoto my whole library had disappeared apart from one event with about 60 photos I had added last Sunday. I went into Spotlight and searched for the Pictures folder found the iPhoto library right clicked on it and there was an option, I think it said something like "reimport" into iPhoto. I did that and then the iPhoto library appeared but with all of the issues as mentioned above. It is certainly not an old iPhoto library as there is only one on my system that I have used without any problems for 12 months. Is there a way I can delete this scrambled library in iPhotos and restore it?

• Im having a problem with my iphoto library.  all of photos are outlines in gray with black background.

My iphoto library appears as white dotted outlines and black background.  I can only see the photos if i am scrolling?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

• Want to backup my iphoto library to ext. drive, but it does not appear in the picture folder. When I select the picture folder iphoto opens, nothing to drag. Help please? 2013 iMac

I want to back up my iphoto library to my external drive, but can't find it it in my computer's tree. When I click pictures in the tree, it launches iphoto and there is no file name or icon to drag. What am I missing? I'm sure it is simple what ever it is. Help please?

now that you have found your iPhoto library you can drag it to the external drive to backup it up
If you launch iPhoto does it work properly?
However, when I tried to relocate it to the pictures folder, I get a message that I can't add the library because the folder is defective or damaged.
Exactly what are you doing? what is the exact error message?
And as to
Should I trash the pref file for pictures folder and try again?
I have no idea what you are speaking of - files and folers do not have Pref files - only applications have Pref files

• My Iphoto library has recently updtaed itself with a same picture icon for every event. I backed up all my photos and deleted all the events in the library. When I imported  a fresh batch of pictures the same picture appeared as the key photo. Help

Hi,
My i photo events in the library have updated themselves with a key photo. I really do not want this picture as a key photo on every event.
I backed up and deleted my entire library. After importing a fresh event, the key photo still remained the same. How can I stop that.

Sorry to ask but since we onlhy have words to comunicate with here using them correctly is critical
iPhoto is an application and lives in your Applications folder
Your photos are in a database which by default is names iPhoto library and is in your pictures folder
I still have Iphoto on my computer.
Is this the application of the intact non-functioning liPhoto library?
I have copied all the pictures on a USB so I wont loose any data.
exactly how did you do this?
Then I deleted all the pictures.
and exactly how did you do this?
Have you done this?
If so what were the results?
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your thumbnails (you may need to do several times)
