Help: iPod classic, cannot install or de-install software

When I load the iPod CD for Windows, it errors out with "1628:failed to complete installation" but it shows up in my add/remove software section of control panel. When I try to de-install it, it errors out with "internal failure 0x80040707 description" so I am hoping someone can help me either complete the installation or remove the partially installed software. Very frustrating as I just received an iPod shuffle which I cannot download software for because it errors with "this installation cannot directly upgrade the version of iPod software found on this computer. Please uninstall the iPod software and try again." HELP! Thanks!

Some of those error message numbers are a bit of a blast from the past. (especially the 0x80040707.)
Try the following procedure:
go into your Add/Remove programs, and uninstall every entry you find in there called "ipod for windows {date}" or "ipod updater {date}".
if Add/Remove won't let you remove one of those, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to remove the installation configuration of any entries called "ipod for windows {date}" or "ipod updater {date}". (Launch CleanUp, find those entries in the list of programs given in CleanUp, select the relevant entries and then click "Remove".)

Does an itunes install go through properly after that?

  • What version of iTunes should I use for my 160gb iPod classic with a 2.0.1 software?

I have a 160gb iPod classic with a 2.0.1 software. I just had my laptop fixed and I downloaded the new iTunes but I can't sync my iPod. I think this is because it's not compatible with each other (am i right?) Well, anyway, I need to know what verstion of iTunes to use so that I can sync again on my iPod. Thank you!

    hi PT the devil advocate,
    The first reason why I'm suggesting this is because of the first question ask in this post;
    sphericalcamel wrote:
I updated iTunes to whatever is current through software update, but when I tried to run it I was informed that it needed 10.4.9 to run (and for some reason software update didn't pick up that requirement).
The second reason, is because you will not receive full support on older software version. Like said above, you cannot buy song with an older iTunes version.
Beside, I said in a previous reply of this post that this is my personal preference to keep software up-to-date and that _I do understand_ that other person could prefer to stick with software version that have been proven to work well and not update. Having say this, I do not beleive that you need to play the devil's advocate here.
Nevertheless, this is normally suggested to keep software up-to-date in order to prevent either security issue (lot of updates are for improving security) and also for bugs issue. I'm not suggesting to buy Leopard here. I'm only saying that 10.4.2 is out-dated by 9 version which are free upgrade and that at version 11, 10.4 should be quite mature now for all computer.
For me, based on this, I do not see any reason why someone should not be running previous version than 10.4.11. If there is sleeping bugs running 10.4.3 and not 10.4.2, I'm suggesting to adress this issue instead because _there must be a solution to this_.
In order to solve the issue, I'm just suggesting to post it on Tiger forum.

  • IPod Classic will not sync since installed iTunes 11

iPod Classic will not sync properly since installed new iTunes. Always stops at or around song 2 and just hangs there, even if left all night. Tried restoring the iPod, made no difference. Tried syncing just some songs, sometimes it will do 20 or so but not more than that - and I have 10,000 songs.
Saw something about problem with Winsock and reset that but no effect.
Recently been re-recording CDs in Apple Lossless with 'Convert to AAC' selected for iPod. Maybe the conversion process is causing the block? But it did not before.
I also tried moving the itunes material from the Synology NAS to the PC as I thought the processing power might be the problem. It synced once after that, now it is blocked again. Tonight I tried selecting only the original AAC files and it seems to have worked for them, my problem therefore seems to be the Apple Lossless - unless the syncing of AAC files is another one-off.
Not for the first time I wish I had not updated iTunes because it so often leads to problems of some kind. Why do they not care?
    Any

Update: following successful sync of AAC files, I changed the setting to 'manual' for music & videos, used the View menu to restore the old sidebar, and manually added the Lossless files to the IPod. That actually seems to be working (very slowly). But it would be better if Sync worked as it should.

  • Ipod Classic cannot access songs

Hi I have an ipod classic 80g. When I connect it to the itunes i can't click on the songs and i also can't add new content to my ipod. help!
screen shot of what it looks like
    http://tinypic.com/r/1y94ia/6

I had a very similar problem. I came across this post early on and it did not have an answer or help me with my situation - so, when I got my situation fixed, I thought I would come back and give my solution to see if it would help.
Reset ipod (toggle hold then hold down menu and select buttons until apple appears on screen)
Remove iTunes 9 (drag to trash)
download iTunes 8 (easy to find with a google search)
Install itunes 8, after installation when you open iTunes it will tell you the library was created with a new version... so what! restart iTunes while holding down the option key. tell it to create a NEW library- name it what ever your not going to use it.
plug in the iPod... i got an error saying the firmware on ipod was not the same as itunes and to install additional ipod support from OSx disk... DO IT! (additional software - ipod support)
    restart mac
open itunes plug in ipod and it should recognize it.... now it should tell you that your ipod has a firm ware update... do it! Once that is finished and has rebooted your ipod and you can see it again in the itunes menu- update itunes back to version 9.
Done! Simply point your itunes music folder back to where all your tunes are located and import the entire thing (my itunes folder is about 40gb and this took only 5 minutes)
resync music to your ipod and you are done. and you are on the newest version of itunes with your classic ipod!

  • Ipod classic "cannot play" with jvc kd-hdr50 car stereo?

When I plug my ipod classic 160gb into the usb input on my JVC KD-HDR 50 car stereo I'm getting "cannot play" on the display. This is the first time that I've had this happen.  I did reset the ipod and tried a different usb cable but still have the same problem. Can anyone help me with this problem?

I solved the problem using the reset button on my JVC car stereo. Works fine now.

  • IPod Classic: Cannot Restore?

For a long time now my iPod couldn't sync new music from my iTunes, but the songs originally in it still played. So I waited it out. But last week, I couldn't stand it anymore so I tried asking around, and they told me I should just restore it. I plugged it in and it said:
"iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
And I know, because I've tried, that the latter does not do anything to help at all. So I clicked RESTORE. And when I do so, it tells me a newer version (1.1.2) has been downloaded and asks whether or not I want to restore with the old version or the new. If I choose USE NEW VERSION:
"Are you sure you want to restore the iPod "iPod" to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased."
    a) At this point, they already changed my iPod's name.
    b) I, of course, clicked RESTORE.
It then says, "Extracting software...". Then, "Restoring iPod..". Next it tells me that my iPod is restored & it's restarting & to keep my iPod connected. My iPod shuts off, turns on, but does not appear in iTunes or my computer. The iPod is now empty but 1 of the original games still won't work.
Sometimes it says that it could not be restored because of unknown error. Now, when I open the iPod, click Vortex, it loads, then shuts down. And restarts. So, it constantly shuts itself down now. And there's nothing left in it. When it shuts down, it is as if it reset itself. It goes back to the Choose A Language Page and all changes made (like the date) are reset.
Side notes: I had a friend take my iPod home to check if it was just my computer, but it did the same thing.
I have warranty until October (If I bought the iPod at Futureshop, do I go there, or to the Apple Store to ask for help...?).

    Help would be greatly appreciated!

ive been having the same issue for months, i tried reinstalling iTunes, restoring my iPod.. and everything..
nothing works.. its a brand new iPod, and i couldnt get any music on it.
this iPod was a replacement for my iPod classic that the screen broke while under warentee, and now i can get music on my iPod, but not video.
for some reason my comp freazes, and crashes anytime i try to load my movies, or TV shows.
and recently it keeps giving the error of "The iPod cannot be synced. the disk could not be read from or written to"
and it says that it cannot be restored..
    how do i fix this?

  • IPod Classic Cannot Be Read Or Written To Or Restored

    Hi,
I have a 160 GB iPod classic which had about 40 GB free on it, but I cannot get iTunes to synchronise or restore.
    If I try to synch,  iTunes shows the following error message;
'Attempting to copy to the disk "Andrew's iPod Classic" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.'
So tonight I thought i should try and restore it, but after several minutes it popped this error message:
'There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod "Andrew's iPod Classic". You do not have enough access privileges for this operation.'
After having selected the OK button my iPod has nothing on it at all now. So whether i try to synch or restore, it always shows those two error messages.
I also tried using the "Manage Tracks & Playlists' option. But although I can see the tracks i manually moved over in the ipods music section when its connected to itunes, they dont show up on the iPod itself when i have ejected it from the computer.
My iPod is about 18 months old, so no warranty repair possible.
I have tried for several evenings to sort this, and cannot understand the problem.
Can anyone please advise me how to proceed?
Im using OS X 10.7.5 iTunes is 10.7 and my iPod is 2.0.4
    Thank you.

Try repairing permissions on the disk using Disk Utility. If that fails, do a low level reformat instead using the instructions in this article.

  • Need expert help - iPod Classics will not play recently downloaded songs

Sparknotes version of this question, so you don't need waste your time if you aren't interested:
    -iPod Classic skipping over songs
-problem with iTunes transferring the files
-need help ASAP, we DJ with these iPods most weekends
Multiple iPod Classics are skipping over songs and will not play them.  This is a recent issue and these ipods are not new - we have been using them for several years now.  The playlist and the Macbook from which the playlist came are also not new.  The playlist copies onto the ipod so that i can see it on the device, but after unplugging the ipod and trying to play a song the screen just gets stuck for a few seconds, with the play symbol showing in the toolbar, but then skips to another song until it can find a song it can play.
After some investigating i found that my itunes must not be properly copying the playlist - it shows up on the ipod, but when i view the ipod contents in itunes, that playlist is not there.  Upon a second attempt at copying the playlist to one ipod, i found that all files still show up in the song list, some files are now playable, but not all.  My husband and I are DJs and one can understand that this is quite a predicament, when all of our ipods suddenly only play certain songs.
Restarting the ipod does not solve issue.  Again this is an issue with multiple iPods, so i am thinking that maybe it is an iTunes problem but i don't know where to begin trying to fix it.  One thing i did notice was that when i plugged the ipods, iTunes sat in the "verifying iPod" stage for quite a while.  I found some past forums that touched on this but it seems to usually be connected to updating the version of iTunes, and i have the most current version (10.6.3).  This playlist was made years ago and the files should not be corrupt, at least they have worked fine in the past.

I find this concept worth considering. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathtub_curve
The one year limited warranty ought to see you through "early failures". I have a sneaky suspicion that extended warranties are intented to cover "random failures" before "wear out" failure becomes likely which is why such cover is often limited to 3 years, the period when it is least likely to be needed.
In your case, assuming there is no obvious physical cause that has been overlooked, it would seem to be a random failure in years 2/3. Not common, but they will happen to someone.

  • Help iPod Classic Reboot Loop!

My iPod classic resently got the corrupted message when I was using Windows Vista, so i restored, and low and behold my iPod ( out of warranty by the way) is now stuck on the infamous reboot loop!
I'm using a macbook pro now, but still nothing
Does anybody know any fixes for this?
    Cheers
    Jack

Alright, so I finally decided to just call Apple and see what was going on. I got talking to someone and explained my problem, about how the iPod wouldn't reformat and such, and he told me that something was wrong with the connections or something inside the iPod. Which in short means my iPod is dead, lol. Since it's only 2 months old though they're going to replace it, so they're sending me a box to ship my iPod back in, then once they recieve my iPod they're just going to send me a brand new one (and yes, a new one, not a refurbished one, I asked) and not even bother trying to just repair my old one, which leads me to believe that he's heard this problem already multiple times....
So basically I should be getting a new iPod in 10 days he said. Now I get to spend my break reimporting all my cd's.... score. This will be my 4th iPod... you'd think I'd have learned by now.. but no... lol.

  • Please help Ipod Classic stopped working

My Ipod Classic has stopped. I followed previous instructions. to get to the white screen and the hard-drive and now instead of the red cross it says
SMART DATA  (Cant open device)  ERROR! Diag Holt
    What do I do now?

Did you try a hard reset?  To do this, make sure the hold switch is in the Off position.  Then press and hold both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.  This may or may not work the first time around, so give it a couple of tries if necessary.

  • My Ipod Classic cannot be synced because it cannot be found.  Help?

IPOD cannot be found when I try to sync it on my desktop Windows XP.  Haven'tt been able to sync it for over a year.

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.
