HELP, ipod not detected won't work

AAARRGGG
I have a 30gb video ipod that has worked just fine for a month. i turned it on this morning, went to watch a show and all was fine until the show was supposed to start.
now it's just a black screen, not off,you can tell it's on. i tried everything, toggle the hold button, turning it off, nothing happens.
so i plug it into the port, and itunes doesn't even detect it so i can't reset it.
OMG HELP

The toggling is just to explain to a crashed iPod that you're gonna reboot it; it's the first step in the reboot key sequence.
Glad your iPod's up and running again!

I have a similar issue - my iPod nano connects and is visible in Device Manager yet invisible in My Computer and iTunes. I've tried everything I can possibly think of to try and solve this myself, all in vain.
Mine is a nano 4G. I've been using it for quite some time without the slightest problem. I have been using WINAMP instead of iTunes to manage my darling nano.
Then, one fine day I bought a new computer and the nano would not show up in My Computer, though the nano display shows "Do not disconnect". On my old computer it worked (and still works) absolutely fine with win XP as well as with win7 (the later I currently use on my new/problematic computer, which I bought last summer and that's how long I've had this problem).
Of course, after several first attempts I gave up and installed iTunes. I've tried using the Apple support article "iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows":
    - reset
    - fully charged,
    - cable works fine on two other computers
    - in normal or disk mode makes no difference
    - tried to find anything useful in the diagnostics mode
    - reinstalled iTunes several different times since then to the latest version
    - I've unplugged every other USB device except for my mouse and keyboard and tried several different USB ports on my motherboard (USB 3.0 and conventional), as well as trying different USB- related options in my BIOS.
    - I've never used any Mac with this ipod
    - I've tried fiddling with the win7 Services by stopping and restarting them and of course
    - uninstalling the iPod drivers in Device Manager. After such an uninstall the ipod would automatically be recognised and "ready for use", i.e. being invisible in My Computer.
    - Attempted to find any possible third-party conflict with msconfig or the possibility that my ipod is being confused for a network drive (for which I've disconnected my HDD, leaving only my SSD with the OS).
Sometimes, iTunes would note that iPod service (or something, can't remember exactly) failed to install properly and asked to try and repair it. I would click YES! and voila - no change! The ipod would rarely show up in iTunes on my problematic computer like this:
iTunes would warn me that the nano would need restoring so I would try and do it on my haunted machine upon which iTunes would freeze like you seen in the picture.
Despite this, I've updated and restored the nano on my father's computer to the latest version without any problems. This though, did not solve my problem in any way.
I can load music to my nano through my old computer (which for me is a real pain and hassle) and the gadget works normally in terms of its disconnected functionality.
I've taken my nano to the local service for repair and they said it was fine. Mercifully, they didn't charge for the diagnostics service (gee, thanks for not ripping me off!).
Here are two screengrabs from my Device Manager
and Devices and Printers screens on my comp:
That is my sad story as far as I can remember. It's most likely something with the drivers or something along those lines though I'm out of ideas at this point.
If you think you have any idea PLEASR HELP, I'M DESPERATE!

I forgot my password and am trying to reset my ipod, but it won't work.It says that my ipod is in recovery mode and that I must restore it. I click ok, and then click on restore and update. Then it says connecting ipod software update server and a screen pops up with ipod software update on the top and iOS 5.1. It lists a bunch of stuff this update contains and on the bottom it says next, which I click and nothing happens, it just goes back to the ipod restore page. Help, what am I doing wrong?

This device is not eligible for the requested build (Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194")
Update to the latest version of iTunes. Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) users may need to download iTunes 10.6.3.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

I have just brought a new ipod and it won't work with my old imac as it is running pre 10.5 software. I can't upgrade the software, so what should I do?

There is nothing to do, unless you buy a new computer.
Mac OS 10.5.8 or later is required.

  • IPod touch 3G won't work after falling in water? Help!

Ok it's been 3 months since my iPod touch fell in the...toilet. I immediately put it in rice after pushing all the buttons. It was only in the water for a second. When I picked it up the screen was dim, flickering, then when black. I wiped it off and put it in rice. I left it in rice for about four days. I finally plugged it up to the charger and after 20 minutes it came on. It told me I needed to plug it up to iTunes so I did. I restored it and when it was restored I tried to slide the bar at the bottom of the screen but it would never register. So I let it die and when I charged it again it wanted me to restore it AGAIN! I've restored it about five times!! Each time the touch screen won't work and it doesn't hold a charge very well. Also every time it does it wants me to restore it. What's wrong with it and how can I fix it? Oh and the home button doesn't work.

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.

  • Ipod not detected in Windows 8.1

    Hi
Ever since feb when my computer updated to Windows 8.1 it wouldn't detect my ipod. I thought that my ipod nano was old and broken so I bought a new one. However, it did the same to that ipod so I know now that it's not the device itself but rather windows perhaps. I was wondering if anyone had the same problem? I unistalled and reinstalled a billion times (it seems to me) but then I finally unistalled the whole apple software and reinstalled it but it won't work because the apple something (device help software) isn't installed. I thought that it comes with the whole thing? Anyways, if anyone can help me that would be LOVELY! I am so tired and irritated with this whole deal I just want everything to work back to normal...

    Hello itsmissnicolee,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that your iPod is not appearing in iTunes.  If it is being recognized in My Computer but not iTunes only, please follow the steps in the article below.
iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes

If you don't see your iPod in My Computer, follow these steps:

  • My ipod charger cord won't work unless I put presure on it

This is my second iPod touch I've got, first one had a home button problem and got a new ipod and now it's my charging/syncing system not working,
home button won't respond until I press real hard and the earphone port won't work, I can't hear. I need help asap. My warranty is expired so I don't know what to do, should I buy a new one? Thanks

It appears that your iPod encountered an error and you have to restore via iTunes. That is how it works.
    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Ipod not charging, won't connect to computer, even replaced battery ...

My ipod won't charge, I plug it into the AC adapter and it says charging and you can listen to music and whatnot when its plugged it. Even if it stays on there for days it doesn't charge. Every time I plug it into the computer it just says please wait, battery very low even if you leave it there for hours. Was able to get it into disk mode on the AC adapter but when I unplug it to try and hurry and put it onto the computer, it dies. Used a dock as well and many different cables and nothing works. Replaced the battery and it was half charged and I was able to go and listen to music with it for not even half a day though wasn't able to charge it. When it died I charged it and it won't charge. Not I tried to plug it into the wall charge and it won't even turn on like it used to. Plugged it into the computer and after a few tried for a little battery with a triangle warning sign on it then it died. Plugged it in again and got a please wait then it shut off. **** thing won't work and I've tried everything. Help please.

Well I took the darn ipod apart and switched out the hard drives with a extra one my friend gave me since he has an itouch now. He mentions by the way he's sick of all the problems apple products have like the ipod, his itouch and the mac he uses at school.
Anyways was able to put it into disk mode and it goes to the restore thing. I left it restore with the computer fully on and whatnot and it take hours, first time a couple of hours and it completes then shuts off and says please wait very low battery.
Next morning I take out the hard drive and put the old back in and I can put it into disk mode and try to use the restore thing again. It took from 9 am to about 9 pm to finish though it shuts off and goes back to the please wait low battery screen. So fed up with this. Nothing is apparently working and I'm ready to murder this **** thing with gasoline and a lighter.
The only thing that's switch besides the hard drive and battery which I keep swapping out is the face plate since my friend had a black one and mine was white, doubt that can really be a problem and if it is, thats stupid.

  • :( my iPod not detected by Windows.

    Hi,
I've a iPod-Shuffle. Till last week it is working fine. I'm experiencing the problem from this week. When connected to the PC thru USB, my PC did not detects the iPod.
Atleast it didn't turn up any error message. Pls. Help me.
    thanks in advance.

    Hello Alapati,
Could you be a little more specific on what the issue is? When you turn the Shuffle on, does the light stay green? Or when you plug it in to the USB the light flashes amber and green but your computer does not recognize it?

  • My iPod touch speaker won't work and the headphones don't work sometimes

If I try to play a song or video without headphones it won't have sound and sometimes I can't listen with headphones either. I tried reseting the iPod and restoring it but it still won't work. Please please help. I just got it a few weeks ago and haven't dropped it or gotten it wet I have no idea how this happened

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

It's alright, but a better place to post questions about Tiger's Mail application would be the Mac OS X > Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger > Mail & Address Book discussion area.
