HELP... Ipod not recognized. USB device has "malfunctioned"

I think I've tried everything posted on every discussion thread. When I plug my ipod into my computer, it detects an unknown device. Then I get an error message that says the USB device connected to the computer has "malfunctioned" and needs to be replaced. The device properties say there is no driver installed (i tried updating drivers with no luck)... I am scheduled to go into the store tomorrow to have someone look at it, but if anyone has any suggestions that would save me the $100 to get it fixed or $250 to buy a new one... That would be great.

i had this same scenario. my 60 gb ipod photo would not detect in windows xp either via usb. i'm assuming you have a usb connection and this is my solution based on what you have wrote....... what i did... instead of using a regular usb connector i installed a fire wire pci card and everything is working good now. something in windows xp regarding usb is really annoying!!!! try it

I'm running Windows XP with external hard drive. When hard drive is connected, iPod will not sync and I get message stating "USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices has malfunctioned..."
When disconnect the external drive, he iPod appears in My Computer. However, iTunes is on external drive; therefore music is not syncing onto iPod. I've attempted the 5 R's as well as searching for iPod in Device Mananger. When iPod is conncected, it is listed in Devce Manage as "Unknown Device."
I've changed drive letters on boh iPod and external drive and get the same message. Please help.

QRe: Zen MX Causes "USB Hardware has Malfunctioned" Msg from Windows XpyUhh, Yes.
I used to same cable to attach my Motorola Razr and the computer correctly found it and identified it as such.
I also tried another cable (brand new) same thing.
I went to recovery mode and did a "CLEAN UP" but no dice.
I also got my I.S. tech guy to look into it and on the USB page it say "UNKNOWN DEVICE"? when he tried to delete it it did not help, it just reappears as "UDVC"? Also in looking into it it seems to have no drivers.
He came to this site and tried to do somethinm through here but it did'nt work.
Now in listening to it last night it began to 'skip' or what I call 'HICCUP" terribly. Where a song starts and stops, during the middle of it. ? It's always done it a little but it has been getting more and more common and now? It's WAY worse about it.
It has never been dropped, or nishandled in any way. I bought the clear hard case to protect it. And only has about 300 songs on it. Never used for anything else. No vids no pics, nothing.

  • IPod Nano: Error Message "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it"

Hi everyone, I just received 2 brand new iPod Nanos for my kids for Christmas, thought I'd be smart and sync them both now before wrapping them so I don't have to be messing around with them on the day. One synced without a problem, then using the same cable, same computer, same USB port, the 2nd one came up with "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it" I've tried restarting my computer, unplugging and reinserting the USB. Is there anthing else I can try before returning it? Thanking you for any help.

I have solved my problem, I ended up ringing Apple and got an awesome lady who told me to reset it by pressing the sleep button and menu button together for about 10 seconds and once it actually turned on for the first time the computer then recognised it, so it's all good, :-) Thank you lovely lady!

  • USB Device Not Recognized - USB device attached has malfunctioned & Windows does not recognize it

I have an HP Pavilion dv4 Notebook running Windows 7 Home Premium and the USB ports worked fine for an HP deskjet printer and an older Casio digital camera. Then one day, the laptop decided not to recognize the Casio digital camera and gave the error message "USB Device Not Recognized" and also indicated that the device attached to the computer has malfunctioned. This prompted me to buy a new Canon digital camera. Well, a new camera did not fix the problem. Now, anything connected to either of the 2 USB ports will not be recognized by my laptop. Help!  I'm at a loss to figure this out.  I've tried the suggested Microsoft help below:
Suggestion 1: For the issue with USB devices, uninstall and re-install all the USB controllers. This lets the controllers recover the USB port from its unresponsive condition.
The USB controllers represent the USB ports in Device Manager.
    a. Click Start, type device manager in the Start search box and hit Enter.
    b. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Note: You might have to scroll down the list to find this item.
    c. Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click Uninstall to remove it.
    d. Repeat the above step for each USB controller that is listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    e. Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.
    f. Check the USB device to see whether it is working.
This did not correct the problem.  Then from device manager, I tried updating drivers on all the USB controllers and root hubs. While some may have received downloaded software updates, it still did not correct the USB device not recognized problem after restarting the computer.  I'm hoping someone knows of the fix to this situation and can pass it along to me. Thanks for reading and posting any help.

    Hey 655micha,
I'm sorry you're having an issue with a USB device. Do you get an error window that pops up? If so what does it say? Have you checked Device Manager? Is is just one device that isn't working? Has it ever worked before? Is it just one USB port in particular that isn't recognizing devices?
What model do you have? Here are the steps to find your product number. FN + ESC is the easiest way to find that information.

  • One of the USB devices has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it.

    Self Explanatory.
    but ill go into detail.
my topic is the message i get when i plug my ipod into my computer. It neither charges nor acknowledges the ipod nano there.
I need some feedback on whether or not to buy a new cable or give up hope on my nano.
Thanks for your time. (and if you read this and dont post then dont read it. Darnit too late...)

  • USB device has malfunctioned

Ive had my shuffle for about 6 months and all was good with it until I had to reinstall windows. Now when I plug it in I get 'one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it'. Its not a problem with my USB ports as other mp3's work fine so does my mouse and printer. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution for it?
    Thanks

This won't help you any but it is additional info. I encountered the same problem about 3 months ago. In addition, once I hit this problem with the shuffle I found that none of my USB sticks would function on that particular computer either. I even went to the extreme of reinstalling XP but the problem continued. I could not get the PC to wsee the Shuffle and USB sticks until I installed a new USB hub. After that the PC and iTunes would see the shuffle (and USB sticks).
HOWEVER, iTunes says there is a problem with the shuffle and asks if I want to restore it. When I select the restore option iTunes plays around for a while then tells me there is a problem with the shuffle (error 1418).
I tried the seperate reset utility. After it chugs around for a while it tells me it had encountered an error that prevents it from formatting the disk.
One thing to mention at this point is the shuffle plays through the ear buds fine. I am just at a point now where I have to be happy with the music on the shuffle as I can't add or change what is there.
Best I have from apple is ask for a service agreement.

  • Toshiba PX1267E-1G32 Ext HD Error Message says USB device has malfunctioned

    Hi
I have Windows XP and have been using my Toshiba External HD for a few years.
    I am a novice.
Suddenly yesterday the below message appeared and I cannot get any computer to recognise the device.
    "+USB Device Not Recognized+
+One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it. For assisstance in solving this problem click this message+."
I've tried to reinstall the drivers from the internet & the HDD CD but the same message occurs.
I've installed it onto another computer and the same error message.
The device still makes a noise and the blue light is on but no other action.
Is there anything I can easily do?
    Many thanks in anticipation

    > I thought that sort of stuff wasn't meant to happen to external drives....
Why not? The external HDD is the same like an internal notebook HDD which dies as well
    > Any other suggestions welcome
    I assume this is a 3.5 HDD
You could remove this HDD from the HDD case and could connect this HDD directly to an desktop PC using an IDE or SATA cable (Im not sure if this is an SATA or IDE HDD).
If the BIOS would recognize the HDD then you would have good chances to get access to the data stored on this HDD.

  • Solution for XP not recognizing USB device ...

Hope this helps ... here's how I got my XP machine to recognize the IPod.
    1) Un-installed all the software (not sure if this was critical, but it is part of the order of events I followed).
    2) Next, I unplugged the IPod from my desktop and unplugged the USB cable from the IPod. Then --- I plugged the USB cable into my desktop FIRST and then plugged it into the IPod.
TBy plugging in the USB to the desktop first, I seemed to jiggle XP into recognizing the IPod. Now I can just connect and disconnect the IPod like any other USB device.

I had the same problem. Try this. If you've recently done the uninstall/reinstall software phase, don't bother again. The problem, at least for me was NOT the computer, it was the nano.
Reset the nano. Push the hold button till you see orange and then back again, lay it on the table and press the center of the circle (select) and the Menu at the same time, hold it 6 to 10 seconds until you see the apple.
Then, plug your cable into the computer first, wait a minute, then plug it into the apple and WAIT (if you are so inclined, this is a good time to say a quick prayer).
It worked for me, hope it works for you.

  • HELP-iPOD NOT RECOGNIZED BY WINDOWS!!! UNIQUE ISSUE HERE!!

I have a 4GB silver mini. The following things happened:
I have a new laptop. This is the first time I plugged in an iPod in it.
For this case I'll refer the USB port that goes into the computer as USB and the Port as the plug that goes into the iPod from the iPod USB cable.
1.) So my iPod was fully charged and I decided to plug the iPod USB cable into my laptop at the same time that the Port was in the iPod. And it was taking a little bit longer than I thought it would for the laptop to recognize the iPod, so I unplugged it. When I did that a message popped up from the Windows XP taskbar saying "Found New Hardware: A problem occurred during installation."
2.) When I plugged it back into the original USB port on the computer, it didn't work so I plugged the iPod USB wire into the other USB connection and when the iPod didn't respond again, I knew something was up.
3.) I resetted the iPod. Uninstalled iPod and iTunes software. Reinstalled it. Uninstalled the USB Root Hubs and the other USB devices and then reinstalled them by going to Action->Scan for Hardware Changes in Device Manager. Still didn't do anything. Tried to Restore my iPod using the iPod Updater software, but got a "Can't mount iPod" message.
4.) Here's the weird things I noticed. When the iPod port is plugged in and the USB is connected to the laptop at the same time, the iPod screen shuts off-but still charges. During this if I unplug the iPod Port from the iPod while its still connected to the USB in the laptop, the battery instantly weakens and dies no matter how fully charged it was before. Also, when I unplug the iPod from the USB port, the backlights turns on for a few seconds, indicating that iPod knew it was unplugged.
5.) One thing that also happens when I loosen the Port wire from the iPod while its still in the USB is that it displays the same "Found New Hardware: A problem occurred during installation" pop-up came again except sometimes it says "OK To Disconnect" with a Check Mark symbol. But it still doesn't fix the error after I disconnect it and then connect it again. In one instance when I did this, my iPod beeped a few times like a stopwatch.
6.) I talked to Apple Tech support, but they pretty much sent me 2-3 links giving me ideas of what to do. All of which I tried. No luck
I know this is definetely a unique problem, but any suggestions or any responses from Apple Tech Support will be extremely appreciated!!!

You need to connect the ipod to the laptop and see if it show in windows under "My Computer" as IPOD or Removable storage.

The image above shows the error I am getting when I plug in my iPod. It used to work until I updated the software, now, that error message only pops up every now and then.
It is an iPod Mini, Green. We are using Windows XP and this problem is one that I am worried about.
    1. How can I fix this problem?
    2. How can I avoid it in the future?

    first of all
state your computer setup as in mac or pc and what setup as in if you have pc what windows version and what hardware and if mac what osx version and if linux what distribution ..........
think of it like when you go to the doc you don't just state your name and the doc knows everything

  • Help: ipod not recognized by computer(s)

    Hi,
my ipod (4G) has had problems: sometimes skipping songs. etc. So I decided to reset it. But the problem: It isn't seen by the PC (Windows XP) at the explorer level (same with iTunes), not by
the disk management, not by the ipod update (which dies with "internal error"). It's only seen at USB level. I installed a new updater, I changed USB, I tried 3 different computers.
Meanwhile the ipod freezes ever computer I connect. So no chkdisk, rstore or whatever is suggested.
What really annoys me: This is the 4th time with the fourth ipod this happens (It was changed 3 times by support - oncenow guarantee is lost). There must be some misconstruction within the ipod in general.
    Any ideas ?
    Regards,
    Christian

    Hi,
I've solved the problem. The problems occurs if you disconnect the ipod to often "unsafe". Then some files corrupt on the disc. Solution: restore ! But how, when PC is frozen.
    First:
Since nobody can give me help I tried and tried and then I noticed, that not the PC is frozen, but everything around the explorer. It has to do with explorer !
    Second:
After a long while, the ipod can be seen as removable disk.
Nothing ccould be done with it (explorer still frozen, no chance to something with other windows-tools).
    Third:
I read something about "external" tools for removable usb disks. I installed "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool", which has no "connection" to the explorer. This tool has seen the ipod as removable disk and could format it.
    Fourth:
After that the normal restore was possible and everything is fine now.

  • Sidebar not recognizing USB device but keyboard OK

USB can not be seen on the sideboard. I am so angry I can't see straight and having a GD brain tumor doesn't help because my processes are slow and it's hard to understand… So I did a CLEAN install. When I reboot with option I can see and reinstall lion like I have 3 times with my device. When I go to system profiler it sees the FING simpletec device. I mean what a bug. Mac was supporting MACKEEPER for a spell so I thought this would be a GREAT program and then they took it down. I, naturally, have done EVERY EXPLICIT THING to fix this problem. Adding a user, still didn't see it. I don't think there's an answer to this problem tonight because it BLOWS MY FING MIND and there is no answer. I wanted to use my terminal to get into the system and hopefully resove this issue. I did install MACKEEPER because it was in the F app store and now I did EVERYTHING to remove it but I have a feeling they've done something to circumvent the yoinking of their crap off the system. Switched the USB Storage1.3.5 2.dmg. Checked for drivers. Entered my stupid user name and pass 100 times on this site which is ludicurious. EVERYTHING. I've looked and looked and looked and well, it can't be such an easy solution. It recognizes my keyboard but not one other fing thing. Not my camera... I just can't get over it. I can't *wait* to get a new computer because the next one is going to be a PC because after 13 years of supporting Apple I'm just not feeling the love and I've lived with so much aggravation, lost out developing my craft because the software was not available so… I've just about had it. I've looked for programs… ugh. change
