  • Help: ipod not recognized by computer(s)

    Hi,
my ipod (4G) has had problems: sometimes skipping songs. etc. So I decided to reset it. But the problem: It isn't seen by the PC (Windows XP) at the explorer level (same with iTunes), not by
the disk management, not by the ipod update (which dies with "internal error"). It's only seen at USB level. I installed a new updater, I changed USB, I tried 3 different computers.
Meanwhile the ipod freezes ever computer I connect. So no chkdisk, rstore or whatever is suggested.
What really annoys me: This is the 4th time with the fourth ipod this happens (It was changed 3 times by support - oncenow guarantee is lost). There must be some misconstruction within the ipod in general.
    Any ideas ?
    Regards,
    Christian

    Hi,
I've solved the problem. The problems occurs if you disconnect the ipod to often "unsafe". Then some files corrupt on the disc. Solution: restore ! But how, when PC is frozen.
    First:
Since nobody can give me help I tried and tried and then I noticed, that not the PC is frozen, but everything around the explorer. It has to do with explorer !
    Second:
After a long while, the ipod can be seen as removable disk.
Nothing ccould be done with it (explorer still frozen, no chance to something with other windows-tools).
    Third:
I read something about "external" tools for removable usb disks. I installed "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool", which has no "connection" to the explorer. This tool has seen the ipod as removable disk and could format it.
    Fourth:
After that the normal restore was possible and everything is fine now.

  • HELP-iPOD NOT RECOGNIZED BY WINDOWS!!! UNIQUE ISSUE HERE!!

I have a 4GB silver mini. The following things happened:
I have a new laptop. This is the first time I plugged in an iPod in it.
For this case I'll refer the USB port that goes into the computer as USB and the Port as the plug that goes into the iPod from the iPod USB cable.
1.) So my iPod was fully charged and I decided to plug the iPod USB cable into my laptop at the same time that the Port was in the iPod. And it was taking a little bit longer than I thought it would for the laptop to recognize the iPod, so I unplugged it. When I did that a message popped up from the Windows XP taskbar saying "Found New Hardware: A problem occurred during installation."
2.) When I plugged it back into the original USB port on the computer, it didn't work so I plugged the iPod USB wire into the other USB connection and when the iPod didn't respond again, I knew something was up.
3.) I resetted the iPod. Uninstalled iPod and iTunes software. Reinstalled it. Uninstalled the USB Root Hubs and the other USB devices and then reinstalled them by going to Action->Scan for Hardware Changes in Device Manager. Still didn't do anything. Tried to Restore my iPod using the iPod Updater software, but got a "Can't mount iPod" message.
4.) Here's the weird things I noticed. When the iPod port is plugged in and the USB is connected to the laptop at the same time, the iPod screen shuts off-but still charges. During this if I unplug the iPod Port from the iPod while its still connected to the USB in the laptop, the battery instantly weakens and dies no matter how fully charged it was before. Also, when I unplug the iPod from the USB port, the backlights turns on for a few seconds, indicating that iPod knew it was unplugged.
5.) One thing that also happens when I loosen the Port wire from the iPod while its still in the USB is that it displays the same "Found New Hardware: A problem occurred during installation" pop-up came again except sometimes it says "OK To Disconnect" with a Check Mark symbol. But it still doesn't fix the error after I disconnect it and then connect it again. In one instance when I did this, my iPod beeped a few times like a stopwatch.
6.) I talked to Apple Tech support, but they pretty much sent me 2-3 links giving me ideas of what to do. All of which I tried. No luck
I know this is definetely a unique problem, but any suggestions or any responses from Apple Tech Support will be extremely appreciated!!!

You need to connect the ipod to the laptop and see if it show in windows under "My Computer" as IPOD or Removable storage.

  • IPod not recognized, therefore I can't factory reset...Need some serious help.

I received an iPod that used to belong to someone who used it on a Mac. I can tell this because under "About" it lists the serial number, which indicates it was used on a Mac and not Windows. Because of that, it can't sync with a windows computer. I need to factory reset it so it will be optimized for a Windows computer. However, when I connect it, neither the computer or itunes recognizes it. It doesn't recognize it in disk mode either. I get the message "USB Device Not Recognized". I searched for newer drivers and it says that my "Unknown Device" has the most up to date drivers. I've also reset the ipod, and uninstalled & reinstalled itunes. The ipod will charge with the usb cord connected to the wall, but not while connected to the computer with that same cord. By the way, the ipod works fine, it has music already on it and will play the music just fine.
I've followed the 5 "R" steps to try and fix my ipod, ending at the last step which is restore. I can't restore my ipod, because I can't get it to connect to itunes.
    Please help me!

    Hello cierra.estelle,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your new iPod nano.  You have taken some really good steps to troubleshoot this issue.  I found an article with a few additional steps you can take when your iPod is not recognized by iTunes or your computer.
I recommend continuing with the following article (you can skip the steps you have already taken).  Additionally, if you get to the step to uninstall iTunes, it is important to remove all the listed components in that step:

  • My ipod not recognized by the computer or itunes?

Ok, the iPod works fine playing music and watching videos and everything else it is supposed to, and it charges fine. But when i plug it up my PC to sync new music, the screen on the iPod does like normal and goes to the gray and orangeish screen that says Connected, then immediately says Disconnecting iPod and shows the little progress bar as if you had ejected it. How can it do this on it's own before anything has recognized it?
I have done everything that the Support on here has said, the 5 r's and all that, and nothing. Checked device manager on my computer and it actually says that is is plugged up and recognized, but has a yellow exclamation point beside it. The properties of it says this error...
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)"
These errors occurred two days again until now, i have made no recent updates on my computer or iPod to have damaged anything but these problems randomly occur. it's really odd and if someone could help me it would be great.

Have you carefully worked through each and every suggestion in this Apple support document?

  • New iPod not recognized in Vista PC and no devices in iTunes

Hello, plugged iPod Touch into computer and Vista showed usual little box which said automatically located drivers and installed them. But couldn't find iPod in My computer. Installed iTunes from download area. No devices in left column.
Reinstalled iTunes from fresh download. Plugged iPod in every USB point on computer, but nothing happens. IPod not found or recognized.
Tried to find USB driver in Device Manager but all have generic names and so can't identify which driver was installed for iPod. None show installation date or anything which may identify which one. Also forgot to create restore point first (kicking self - always do this normally before installing something new).
Been through Apple help pages and tried all their ideas including reinstalling. Still nothing found.
Could someone please suggest what to do, besides dropping computer out of window?
    Many thanks

  • Possible solution to iPod not recognized in Windows

I myself have a Mac, but for that last week, since Xmas, have been trying to help a friend get her kids' iPods (Xmas gifts) to work with her Windows machine. She has a Dell with Windows XP. Her whole system is 2-3 months old.
We experienced the same problem as many. iPods not recognized by her system. We tried everything, the 5R's, prayers, tears, voodoo, human sacrifice (Bob from GeekSquad), everything.
Long story short, she discovered that if she disconnects her printer (a Lexmark all-in-one) from it's USB port, and then connects the iPods, the iPods are recognized and funcion normally with the system. She restarts her computer between disconnecting the printer and connecting the iPods. Not sure if that step is necesary at this point. Must be some sort of hardware/software conflict.
Just wanted to let everyone know in case this worked for them.
    Mac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I don't usually reply in discussion sites, but after about 20 hours...doing the R's over and over, Applecare not being able to help, and one step away from giving up...I just had to say thank you! I tried everything...except removing my printer and scanner to see if they were conflicting...after I read your note, I tried, and it finally worked. Thank you so much...I really appreciate the suggestion...and my headache has seemed to go away!!! Hope that you have helped other people's stress as well! Happy New Year!

  • Ipod not recognized unless fully charged.

Hi, I recently changed my PC, I was using windows xp and everything was fine. Now, I am using Windows 7 and my Ipod is not recognized neither by my PC nor Itunes, unless it is fully charged. I did not have this issue before. Any solutions?

    Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the article below for some troubleshooting steps. While the article isn't for troubleshooting this specific issue, it can be useful in finding out if any of the settings have changed during the upgrade process.

  • IPod not recognized (for sync OR charging) after OS 4 upgrade

I upgraded to OS4 on Saturday July 10th with no problems. On Sunday (July 11) I used my iPod quite a bit. I was at a friend's house and the battery was getting low so he charged it through his computer. It charged completely and we continued using it the rest of the day. I plugged it in to my PC to charge it Sunday night and it was not recognized at all (for charging OR for syncing) through any of the USB hubs. I asked my friend the method he used to charge it that day and he confirmed it was via computer. Monday night I tried charging it through a friend's iMac. It charged halfway, though it still wasn't recognized. Tuesday morning I tried to charge it on the same computer and I got the "too much power drawn from the USB hub - HUB deactivated" message on ANY of the HUBs. It still doesn't work on my own home computer (though it HAD been working Friday night and Saturday morning pre-OS4 installation).
I'm personally running Ubuntu 10.04 but obviously only was able to charge the iPod on that system. Anytime I want to sync or download music I restart to Windows Vista (and iTunes).
I do also have apps installed, but nothing new from the previous OS - (I know that blaming third party apps is a common cop-out answer for apple techs).
I hope this wasn't too confusing. My real problem is simply described by my subject line: iPod not recognized (for sync OR charging) after OS 4 upgrade. What follows is simply everything I've done to troubleshoot. The only thing I haven't tried is restore...because my iPod isn't even recognized by iTunes.
I would greatly appreciate any help or stories related stories/situations. Strength (and hopefully solutions) in numbers!
    Best,
    Dan

Assuming you haven't got the cords mixed up with another, older iPod, it sounds like you have a couple of problems:
    1. Your computer's USB ports have quit working. Reboot your computer and see if they reactivate.
    2. Your friend's iMac generated that message because you tried to charge the device from the low power keyboard USB port. iPods need to be charged off one of the main USB ports or a powered hub.
    3. iPods not being recognized by iTunes can be caused by 1) wrong cable; 2) non-functioning USB ports; 3) iTunes not being the correct version for the iPod OS; and finally 4) Apple Mobile Device Services driver is either stopped, missing, or disabled.
To troubleshoot a problem with Apple Mobile Device Services, see the Apple support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
