HELP: iPod stuck on reset screen

just bought a new 30 GB two days ago, and I ended up putting a corrupt file on it.
got the standard alert window telling me to either restore or try ejecting iPod and connecting again. i ejected and removed iPod from USB cable, and it immediately reset. then nothing for maybe 10- 15 seconds. then it reset again. it kept this up for about an hour and a half, until the battery died. it's recharging now, and doing the same thing it was before.
i just want to be able to fix the corrupt file, but i can't get it to come up on the computer. can't get it to do anything.
any ideas, apart from sending to Apple and letting them deal with it?

Hi bwagner23,
While your iPod is disconnected from your computer (but mostly charged), can you sucessfully force it into disk mode? Sometimes that can get cause an iPod to get a bit more "in control" when it does this kind of constantly restarting behavior.
For instructions on how to put an iPod into disk mode, see this article:
Putting iPod into disk mode
If you can sucessfully get your iPod into disk mode, try connecting it to your computer for a restore (if it's recognized by iTunes while in disk mode).

  • Ipod stuck on reset screen...

I few weeks ago my ipod went black so I reset it, resulting it in getting stuck on the reset screen. I have successfully put it into disk mode and the 'set up' mode. But I cannot get it to go back to the normal setting.
When it's connected to my dock or my PC it will 'charge' but neither the dock or PC will recognize it.

  • IPod keeps showing "reset" screen, won't respond - HELP

This is my problem. I was trying to add songs to my ipod, and unfortunately my computer decided to freeze. I managed to get iTunes shut down, and safely disconnected my iPod, but ever since then it's been on the "reset" (black with the apple logo) screen. I can restart the iPod through all the different ways, it just keeps going back to the reset screen! After a while, the batteries died, so I figured I could hook it back up to the computer and maybe iTunes would recognize it (it wasn't doing so earlier). No dice; it just charged the battery, and went right back to the reset screen.
Now, I've looked through this blasted support site, and haven't found anything thats useful or doesn't lead me back to where I started. If anyone could help me, that'd be amazing. I don't want to have to get this serviced if it's just a software problem.

I am having the same problem, my ipod worked just 2 days and started rebooting over and over again, I even tried to start the ipod as an external drive but it keep rebooting no matter what I do.
I checked this support page and realized that this seems to be happening a lot.
is there any systemic troubleshooting process to deal with this?

  • Ipod stuck on diagnostic screen

my ipod nano 4 gb is stuck on diagostic screen no matter how many times i try to reset by holding the menu and the center key it reboots to the same green diagnostic screen pls help and if remove the usb cable it shuts off completly

Sounds like a hardware issue.  For one the battery seems to be completely shot since the iPod does not have the ability to stay powered on once disconnected for an external power source.
Time to send in your iPod for service either to Apple or a third party repair company.  Or start saving for a new iPod.

  • 3rd Gen iPod Stuck at Apple Screen

    Hello,
My 3rd gen iPod is stuck on the Apple screen. It is the screen that comes on when you first turn it on (or reset it). It is stuck on this screen, and each time I reset it (Menu,Play/Pause) it just goes right back to that screen. The hard drive is spinning non-stop. When I plug it into the computer the iPod does not mount, and it does not show up in my System Profiler under FireWire connections.
Did my iPod finally die, or is there anything I can try?

If you haven't tried already, do a hard reset.

  • IPod stuck in reset "cycle"

I docked my 5G iPod to update the songs, etc, and noticed it wasn't showing up in the source list. I reset the iPod per Apples instructions, and now it just cycles though the reset screen... Apple logo, screen goes dark, Apple logo, screen goes dark...
Re-resetting it does nothing. Apparently my only option is to let the battery die?

Get a screwdriver, open the ipod and pull out the battery connection - even when the screen is still on! Note that this does not mean the battery itself - that's stuck on - but it's the tiny connection which needs to be disconnected. Wait a few seconds and reconnect it and reassemble the ipod.
    It'll work fine now.

  • IPod Stuck on Reset

My iPod wouldn't turn this morning so I plugged it into the charger. Nothing happened (the screen didn't turn on). Later today I reset it and the Apple icon screen came up and sat there for several hours. It appeared to be out of power and when I tried to reset it again it would give the Apple icon and then the out of power icon. I just now plugged it into my computer with iTunes on. It gave the charging icon and then switched back to a lit up Apple icon. It does not show up in the source list for iTunes and unplugging it from my computer does not change the icon. All lights on the diagnostic are green except for the iPod being hooked up to the computer, though my computer recognizes the connection and disconnect of new hardware.
    Suggestions?

Since the release and update of iTunes 7, I have not faced any problem, but I heard a lot of articles from this forum about the errors 1417, 1418, 1428 and 50 etc. I could not make any suggestion and find a solution about it, all I could do is to copy some threads from some successful cases mentioned on this forum.
Until yesterday, I finally received a 4th Gen 20GB iPod (around 2 years old)from a friend and asked me whether I could fix it for him, which has been left untouched as a paper-weight for almost 2 months.
I tried to turn it on, and the screen was completed blank and the device looked dead. Before doing anything I prepared the following:-
    1. A window based PC
    2. A Mac computer
    3. An USB iPod cable
    4. A Firewire iPod cable
    5. An iPod AC charger
As the iPod was previously formatted on a PC, therefore I tried to plug it with a PC via USB cable, it did not response and not able to get recognized by the PC. I ejected the iPod and connected with an AC charger, after a few minutes, I did a Reset for the iPod
    How to reset iPod
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
The iPod showed an Apple sign, it stuck there for almost a minute, the screen then showed a battery with an exclamation mark sign, and after a minute, the iPod turned off itself. I was sure that the iPod carried very low battery, and could not be charged by connecting it with any computer (both Mac and PC).
I decided to let it have a charge with an AC charger for a bit longer, after 10 minute I did the Reset again, this time a sign of folder with exclamation mark showed up after the Apple sign, and again could not get recognized by a computer.
I changed my mind, and put the iPod into disk mode
    Putting iPod into disk mode
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Instead of connecting with a PC, I plug it with my Mac using a Firewire cable, it did not response, so I switched the cable to an USB, interestingly, the iPod got recognized and a window pop up indicating that the iPod needed to do a Restore. Therefore I clicked “Restore”, after a few seconds, an Error message pop-up with Error Message 1417, the sign that I have been waiting for quite sometime.
I ejected the iPod and the screen immediately showed a folder exclamation mark (a sign indicating a corrupted or a failure iPod OS). I am forced to put the iPod into disk mode again, connected with the Mac computer and open the Disk Utility
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
It managed to complete the Restore process, and started to sync with the iTunes. However, it got stuck at the song no.238 from the total of 2000. I left it for an hour, but with no process, instead the iPod became “Hot” and the iTunes showed an Error message of 1428. I ejected the iPod from my Mac computer, the iPod’s screen turn to show the famous killer icon;“The Sad iPod“.
This time it was totally dead, even failed to put it into Disk Mode and non of the computer could recognize it. Sigh, I hated to do it but I knew that I must did the following:-
Holding the iPod in my Palm, and hitting it on a surface of a Sofa with 5 attempts.
Did not surprise me, the iPod turned on and it showed the Language Menu on the screen. So, I put it into Disk Mode and connected with my window PC.
The PC showed a sign and indicated that an USB device had been connected with it. I opened the iTunes and did a Restore there.
However, an Error Message 50 showed up, but I were not worried about it, connected it back with my Mac computer with it in Disk Mode. As expected the iTunes opened and allowed me to do a Restore there.
This time it managed to complete the process and a window of register pop up. After the completed the process, the iPod started to sync with the iTunes again, which finally managed to complete the process.
I left it connecting with the AC charger overnight. In the next morning, I switched it on and have a play with it, I am so glad as it is working like a charm.
From the above experience, I would like to share it with the user the following:-
    1. It always better to charge with an ac charger instead of the computer, as when an iPod carrying with very low battery, it may not able to get charge from a computer
    2. Try to connect the iPod with a computer, switching between USB and Firewire
    3. Try to format an iPod with HD problem, with a different kind of computer e.g. Mac or PC, as the formats are totally different, the way it formats may able to solve the bad sectors on the HD
    4. It may get better chance to get your iPod recognized, if you put it in Disk Mode
I hope the following works in your case as I did.

  • IPod stuck in reset cycle, constantly resetting

I safely disconnected my iPod from my computer an hour or so ago (clicked the green thing in the taskbar, clicked "Safely Remove", etc.), and ever since it's had the black reset screen with the apple on the front, turning off and back on every so often. Does anyone have any idea what's going on, or how to fix this? I tried manually resetting it, but it stayed in the constant reset cycle, and it won't register being connected to a computer. All I can think of right now is to let the battery run down, but that'll obviously take some time.

Tried the iPod earlier and got back to where it would connect with iTunes, but iTunes said it needed to be restored, and nothing else would see inside. Restored the iPod, and now it works perfectly.

  • 80G Classic Ipod Stuck in Reset Loop, Please Help

    Hello,
My Ipod (80G classic) is stuck in the continuous reset loop showing only the apple logo. I have tried restoring it numerous times, to no avail. I have also tried uninstalling itunes and re-installing it, different versions also, this does not work either.
This is very frustrating, and I am finding no help on the apple site. Any suggestions?

I'm not clear if you've actually managed to get iTunes to restore the iPod yet. These steps should make it possible. Hold Menu+Select for about 6 seconds until the iPod resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect the iPod to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors*. Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you should be able to start iTunes and complete the restore process. I'd suggest you don't rush to put back all your music in one go. Test that the iPod works with a smaller playlist first.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
