Help! iPod won't work or connect to XP

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. All the music was erased off my 5G 30GB iPod Video last week for some reason (interestingly, the photos were still there). When connected to iTunes, it gave me an error message about needing to "reinstall the iPod software."
Today, I got a new hard drive and installed XP Pro on it. I connected the iPod via USB and the little taskbar bubble popped up saying "Found new hardware -- iPod." Next, I installed the iPod + iTunes software from the CD, restarted the PC and run iTunes. My PC and iTunes didn't indicate that the iPod was connected, so I plugged the USB cable into another slot -- nothing. (I know it isn't the USB because I plugged in a thumb drive and it works fine). I've also tried to update/restore the iPod... but alas, I can't because it's not recognized.
What happened to the iPod is even stranger. After the hard drive was wiped, I was able to turn it on and off and view photos. Now, it only displays the white Apple logo with the black background. The backlight keeps switching on and off randomly, the iPod won't turn off, and the hard drive is making the same noise it does when you change a song, only every few seconds (I assume it's doing this because it keeps turning the backlight on and off constantly).
I've only been able to use the iPod one week out of the two weeks I've had it -- and I'm really disappointed about it. Will I have to send it back to Apple? (hopefully under the 30 or 90 day warranty, whichever I qualify for)

In order to restore it, it has to show up on the desktop, I think. It doesn't. I downloaded the software, and it's waiting for me to plug in the iPod (which is plugged in).
I actually have been reseting it every minute or so since I read your post. Before I restore it, the battery icon doesn't show any lightning bolt or motion. Then if I restore it, it appears to be charging for a short time. I was wondering if I was going to have to charge it in lots of short increments (I don't have the optional charger).
I dug out the manual from under the desk. And it says that if it is extremely low on power, I may need to leave it charging for 30 minutes before it is recognized. I think from a sentence in there: "Leave iPod mini connected until at least the battery icon animates." So, maybe it is actually charging when it appears to be unconnected and has no lightening bolt.
I've turned it off and left it plugged in and am waiting for a charging battery icon to appear. If that doesn't work, I will try leaving it on and plugged in (so far it just turns off when I do that). Again, any suggestions are welcome.

I have a 5th gen Ipod and it has been working fine for the first month I've had it but recently I can't seem to get it to work with Itunes or even be detected on my computer. I've already tried all the things it says to do on the support page and none of it seems to be working. I've reinstalled everything and tried the Ipod updater but it won't work. IPod won't work when iTrip is connect to car charger

When I connect my itrip to the car cigarette lighter the iPod won't work, i.e. it will plsay the current tune but the controls don't respond and it stops playing when the current tune ends. It works ok when I disconnect the power.

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Unsync all music and resync
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem that indicates a hadware problem, likely a bad battery. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

IPod won't work off the charger

My 4th Gen iPod won't work when it's not connected to the charger. As soon as you remove it from the power source it shuts down. I have updated to the latest iOS and it's been restored. This corrected the issue for about 24hrs then it was back to random shut down and now it won't work at all.
Suggestions or does it need to go visit an Apple Store ?

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

I've been looking to see if any one had the same problem and one guy did but they tOld him it was his hardware, but I don't think it was because my friend was able to get it working but it would stop working again like in 10min. So, has anyone had the same problem and can help? Please, I will greatly apretiate it. :)

I also had problems with iTunes 7 when it first came out, but 7.0.2 is working for me and seems to have fixed a lot of the problems. It's worth a try if you need iTunes 7 for your new iPod.

ok so apperently alot of people are having this problem and its getting really annoying because i spend more time trying to fix my iPod then actully listening to it and it seems like they are alot more trouble then they are worth but here is my problem
when i connect my iPod to my computer it shows thats its connected but i can't open iTunes and it keeps saying do not disconnect on my screen but when i do everyting goes back to normal and itunes opens up
also if i already have iTunes open my iPod won't show up on iTunes and everything like freezes
ive tried restoring my ipod/udateing it but that screen freezes or when it says plug in iPod to update it and i plug my iPod in it won't say iPod plugged in or whatever it just freezes untili unplug it which says do not disconnect

Hi, if I were you I would uninstall everything that's related to the iPod (probably do a hard reset on the ipod itself also). Start out fresh. meaning download the cd that came with the ipod and go from there. i believe itunes whould be automatically updated for you once you've install what's on the cd. I have a 20G ipod with just the touch wheel. I've had it for 2 years or so now. at first i had the same sort of problem then decided to undo everything and started from the beginning. I've never had a problem since. not even with my battery. i charge mine using the BOSE speaker that's made for specifically for the ipod (it's a bit spendy, though) and only connect it to my dock (that's connected to my computer) when I'm getting music from my hard drive or cd. before i bought the BOSE speakers I have noticed that the ipod feels warm to the touch when I charged it from the dock. I've not had a problem with it being warm at all using the BOSE speaker to charge it. One more thing, if your ipod ever seems to freeze up try toggling the hold button back and forth (not too fast). mine froze once, also (sorry, forgot to mention that) and that's all i did and it started up again. i hope this helps you some what. Help! iPod won't work - started with iPod updater

Hi,
I tried updating my iPod nano today as suggested. It installed and everything fine. But when I tried updating it, it gave me an error and I couldn't use my iPod. So I tried restoring it with the updater.
Nothing worked. The "Do not disconnect" sign is up all this while. So I try restarting my computer. The DNDisconnect sign is still on but now.. nothing works. I can't do anything with it and iTunes does not even recognize it. I don't even have the iPod sign on My Computer. So I disconnect it, against my better judgement. And it gives me the exclamation sign and tells me to go to the Apple Support site.
I do.. and I follow the 5 Rs. I start by resetting it. This brings me into the Disk Mode which is where I'm stuck at now. It won't exit even when I try restarting it. I've reinstalled the updater AND iTunes and nothing seems to work still. Everytime I connect it to try to restore it with the updater, it says Service error.
Help.......?

IPod won't work - Help!

I only just received my iPod Nano 4GB as a gift and it won't work. It works fine while plugged into my PC, and I can import music from iTunes to it, but as soon as I unplug it, the screen goes a bit fuzzy, freezes and slowly fades out - despite the fact that the iPod is fully charged. It won't allow me to reset it (via the toggle button/Menu/select either, and it won't respond when plugged into the mails either, only the computer.
Please help if you can! I've never used my iPod and I'll be really upset if it turns out to be broken - especially as I'm from the UK and all of the complimentary helplines I can find on the Apple website are for US only...

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are.

Without knowing what happens when you try to restore via iTunes as the screen is telling:
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Wheel on ipod won't work- buttons are fine- can't scroll to select- help!

The ability to move up and down, and search through options and songs will not work on my ipod, because using the "spinny" motion on the circle thing won't work. AKA when I turn on my ipod I'm forced to select "music" and then "coverflow" and that's it.
All of the buttons work, it still plays music, my ipod is fully charged,and there is no indication of water damage.
