  • HELP: Ipod frozen in diagnostic mode, "hpdetect hp fail"

Hi there - any help on this would be highly appreciated - my ipod began displaying the "unhappy ipod" sign and when I plugged it in to my computer, windows said it had malfunctioned and needed resetting. I tried resetting it manually (menu and select) and then by fluke managed to enter diagnostic mode. Tried going into reset, but it didn't appear to do anything, went into HP TEST, and it came up as HPDETECT HP FAIL, and has not budged since. I can't seem to exit diagnostic mode, go onto any other tests or reset it. There are no mechanical noises coming from it either. Any ideas how to get out of this and how to get my ipod working again?

The sad iPod icon is almost certainly indicative of a hard drive failure which the diagnostic test would seem to confirm.

  • MAJOR HELP IPOD FROZEN!

okay here's the deal. i have a ipod mini thats a little more than a year old. i got it last april. a couple of months ago i was using it while working out and all the sudden it completly froze and shut off. now whenever i try to turn it on all that comes up is a apple and a frowning ipod with the website underneath www.apple.com/ipod/support. so i went to the site and it told me that i need to retstore my ipod so i tried doing that but the ipod wont even turn on so my computer wont restore it. does anyone know what i can do to restore it from my computer or if i go to an apple store will they exchange or fix it and how long will it take for them to get me a new ipod or fix my ipod now?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you didn't buy an extended warranty from Apple, then your one-year warranty is over. I doubt Apple could/would help at the store, other than telling you that you need a new one. You could try though.
    As for fixing this
You need to get your iPod into Disk Mode before you will be able to restore it. See if you can get it into Disk Mode...

  • Ipod frozen when updating

I moved 500 cds from my emac (to free up some hard drive space) to an external hard drive. I changed my itunes preference setting in "advanced" to utilize the itunes library on the external hard drive. The library has been successfully "added" to the itunes program on the emac.
When I try to update/sync my 40 gig clickwheel ipod, it freezes after updating any number of files (1489 the first try, 32 the second try, and 4409 the third.
When it freezes, nothing works, even on the emac. Including force quitting itunes. I am forced to do a hard shut down which leaves my ipod frozen with the "do not disconnect" message. Restting it ususally works, but how am I going to ever get my music onto my ipod? Thanks for any help.

    Hello bandock,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried connecting the iPod Touch in *Recovery Mode* and then restoring it via iTunes? If not, see this article for more information on getting your iPod into *Recovery Mode*.

  • HELP IPOD 7 Fitness users..sensor question

HELP IPOD 7 Fitness users..to track calories, distance pace and laps, do I need the sensor? I would prefer not to get a bulky watch and this seemed to fit the bill, but would like to see the consensus..Cannot tell if it's necessary or recommended..I've been reading the comments vs a GPS watch..I would like accuracy..

Something that uses GPS would be the most accurate, because that can track your actual movement.
The Nike+ Bluetooth "sensor" (an accelerometer) that is attached to your shoe is the next best for accuracy.  It senses and measures movement of your foot, and transmits that data to the iPod over a Bluetooth connection.  Based on this data, and your weight, the iPod can make a pretty good estimate about distance (and pace), and calories is just an additional calculated number.  I have a 5th gen iPod nano with the Nike+ kit.  I ran a half marathon; it got the distance right to about 1/10th of a mile (after 13+ miles); that's pretty close.
With your 7th gen nano, it has built-in Bluetooth, so you just need the sensor part that goes on your shoe
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA368LL/E/nike-ipod-sensor
That sensor is designed to go inside specific shoes from Nike, but you can use it with any shoe, with a "pouch" like this one
    http://www.amazon.com/Marware-Sportsuit-Sensor-Sport-Black/dp/B000ID6DTG
which straps on to the bottom two lace crossings of your shoe.  It works fine.
Your 7th gen nano also has a built-in sensor, that works as a pedometer, and you can set it for running (versus walking).  It counts the number of steps taken, and estimates your distance based on your weight and an assumed average length per step.  Therefore, it is less accurate, because the length of your step can vary, based on things like terrain, slope, pace, fitness level, etc., although it may be fine for people who run at a steady pace on mostly flat courses.  And it is convenient, because you don't need to attach anything to your shoe.  You just need the iPod.
I like my Nike+ sensor and older iPod combo.

ipod frozen on start up screen when trying to update i tunes

Redundant perhaps, but just to make it clear ... copied and pasted from the support article that likeabird referenced above...
If you can't turn your iPhone or iPod touch on or off
You may need to reset. Important: Only reset your iPhone or iPod touch if it is no longer responding. To reset, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
