HELP! Is a 2007 Macbook with no battery for $120 a good deal in 2014?

Hello. My son's school is getting rid of some 2007 Macbook Pros for $120, battery NOT included. Specs: OS 10.5.8, HD 160 GB, CPU Intel Duo core 2.13 GHz, Memory 2GB. Is this a good deal in 2014? Thanks for the input!

You need more details about the model to get an estimate of the battery cost.
You will have to get a battery from a third party, i.e. not Apple since they do not stock batteries for older models.

    Thanks.

Apple later clarified that you can still order Lion by calling the Apple store at 1-800-MY-APPLE and talking to a person. It was pulled from the Apple.com online store and the App Store.

  • I have a 2007 macbook with a cracked unviewable screen and want to transfer files to a new imac.  Is there a way to do this?

I have a 2007 Macbook with a cracked (unviewable) screen.  I want to transfer all files from the Macbook to an Imac but have no way of seeing whats on the Macbook.  How can this be done??

Yes. Put the old MacBook into Target Disk Mode then connect it to your iMac using a FireWire cable. Note that if your iMac is a new one, you may need to use a FW400 (which is what the MacBook has) to FW800 adapter.
Once the two computers are connected, use the Migration Assistant to do the actual transfer.
    Best of luck.

  • I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like excel, word etc. 13"

I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like  microsoft office products ...excel, word etc.  I am new to the apple world and have liked the idea of the MAC Book Pro 13" but really dont know if this is good enough or if the computer will soon crash?
    13-inch: 2.6GHz
    with Retina display
    Specifications
    2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    512GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Built-in battery (9 hours)2

That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.
Good luck in making your decision!!

  • Thinking of replacing my macbook with an ipad for travel overseas, can I plug my iphone4 into the ipad for charging?

thinking of replacing my macbook with an ipad for travel overseas, can I plug my iphone4 into the ipad for charging?

    no
the USB does not out out enough power to charge anything.
And if you want to share chargers it's best to share your iPad charger with your iPhone. the iPad charger is a 10W charger, the iPod ones are 5W. So it'll charge, just not as fast as 'normal'

  • 2007 MacBook with white display, vertical lines

The display of my 2007 MacBook periodically fades to white, very slowly, almost like a snowy TV screen.  The screen gets whiter and whiter until vertical lines appear, with the display still very faintly visible behind.  Firmly pressing the back of the display totally unfreezes the screen and causes the lines to disappear instantly.  Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

    A defective LCD.

  • Which OS X can a late 2007 MacBook with 4 Gb of RAM run?

I have a late 2007 MacBook 3.1 with Leopard 10.5.8 and a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo. I want to upgrade to 4Gb of RAM (Crucial) and an SSD (Crucial). If I do this, which OS X should I use?
Or if I use the stock HD with 4Gb RAM. To which OS X can I upgrade.

It's Mountain Lion after Lion. Then Mavericks (10.9) and Yosemite (10.10, current OS).
The older OS's still work just fine, though you may find that security updates don't get released for them. I haven't seen anything about such updates not being released for Lion so far, though Snow Leopard has been left behind the last few times an update was released. I would not be surprised if Lion gets dropped sooner rather than later.
The only other issue is that Safari would probably too old to work well on some websites (Gmail, for example, will show you a message that says the browser isn't supported), but you can switch to Firefox or Chrome to get around that issue.
There are free programs that do about the same as Microsoft Office - Libre Office (http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/) is one of them. Office for Mac is kinda pricey unless you can get it through a school or work license. They may end up releasing a new version in the next year or two, though they've been pushing the Office 365 subscriptions instead so who knows.
Software developers for the most part are pretty good about including the older OS's - many of them only require Snow Leopard (10.6), so that's a plus!
Best of luck with the upgrade - I think you'll find it breathes new life into that computer of yours

  • 2007 Macbook with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT Repair

Hi, I have a 2007 Macbook A1226 MB896LL/A which is showing all the signs of the GPU problems common to this model. Is apple still repairing them free of charge? Laptop does not chime, the fans are running, nothing on display but you can hear the hard drive chattering, it sort of boots to the point where if you increase/decrease the volume it makes the usual clicking sound, the keyboard backlight comes on if you cover the sensors, it ejects a CD if you press the eject key.

Just take it to the Apple store and they run their NVIDIA diagnostic test, if it fails they will pull up your serial number and see if it's on the list to be replaced.  I have a early  2008 Macbook Pro and it had the tell tail signs of a failing Video card and they replaced the logic board at no cost to me.  Took it in on Thursday, got it back today (Sat), running like a champ.

  • 2007 MacBook with upgraded RAM won't start OS Lion download

I have a 2007 13 inch MacBook Core 2 Duo (2.1 GHz) that I had the RAM upgraded to 4 GB in hopes of at least being able to have OS Lion, since I have no hopes of ever running Mavericks on this machine... (In  a perfect world, I could get my machine to run an OS compatible with what my iPhone and iPad run, but hey, I get it. It's an old laptop. My deal is, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it other than its age. Why should I have to buy a new one in the sake of connectivity? Rant over.)
I have a copy of a previous purchase of Lion in my app store purchase history, (I bought it when it first came out for my desktop) but when I try to download, it will at first not do anything, and after a restart, it appears in my dock as "paused". It gives me an option to "restart" the download, but it will stay unresponsive, no matter what I click...
I have checked and checked my system requirements (which are met to the letter and then some), my internet connection, I tried plugging my ethernet cable directly into my laptop (my AirPort is also rather old and sluggish sometimes, on top of a crummy ISP), I have plugged my power cable in, but nothing seems to work. Lion simply refuses to download, and I am at my wits end as to why. Help please!

If there is an Apple store conveniently located, you might want to get someone there to do the installation for you. It won't cost you. You do have to make an appointment.

  • How do I erase the hard drive on my 2007 Macbook with operating system 10.4.11 ?

I am going to recycle my old Macbook and want to erase the hard drive. When I go into utilities-disk utility-click on Macintosh HD-and the Erase tab, the only active button is Erase Free Space. The Security Options and Erase button are not active. How can I erase the entire hard drive? The operating system is 10.4.11.

You have to boot to another drive.  You cannot erase the drive to which you are booted.  Typically you would use the system installer discs that were provided with the computer originally.
Alternatively you can use another computer which is running OSX and put the old one in Target Disk Mode.  The old one will simply be seen as a normal hard drive which you can erase.
How to use FireWire target disk mode - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 - includes description of hardware and software requirements. [What to do if your Mac doesn't enter FireWire Target Disk Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75414], also read about [Open Firmware Password Protection|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/openfirmwarepassword.html] which can disable Target Disk Mode.

  • Connecting iPhone 3G to Macbook with dead battery

Battery died. Using Magcord for now. iPhone won't connect to download music.
Is a new battery necessary to do that??

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I doubt that's the problem. The 3G has these requirements:
    ◦iTunes 7.7 or later
10.4.11 should work with it as long as you have a current iTunes supported by 10.4.11.

  • Hello, I want to buy a macbook pro and I'm from Belgium. When there's something wrong with the macbook like the battery isn't that good anymore or another problem. Will I be able to fix my macbook at a Lab9 store, or send him to Apple?

And will I also be able to do that with the AppleCare packet? Or only if I have this?

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.

  • 2013 Macbook Air 13" battery life not as good as advertised

At full charge, the estimated battery life read a little over 17 hours. At 97%, it now reads 15:39. Like I get this is vastly better than the older Macbook Air, but it still falls quite short of the 24 hours advertised on the website. Currently, it is still at 97% but now the estimated battery running time reads 14:59. Is this normal? I accidentally drained my battery twice since I bought it at the beginning of August, and I understand that's not good for the newer batteries - could this be the reason? My screen brightness is at 50% and I have no movies or music playing. Safari is the only ap I have open.
I'd appreciate any ideas or help with this problem (that is, if it is one).
I just looked at the estimated time again, and while it is still at 97%, the estimated remaining time is at 13:48. It's taken me a little over a minute to type this.
I'm not very tech-savy - is there something wrong with the way I understood the advertised battery life?

The Air is nowhere advertised for 24 hrs. batt. life.........  in any configuration.

  • Can you help? Two dialer interfaces with IP SLA for default route failover - issues

I have an issue with a Cisco 2821, it has an ADSL2+ HWIC  whose ATM interfaces is linked to dialer 1 and a Gi0/1 interface with a pppoe client which is linked to dialer 2.  Both dialer interfaces are up with their respective IP addresses.  If the ADSL on dialer 1 fails i want the IP SLA to kick and and replace the default route for dialer 1 with one for dialer 2.
This config works if you manually shut down the dialer 1 interface, it injects the default route for dialer 2 and then when you unshut the interface, the default route for dialer 1 comes back.  The problem i have is if you take out the cable for the ATM interface and take it down, it does not take the route out the routing table and the default route for dialer2,  which works if you just shut down dialer 1 does not appear.
whats the difference between shutting down dialer1 and it fails over the default route and taking the cable out then it does not?
Here is my config, i'm sure its something simple i'm doing wrong, can anyone help???

Sure that EEM can shut/unshut interface...you have "event track" in EEM for monitoring track events...for example:
    event manager applet test
    event track 1 state down
    action 1.0 command "enable"
    action 1.1 command "conf t"
action 1.2 command "interfac dialer 1"
    action 1.3 command "shut"
action 1.4 syslog "Dialer 1 down!!!"
    action 1.5 end
This would be an example from head :)
You would need another EEM similar to this one for unshutting interface with "event track 1 state up" for bringing interface up again.
Again as I said you would need to test this before putting in production and you would maybe need to tweak this a little bit acording to your needs...
