HELP!! Is it possible to recover from "chmod -r 777 /*"?

Hi,
Sorry to have to ask this, but one of my colleagues accidentally did a "chmod -r 777 /*" while logged into one of our Solaris 10 zones with root privileges (actually, after doing an "su -"). After that, no one can SSH into the system using putty. When we try, the putty window disappears immediately.
Is there any way/hope of somehow logging into the system and recovering the zone at this point?
Thanks in advance,
Jim

Alan and Anthony,
Thanks for the quick responses. Unfortunately, there is no backup :(.
I will ask if they get logged into the global zone, but one thing I forgot to mention is that this zone (as are all our non-global zones and the global zone also) are configured for ldap logins.
Assuming that they can even try to login to the global zone, can they even see the directory structure in the non-global zone (sorry, I haven't worked with Zones much thus far) from the global zone?
Also, if they can see the non-global zones directory structure, what should they then try?
Also, I've been searching and I've seen some suggestions of running a "pkgcheck -af" which might restore the directory permissions to what the various packages expect. Assuming that they can get to the point that they can at least log into the zone, is that something that would work?
I'm setting up a new test Solaris box now, with a zone, to try to reproduce the problem. If I can reproduce the problem, I'll post back whether or not I see the same thing.
In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions, please post them.
Thanks,
Jim
P.S. In case you're wondering, the box/zone that got messed up was a test/integration zone, and they were in the process of installing some software when this chmod happened.

If not, what is the most efficient way to do so, without having to learn a whole complex program?

Is possible to recover the layers of a psd file that has been saved in pdf?
    thanks!

You could try opening the pdf in Illustrator, and copy all the objects back into Photoshop, or use this method: http://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/illustrator-quick-tip-exporting-files-to-photoshop/
...but there is a good chance Photoshop flattened parts or most of the file while converting it to pdf, so be prepared for the loss of layered work.

  • Recovering from lightroom catalog backup

    Hi,
For the past 2 months i have been using lightroom.
I used to store my original photos in E dirve(E:) and import in lightroom for processing. Unfourtanetly a week back my hard-disk crashed and i am not able to recover any files other than C Drive(C:).
Luckily had installed lightroom in C Drive(C:) only.
And i think i should be recover lightroom folders in too.
Is it possible to recover any of the photographs from the lightroom metadata stored in the lightroom folders in C:. I read in some websites about catalog backup. Would it be possible to recover from that, i never explicitly created a catalog i used to directly import to lightroom?
Kindly help me!. I would really appreciate that.
    Thanks,
    Sridhar

If you imported the files from your E drive and chose to store them on your C drive by choosing a folder on your C drive in the Import Photos dialog, "Copy to:," you will find your images on your C drive in the folder you chose. Go to the Import dialog and look under "Copy to:"  Lightroom displays the last place you copied files to.   If you chose "Add Photos without moving," the photos are not on your C drive.  However, you may be able to recover the photos on your crashed E drive using data recovery software.
When you import your photos, Lighroom creates previews which are still available, but Lightroom cannot process the photos without an actual copy of the photo to work with.
I suggest using the Backup to feature of Import Photos, backing up those originals to DVD, and backing up processed photos on portable hard disks.  It is a good idea to have off-site backups also.

    Hi finecut,
I believe this Mac Mail Help info may help:
    Backing up your mail
You can back up your mailboxes to a CD or another disk. To do this, you can either copy the Mail folder in your Library folder or create an mbox file, a common format for storing mail messages.
    ▪ To save the contents of all your mailboxes, hold down the Option key and drag the Mail folder to your desktop or to another disk. The Mail folder is in the Library folder in your home folder (~/Library/Mail).
Copying the Mail folder only backs up mail from POP accounts, or mail from an IMAP account that you've copied to On My Mac. When you are ready to restore the Mail folder, choose File > Import Mailboxes, select Mail for Mac OS X, and locate the Mail folder.
    ▪ To create an mbox copy of a mailbox, drag the mailbox from the mailbox list to your desktop.
    ▪ To create an mbox file with just some of your messages, select the messages, then choose File > Save As. In the Format pop-up menu, choose Raw Message Source, then enter a name and save the file.
You can copy mbox files to CDs or to other disks. When you want to restore your mail, choose File > Import Mailboxes, select "Standard mbox files," and locate the files.
    hope that helps,

If it is completely dead in that it is not making any noise indicating it is not spinning etc. then you cannot use any software to try and recover data, these software programs generally only help if the hard disk is physically ok but the data is damaged.
In your case it would appear to be a hardware problem and the only option would be to send it to a specialist data recovery firm. If you went to Apple they would only be able to replace it with a new one (if under warranty) and would not do any data recovery.
The specialist recovery firms would completely dismantle the hard disk and replace faulty parts to enable them to get it working and to copy the data off. Your profile does not indicate your location, but an example firm (I have no personal experience of them) is Datatrak Labs see http://www.datatrack-labs.co.uk/company_profile.asp
By the way, why have you not been making backups? Time Machine makes this so easy it is no longer excusable to not do this. I had a hard disk fail in one of my Macs earlier this year (hardware failure), but because I had a full Time Machine backup I lost nothing.

Is it possible to recover my data from iCloud backup without working wifi? I have as many other upgraded my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.0.2 with the result that the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth no longer works. However, i can connect to iTunes via cable but there is wrong version of backup.

    Answer is no.
If you want the iCloud backup you have to have n internet connection, thus WiFi.
The not working WiFi has happened with quite a number of users.
It is not exactly clear what is the cause but there are suggestions to clear it up:
Some people have had success by removing an apostrophe from the iPhone name. If your iPhone is called something like “John’s iPhone” then this might work. Go to Settings > General > About > Name and change it to something with no apostrophe.
Some people have reported success by putting the iPhone into Airplane mode and then going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings, but the problem may return.
You could also try going to Settings > Control Center and disable Access on Lock Screen then turn your iPhone off and on again.
Make sure that your router firmware is up to date.
Try backing up your iPhone and then restoring it. Check how to factory reset an iPhone for details.
If nothing is working for you, try contacting Apple or take your iPhone into an Apple Store.
    Succes, Lex

  • Hi....is it possible to print from iPad to a HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909 printer?  Thanks for any help!

Hi....is it possible to print from iPad to a HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909 printer?  Thanks for any help!

The HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909 is not an AirPrint printer, if that is what you're asking. HP has proprietary apps that may be suitable for your needs.
To print directly from an iPad / iPhone you will need an AirPrint compatible printer or another device to act as a print server. That can be a Mac computer running Printopia ($19.95 with free trial) or handyPrint (donation - supported). The Mac must be "on" but may be asleep for them to work. Equivalent PC options may exist but you're on your own finding them.
You can also buy this standalone print server:
    http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/xprintserver/xprintserver.html
These options enable you to use any printer available to your Mac, even older ones that may predate AirPrint by decades.
Otherwise you will need to buy an AirPrint printer or multifunction device.

  • HT201250 Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • My iMac has less than 2 years. The hard drive from 1TB just failed. Possible to recover data?

The support store just told me that the hard drive of my IMAC 27" is damaged and the solution is to replace for a new one. Meanwhile, I saw this: "Apple has determined that a very small number of Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems, may fail under certain conditions. These systems were sold between May 2011 and July 2011."
I bought my system a couple of months before. Anyone knows if it's the same hard drive?
Another question is. Is it possible to recover recover the data from the damaged drive?
    Best regards

If the hard drive has failed then that data is lost.  That's why you always need to maintain an up to date backup copy of your important files on an external backup hard drive.  Hard drives do fail; being an electro-mechanical device they are the weakest link in any computer.
    Hope this helps

Is it possible to recover deleted files from the Microsoft Word app for iPhone? I am desperate.

From the Microsoft Word app they say "Access Word documents from OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint" so it sounds like you can specify where they are saved. However, my guess would be that the default will be OneDrive.

  • Is it possible to recover .fcp files from a reformatted drive?

Somehow — I still don't know exactly how this happened, but it appears to be my fault, and I feel like a complete moron for letting it get to this — in the process of reformatting a buggy drive with several FCP 7 projects and media on them, I managed to reformat BOTH the original drive and the back-up drive, thus losing all of the content. I'm now trying to figure out if it is possible to recover as much as possible from the drive so that whatever was on the drive is not a total loss.
I have done a scan with Wondershare Data recovery, which gave me a list of files that it could recover, but aparently it cannot recognize .fcp files, meaning that the media can be recovered (albeit with changed names and a lost file structure), but the project itself can't.
I am now attempting a scan with Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery, but it will be quite a while before I can find out if it sees the .fcp files.
If this doesn't work, I was hoping that someone might know of software that would recognize a .fcp file, which would be a big step closer to as much of a recovery as possible.
Hard drive is a 2TB G-Drive, connected through FireWire 800.
    Thanks a lot.

I had a drive do a graceful swan dive and used an app called FileSalvage to recover the contents before it went totally bad. They were williing to work with me to craft the software to find file types that weren't in their standard database. It worked moderately well.
I thought long and hard about spending the money to send that drive to a data recovery firm (with no guarantee that they'd get more off it that was useable) and decided to spend the same amount on some good single malt. Didn't do much for data recovery but I was much happier.
    Good luck,
    x
