Help - Is my G4 ibook dead?

I have a G4 12" ibook that stopped starting up. When I press the power switch, there is no "chime" sound and display remains blank (slight grey). Power to set is ok and when Caps Lock is applied, the LED will light up.
I have tried to reset the PMU and PARM but both did not help at all. Set is already out of warrenty, could it be a logic board failure?
If it is a hard disk failure, will it behave the same as what I am seeing?
ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The startup "chime" indicates that some low-level hardware tests have passed successfully. While the startup hardware test does check for an ATA bus (so there could be a hard drive), it doesn't actually check for a hard drive itself. So, no chime would not necessarily mean a bad hard drive. Certainly, if the logic board has failed, you won't get a chime. Have you put your Mac OS X install disk in the drive and tried to startup while holding down on the "c" key? If the problem was only your hard drive, you would still be able to do this. If your logic board has failed, this may not work. You might then want to run the Apple Hardware Test to see if you can even run that. You might then be able to give AppleCare Support some more detailed information about what has gone wrong. The prices for repair in Singapore are probably different from those in the US.

  • Help - ibook dead (-ish)!

    Hi everyone.
Last night I was on the web and my ibook suddenly froze and started making this kind of clockwork-like clicking sound, which was coming from the area to the left of the track-pad.
I left it for a short while before pressing power to turn it off. Now on restart it still clicks, but I get a finder folder with a flashing question mark instead of the apple logo. Then the clicking stops, but it won't do anymore.
    What action should I take?
Is there something I can do myself? Or can I take it for a repair?
I have a care package with my point of sale. They are rubbish when it comes to Macs though. (Yeah - I know, I should have got Apple Care. Youthfull folly!) However, they do say they will replace if they cannot fix the machine. Is this a sensible option, or should I try to fix the machine?
Thanks in advance for any advice - I appreciate it!
    John.

If it's possible you could run the Apple hardware
test; take a look at the support page below for info
    on using it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50138
    Thanks.
I've run the disk utility on the installer disk - it only found three cd images, no hard drive, so I couldn't select it to try a disk repair.
Next I ran the hardware test disk. It found an error with the mass storage device, and gave me the error code...
    2STF/2/3:ATA-100ata-6-Master
I suspect this means the hard drive is poorly. I have a repair or replace deal with my point of purchase so I suppose they'll replace the hard drive. (I doubt I'll get a new macbook out of them). They are PC based though, not mac experts, which is a slight worry.
I suppose what I would like to know before I approach them is whether or not my hard drive is retreivable (I've got my files backed up, but not my software), and why the disk went down.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    John.

  • Pls help. MacBook Pro is dead. What could be the problem?

My macbook pro just suddenly won't turn on, won't charge and will not let me do anything on it. I bought it Sept 2010 and I never had any problems since.
When i plug the charger there is an orange light blinking, you wont even notice it so much. The battery life indicator on the side is not working too.
Here are the things I tried with another macbook pro:
Changed charger (my charger is working)
Changed the battery (my battery is fine) and put it back.
I saw online instructions but it seems my Mac still is totally DEAD:
    1. Holding down power button for 10secs
    2. Reset SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    3. And Safe Boot and Fsck etc.. http://www.macworld.com/article/2018853/when-good-macs-go-bad-steps-to-take-when -your-mac-wont-start-up.html
I'm hesitating to try the dvd cause it might just get stuck inside since my Mac doesnt really respond to any.
And I could just go to the Apple Store and save time and effort but it's not that easy where I live in and I would like to have my Mac's life back asap.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • Is my ibook dead?

recently i started to get the message appear that says my start up disk was full.
i purchased a external hard drive so i could remove files from my ibook but when i finally got round to it something bad happened.
my ibook stalled and wouldn't responed and all i could do is turn it off.
now when i start it up the grey screen with the apple logo appears then changes to the blue background.
the display just stays blue and nothing else happens.
    any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Possibly by the time you got around to being ready to remove your files, the hard drive just got so full it couldn't work any more. Do you have access to another Mac--maybe a friend with a Mac? If so, you could use their Mac to access your hard drive and see if your files can be rescued. Rescuing your data needs to be your first priority. You need to do this before you do anything else.
Do you have your original gray discs that came with the computer? If so, one thing to do is to boot off of install disc #1 and navigate to Disk Utility. Choose the brand name of your hard drive and go to First Aid. Verify and repair if necessary both permissions and the disk.
At some point you will probably have to reinstall your OS, possibly with an erase and install. This is why you need to rescue your data first, as this will destroy all the data on your hard drive. It may be possible to do an archive and install using your external hard drive. But it's always best to not rely on the archive feature alone if your computer is acting up.
It may be that one of the more experienced members of the forum will know a way to get your desktop back and start shifting files, but I don't know how to do this or even if it is possible. I also don't know if your data has been corrupted due to the full hard drive, but it could well be. There are ways to recover it, but I am not personally familiar with how to do it.
But try to get your data saved first. Please post back if you need more help with this.
    Good luck!

  • Help! My BlackBerry is dead!

    Hi All,
    My first post...
I have had my BlackBerry Z10 now for about 3 months second hand from someone. Last night, I was texting someone, and went back to the main screen, I cliked on "WhatsApp" and it wasen't opening, however it was achknowledging that I had clikced on it... I decided to hold down the power button to restart it, it was in the middle of restarting, and was stuck on the BlackBerry logo for a good 15 minutes, so I decided to pull out the battery... BIG mistake, the BlackBerry is now completely dead, no sign of life unless:
If I plug in the charger with the battery out, the red light comes on for 1 second then off.
If the battery is in and the charger, if I hold down the power button, after 10 seconds the red light will flash red for half a second
I'm having a feeling I've screwed up the software.
    Any help would be appreciated?
    Regards,
    Jason

  • I need help badly with my ibook and palm pilot

Good day. I recently fixed my ibook and my palm to sync with each other. I configured my palm to sync with entourage. I then realized that it would be much better that if I sync my palm pilot with the palm desktop. Gow do I now reverse this? How do i cancel entourage to sync with my pal pilot. please advise. need help badly on this. thanks... i just like to feep my files organized and i find it difficult using entourage...my palm pilot is a palm TX...

I also have a Palm handheld. I use iCal and Address Book more than Entourage. This is what I did:
At first, I tried to adapt to Palm Desktop. I didn't like it, so I looked for the *iSync Conduit*. I found it and installed it. Then, I ignored the Palm desktop software (except the HotSync utility) and have used iSync with iCal and Address Book since.
I know that doesn't answer the question about switching from Entourage, but Desktop isn't that great either. iSync is what I recommend.

  • Strangest screenshot ever. Please help decipher on my iBook G4 Mac 10.4.11

When I tried to install a new hard drive on my iBook G4, I got this crazy image. When I then tried to boot up from the 10.4 DVD, I got the same image. Please help me identify what the heck it is and why I'm getting it. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks. Randy

I had a similar occurrence recently when I booted from a G4 cloned drive on my G5, and I'd not had a Wireless mouse ever installed on either.
I think it happens when it doesn't find a USB Mouse or the ABD/USB Trackpad right off.
I think I fixed mine by unplugging/pluggin the USB Mouse, but there may have been other steps that I've forgotten.

  • Help my macbook pro is dead

    hello guys plz help me
my macbook pro is not booting at all when i pluged in the charge the charge led lighting green and when i press on battery indecator light its flashing for 5 seconds is my mac dead ? or its the battery ?
i have unpluged the batter and pressed 10 , 5 , 30 seconds the power button and re pluged in the power its still lighting green only and the mac wont boot wont start its dead
what is the problem ? if the charger light still on green and the batter light flashing 5 seconds when i clicked it ?

Your machine came with a 1 year manufacturers warranty, so no it is not covered by the original 1 year warranty unless you purchased AppleCare. AppleCare extends the warranty to 3 years from the original date of purchase so if you have AppleCare you may have some time left on it. You can go to this site and it will tell you what if any warranty is remaining.
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
If you are not covered by any warranty you will need to take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and they can repair it for you.

  • Help :( I think my ibook crashed!

I purchased my ibook g4 MAYBE in late April or early May. I didn't have any problems with it until earlier this month. My internet constantly started freezing, and a couple of days before it crashed, the finder would freeze when I clicked on it. I haven't dropped my ibook, kicked it, or anything else. I tried to take it to the apple store and the woman told me "Sorry, we can't do anything for you." She literally said that. I do NOT have the protection plan (and i'm wishing I did waste my money on it) but I know there's a 1-year warranty invovlved. I can't imagine why it would crash if I didn't do anything to it.
Oh, I don't know if it crashed completely, but I turn it on..and it gets to the load screen, where it says "Loading Mac OS X" and then freezes (even though it shows progress)
Needless to say, i'm incredibly p issed off because I can't find my apple reboot CD, and I don't even know if I for sure got one.
I am incredibly upset about this, so if somebody could help me, PLEASE DO SO.

it's hard to do much without system CD.
you can verify warranty by serial number at "About Your Support Coverage" (lower right):
    http://www.apple.com/support/
if you bought iBook from authorized dealer, 1 year warranty applies from the date of purchase.
if the issues is corrupted software, warranty may not be covering it (warranty covers parts failure)
all machines come with the system disks, if you bought it new it's supposed to have the disks.
without system CD you may want to try "single user mode" and running fsck command, it is possible that it could make things worse though if the drive is damaged.

  • Help with opening up iBook to replace HD

    Hi all,
I purchased an iBook G3 500/15GB/128MB (late 2001) on eBay a couple of months ago. Although I have an iMac I use as my main computer, I thought it worthwhile upgrading the HD & RAM of the iBook (as well as installing an AirPort card) just to make it a bit more useful. I could see that replacing the HD might be tricky, but as I already managed to replace the HD & RAM of my G3 iMac I thought this would not be too difficult with the right instructions.
Yesterday, I finally got around to beginning "the operation" with all my tools ready & both the PBFixIt.com guide & the Apple service manual open on my iMac. I have managed to remove the lower case without too much drama, but I am now stuck on the screws on the upper case. They all seem to be so tightly screwed in! - well most of them, I managed to remove about 4 so far. I keep trying them from time to time whenever I am home, with no luck.
Can some of you more seasoned iBook upgraders/repairers give me some tips? Even just suggestions for good screwdrivers, if that seemed to make a difference... Having got this far I'd hate to give up now...
    Thanks in advance!
    iBook G3 500 (Late 2001)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thanks to both of you for your encouragement. Ronda guessed right, I was using a rather cheap'n'nasty #0 screwdriver plus a $2 set of precision tools. I paid a visit to a more specialised electronics store this afternoon & invested in an insulated screwdriver (I don't need the 1000 volts protection, but the rubber handle was a lot easier to grip) and also "Screwdriver Helper", a liquid that looks like drops of a nail file and apparently helps to increase the torque of screwdrivers.
Armed with my new tools I was able to get off one nasty screw that had frustrated me for about an hour in just a few seconds... and so on with most of the others. Despite all this, I actually managed to grind out the head of one of the crucial screws on the top case, under the keyboard, and it looked like there was nothing I could do to get it out... :-/
If you are faint-hearted when it comes to opening up computers you might not want to read further...
I could prise up enough of the corner of the top case & shield to see where the hard drive was. So, I managed to unscrew & untape the shield in that corner & lift out & unplug the HD with the top case precariously pried up. What can I say, I'm stubborn & I hate getting other people in to fix something I feel I should be able to do myself. Anyway, to my surprise I was able to slide in the old HD & plug in the new one with less difficulty than I expected (but it would have been much, much easier if I'd had the whole top case off entirely instead of having to prise it open.)
I put it all back together a lot easier than getting it apart, thanks to keeping my screws organised. I think I may have to have another go at getting the bottom case on better - I couldn't get the two long torx screws under the feet to go back in straight, so I left them off, and it's slightly out of alignment with the top case round the back where the display hinge is. But it's late & I really wanted to see whether the whole thing was still actually working or not...
I was very anxious when I plugged in the power cable & pressed the power button! But pleasantly surprised when the iBook booted from the external firewire HD with no problems, & once I logged in Finder complained that it couldn't recognise the 74.5 GB disk I'd "inserted" - the new HD.
Of course, time will tell whether or not I was completely successful. But right now Carbon Copy Cloner is copying all my old HD's contents over with no apparent problems...
