Help! Is my hardware insufficient?!

I'm the Corporate Trainer for a tile company with about 130 employees.  My background is sales and tile-related knowledge instead of anything with computers.  However, I am fairly adept at electronics and have learned a LOT lately (thank you Lynda.com).
I am currently using Camtasia 8.0.2 for all screen capture-related training.  I have an old version of Premier Pro CS3 from when we did some training videos back in 2007 and am trying to convince my boss to upgrade to CS6 as well as get me a HPE h8-1360t quad-core.
The laptop I was supplied with in March I believe is not ideal/adepquate for the type of audio/video editing I will be doing.  I don't seem to have many issues with the simple screen capture related videos but when I do recordings from a camcorder and import high resolution pictures the system can get very choppy and render times for videos take FOREVER and sometimes lock up my system.
Any feedback on whether I can make what I have work or whether I need to upgrade and if so with what would be hugely appreciated.
HP Probook 6550b
Intel Core i3 CPU - 2.40GHz
4gb RAM (upgraded from 2gb recently hoping it would speed things up)
32-bit operating system
Thanks for any help or input you can provide!
Andrew

>Are you an employee?
Nope, my label is member, same as yours
I do not use a laptop, so may only suggest you read the 1st link I posted
But, based on reading a LOT of messages, I will say...
The i3 is "barely" enough CPU to edit SD (Standard Definition) video... for HD you need an i7 (again, click the 1st link I provided, and all the other links inside that message)
If your current laptop is "average" for the breed (ie-not specifically designed for video editing) it has one hard drive, and that hard drive is 5400rpm
You need a minimum of 2 hard drives, and your data drive needs to be 7200rpm
Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the
orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do
Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct
the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with
your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another
very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software
on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down
by trying to do everything
Also, Partition = Crash http://forums.adobe.com/thread/957286

  • Need urgent help with HSDIO hardware timing

    Hi everyone,
I need urgent help regarding HSDIO hardware timing. I've been working in a project which generating serial ramp using HSDIO pxie device.
I'm using clock rate 40MHz and generating 14 bit of boolean for each step of ramp. And I have to generate simply 256 steps ramp.
    Which means, 256 (steps) x 14 (boolean array) x 25 ns (period of 1 boolean value) = 89,6 ns.
What I'm doing right now is with using index of FOR loop as my input data (converting the index into 14bit boolean), then write into pxie device in every iteration,
which means, my data is getting into output in every 1ms time, right? (I'm using windows)
And I want to be able to generate faster than that.
How can I prewrite my 256 steps ramp, then write them all at once into pxie device. I'm really stuck here.
In the picture can you see how I do the write into device in every iteration of FOR Loop.
    Regards,
    Yan.

    hi, thanks for responding.
with using example of dynamic generation with script, I can manage to generate the ramp with controllable delay (generate the whole waveform, including delay with script command, then write to the card).
But I still have 1 question, I can test the output of the generation using oscilloscope and cant see the start delay (I'm writing delay at the start, before generating the ramp). My signal generated at 0 sec.
How can I check this start delay? is there any good example delivered with Labview to check this generation? Somehow I cant use the "dynamic generation and acquisition" example to see my generation (cant figure out how to capture the generated signal).
    regards,
    Yan.

  • Need help choosing optimal hardware for a laptop that will run AE CS5

    BACKGROUND INFO (Questions listed below)
I need some help figuring out the best hardware configuration for a new laptop. I’m a student at a design school and I will be using the laptop to mainly run After Effects and to a lesser extent Photoshop and Illustrator. I don’t need to worry about 3D rendering software or Premier Pro. I am primarily interested in getting the best performance during editing. I am not looking for the best performance for final output. I would prefer to sacrifice final output times for better editing/interface performance.
I will be working with standard definition content and perhaps HD up to 720p on occasion. I do not need to operate in resolutions higher than 720p. My projects are generally animation and use many sources and many layers.
I’ve been reading up on optimal hardware configurations for CS5 but my understanding is still a little foggy and I would like to use this thread to figure out how to build the best machine for my budget. The budget is about $1400 to $1600 CANADIAN after tax.
I DON’T need help finding the laptop. I will search for it on my own. I just need to understand the best hardware to purchase within my budget.
I realize that it is probably impossible to buy the laptop I want with the hardware configuration I need “off the shelf”. Instead I will be looking for a good base model (~$900-$1100) and I will purchase the necessary hardware upgrades separately. I will not be purchasing a Mac.
Right now I’m thinking of a machine built something like this:
    - 15”-16” screen (17” models are too big/heavy)
    - Mid to high end i5 processor OR entry level i7 quad core
    - 8GB RAM (I would go to 12GB, but it’s hard to find a 15”-16” laptop with 3 memory slots)
    - SSD to replace HDD (However, if possible, I would like a laptop with dual HDD support or swap the optical drive for another HDD. If I had access to 2 drives, I would have and HDD/SSD combo).
    - Medium/high end NVIDIA GPU to take advantage of OpenGL while editing.
    QUESTIONS
    1) Does the “Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously” option enhance general editing performance (applying filters, scrubbing through the timeline, reverting history states)? Or does it ONLY help speed up RAM previews and final output? Does it reduce the length of RAM previews?
1b) Is this option even necessary to enable on 64bit systems? (As far as I understand it was used to solve a problem where 32bit systems/software would only recognize 4GB of RAM per instance of AE).
1c) If I turn this option on to help with RAM previews, would I be hindering general editing performance in any way? Or does this option have basically zero drawbacks?
    2) How come “Actual CPUs that will be used” will read 0 even if the sum total of RAM assigned to the CPUs plus the RAM reserved for other applications is less than the total available system RAM (on a 64bit system)? For example, I currently have 4GB RAM and 2 installed CPUs. I have 1.5GB reserved for other programs and when I set 0.75GB per CPU both CPUs are used. However when I set 1GB per CPU then 0 CPUs are used, even though the total RAM adds up to only 3.5GB.
    CPU
3.) Considering the fact that I am more concerned with smooth performance while editing rather than final output speeds, would it be better to get a dual core i5 clocked around 2.5 or a quad core i7 clocked around 1.8?
4.) What is the difference between an i3 and an i5 processor even if they are clocked at the same speed? How does an i5 460M compare on the grand scheme of things?
    RAM
6.) Should the quantity of RAM that I get (8GB vs 12GB) be based on the number of cores in my CPU? If so, how should I be calculating optimal RAM based on # of cores. Should I also be counting threads, or just actual physical cores?
    STORAGE/SWAP
7.) Should I replace the HDD with an SSD? I'm looking for snappy interface performance while editing. I would think that if the RAM fills up it would be best to have the SSD for scratch/cache.
8.) What performance benchmarks are most important when considering an SSD for After Effects? (4k writes? IOs per second? Max read/write?)
9.) I can afford the OCZ Vertex2 120GB SSD. Would this be a good choice if an SSD is recommended?
10.) Would it be better to have 8GB of RAM and an SSD, or 12GB of RAM and an HDD? Explain why.
    GPU
10.) After Effects utilizes OpenGL to enhance editing performance. I will not really be using Premier Pro, so catering to the CUDA Mercury Engine is not a concern. Do high end gaming cards provide significant gains in OpenGL performance? Or do OpenGL performance gains taper off around the mid-range GPUs? (i.e. can you justify buying a high end GTX 260M graphics card for enhanced editing performance versus an "entry level" dedicated card like the 310M?)
11.) What hardware specs are most important when considering a GPU for editing performance in AE? (Memory size? # of Pixel shaders? Core speed? Shader speed?)
Thanks so much for any answers you can offer to these questions.

Please make sure that you've read through this page and what it points to.
    > 1) Does the “Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously” option
enhance general editing performance (applying filters, scrubbing through
the timeline, reverting history states)? Or does it ONLY help speed up
RAM previews and final output? Does it reduce the length of RAM
    previews?
It only increases rendering speed for RAM previews and rendering for final output. In After Effects CS5, it doesn't decrease the length of RAM previews. (In CS4, it does.)
1b) Is this option even necessary to enable on 64bit
systems? (As far as I understand it was used to solve a problem where
32bit systems/software would only recognize 4GB of RAM per instance of
    AE).
You misunderstood. Yes, it's still relevant on 64-bit computers. Moreso, in a way. (I'd rather not spend my entire Sunday writing out detailed answers to satisfy idle curiosity, so I'm not going to give all the technical detail to that answer.)
    > 1c) If I turn this option on to help with RAM previews,
would I be hindering general editing performance in any way? Or does
this option have basically zero drawbacks?
It takes a small but nonzero time for the background processes to start up when they need to be used and shut down when they're done. And as they sit waiting, they take up a little bit of memory. So, it's not exactly correct to say that there are no downsides to leaving it on. But it's close. I leave it on.
    > 2) How come “Actual CPUs that will be used” will read 0 even
if the sum total of RAM assigned to the CPUs plus the RAM reserved for
other applications is less than the total available system RAM (on a

CPU both CPUs are used. However when I set 1GB per CPU then 0 CPUs are
used, even though the total RAM adds up to only 3.5GB.
4GB - 1.5GB for other software leaves 2.5 GB for After Effects.
If you have 1GB assigned per background CPU, then the foreground takes 1.2x that = 1.2GB. That leaves 1.3GB for background processes, which is enough for one background process. There's no point in starting only one background process to do rendering, so it doesn't bother. (Note: When background processes are rendering, the foreground process isn't rendering.)
    > 3.) Considering the fact that I am more concerned with
smooth performance while editing rather than final output speeds, would
it be better to get a dual core i5 clocked around 2.5 or a quad core i7
    clocked around 1.8?
Get the quad-core. That gives you a greater total number of cycles. And After Effects works very well with mutliple processors, even beyond Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing. An entirely unrelated sort of multiprocessing (multithreading) spreads work out to multiple processors.
    > 6.) Should the quantity of RAM that I get (8GB vs 12GB) be based on the number of cores in my CPU? If
so, how should I be calculating optimal RAM based on # of cores. Should
I also be counting threads, or just actual physical cores?
The optimum amount is the amount that you can cram into the computer. I'm not kidding. Spend your budget on RAM until you have 4GB installed per processor (and I'm counting the virtual processors due to hyperthreading). If you have a quad-core, that's 8 CPUs with hyperthreading, so the optimum amount of RAM installed is 32GB. You can work with less, but you did ask about optimum. For HD work (i.e., 1920 pixels across), you're OK with more like 3GB installed per CPU. That's what I have at home: 24GB in a quad-core. You're going to assign 2/3 or so of the RAM to After Effects, so 3GB installed per CPU is 2GB per core for HD work in After Effects.
    > 10.) Would it be better to have 8GB of RAM and an SSD, or 12GB of RAM and an HDD? Explain why.
12GB of RAM. Because After Effects likes RAM. (If you're thinking of deliberatly using virtual memory to swap memory to the hard disk, don't. That's a performance killer.)
    > 10.) After Effects utilizes OpenGL to enhance editing performance.
Not really. If you're on a limited budget, don't even think about the GPU until you've already got the most RAM, the fastest CPUs, the largest number of CPUs, two fast hard disks, and a couple of good monitors. Then, and only then, should you even consider getting soemthing beyond a non-stock graphics card. Yes, OpenGL can be used to accelerate some things, but that's only for the low-fidelity preview renderer. (Pardon the bluntness, but I want to make sure that you heed this.)

  • Please help identify Unknown hardware

Can someone please help me to identify a peice of hardware. On The front it says Digital Data Storage, there is the number 3 as well and underneath it says model # 611. I know its a type of storage device but i cant find any documentation. If someone could help i would be very grateful
    Many thanks

It is a DDS3 tape drive in a type 611 chassis shell.
If I recall correctly, that chassis shell is also referred to as a Unipak.
You could use if for making backups of your filesystems.
It will be a Single-Ended SCSI device, so you'd need a SCSI adapter card to make it work.
The mechanical components of the tape drive were actually from HP.
(there are only two or three tape drive manufacturers, who make them for everyone)
Each DDS3 tape cartridge can hold approximately 12GB of information; more if file compression software is used.
I cannot give you links to Sun references for that entire assembly,
access to that portion of the SSH requires a service contract,
but <u>this link is for the drive mechanism</u>, itself.

    Hi.
You should provide more information about you storage.
    How many disks ?
What connections present on back side of array ?
What information provided on disks ?

  • Exchange Requirements & Installation Help Advice on Hardware Which i have

    Dear All,
    Greetings !!!
I would like you to help me regarding this.
I want to learn exchange server 2013 or 2010, To learn that and to setup a small home lab i have purchased the following.
I need your expert advice whether i have the right thing to learn or is there any other things to buy and how to start?
    Hardware requirements i have.
Server requirements: Rackable server Refurbished, Intel s5000PSL Motherboard, Intel Xeon Quad Core dual Processor, 12GB Memory, 300GB HDD,
ADSL connectivity: 4Mbps Unlimited Internet Connectivity for my daily internet activities. I dont have static ip as this s very expensive in oman.
Domain Name: I have purchased one domain and it is active.
    Below are my questions:
    1. I have installed windows 2012 datacenter edition in server.
    2. I am planning to install windows server 2008 r2 as a virtual machine in that server and trying to configure AD and exchange in that virtual machine. ( Please advice me on this is it possible)
    3. Because i dont have static IP, is it possible to configure exchange server and run it? What are the alternative?
    4. Domain name is enough ? is there anything is required related to this? Please advice Iam confused regarding this.
    5. Internet connectivity 4 MBps line is sufficient?
    6. How mails will get routed thru my exchange and what all required to setup home exchange server for my domain name?
    7. what all software's i require to run efficiently this exchange server and licenses require to purchase?
    8. Please guide me how to manage?
Please help me to setup home exchange server and this will help me to increase my exchange server knowledge
I thank you all in advance
    Thanks
    Tony

    2. That should be possible.
    3. You can configure Exchange and run it, but you may have trouble sending and receiving e-mail.  Sending, you're probably going to have to send through your ISP's SMTP server; you should ask them about that, and you'll need to configure your SPF record
to correctly reflect that.  For inbound mail you're probably going to need to purchase a dynamic DNS service.
    4. Enough for what?
    5. It depends on how much mail you send and how many clients connect over that link.  And whatever else you do with it.
    6. You're asking me to explain how to set up an Exchange server?  Sorry, I don't have enough time for that.  Buy a good book and start reading TechNet.
    7. You'll need Exchange Server and CALs.  But be aware that nobody on this list is authorized to quote licensing terms on behalf of Microsoft.  Check out their licensing page or talk to your Microsoft representative or reseller.
    8. See #6.

  • Looking for help on what Hardware to use for FCS

I am looking to set up a shared storage for use in a small editing network and I am having a hard time getting my head around what exactly I need.
I have 4 edit stations that currently run externals. I am looking at a solution like FCS to centralize all the captures and media to edit from. We usually edit Apple Pro res and DV footage.
My understanding is that we need to connect to the storage using Fibre to get the bandwidth needed. My issue is wondering exactly how much hardware I need to get this done and what the layout of this hardware should be.
I currently have a Mac Pro that could be dedicated as the server running FCS. I plan on buying a Fibre connected storage RAID and outfitting the 4 Mac Pros in the office with Fibre cards. I am guessing I need to connect all of this with a Fibre switch. Is this all I would need? Would I be able to capture and edit off of the RAID using this configuration? What else would I need?
I have been looking for diagrams or some type of examples of configurations people have use and not been able to find much. Any advice would be great
    Thanks

XServe, Promise RAID, QLogic Sanbox 20 port fiber switch, XSAN software, 5 Mac Pro Fiber cards.
That's pretty good, assuming you have the numbers right. You need Xsan software and a Fibre Channel card for every computer connecting via FC (the Xserves and Mac Pros). Note that the 20 port switch has 16 usable ports, and each storage or computing device should connect to two ports, so you've basically filled it up with what you've listed.
I also have an XServe that is on the (10 GB ethernet) network (in another building on campus) that is currently being used as a login/account manager (could it be used for metadata as well?).
It would be good to use this as the failover MDC to support the one you are purchasing. Can you relocate it so it is physically closer? It should be Intel. It is not recommended to have the primary MDC perform directory or other services, but some people do this (at a slight risk) on a secondary server.
Will I need to reduce one of the Mac Pro editors to merely a metadata controller (leaving me with 4 editors)?
Not recommended, except maybe as a backup.
Can I use the existing network for the LAN and METADATA Switches?
You'll need a separate network for metadata traffic. This can be physical or virtual (on higher-end switches).
@trezero-your list is the first I've seen with 3 XServes. Is this just because of FCServer? Can you not use the MDC or one of the networked editors?
FCServer warrants its own machine since it is fairly CPU intensive, especially if you are doing transcoding on it. In high performance environments people will add a second machine just to do rendering.
Don't put any other server process on the MDC. You could use the backup MDC for FCSvr, but this isn't recommended since if it gets failed over to, then it is no longer the backup, and you're again risking your Xsan integrity on a shared system. In an educational lab setup where the risk of downtime is not an inconvenience, you could probably get away with it.
You would probably benefit from either taking the Xsan class or working with a professional systems integrator. I'm based in the Southeast and can refer you to a few people if you contact me offline.

  • Where is apple support for iCloud.  All online help asks for hardware number.  iCloud does NOT have a hardwdare number

Are there live people to help with iCloud?  Or is Apple too cheap to have phone support or iClouds after taking your money on a product that does not do as promised: play music you put on the cloud should be accessed across several devices.  Nada on iPhone, nada on brand new PC with Windows 7.  Nada to any Apple support unless I pay more money.
Used to buy exclusive Apple products.  Won't any more and I know why lots of others won't now.  Expensive and difficult to get real, live help once money is spend.  Before you put down money, Apple is ALL sales:  we'll help you, there is lots of Apple Support, we have Geniuses that will teach you, blah, blah, blah.

Agreed... we can only hope that they're using happily pounding away numbers on that on-screen keyboard

  • HELP - Clueless BWA hardware partner - can't install pre-sales system

    Hi dear BWA fellows,
am posting this on behalf of Hewlett-Packard ... we're trying to pilot BWA and BO Explorer and to my surprise we did not yet fully pass away just yet when hearing about the price tag.
But we just might - if the mandated hardware "partner" for the proprietary hardware infrastructure doesn't manage to install a small trial environment within the next few weeks ...
Rescue us from flatlining in the emergency room of BI marketing nirvana ... please assist HP Asia-Pacific to simply install a base BW image onto one or two HP blades ...
Thanks in advance (also on behalf of SAP who are not allowed to install the trial system because of the installation guide they wrote).
    Andre.

    Hi Andre,
any update? How did this play out?

  • PLEASE HELP FAST :dbms_sql.parse, insufficient privileges

    DBMS_SQL.PARSE statement
When Executed from a call within a package, I get the message insufficient privileges.
I tried executing it from the user-schema from the owner and from an other user.
When executed from within a sql-statement there is no problem.
    Example:
    DECLARE
    p_sql_cursor number;
    sql_statement varchar2(1000) := ;
    BEGIN
    sql_cursor := dbms_sql.open_cursor;
    dbms_sql.parse(p_sql_cursor, sql_statement, 1);
    END;
    This is not a problem.
Does anyone know if this has something to do with access rights/grants.
If so, please tell me what access rights/grants I need to execute this statement succesfully from within a package
If not please let me know what you think is the problem and how I can fix it.
    Thanks in advance,
please mail me, i don't know if i have time to check te discussion board

  • Help needed- Check hardware with java

    Hi everyone:)
I'm working on a colledge project and i need to know if anybody knows a way to check hardware's capabilities using java, i.e. i want to use java to check if a machine can play a sound clip, or has enough free space, etc...
Can someone please point me some clues on how to get there (prefeberably using J2ME)?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pedro

Download the SAP Java connector (JCo).
