Help!! Is my modem possessed?

I have a 1-yr old iMac G5 with an internal modem. I use a dial-up internet connection in a rural area with ancient phone lines. After a storm last week, my modem (I think) seems to have taken on a life of its own and interferes with our phone service (we have only 1 line). Most of the time, if the phone line is connected, we have no dial tone, even if the computer is off. Once I unplug it, dial tone returns. I can usually connect to my ISP, but if I disconnect, I will have no dial tone until I unplug the line. If I disconnect, then try to reconnect, I will get a error message that no dial tone is detected.
Phone company said there was a short in the jack where the computer is plugged in, but I think that was because the computer was actually plugged in at the time. A phone plugged in to that jack will work fine. I had the same problems when I plugged the computer into the test jack outside the house. I feel like we have tried everything and the problem keeps pointing to the modem, but I don't know/understand why. I would really appreciate any help that anyone can give.
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hello,
I would suspect that the modem itself is partially damaged. I've seen this with bad modems before. It's possible for a damaged modem to hold the lines (due to a short) even when the computer is off.
Often people will neglect to protect the phone lines leading to their computer, and that is a major potential problem.
As you likely know, you should be using your computer with a high-quality surge protector to prevent power surges from damaging the computer.
But, most people completely overlook the other connections. The simple fact, is that anything connected to your computer can pass a power surge to the computer.
So, if your printer is not on your surge protector, and it is connected to your computer, then a power surge could hit the printer and then travel through the cord to the computer. That surge could then pass through the circuitry in the computer and damage whatever it happens to hit.
The same is true of your telephone line. Your telephone line should also be run through a surge protector before going to your computer. Failure to do that means that you might as well not even provide power protection to your computer.
Basically, anything you have connected to your computer should be connected to a high-quality surge protector. Even phone lines, ethernet lines, and whatever else.
Many high-quality surge-protectors include a jack to connect your phone line through that will provide protection.
I use both a modem and Ethernet / DSL. So, I have both my phone line and my Ethernet cables going through a surge protector before reaching my computer.
I actually have it doubled-up. My phone line is run through a surge protector right at the point it enters the house. Then, from the surge protector, it goes to my phone jacks. So, every phone jack is protected.
Likewise, my DSL line is connected after the surge protector, so it's protected as well.
Then, before each computer, I have a surge protector on the phone and Ethernet jack leading to the computer.
It may sound like a lot of trouble. But, if you leave one point of entry into your computer unprotected, then you could have the entire machine damaged by a surge that enters through that weak spot.
So, protecting it important.
In your case, you sound fortunate to have only had the modem damaged. A surge could have passed through the modem and gotten the rest of the computer.
So, first thing I would do is get your computer and everything else that touches it on a good high-quality surge protector. And, also the phone line.
Since the modem is damaged already, there isn't much you can do about it (it's built-in / non-replaceable).
But, you can restore functionality by purchasing Apple's USB modem. It's about $49.
You could plug that into your USB port and then use it to connect to the Internet. Unfortunately, USB modems sometimes have a less reliable connection to the Internet. But, I think that's your only option at this point.
If you took your computer to the service center to repair the modem, they would just want to replace the entire logic-board. And, that's about $700 (or more). And, it's not warranty related since the damage would have been caused by an electrical storm.
I hope this helps.

  • HELP! Virgin modem in UK - fails to talk to Time Capsule

My previous Virgin modem (Scientific Atlanta) was connected to my Airport Time Capsule and worked perfectly well.
Virgin sent me a new modem (just better performance I understand) recently. I did say to them that I'd heard there were some problems with this new modem and the Macs, but I was assured there were no issues....why did I believe them??
They have registered the new MAC address for the new modem (that activates it) and the new modem itself is working fine (Virgin's modem, but says it is made by Ambit) and if I connect this old 10.4.11 MacBook Pro, I can get online and look for a solution (no luck so far) and create this post.
The Time Capsule (version 7.4.1) is also working fine and sending out the signal, but the two don't appear to be talking to each other!?
The Network Diagnostics report shows the three top Airport signals/settings as Green positive dots, but the ISP and internet connections below that are Red dots.
When the Airport Utility window comes up (saying it has a problem) and I run through each page to try and remedy, I get to a stage where it states:
"The Apple wireless device doesn't have any DNS server addresses and might have trouble connecting to the internet."
But there are two spaces below and one does have a DNS address in there (10.0.1.1).
But if I click continue, the problem doesn't appear to have been resolved and it justs asks me to restart the modem... I do but it makes no difference and it's just a repetetive cycle after that!
I need my computer online to work, so I am really stuck now. Virgin wipe their hands of this under the basis they do not support 3rd party routers... thanks a lot Virgin!!
So any help on this would be v.much appreciated - thanks Mac people!

Hi Duane - thanks for taking the time to post.
Yes, I powered off the modem every time and even did them in sequence, i.e. switched on the modem first, waited till it powered up fully, then powered up Time Capsule and then the MacPro.
If switch from my laptop to my daughter's laptop (both Macs) using the ethernet cable, I have to restart the modem as it just doesn't connect. So I know your comment is correct.
I wonder if it would work if I reset the TC (factory settings) and then try and connect the modem again? As I'm sure it's something to do with the settings on TC - would I manually need to input a DNS setting as it's requesting?

  • Wrt54g help with 2wire modem

I have AT&T DSL and the modem is a 2Wire.  I have a Linksys router downline from the modem and has been working fine until I lost power the other day.  Now the linksys can't see the internet.  All the laptops in my house say they are connect to the linksys, but the linksys can't get past the 2wire.  Help please.

Before you got the router, how did you get online on the 2wire? Did you need a username/password or were you online right away?
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • Help!! Modem/Com Port

Okay, I recently built my first PC and it has been running well, that is until I tried last night to get online.
I doubt it's a massive problem but I'm stumped. I'd really, really appreciate some help on this one.
    I have a K7N2 Delta-ILSR, and I'm trying to run a Creative Modem Blaster V.92 PCI modem.
Right now my PC says it's on slot 5.
Anyway, whenever I try to connect to the net, via AOL (sucks I know, but I get it free where I live), the thing just doesn't dial. I think maybe it's a com port problem, but I know nothing about them. I bought the modem OEM, so no manual. It's showing up on Com Port 3, and the PC says ports 1 and 2 are 'In Use', though I don't know what with.
I initially had it on another PCI slot, installed it with the CD which came with it. And I had the problem. I moved it to where it is now, and before reinstalling with the CD the modem would dial, but was only recognised as a Generic modem. It also wouldn't talk with the network. So I reinstalled with the CD, and then I was back to square one.
    Any ideas?
    Here's my set-up:
    K7N2 Delta-ILSR
    Win XP Home
    Athlon XP 2500+ (no o/c)
    2x 256 PC3200 Corsair RAM
    Radeon 9500Pro
Please some help would really be appreciated.

    Hi,
Dial up modems can be a bitch to install (don't ask me why!). Try this: Power down and remove your Modem card then uninstall any drivers you've installed for it. Reboot then re-install the modem driver software (I assume you have drivers) then power down again and replace the modem card. Hopefully when you boot XP should detect your hardware and then install the drivers you've installed!
Also turn PNP OS off in the BIOS, and make sure APIC is enabled.

  • Help on fax modem

can nokia 9210i be used as a fax modem to send and receive faxS from your pc or laptop i have tried weeks on end to achieve this but it only dails as data call and not as a fax caLL
    need helps
    thanks all

    1) installing the modem,
    Plug it in
    2) setting up the modem
If you want to use it for connecting to dial-up you would do this in Network Preferences, where you would enter the number, username and password, but I guess this isn't what you want to do as you have Airport.
    3) configuration of software that drives the modem, cover sheets etc.
To send a fax, choose 'Fax PDF' from the Print dialog. You set up the telephone number and whether you want a cover sheet there.
    4) If I need to deactivate my Airport before using it
    Not to send a fax
    5) How to connect my cell by Bluetooth or tether to send/receive Faxes
I'll have to pass on that, I don't have a clever mobile phone. You might like to post it again as a separate question.
But I have sent several faxes and never found a prompt that says they made it or failed.
You don't get any progress report faxing this way.
If you are going to do a lot of faxing you might like to look at PageSender which offers many more features.

  • Help - PowerBook 520c modem not recognised

I recently resurrected an old PowerBook 520c from my back shed. I was on the verge of binning it but tried installing some software for it. Could not find the original 7.6 disks it came with. But managed to find a Performa 7.5.1 CD which by SCSSI was able to connect it to my LC630.
To keep this post short the PowerBook boots up fine but I think i am missing something vital for it to "see" the modem. Just out of curiosity I tried dialling in to my ISP but no luckk. "Serial port is used by another application" or something along those lines.
I downloaded MacPPP on my current PowerBook G4 in the hope of "kick starting" the modem .
I vaguely using Config PPP in the old days. What do I need to tell the PowerBook there is a modem in there and that it isn'[t really a Performa. Do I need to download Global modem software. If so, any ideas where I may get it from.
    Thanks anyone.
    Cheers from Oz

JoeYou feel that i should get hold of the OS specific for the PowerBook, huh.Not quite. PBs 5x0 can run Systems/OSs from 7.1.1 to 8.1, but the latter requires the full complement of RAM (36MB) to run 8.0/8.1 elegantly. I don't know of a PB 5x0-specific CD, so your need is for a 'full install' set of floppies or a 'retail' CD. Just be prepared for the fact that the 7.5.3 download is 19 floppies. (Guess why CD-ROM was 'in' thereafter.) If you can attach a SCSI CD-ROM to your PB, using a CD (say one of OS 7.6.1, or 7.5.5, which do exist) will save your hair.
Unless your internal modem is far out, installation of a new OS will provide a new modem CCL (script) for whatever modem is in the PB. You need to know who the modem's maker is so that you can choose the relevant modem in Modem control panel.
The aforementioned AAUI port on the back is Apple's guess at the time, before there was an agreed ethernet port standard. The AAUI/RJ-45 adapter will bridge from the PB's AAUI port to a standard Cat5e ethernet patch (or a crossover) cable.
The way i have been getting CD roms thru to the PowerBook has been by SCSI the Performa with CD to the PowerBook. This sounds like SCSI disk mode, which, for all the reasons mentioned above, is NBG for the purpose of System/OS installation onto the PB.
For some reason the PowerBook won't SCSI with my external CD Rom which I used to use all the time in the mid 90s with my 475!Ah! That's because the PB is an older PowerBook. Very genteel. Very stylish. And utterly maddening. It has a compact HDI-30 SCSI port, not the DB-25 port used by desktops. It needs either a special HDI-30 (with only 29 pins and a light grey jacket) to CN-50 adapter, or a switchable 30/29-pin adapter and conventional peripheral CN-50/CN-50 cable, to connect successfully to the CD-ROM. Hold fast to the idea that it can be done (I use it often). There must also be a pass-through terminator between the CD-ROM and the PB. Fortunately, the CD-ROM, if it is one of Apple's, will supply termination power to the daisy-chain, and be terminated on the remote side.
The explanation takes longer than the setup does when you have the gear. There is more about this process in one of the previous posts if you need it.

  • Connecting Help using Cable Modem

I am trying to connect to the internet using a cable modem. It works fine on my PC but when I try to plug it in to my Macbook, I can't connect. First off I figured I could just plug it in and hit connect, or it would connect automatically. Because the whole reason I got a mac was because of the "easy-ness" surrounding them. So can anyone guide me to somehow connect.

The problem likely is not your Mac but your cable modem.
Most cable modems, for some unknown reason, lock themselves to the first device they see. This means that if your PC is the first device to use it, then only the PC can use it - it won't talk to the Mac at all.
The first solution is simple - power cycle the modem. This resets the lock so the Mac can use it (as long a the Mac is the first device), but then you have the same situation with the PC.
The better solution is to get a NAT router that can take the connection from the cable modem and share it between both Mac and PC simultaneously. As far as the cable modem is concerned, it only sees the router and the lock does not matter. Numerous vendors make numerous products that will fill this requirement.

  • Help, this phone is possessed!!!

I have had this phone since early December. I have kept it in great quality, keep a durable case and screen protector to keep it from breaking. I have never dropped it severely or ever had water damage. The other day my phone was being really slow, which I am pretty used to anyway. But I was going to check my text messages and I touched the pull down notification bar, and when I did it pulled it down and pulled it right back up without me touching it. And ever since it has pretty much just lagged horribly, and everything I try to command it to do it goes to the application, media, messages, internet, and then closes it without any warning in seconds. I can't check my messages, call anyone, and when I tried removing the battery and restarting it, it would flash the unlock screen multiple times for about five minutes, just flashing that menu. When I tried typing in my password it would stop typing and clear the whole bar for my password. When I eventually got it to turn back on, when I went to use the lock key it instead of locking my phone it would automatically type in mnn into the search bar and give me results for mnn. Half the time the touch pad doesn't work, or the keypad doesn't want to work. I have no idea where all these problems came from, I haven't dropped it, updated anything, nothing to agitate my phone... Should I just call TMobile for a replacement or is there something I can do to salvage my phone?
I have never really had a problem up to now, other than lagged, and the App store never wants to run or run my apps for that matter. But I love the look of the phone and the keyboard. I don't want to have to get another if I can avoid it, but its not even letting me communicate now. Please Help ):

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I recommend you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
When successful (it may take you some experimentation to get the key sequence correct), you should consider an OS reload, if you are that adventurous...here is a procedure:
At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for each model. Please use those as reference as you proceed.
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. You can even use a different carriers OS package by simply inserting, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML. Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:
KB19915How to perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software
Failing that, formal support from your carrier is certainly always an option.

  • Need help configuring 2wire modem to Linksys54G thru wds

I have a 2wire modem and want to feed my wrt54g router internet without an ethernet cable. I know that I have to set PPPoe, username & password but how do I assign it my ip addy?

    You have several options:
    1)  You might be able to find third party firmware, such as dd-wrt, to convert your WRT54G  to a "wireless range expander"  (i.e. repeater).
    2)  You could buy a WRE54G wireless range expander (i.e. repeater).   The specs say it works with wireless g, but I am uncertain if it will work with your 2wire.
Note: Using a repeater (solution 1 or 2) will cut your wireless bandwidth in half.  This is because the repeater must split its 54 Mbps bandwidth, half to receive and half to re-transmit.
    3)  You can connect the modem and WRT54G together by using two PLE200 devices.  PLE200 devices connect together by sending signals through your home electrical wiring.  Your setup would look like this:
    modem --- PLE200 ===== PLE200 --- WRT54G
Note:  PLE200 do not like to be on power strips.  They prefer to be plugged directly into a wall socket.  Electric curcuit breaker boxes usually have two columns of switches, one on the right side and one on the left side.  The two PLE200 devices should be connected to sockets that are wired to the same side of the electric box.

  • Please help - Faulty openreach modem but BT India ...

    Hi,
After having recently been upgraded to Infinity 2, my connection went intermittent and then off completely last week. I called BT India who said the fault was not at my end and that I should give it 24-48 hours for the problem to be resolved. After a couple of days, still no connection.
I am aware that early openreach modems have a reliability issue as this modem is my second (the original died after a couple of months and was replaced by an engineer who had done four that morning). I got a letter about a swap out last November but never heard anything more after that, so the modem I am using is not a new one. The modem is wall mounted under my desk. So, after 48 hours of no connection, last week I placed a fan under the desk next to the modem to blow cool air at it. Within a minute or two I had a connection again. Switch off the fan, give it a few minutes and the connection is dropped again.
I then rang BT India again (got a woman called Romy) and tried to explain to her that the problem was my modem. She just said it was "very strange" and had no knowledge of the reliability issues of these early modems. She said she would have a replacement sent to me and I got her to confirm that it was an "openreach modem" that she was ordering.
I've just been away in Belgium for 4 days and returned today (Monday) to find a missed delivery card (which looks like it was from earlier this morning) and a letter from BT. The letter says we're sorry that your "BT home hub 3.0 black" is not working and that I'll get my replacement soon! Arrrrrgghhh! I don't even use the hub 3 I've got as I have a DLink DIR-825 router of my own!
Do BT India actually know what an openreach modem for BT infinity is? It appears not from my experience.
So, if somebody on here from BT UK could kindly assist in getting me a new modem either by post or sending an engineer round to do a swap out (and advising me of what to do with the home hub 3 I'm about to receive) then I would be extremely grateful.
    Thanks,
    Ade.

    Update.
BT India have now rung me back, different member of their call team, wanting to know if my system was working.
After explaining again to him, he straight away said "I'll send an engineer out tomorrow, morning or afternoon?"
Wish they had taken that option when I called last week.
I'll ping the hub back in the returns bag when it arrives (with a note attached saying it's not a dud), then hopefully I won't get charged for that.

  • Won't connect to internet, help please

I am back in my apartment at school and they replaced the cable with just another one, almost the same thing, but the problem is that when i connect the cable straight to my CPU it works fine, but when i plug the cable into my airport express it just blinks amber and it shows the connection and even says i am connected but it won't connect to the internet, please help me. my brother will be here tomorrow and i need to get this wireless setup. thanks so much for the help.

Connect the modem to your Airport Express. Then pull power to both for at least five minutes. Then plug power into the modem and wait a minute. Then plug power into the Airport Express and wait a minute. Then try internet access again.
