HELP! Is my 'new' CPU failing me and causing KP's?
I hope I can make this as succinct as it needs to be. I have a MacPro 1,1, and have maxed out my RAM (2 ys ago) with 16GB Crucial RAM, and recently swapped my twin-dual-core processors for a pair of Xeon X5355's. I also had an issue where on of the wires on the lower Molex connector to the lower Super Drive arced, taking out both SD's. Rather than chase down that issue, I went to an external USB-connected SuperDrive. I'm also running OSX 10.6.8, and have run both Cocktail and Disk Utility to chase down an issue which has only just appeared.
The most recent 'mod' was swapping the CPU cores two weeks back, followed a week ago by adding the external Super Drive. Since that, when I've come back to my computer after a break, the computer is running, but the screens are dark and won't come back to life. I have to manually shut down and restart the system to get it running again. This has happened three times now; I ran both Cocktail and DU before the last Kernel Panic.
I'm no spark-chaser; I had an IT buddy of mine do the CPU swap for me, as I'm disabled anyway. From what I can understand, does the information below mean the cause of the KP's causing the "shutdown" described earlier is one or both of the CPU's? According to what I can read elsewhere, they're both operating just fine....I'm hoping it might just be something simple, like a firmware fix or something that one of a simple mind (moi) can wrap his elderly head around. (If it is the CPU's, I guess that's what happens with used CPUs...)
Anyway, if you can answer me here, I'd be more than grateful and indebted.

This is getting confusinger and confusinger...I've had to reset my password 3 times and "like" the answer to reply...that doesn't seem right. Oh, well. An update:
In an effort to isolate the problem without SB, I looked through my Preferences and noticed my discs turned off after several hours. I set all controls to 'never'. Also (and just to complicate things), I suspended my ongoing DVD recordings overnight; I figured between the two, one of them would trigger it.
No problems this morning! I'm thinking the KP occurred when the discs shut down (and therefore wouldn't re-awake when I moved the mouse or hit a key). The only other possibility I can wrap my head around is the DVD recorder is taking so long (Toast 10 Titanium) that it might've triggered the KP, as I'd routinely leave the computer while it was burning a disc (I do a lot of this for my wife's classes - she's a high school & college teacher). Next I will try to burn a disk and see if nothing happens---surely, the fault must lie between the two, no?
Heck, the only other solution is to sacrifice my Petroliana collection or my '68 Impala (no motor) in order to buy a new MP....which I don't WANT to do.... Anyway, thanks for helping walk me though this...I'll most definitely keep y'all updated as and when anything new happens.

I was wondering how I would go about adding a new CPU to my laptop. I've never done anything like this before and I was wondering how I would go about doing it. Also, I have yet to actually buy a new CPU so if you have any suggestions, or if there are any compatibity issues I should know about it would be great if you could tell me.
In your case I wont exchange the CPU.
This is not really significant because the price for a new CPU is high and you will not get much more performance.
The BIOS does often not work with the CPU and Toshiba doesnt support such service.

I need some help.... I Have the iPhone 4S and downloaded the new software (6.0) and everything seems great so far except when I try to open a link in safari from a different app (ie..messages, Facebook, ect..) it glitches and won't load. The blue loading bar will just jump back and forth and the page will not load properly if at all....
It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:

If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

I am getting a message that my iphoto library cannot be opened because I mades changes to my photos in a newer version of iphoto and I need to quit and use the newest version of iPhoto. but in update, it says i have no updates. i dont even remember making changes in iphoto.Help. thanks.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

ok...i'm not sure how at all...but, a couple hours have passed since i posted this and while i was hoping someone would reply i was finishing up some old work on my old, extremely slow emac. anyways, i decided to go ahead and try to install leopard again from the normal standard method. (which is just clicking the icon once the leopard install window comes up). Guess what? now it's 50% into the installation!! i don't want to count my chickens before they hatch...especially after some of the discussions i've read about leopard so far...but, i'm hopeful
who knows how...i'm clueless and it doesn't make much sense to me. but, i'll come back and let anyone who cares know how the install went.
note for anyone with similar problems:
another strange fix to the 'leopard dvd ejecting on install' is to let the dvd chill in the drive for a couple hours...then try it again. HAHAHAHAHA!!!! worked for me -

My computer went crazy yesterday on two occasions involving PDF documents. One dealt with attachments to an email from a bona fide corporation. The other dealt with IRS PDF forms & schedules needed for today's submission.
As both dealt with PDF and had nothing else in common, I suspected my PC had a virus. When I asked a local store technician, he agreed. I turned to Norton, which protects my PC from viruses, and after a few hours of really thorough searching, the computer was found to have no viruses.
Before describing what I call "crazy" computer behavior, you need to know that I have long had IE8 as my default browser but a few weeks ago switched to Mozilla Firefox because IE8 had beome incompatible with some websites from which I get information.
When I received the email from AT&T email service and clicked the first of four icons representing attachments, there was figuratively an explosion on my monitor: a series of new tabs, each called New Tab, burst onto the monitor--but no text or picture. The new tabs appeared faster than I coul kill them. I finally decided just to shut down the computer, hoping they would not reappear when I restarted. I was wrong. After 2 repeats, I decided to forget about the attachments and asked the sender to send them to me by regular mail.
That was no solution for my IRS PDFs. I wanted to complete filling in the various forms and schedules that I had begun months ago so that I could mail them today to the IRS (without having to copy them all in ink). When I tried to open the first one, BOOM. The same thing happened: the blizzard of New Tabs atop blank pages; my IRS form or schedule did not show up. Did the same shutdown/restart routine with the same results.
When I looked at the list of current forms that had to be completed, I noticed something very strange: the icons that began the listing of the documents' names were replaced one by one by Mozilla icons. When I moused over them, they said Firefox HTML. Why?
Starting the day today, I had the same experience. What's more, when I started to retrieve 2012 IRS PDFs from a year ago, the same New Tab tabs appeared and had to be killed, and Mozilla icons replaced whatever icon was there before.
Assuming that the problem arose with Adobe Reader's reading of the PDFs, I contacted Adobe but got no helpful phone number because PDFs are a free service and was directed to use this Forum to get help.
What do I have to do to (a) read and use PDFs in the normal way and (b) remove the Mozilla icon from those that have appeared on icon documents. If Mozilla is the source of the problem, shall I go back to IE8? (In my 80s, I want eventually to replace my old computer but for the time being I must continue using it. It will not take an IE9. Anther possible default browser would be Google Chrome, but I have unfavorable impressions of it because of its intrusiveness, loading my PC with stuff I do not need.
Can you help?The problem is absolutely not Reader. The problem is that FireFox has stepped in front of Reader and handles all the PDF stuff - wrongly in your case. FireFox is DESIGNED to take over PDF files. But it is not capable of doing IRS forms!
To start with go back to IE for these forms. When you save them to disk DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK ON THEM until this is fixed. Just open the in the normal way - start Adobe Reader and use Open from the File menu. -

The screen you're seeing on your iPhone indicates it is in recovery mode. Now since the device is not appearing in iTunes on your PC, first follow the steps in this article:

I uploaded that new IOS 8.0 and now I cannot open my mail, Safari, or the new "TIPS" app. Does Apple have some sort of help, other than going to a store that is over 40 miles away?

I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever. Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever. -

Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup. However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails. And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external. Sort of a catch 22. Any ideas?
Is it a USB hard drive? USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice. Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem. If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time. I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.
