Help, it feels slooow: Mac Mini 2012 2.3 Quad Core 1TB 4GB

Hi, I already posted this on another forum but I haven't got any feedback yet, I hope I'm luckier here :-)
I'm a long time Mac user. Last week I bought a new Mac Mini 2.3 i7 1Tb Quad Core.
Now, having left the OS X platform years ago when my good old G5 started feeling pretty old for more modern systems and programs, and having used a cheap basic Asus notebook in the meantime, I was really expecting the Mac Mini to fly. Well, to be honest I'm quite puzzled right now: it just feels it's lagging so often, that it doesn't feel that different to my 10 year old G5 running 10.5.
Things like opening System Preferences take an awful long time, often just going to the upper menu and clicking on things I get the dreadful spinning ball, switching between tabs in a browser, and in general the machine (especially considering it's basically new, I didn't even install anything serious on it yet, like Logic Pro, etc) feels definitely not responsive enough for a 2012 quad core.
I know, no SSD and still only the stock 4gb of Ram, but tell me this can't be true. I did some quick check with Disk First Aid and everything looks ok, I fixed permissions too.
I unchecked the "put hd to sleep when possible", but no improvement. I tried also a safe boot, but that didn't tell me much. Of course the machine feels a tad snappier, but it's hard to compare.
I was also surprised to see how slow and laggy Photoshop CS 6 felt even just working on pretty small images, (I'm just trying a 30 days demo), I mean, we're talking of a Quad Core. It's funny 'cause I was expecting it to be day and night to my G5 and that crappy notebook of a few years ago, and it doesn't feel like that. I know, apples and oranges, but still...
So these days I've just used things like Chrome (terribly RAM hungry, I know), Spotify, Open Office here and there, Text Wrangler, things like these...
Oh, the machine came with 10.8.3, now I'm on 10.9, but to be honest I didn't experience significant differences (actually I updated hoping it would have solved the problem).
So, before I return this Mac Mini, please tell me about your real life experiences with a similar configuration, and give me any advice you may have. I'd be really grateful, I don't want to end up buying another PC :-)

Wow, that has me worried as I've been waiting for the new mini. It seems nuts to me that any mac ships with 4Gb RAM these days!
I would recommend that you get at least 8Gb of RAM into your mini ASAP. If you go to the Activity Monitor app you can look for "Page outs" or "Swap Used" and that will show if your mac is having to transfer data from your RAM to your HDD - seriously slowing down the machine. With just 4Gb and Adobe CS your mac is probably doing a lot of it and really struggling. If you have the cash then an SSD will be awesome but to me, RAM is the priority - and you can do it yourself easily.
Just to highlight the differences, here's the effect of different upgrades for me, hopefully that will help with your decision
I have a mid 2010 13" MBP and it shipped with 4Gb / 250Gb 5400rpm HDD.
I updated the memory to 8Gb in 2011/2 and put in a WD Black 7200rpm HDD. That was a massive improvement that could easily be seen when using a different MBP in the original specs (my boss bought 2 so I could see them side by side). Startup was improved by a good margin but apps - especially multiple apps open - were much happier and zippy. I could have all my apps open whereas my boss had to close anything he wasn't using.
About 2 months ago I added a 120Gb SSD from OWC and the difference is massive again. The machine knocked 45 seconds off the boot time and opening/saving/closing apps and files are almost instant, even on the old sata bus. It doesn't affect how many apps I can have open, it just does anything disk related a whole lot quicker.

  • Is the mac mini server the same hardware as the other mac minis (except for the quad core i7 and dual hard drives) with different software or is it configured differently?

I have a mac mini with an i7 dual core processor. It is perceptably slower than my macbook pro with a quad core i7. Does the mac mini server have the same hardware configuation as the regular mac mini with server software or is the hardware different (aside from the i7 quad core and dual hard drives)? I want a mini with a quad core i7...

Your assumption is correct.  The server does however only
have the Intel HD3000 graphics like the base model with
no option, at this time, for the discrete graphics chip.  So,
depending on what you are using it for, that could be a deal
breaker.  Remember that your MBP does have a discrete
    graphics chip.
I have a 2011 Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt display
that gets used as an engineering workstation and general
personal use (some photo editing, LP restoraton, general
internet browsing).  You simply just not enable any of the
server services.  I find the combination to work quite well
for my purposes.  I also have a 13" 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro
which is pretty much strictly for work.  As far as CPU
power it is pretty much equivelent to your Mini.  For the most
part I find the Mini does outperfom my MBP.  I heavily use
Parallels and Windows7 virtual machines, so the more cores
    the better.
So, If you do a lot of CPU intensive stuff that is multithreaded,
the Server may help.  If it is graphics intensive and your software
heavily leaverages the GPU, you may actually take a hit on
    performance.

  • 2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini 2.66 Quad Core i7 ?

2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini Server 2.66 Quad Core i7 ? I have a choice between these two for running Final Cut Pro X. Price is nearly the same.
The Mac Pro has a ePCI 512 display adapter, 16 GB RAM, more hard drive expansion and faster 1tb 7200 rpm conventional hard drive. FW 800.
The Mini Server has two 1 tb 5400 rpm conventional drives, 16 GB RAM and an integrated display adapter. Has thunderbolt and FW 800.
My primary concern is the performance of the processors. Does anyone happen to know how they compare in video editing?

This may give you some ideas.
There are some folks on this forum who report very saticfactory results editing on Minis.
Perhaps they will chime in with first hand experience (which I can't give).

  • How to get two vga monitors on a mac mini 2012

    Hi Guys,
please forgive any ignorance that follows. I am a new convert from a PC and have bought a Mac Mini 2012. I want to be able to use a monitor that I can see my music programme but run a second monitor that will allow me to display visuals from a VJ programme. Here is my journey.
I bought the mac mini and the thunderbolt to vga adapter. Generic VGA monitor - worked a treat. I then wanted to run a second generic vga monitor form the hdmi port. After a lot research I chose an adapter for £15 that one of the reviews said worked perfectly for a mac mini and VGA. Bought it form Amazon. Didn't work - no signal etc - refund. Then I thought I would buy a monitor / DVD with a HDMI cable and do hdmi to hdmi and use that as the music monitor and use the thunderbolt port for the projector and VJ programme. Bought one from Asda. Plugged in great picture etc worked a treat but got a ground hum from new HDMI monitor. More research and realised that ground hum was a nightmare. HDMI monitor back and refund.
It is doing my head in.
I will be a happier man if someone could say that they have a mac mini 2012 and they bought this HDMI VGA converter and use a generic vga monitor and it works a treat. There is only so much stuff I can return before my lick runs out.
    I don't think I'm asking for much.
Any help would be gratefully received.
    Cheers Pete

Sorry, but I can not safely suggest a digital HDMI to analog VGA converter or if any would even work with the Mac Mini because I do not have and have not personally tested any.
I can only suggest that instead of dropping more money into adapters or an HDMI to VGA converter, that perhaps' you should consider replacing one if not both with a more modern digital monitor that support either HDMI and/or DVI.

  • Mac Mini 2012 incredibly slow

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to fix a Mac Mini (late 2012 model) for a familymember. He bought a used Mac Mini and it looks good on the outside, but something seems to be wrong inside. Now, I'm great with computers but relatively new to Apple hardware, and so I turn to all of you for some help.
    The symptoms:
    - Mac Mini loads everything insanely slow. It's like a handicapped snail.
    - Very random boottimes, sometimes it boots in 40 seconds, sometimes it takes 5+ minutes.
    What I've tried:
    - Checked the harddrive with the Disk Utility. The test returns no problems. The SMART status is also listed as verified.
    - Ran a speedtest on the harddrive to see if its performance is below expectations. Results were around 100MB/s sec write and read speed.
    - Ran the Apple Hardware Test: no problems detected.
    - Formatting the harddrive and reinstalling OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion. Faced lots of problems during installation, had to start over three times (confirms it as a hardware issue for me).
Now, I'm thinking the harddrive is dying but all the tests show it's just fine. Any suggestions?

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • OS X 10.9.2 on Mac Mini 2012 reboots randomly

Hi everybody, I have a Mac Mini 2012 2.3ghz model. I bought with Mountain Lion and everything was very very good. I updated to Mavericks from ML and, a little bit slow, but, I knew it, I needed update since zero. So, I did it, and, since that day, I have a lot of reboots randomly. One day, I had as 4 or 5 reboots in 2 or 3 hours. I mean, ***!!!. Sometimes that passed when I close Safari with a lot of tabs. Sometimes when I eject an USB or HDD. It's so randomly.
I've done repair permissions and pass it Ccleaner. The Mac is still rebooting. I have the last report. I hope you can help me. Thank you very much!.

  • HT204291 Apple TV 3rd generation. Bad image when mirroring second user's desktop from Mac mini 2012

    Hello All,
There are Mac Mini 2012 with OS X 10.8.2 and Apple TV 3rd G with 5.2 (6010.96). There are 2 users on the Mac.
The problem is when I start Mac Mini and log on with one user I am able to mirror the desktop. When I switch to another user and try to mirrow the desktop, I see bad image (image full of green artifacts) with good sound.
One user is admin. It does not matter which user is sharing the screen first. It is always the second one that will not be able to mirror the screen till Mac Mini is rebooted.
At the same time if I try to airplay something from iPhone or iPad, it goes well.
Please help to solve the problem.
    Kind Regards,
    Kirill

With update to OS X Mavericks the problem is gone

  • Is it right to mix sizes of memory modules in a mac mini 2012? for example 2Gb 8Gb?

Is it right to mix sizes of memory modules in a mac mini 2012? for example 2Gb 8Gb?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can do that without any problem, always that the total amount of memory is less than the maximum memory your Mac mini supports. A Late 2012 Mac mini supports 16 GB of memory, and you can find in this site the steps to install more memory > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4432?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#1

I would like to use my iMac 7,1 as a monitor for my Mac mini 2012. Is that possible and if yes, what type of cable connection do I need? Thank you.

No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on Mac Mini 2012

    Hello!
I've a new Mac Mini and I'd like to run it on Snow Leopard. Is it possible to install 10.6.8 on Mac Mini 2012?

Only if you install it in a virtual machine under Parallels or VMware, and then only with some hacking.

  • Cable to migrate from Macbook (late 2007) to Mac Mini 2012?

What cable should I use to migrate files from Macbook (late 2007) to Mac Mini 2012. The ethernet migration took 30 hours. The Macbook messaged success but the Mini did not show that any files were transfered.

Where did you look for the migrated files? Look in the /Users/ folder and see if there isn't a new user account. If so, then log into that account where you should find what you migrated.
The only way to do a migration any faster and more reliably is if both computers have Firewire ports. If they do then you can use Target Disk Mode to migrate.

  • Dual-screen with Mac mini 2012 ?

    Hi,
I'd like to set-up a dual-screen on a Mac mini (2012), is it possible to use 2 HDMI monitors (1 to the HDMI output and the other to the Thunderbolt output with a HDMI adapter) ?
    Thanks,
    Sylvain

Yes, that's perfectly doable. that's the way mine are set up.

  • Can I still use Appleworks 6.2.9 with Mac Mini 2012?

Can I still use Appleworks 6.2.9 with Mac Mini 2012?

Yes, MlchaelLAX, the KVM switch allow one to use one monitor, one keyboard, and one mouse between two computers.  It has been so long that I'm not sure how to find the MODELS to the G4 and G5. Unless you mean what makes the Mac tick.  The G5 is a dual 2GHz PowerPC, with 2 GB DDR SDRAM.  The G4 is a bit slower, will look tomorrow.
I want/need a newer Mac model because unlike the days before OS X, all software was included as the newer OS were added, not so today.  I'm still using Tiger because I still use a couple programs from the old days.  When I eventually purchase a new model, I will have to buy all new software.  That's find if one has plenty of money and wants to learn everything from scratch, but I'm hanging on as long as I can.
I tried TenFourFox, but it didn't allow video, of course since I tried Michael's suggestion, the video might not be an issue.  So far, every thing works the way it should.
I have a lot of faith in Mac users, their loyalties to Apple is what kept Apple floating when many thought it would sink.  These folks are survivors; I only wish the apple people on the top appreciated that loyalty today, but I guess things are too good.
Thanks to all for you kindness.  Tomorrow I will show my husband how to remove his yellow threat on his G4.  If anyone can answer any other questions, please know I will keep viewing this post.

  • Best monitor for mac mini 2012

I have bought the mac mini 2012 model and a samsung monitor SyncMaster s22B370. The text is looking blurry. You can look at this thread. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4497508?start=75&tstart=0. So I decided to buy another monitor. Can you please suggest a monitor which is working well for you.

I use a Dell Ultra Sharp connected with a Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter. This is the best setup for the least cost out there.
