HELP - iTunes 9. Library on external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

OK. I've done a search and found similar questions, but no real answer to my problem, so here goes:
I've got all my media contained on an external drive connected via usb to my airport extreme. My problem is that iTunes continually (95% of the time) redirects itself back to default folder on my iBook. The external drive is always on, so I'm not sure why iTunes seems to redirect itself. I have noticed that when I search out my external drive through Finder, there is a slight lag before the file list comes up? Could this be the iTunes issue? (it's trying to connect, but the lag throws it off, so it thinks the folder isn't there and creates a new one?)
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Final follow up: Sorry this took so long, but better late than never. So, I figured out why there was an issue with the "login item" solution....multiple accounts. It seems that one of the accounts wasn't properly login onto the Airport Express (and ultimately the external drive). This was bringing up an error message, but I wasn't seeing it (as it was showing up under the other account). Once I took care of the login issue on the other account, all was well. So, to sum it up, the best solution to this problem seems to be setting the external drive as a login item. Thanks again. The help was much appreciated.

  • Smart folder not searching external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

I have bunch of movie files (mp4 format) on external HDD connected to the new Airport Extreme station. When I create a smart folder on either one of the machines on my local network, the smart folder would not search at all through the HDD connected to the Airport Extreme.
I have another HDD connected directly to my PowerMacG5Quad and smart folders successfuly searches through that drive.
However, when I ask for any type of search (i.e. any kind of files) located on a networked external HDD, smart folders acts is if the networked drive is not even there.
Obviously, my purpose here is to have the difference machines access (RSS style) all the movies files located on the networked HDD.
Is it some permission in Airport Extreme?

  • Access USB external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

    Hi.
Today I configured "Back to my Mac" and I'm having a little issue with the external HDD that is connected to the Airport.
Let me explain the configuration: Airport Extreme (latest version) configured with Back to My Mac option, with an external HDD connected using USB port (The HDD is externanly powered). iMac computer with OSX Mavericks wireless connected, configured with iCloud Account and Back to My Mac with screen sharing).
I can access the shared screen and control the iMac from my Macbook Air outside my home network.
The issue is when I try to access the "network HDD" because I can connect using the right user but Finder windows never shows the HDD content. I have to disconect and reconnect to the external HDD to be able to see the files (If I have 3 windows and want to access the HDD on each of the 3 windows, I have to disconnect and reconnect 3 times).
    Question:
There is any way to access the external HDD and be able to see its content using the configuration mentioned? The disconnect and reconnect procedure for each window is normal? There is a better configuration I can apply?. Just as information, from my MacBook Im able to see perfect the HDD content from outside my home network.
I know the question is a little bit confusing, but if you need any additional info please let me know.
    Thank you.

  • Moving iTunes Lib over to external hd connected to airport extreme and listening

Hey hows it goin everyone. I know there are a ton of topics already about this topic but I didnt want to go through all of them and I really just want a solution to this so I can get underway. My music collection is very important to me and can not afford to lose it all. I have a western digital hd connected to my airport extreme that I use to back up wirelessly. I want to take my 180 gigs of music and put it on my external and then be able to play/stream it though my itunes library while I am on my home network. Im not sure what to do. I have tried moving my itunes to my external and then changing the file location to the external but it never seems to work. I would really appreciate it someone could help me out step by step wise. Would be really helpful if someone wanted to sign on skype or ichat and talk me through it. Thanks again guys and girls.

Ok so I did exactly what you said. When I go to and play a sony on itunes and I click the get info button is still shows that the file is located under my user and not the external hd. Anyone know where I go from here. Like I said and ichat or skype would be awesome so we dont have to keep going back and forth. I am stumped on this one. Can anyone please help?

  • Can you search an external hdd connected via airport extreme

I have my western digital 500gb harddrive connected to my airport extreme so I can use my HD wirelessly. I tried searching for files in my wireless harddrive through finder, but it doesn't seem to search it, only on my macbook itself. Is it possible to search the harddrive wirelessly?

    Smokerz,
    could you explain??
I spent over an hour with Apple Tech support and they said that Finder/Spotlight WILL NOT search a networked drive. However, I did find a bit of a work around:
    1. In Finder Preferences: General - Select check box - 'Always open folders in new window'
    2. Open up a Finder window
    3. Select Airport Extreme. (Left column, Shared, name of Airport base station)
    4. Select networked drive
    5. Double Click a folder in your network drive that you want to search (this opens new window)
    6. In the new window, type what you need in the search window (upper right hand corner).
Remember: The Finder window will default to the 'This Mac' in the search column (light grey line below the Toolbar)
    7. In the Search column, This Mac and Contents are selected in Dark Grey. You should see
Search: *This Mac* "folder name" Shared | Contents File Name
    8. Now select "folder name". This will search the contents of the selected folder and bypass your Mac.
If there is an easier way, could you please explain. TIA
    Narvon
PS - If you try to select your networked drive in a new window as in step 5, this still won't work. You can only select specific folders within the drive. Lastly, you can move all your folders and files to 1 folder, however, this increases the search time (My network drive is 320GB in size and a search for 1 known file took just over 3 minutes).

  • Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled)

Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled).
Does only certain branch of HDD can be connected to aireport extreme?
I collect some information and i knew i have to partiion the HDD into Mac OS extended (journaled),
and i did so. Still the usb HDD cannot be found.
The other question is, can i partition the HDD into two sections, one of it is Mac OS extended(journaled) while the other is Fat32?
I want to share Fat32 section with another PC with windows system.
Thanks a lot if you have any suggestions.

I had tried to set up the connection via usinb a powered usb hub as the bridge between external HDD and the airport extreme. i still cannot found the HDD in the "airport utilities".
    This is my setting.
    1. Set airport extreme  as "sharing-single-ip" mode. The wireless network functions correctly.
    2. Connect external HDD to MBA. Partition it into single-partition with Mac OS extended (journaled).
    3. The HDD can be found if i plugged it directly to my MBA.
    4. Connect a powered usb hub to airport extreme.
    5. Connect external HDD to the powered usb hub.
    6. Open airport utilities.
         a. Select "airport extreme" in the sidebar.
         b. Change the "Disks" sheet.
    7. Cannot find an external Disk
    Is there any problem here?
Please help me. Thanks a lot!!

  • I have my Time Machine on an external drive (not connected to Airport Extreme) and I have an external HD attached to airport extreme. Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme. How?

I have my Time Machine on an external drive (not connected to Airport Extreme) and I have an external HD attached to airport extreme. Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme. How?

Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme.
    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

  • Stopped see files on external HD connected to airport extreme.

I have connected a 3TB external HD to my Airport Extreme.  I have been able to use and access all the files over the network through finder without any issues.  Recently I stopped being able to see the files in finder.  I can still see the dirve and the main folder but that is it and I cannot see the file structure or individual files.  This also has my iTunes files and Itunes can still connect to the file locations.  Or I can say show in Finder and it will show by but still will not show other files.  If I connect the HD directly to the computer then I can see all the files no problem.  Thoughts?

    OK...Here is where things stand:
I am logged in as the administrator on my Computer
When I connect the drive directly, do the Get info, I have read & write permissions
When connecting over wifi the Permissions say, "You have Custom access"
If I seach for an iTunes file that I know is on the remote HDD it plays
I can show this same file in finder and see the file structure
But I if try and open the structure top down, it won;t show access
Through Airport Utility I Have access and can see the extrenal drive and folder is shared.
Should "Back to Mac" be enabled?  I am not sure what other knobs to turn at this point.

  • Time Machine clueless about external HD connected to Airport Extreme

This is not my first post about HD connected to Airport Extreme. Just came back from Apple store. Spoke to Geniuses there in tech support desk and they are clueless.
Here is situation: have 7 Macs in the house connected to Airport Extreme wirelessly. In that respect things are working fine. Last week I purchased brand new WD My Book external HD and connected it to Airport Extreme using USB (it also has Fire Wire but that is not a point here).
As per forum advices I re-formated drive using disk utility to Mac Extended journaled, GUID. here is result:
iMAC x 3, with Tiger - see, mount and use My Book easily, shows on desktop as mounted drive
MacBook Pro w. Tiger - same as above, back up every day to My Book
MacBook with Leopard x 2 - no My Book on desktop, Time Machine doesn't see it
Mac Mini with Leopard - same as above, no trace of My Book, Time Machine doesn't see it
    * This problem evolved from me having regular 160 GB FAT32 HD connected to Airport Extreme. Again Tiger machines were using that drive every day no sweat.
    * Then I decided to upgrade all Macs to Leopard for one single reason only - Time Machine. (Good that I didn't do it but rather decided to introduce new, bigger and better USB drive first).
    * Western Digital My Book is being sold in Apple stores as "drive that is recognized by Time Machine" so I bought 1TB unit.
    * All Macs and Airport Extreme are up to date.
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance,
    Zack

I cannot tell you why your Apple Genius told you what he did, but he/she was dead wrong. Apple sells its Time Capsule product, so they are not interested in making the AEBS a product competitor.
I will give you a little secret for which you will forever be indebted to me.
Open your Terminal application in the Utilities folder and at the prompt enter or paste the following command pressing RETURN after:
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Miraculously your problem will be Solved.

  • Backing up iTunes library on USD HD connected to Airport Extreme

    Hi,
I am thinking about moving my iTunes library from my iMac to a USB hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme so that I can access it from my PowerBook without having to have the iMac powered on.
    Two questions:
    1. If I do this, can I configure Time Machine on my iMac to back up the library that is now located on the shared USB drive?
    2. If I share my library in this way, will I be able to add content from both the iMac and the PowerBook?
    Thanks

See my reply in your other thread.

  • External Drive connected to Airport Extreme, need Time Machine 3 Mac's Help

I own an Airport Extreme and just recently added two new Macs with the Time Machine feature to our household. I would like to use Time Machine to backup to my Airport Extreme that has a 500 GB hard drive connected. It seems Apple has this blocked since they have released the Time Capsule version of the router. Is there a work around this feature so I don't have to go out an purchase what I basically have already got? Please help. We would like to upgrade our older macs to Leopard and us the same system to back them up as well. Please advise. Thank you.

I had my USB drive on my APE working with Time Machine under 10.5.1 very reliably. A few days ago however, I needed to suspend a backup operation, and when I came back to restart it, time machine refused to mount the disk image on the drive. After several attempts to get it to connect with no luck I decided to delete the image (the sparce image file) and start over. Now TM refuses to create a new image.
BTW, on the Mac OSX hints site there have been suggestions to start a backup with the drive directly connected, then stop the backup, move the sparce image file to the root of the drive, reconnect the drive to the APE base station to get it working. I tried this again, but I think Apple has changed something in 10.5.2, because when directly connected TM no longer creates a sparce image file.
Anybody else seen this behavior after upgrading to 10.5.2?

  • How to Acess iPhoto Library in External Hard Drive thru Airport Extreme and iPad

My iPhoto library is currently in an external hard drive that's connected to an Airport Extreme.  I want to be able to access this library thru my iPad.  Is there any way to accomplish this?  I have spent endless hours online looking for an answer, but so far I have not found it.
Thank you so much for the help !!!

It may sound like a stretch, but there are so many people who have already solved more complex tasks than this one.
I can't believe the only solution to this problem is to use LogMeIn/GotoMyPC or other remote control applications to access the library thru my MacBook Pro.   There is also an app for iPhones called NetPortalFile and I can view the individual pictures (but it ***** because I can only see one at a time and my wife has 60,000 pics...).  Almost there with solutions, not integrated all yet that I know of and that's why I am asking.
I'll keep waiting, maybe someone has already figured it out or they are working on an app :)

  • External HDs connected to Airport Extreme and Imovie / Iphoto issues

I recently purchased a WD mac edition "my book" hardrive in order to store all my imovie, iphoto and itunes files externally. I connected the hard drive to my airport extreme base station but was unable to move my imovie files to the hard drive. Instead I received some derivation of the following message - "volume not compatible." After being transferred to a number of different people at apple support, I was finally told that the imovie, iphoto etc... are not compatible with hard drives that are connected wirelessly. I cannot believe that this is the case (presumably imovie files can be saved on timecapsule). I would be most grateful if someone could help me out here.

I was finally told that the imovie, iphoto etc... are not compatible with hard drives that are connected wirelessly. I cannot believe that this is the case
Nor can I. Files are files, some are bigger than others but to a hard disk, they're all the same.
I would presume that you don't get this message when connecting your My Book directly to the computer's USB port?
Apple Support simply couldn't have understood you correctly. I wouldn't expect to use iMovie or iPhoto to manipulate remotely stored files, but merely copying them for archival purposes is a completely legitimate use for the external HD.
This makes no sense. Perhaps you could post your question in an iLife forum.

  • Folder on External HD  connected to Airport Extreme shows no files

When I view my external hard drive on my airport extreme a folder called "music" shows "no items". However, I know there are several hundred folders inside the folder. In fact, when I plug the drive directly into my macbook pro, I can access all the folders. The permissions are set to read & write and I have access to all other folders on the drive via the airport extreme. This happened suddenly when I moved a munch of files into the folder. Until then I had full access at all times.
Does anyone know why this would happen?

    OK...Here is where things stand:

  • Problem mapping USB external drive connected to Airport Extreme on my PC

I am having a problem mapping my USB external drive in my PC running WIndows Vista.   Here is what I have so far:
USB External Drive connected to my AirPort Extreme which is connected to my Century Link modem/router.
I have installed the USB drive using the Airport Utility.  In the Disks section the Enable File Sharing is checked, Secure Shared Disks is set to With a Disk Password, I have entered the password in the next 2 rows, and finally AirPort Disks Gues Access is set to Not Allowed.  The section below named These Settings Configure Windows File Sharing is empty.  Am I supposed to put something here?
I was also told I need to map the drive in my PC, but when I go to do that via the Computer and the Map Network Drive, I get stuck where it asks me to enter a folder name.  I read many of the posts which tell me I need to enter among other things the disk's ip address, but I am unable to find it anywhere.  Where do I find what to put here?
Can someone please help this frustrated user?
