Help - iTunes Converting mp3s automatically into VBR - Low Bitrate?

Hi Forum Members: New kid on the block. I've been very lucky not to have too many problems with iTunes.
I just placed several mp3s into iTunes via the folders/file selection. For some unknown reason it converted all those mp3s into VBR mp3s with a lower bitrate.
There is nothing unusual about these mp3s. Their bitrate is mixed at around 196 kbps to 256 kpbs.
I didn't use Import or ask iTunes to convert?
Any clues as to what is going on? Or how to fix the problem.

My Preferences > Advanced Tab > mp3 encoder, good quality, 128 kbps
With iTunes changing the format to 114 kbps(VBR) at 44.100 KHz is quite close to the 128 kbps, however, it's rather odd that it would do it without asking (as you mentioned).
My idea was to keep the files at their existing kbps per second and then convert within iTunes using the "right-click" option.
I've also had problems with iTunes converting on import. If I take files/folder from my computer (not CD - already on system) and bring them into iTunes via the Import method (I've specified the importing size, etc.) it doesn't convert them to the specified encoding, e.g. m4a to mp3?? I end having to convert within iTunes (right-click).

im not going to change all my songs into AAC, I was experiementing around with making ringtones for my iphone. I can open a song in Garageband, and export it as an AAC file to my itunes, but it is very annoying. You can go here http://www.id3.org/ for a primer on id3 tags.
If the files are mp3's then there should be id3 tags as part of the file. If there is info such as Song Name, Artist, etc showing up in the iTunes main window then there is id3 tag info available for that file.
If the files are already in the mp3 format then use the "add" function (iTunes>File Menu>Add to Library). There is no need to rip using the import funtion.
Put your CD back in and drag a couple of files to the main iTunes window and see if the id3 tag info shows up. Dragging tunes to the main window will produce the same result as using the menu command.

The subject of the post and content of your post are asking two different questions.
As for the subject... does lowering the bitrate improve video playback?
It depends what you mean by improve. Lowering the bitrate might make the video run faster/smoother/less choppy but it will also lower the quality of the picture.
As for the message in your post... does loweing the bitrate give you more hours of video playback?
Probably, yes. The size of the video file will be smaller, so you can fit more content on the iPod. Smaller file sizes mean less work for the iPod hard drive, wich results in better battery life.

Help with Converting Already Imported Songs to Lower Quality

I just bought a new 2GB nano, and before I even thought about it, I just dragged and dropped my songs over to it. However, I had forgotten awhile back that I had upped the quality of my library to import at 320 kpbs. This was obvious after the fact because my estimated 500 song nano is saying its full at 294 songs. How do I convert my library to a lower AAC kpbs? I tried changing the import settings in the advanced menu, but the conversion process stops when it hits a song that I purchased from the iTunes Music Store. Any ideas?

Adam, did you change the import settings in ITunes Prefs > Advanced? If you left the settings at 320Kbps, then you've accomplished nothing. If you did change this setting then highlight Library, in the Source list, pull down Edit > View Options and click Bit Rate. Click the OK button then sort your Library by Bit Rate to find the new songs.

ITunes Converted MP3 Corrupt (Skips like record)

So I've been searching and I have not been able to find my specific issue out there. So here it is. Hope someone can help.
I purchased a new vehicle with a 30Gb HDD. Unfortunately, it doesn't play ACC so I have to convert my music to MP3. Not a big deal since it's a built in feature in iTunes. The problem I'm finding is that a lot (not all) of my songs will skip like a record player around the 3-3.5 minute mark. The song will still play to the end. it just has this annoying skip. Sometimes a song will also cut off the last few seconds.
When I play the same MP3 through iTunes, it will skip at the same point so this tells me there is something wrong with the conversion. The orignal purchased song is fine. I delete the MP3 song and reconvert and it seems to work. This is just a pain as I'm finding more and more songs that are corrupted. I also have not listened to all the reconverted songs yet so I'm not entirely sure reconverting will work every time.
Is there a setting that is causing this? Is there another conversion method that is more robust?

Hey, check this out I was playing around with a CD in Windows Media Player 11, I was wondering why this played so well and Itunes didn't I was going to download a cd in wma 11 and started looking around I noticed a box with said if you are having playback problems uncheck this box for 24 bit sound. so I did and swicthed back to itunes. so far no skipping. I will continue to monitor. So much for the tech experts at Apple & Microsoft

Converting mp3 audio to txt for Captivate 4 project

Hi,
I'm working on a Captivate 4 project for which audio was recorded as an mp3 file. The audio consists of talking points for a training session. Instead of editing and splicing this large file, I was hoping to convert it to a txt file, that I could then add as slide notes and use the text-to-speech converter in Captivate 4. Does anyone know of a tool that converts mp3 files into txt files?

I believe Adobe Soundbooth has that capability. You might also look at Dragon Naturally Speaking as well. I'm unaware of any free tools that will do it.

How to convert mp3 to m4r ringtone ?

hi all i have just purchased a small MP3 file to use as a ring tone, but, to be be able to use it on my iPhone i need to convert it to a m4r file
is it easy to do this WITHOUT purchasing special software ?
although, having just said WITHOUT purchasing special software !!, i just googled for the relevant FREE software and they ALL seem to be very dodgy !!!!!!

You can make ringtone using iTunes
Convert mp3 to AAC (you can also cut interesting part of the song using information page in file properties) and then rename file extension from m4a to m4r and reimport it to itunes and viola!

How Do I Convert A Large Windows MP3 Inventory Into A Large Itunes MP3 Inventory?

First timer here, so by way of introduction let me offer my sincere wishes that those who read this and their loved ones are just coming off a blessed holiday season.
I'm a new Itunes convert from WMP as of yesterday, and here's my problem:
I have an enourmous amount of music, already in MP3 format, already on my windows machine under C:/Username/MyMusic. My operating system is Windows Home Premium 7 SP 1.
My attempt to establish those music files as an Itunes library resulted in each of them (almost 40 days and 70 Gb worth, according to the bottom display bar of the Itunes library window) being converted into MPEGs as far as I can tell. I'm confused because the file path for each song under "Get Info" ends in the designation MP3, although the format field says it's an MPEG.
My attempt to resolve this using the "Select All" and "Convert to MP3" option resulted in everything being duplicated with the same designations as above, only with a different "Content Added" Date.
Did I get the import process right the first time and not realize it? Or, do they actually still need to be converted and I'm doing the wrong thing? If so, what do I need to do?
Lastly, once I've verified that the correctly formatted files are in it, could someone please share the simplest method of deleting duplicate files in the library? To the best of my knowledge at this point, even with using the "Date Added" column and sorting the list by album, I'll be unchecking boxes for days and would love a faster option.
No blog entry, article or message board post I've found yet has been of any help. Many of them are just plain out of date.

I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this thread for background.
That said you should probably start by "undoing" the creation of extra mp3s. If you sort the song list on the Date Added column you can select then first song from the relevant batch, then scroll to the end of the group, hold shift and click to select the range. You can then delete and send to the recycle bin.
My script won't be as effective against this group. The "Convert to format" tool may well specifiy a different bit rate from the source file, but it won't ever increase the quality of the audio. Clearly converting 128k mp3 to 256k mp3 would have no benefit so you want the original files.
If you still have duplicates use the script to thin out what remains.

Help with importing mp3s into iTunes

Hi, I'm running the newest version of iTunes and having problems loading mp3s into the library in correct order. I'm not sure how the mp3s i want to import are tagged, but when i import them, iTunes arranges them automatically by song name (alphabetically) and loses the track order.
1) how do i import them keeping the same track order (in future)?
2) how can i re-order the existing ones i've imported into the library already as efficiently as possible (without going into the 'get info' option and adding track numbers for each of the separate tracks (i have several thousand like this - they are mainly live concerts)?

You don’t say quite enough to be sure if I am being helpful or how much you know, but …
Start in the library window with browse on and select an album. (Click on the little eye, upper right of screen if you don’t see the browser).
You can then use “Get info” to inspect some of your imported tracks for that album. If you click on the info tab, you should see a field for track number. If you have a correct track number in this field, you should be able to sort by track number.
If you don’t see a Track # column to sort on, you and bring it into view by right clicking on the header row (Name, Artist, Album etc) and then checking Track number.
You can sort on any column by clicking the header.
I ripped all my CDs with Free Realplayer and imported the tracks into iTunes when I got an iPod – all the track numbers were already correct.

All I want to do is transfer TRUE MP3 files without the conversion, but I'm not sure where the settings are, and on which device, that's doing the conversion. Using Windows Vista OS and a new iPhone 4.

Edit > Preferences > Devices.
Uncheck the option for "Prevent iDevices from automatically syncing".
