Help! iTunes is making my iMac act like a Windows machine!

Here is the basic problem:
Some songs will not play properly in iTunes, pausing often and causing the spinning beach ball of death to freeze my iMac for 5 to 10 minutes at a time, sometimes longer. I am also having problems ripping those songs to a CD.
I am trying to decide if I should uninstall iTunes or simply back everything up and do a clean install of Snow Leopard and iTunes.
I’m also wondering if simply getting more RAM would solve my woes. I have 2GB, which worked well for years. I have 4GB coming in the mail.
I have a 2008 iMac. It has about 175GB of free space on its hard drive, about 144 GB in use. With iTunes playing a file and nothing of particular note open, it has just under 1GB of free system memory, or RAM. I have both the latest version of Snow Leopard and iTunes installed. All software is up to date. Except, of course, that I'm not running Lion.
I have a 45GB in music and 54GB in podcasts in my iTunes library.
I have corrected my hard drive’s permissions repeatedly but am unaware of any other maintenance I should be doing on my hard drive.
Here are some observations that may or may not be helpful:
Songs in the same folder are behaving differently, some consistently playing without a problem, others consistently spinning the beach ball.  For example, five songs off an album will freeze up my iMac but the album’s other songs do not.
I can, however, duplicate the symptoms with otherwise dependable songs by having more applications open. Nothing major, say Safari, Finder and iTunes. What I don’t get is why some songs would play well and others not when only iTunes is open.
Having a handful of applications open now sometimes prompts the spinning beach ball of death. This never used to happen, hence the RAM coming in the mail.
When I check information on the malfunctioning music files, it shows they contain data, but I start getting the beach ball checking  the file’s “sharing & permissions” status in "Get Info."
Interestingly, I recently had to stop backing up my podcasts in Time Machine because some of them were crashing it. My music files, however, have been backing up fine in Time Machine, so far.
Also, when I try to copy my music files onto an external drive or my desk top – in anticipation of reinstalling iTunes -- my iMac cites error 36 and stops the process.
My iMac’s performace problems started to occur before I finally updated to Snow Leopard a few months ago. Indeed, I thought updating would solve them.
I had been regularly updating iTunes, however, I recall reading somewhere that upgrading to Snow Leopard while having an up-to-date iTunes installed might cause problems.
There you have it. Any advice or insights would he most welcome.

Well, I seem to have solved my own problem. Do I get 10 points, I wonder? It appears that my poor iMac was in desperate need of a masssive cleaning. Thanks to other posts here and elsewhere, I found out about Cocktail, a free download -- unless you chip in for the more advanced version. This is a powerful and easy to understand tool. I used it to perk my iMac up to a level I have not seen in a LONG time. The spinning beach ball of death must go play elsewhere.  Among other things, I cleared out all my caches, eliminated a ton of foreign languages and did several repairs, including tracking down and killing a corrupted permission. It also taught me how to tap into my computer's activity logs and gave me other useful insights. GOOD stuff. I did other things not related to Cocktail to free up processing power -- such as turning off file- size view option in Finder -- but Cocktail is what solved this problem. As I type this, I am happily listening to songs that earlier would not play. What a relief. I am now especially looking forward to that new RAM. We'll be blazing fast then, by gum.

  • ReadObjectQuery acts like a gambling machine

    Hi there,
    I figured out that a ReadObjectQuery acts like a gambling machine, when the underlying TopLink expression and SQL statement respectively, selects more than one row. In this case the ReadObjectQuery does not throw an exception and returns some object of the result set.
    How can I force the ReadObjectQuery throwing an exception, if the result set has more than one object?
    Thanks,
    Leif Jakobsmeier

    Leif,
    There is an event on SessionEventListener that will notify you when a ReadObjectQuery returns more then one row.
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10464_01/web.904/b10491/oracle/toplink/sessions/SessionEventListener.html#moreRowsDetected(oracle.toplink.sessions.SessionEvent)
    You can have your own exception thrown my simply implementing and registering an event listener to handle this.
    Example:
    session.getEventManager().addListener(new SessionEventAdapter() {
         public void moreRowsDetected(SessionEvent event) {
    throw new RuntimeException("More then one row returned from ReadObjectQuery");

  • IMac acting like space bar being held down

    My iMac is acting like the space bar is being held down, even when keyboard and mouse are disconnected. How do I fix this problem?

    Well, some info, maybe more than you nedd, but...
    One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
    If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
    Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
    Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • How do I migrate my extensive ipad files and apps from my old iMac to my new windows machine?

    I had to go to a windows machine. All of my stuff, apps, books, music, pictures, etc. is on my iMac. Is there any way to gracefully move the information  from the iMac to the windows machine? It's about 60 GB.

    If all your data is on your iTunes library, follow the steps of this site to transfer your library to a PC with an external disk > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751 You have to do the "Restoring your iTunes Library backup" step on your PC.
    Apart from that, if you have got more data you want to transfer, you can put it in the external disk, too. You must do this because there isn't an app to migrate files from a Mac to the PC

  • IMac can not see Windows machine on network

    Hi guys,
    Before the AirPort Extreme Update 2007-02, my iMac can connect and share with my Windows machine. However, after installing the AirPort Extreme Update 2007-02, my iMac can not see my Windows machine work-group anymore. How to fix this problem ?
    Im using 20' iMac running on Mac OS X 10.4.8
    Please help.
    DeathNote
    iMac 20' inch   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    If reinstalling the current update doesn't work, perhaps that is because the update was completed properly, but in the process has messed up configuration settings files and preferences. If you can't find any problems in your settings through System Preferences, then there are probably hidden errors in the .plist files and the way to correct that is by manually wiping out all your network settings files and redoing everything in Network preferences may be a quicker fix than brain surgery. Try deleting these files, then reboot and redo your network settings appropriately..
    These are all in the folder /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.nat.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    Note, this will wipe out all network-related settings, and force the OS to rebuild default preference settings files for the built-in network devices. This is sometimes the only thing that will clear up bizarre networking issues, but generally speaking, it works well.. just don't forget to thoroughly note all your proper network settings including wireless network passwords and all that before you perform this house cleaning for reference as a precaution.

  • Making iDVD that will play on Windows machines

    Okay I need help. I've made an iDVD movie and it will play fine on all my mac's. However, I can't get it to play on Windows machines which most of the folks I will be sending the dvd to have.
    What am I not doing? I created the movie in iMovie and exported it to my movies folder. I then opened it from iDVD and then saved it as a disc image. I then burned that to a dvd.

    The DVD will play on my standard DVD player but when I load it in my Windows 7 machine it does nothing. I'm stumped why it won't load.
    Since some of the folks getting the DVD will try to load with a Windows machine I need to get this figured out. Any idea's out there?

  • ITunes 5 making my iMac G5 Crash for 1st time!!!

    This iTunes 5.0 update has caused my iMac G5 to crash several times since the I downloaded it. My iMac has only crashed once since I purchased it back in Feb of this year, now it has crased at least 4 times since the 5.0 update. What in the heck is going on. I'm writing this email from my PC laptop because I can't even do anything on my iMac.
    THIS IS INSANE!! I NEED HELP!!! Has anyone else had this problem besides me? Is a fix coming out soon??
    What should I do, I can't even use my iMac now?

    P.S.
    For the fist time now, when I restart my iMac the start-up music is gone. I find this very strange. What in the world is going on?

  • ITunes Match Making My iMac Non-functioning

    Recently when I try to upload a song to iTunes Match - it takes a very long time and stalls the loading of webpages and produces the beachball on iTunes.  If I load multiple songs at a time to iTunes, the wait time and disfunction increases.

    same problem plus my itunes library now has multiple librarycopies (2 to 10) of each tune overloading the machine, as all but one of the copies are dead links ....

  • Does "changing of fonts" act like a state-machine?

    hi all,
    in the past...i changed the font of a JComponent one at a time...i'm just wondering if changing fonts in Swing would be something like changing colours in OpenGL...
    for example:
    setColor(0, 0, 1);
    drawRectangle();
    drawCircle();
    setColor(0, 1, 0);
    drawTriangle();
    in the above...the rectangle and circle would be drawn with colour(0, 0, 1) but the triangle would be in colour(0, 1, 0)...
    how about in Swing GUI...can i specify the font just a line above each time i want the JComponent be in a different font?
    and is there a way to specify a font for the entire JPanel and all the JComponents it is containing?
    thank you very much!

    Well, the setFont() call should probably act in the way you describe, but I find it doesn't always.
    Particularly when you're using JMenuBars or applets, I find it important to set the font on each
    component individually.
    Also, it's pretty easy to set the font on a panel and everything underneath it...
    public void setFontRecursive(Container c, Font f) {
        c.setFont(f);
        Component[] children = c.getComponents();
        if (children != null) {
            for (int i=0; i < children.length; i++) {
                if (children[i] instanceof Container) {
                    setFontRecursive(children, f);
    } else {
    children[i].setFont(f);
    Bear in mind that this method will work for anything that extends Container (including Panel).
    Hope that helps!

  • Can I use my iMac screen with a Windows machine?

    This is sort of an upside-down question. I need to use a PC in order to access a Windows-only software. My friend has a give-away Dell laptop, but its screen is non-functional. Is there any way to get it to display on my iMac (or MacBookPro) screens?

    This can't be done if your PC has a VGA video output and requires a converter if your PC has a DVI video output. VGA is an analog signal and there are no converters to turn it into a digital Display Port (DP) or Mini Display Port (MDP) signal. DVI and HDMI are digital signals (with HDMI having audio and a different physical connector) that can be converted into a DP/MDP signal that the 27" iMac can use, but doing so requires an expensive converter or an even more expensive converter and scaler if you want to get full resolution on the target display. The cheaper but perhaps more complicated alternative is to replace your PC video card with a DP/MDP card after which you should be able to drive the 27" iMac display without any converter. Apple didn't include DVI/HDMI input capability in the 27" iMac because that would have required additional circuitry that would have raised the price substantially.

  • Random Program Crashes---feels like a Windows machine

    I am having very random program crashes, mainly with AOL Instant Messenger and Safari.
    For AIM, I will merely be typing or navigating between IM boxes, and a message will pop up that says:
    "The application AIM quit unexpectedly.
    Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
    Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple."
    I can post the technical specifications of the report if there is anyone that would actually be able to decipher them.
    I just recently got this machine--less than 21 days ago--and it has had this problem virtually straight out of the box.
    If there is any more information that anyone needs, I will be happy to provide. Please let me know if anyone else has had this problem and if there is anything I can do to fix it.

    Ty - It is certainly not unheard of to receive a complex electronics system with an intermittent defect that had escaped the manufacturer's QA tests. But in your case, since the problem started the moment you installed AIM, then that's what I would focus on. Even though you uninstalled it and reinstalled it, there is no real way to know for sure what the AIM uninstaller may have left behind. Since you've only had your machine for 3 weeks, I would suggest doing a clean install of the system. I know it's a pain, but if it worked fine before the AIM install/remove and not afterwards (and you've only installed a small number of apps), I think that's your best move.
    Only this time, use iChat rather than AIM.
