HELP!!! iTunes synced an empty iPhoto library...

HELP HELP HELP!!
I had to take my MacBook to my local Apple Store to get the screen flicker fixed and so I had everything backed up onto my iPod. I used the "Include Full Resolution" option to back up all of my 3000 pictures onto the iPod as well and also had "Enable Disk Use" checked. Therefore, I thought I could plug my iPod into my iMac and access my files that way...
I plugged it in and iTunes open and asks if I want to make this iPod belong to the library on the iMac, to which i said no. However, in the iPod "menu" automatically syncing songs, podcasts, videos, etc. was all unchecked, whereas the iPhoto libary was checked.
I don't have any pics in the iMac library so I suspect it replaced all 3000 with nothing...
Does ANYONE have any ideas at all as to how to resurrect these pics? They are not on my MacBook anymore b/c I told the Genius it was OK to wipe the HD since I had anything important on my iPod.
Anything and everything is appreciated :-D

Although you can set the iPod to manually manage other content, you can't manually manage photos as you've now found out.
Your only hope is some data recovery software as mentioned in this post.

I can not enable selected photos to sync to my iphone 5. It is greyed out. I do not want to sync my entire iPhoto library.. help!

Guys, I found another user and what he said to do worked!!! I have copied the information below:
This was 1 of the things that happend to me too, the other one was that at the bottom of the itunes page were it says all the memory info, it marked that I had over 3gb of other memory wich I didn't.
Anyways what I did was to unmark the calendar, contacts etc. ( so that they wont sync with the computer ), pressed apply,  then I marked all of them again, apply again and for last I pressed Sync wich is at the bottom right coner by the apply botton.
I'm not sure that had anything to do with it but it worked, my music appeard both of my itunes playlists and the ones I bought in itunes.  Also the other memory dissapeard and it's all good.
I'm not sure this will help you but thats my 5 cents, if the problem continues its better to call customer service and ask for a technician.
Hope your problem gets solved. Have a nice day.

  • Sync BOTH Aperture & iPhoto library

    Hello!
Is there a way to sync both Aperture & iPhoto library onto an iDevice? I know that I can import the iPhoto library to Aperture but this does not solve my problem.
I update both libraries separately as I use Aperture for RAW images which were taken with a DSLR and iPhoto for other image files from point-and-shoot cameras or mobile devices.
If I import iPhoto into Aperture and then later update the iPhoto library then the new images do not show up in Aperture or my iDevice.
    Thank you.

I'm using they both to get more free space.
Using two libraries in different applications to manage the same data does not get you "more free space". Precisely the opposite, in fact.
Unless you have a specific need for using iPhoto as well as Aperture, you should simply elect to use one and forget about the other. Pick one horse and ride it.

  • HT4236 I cannot see the photos from my last iphon sync in my iPhoto library on my mac. Help?

After my last sync with itunes on my computer, iPhoto is not showing the last couple months worth of photos from my iPhone camera role in my iPhoto Library. I tried closing iPhoto and restarting the computer and they are still not showing up. Any help?

Photos taken with the iphone are not part of the sync process at all.
You should be importing them to your comptuer regularly as you would with any digital camera.
Open iphoto, connect iphone, import photo

  • Empty iphoto library, albums still there, photos in Finder, help please

The last time I opened iPhoto with my library present, I got a message saying that this version of iPhoto could rebuild my thumbnails with better detail and did I want to rebuild now. I said yes, as they hadn't been rebuilt in a while. There were three files created after that ThumbJPGSegment.data, Thumb32Segment.data and Thumb64Segment.data. When I open iPhoto, it says "no photos" at the bottom and the screen is blank and gray. On the left only some of my albums are listed as they were, and all contain (0) photos. I do have all the pictures still there in Finder. I read the exchange from 10/31 with Terence and it would seem I have a corrupt file that needs to be copied or restored. I have a back-up of the library, but it exists in three parts. The first two were created using the backup facility back in June. Then I backed up, again with the utility, just the pictures between the last back-up and the end of our trip in July. We just completed a 10-month trip around the world and I have about 19G and 5,400 pix to restore and would like to keep them in the original albums, esp. since many have been photocasted and the links are all placed in a Photo Archive page on our website. Terence said to copy the library6.photo file from the backup to the hard drive, but can I do this in three parts? If I use the backup utility's restore command will that do it for me, considering the fact that the complete library is a combination of two different back-ups? Help please! Thx!

    Folks
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Iphone won't sync after moving iPhoto library to external hard drive

I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive, now my iTunes will not sync with my iphone. It has an error when syncing photos and quits
iPhoto works just fine, iTunes works just fine. This only occurs when syncing. Please help!

Put your iPhoto library on the external hard drive and hold your Option key down when opening iPhoto. Then just select the library on the external drive. You can have multiple libraries too.

  • Can 2 Macs sync photos in iPhoto Library?

    Hi everyone,
I have 2 Macs (iMac and MacBook both got 10.5.6 and iPhoto 09)
and I'm just wondering if I can sync photos in iPhotos on both Macs.
What I want to do is I just transfer photos from my camera to only one Mac
and then somehow 2 Macs have same photos.
Normally 2 Macs are connected wirelessly night time,
so somehow they can sync iPhoto Library automatically.
Like syncing contacts between iPhone and Mac...
Is there any way? or I'm just lazy...
    Thank you,
    Hiro

Since I recently purchased an iMac to go along with my MacBook Pro, I am now having this same dilemma. So far, the options seem to be cloud based syncs, local syncs, and local sharing.
Right away, local sharing is out for me since I want both computer to effectively be duplicates of one-another. In other words, I want my transition from working on one computer to the next to be nearly transparent.
For local sync, I am trying out ChronoSync as I have constantly heard it recommended, but there seems to be a major issue. When you open and close an iPhoto library, regardless of whether you change any content, it changes the modification date. Thus, if I were to load new pics on my MacBook, then open my iMac iPhoto and realize they weren't there, then sync (assuming a bi-directional sync setup), I would actually overwrite the MacBook because the package file on the iMac shows as newer. Bam, data lost. These package files Apple loves to use sure look elegant, but are causing problems all over the syncing world. Luckily, if you have Time Machine running, you can at least experiment with all of this with a relative degree of safety. The other nit-picky downside to local sync is that you have to establish a connection between the two computers to sync, meaning they both need to be on, and at least one needs file sharing active, which is a security concern.
The next option seems to be cloud-based sync. Dropbox is popular, but 2GB doesn't come close to my needs and when you start to get into the pay-for service, the capabilities look less impressive. Currently I am trying SugarSync. SugarSync looks like the end-all, be-all of sync/back-up, until you read the known issues. Again, the package files used for things like iPhoto (and other great apps like LicenseKeeper, 1Password, etc) are not supported. I am guessing it is for similar reasons--i.e. no ability to resolve which package is really the newest, regardless of the modification date. As a side-note, I find it a bit irritating that these companies advertise as if all these capabilities work, and worse, charge for a service that is incomplete. What Mac user doesn't want to at least sync iTunes and iPhoto? That's why we buy these softwares, after all. Anyway, I digress.
There is always iDisk too, if you are willing to pay for MobileMe. Thus far I am not really impressed with the performance of iDisk and everything I read suggests that iDisk's performance really takes a dive when working with--you guessed it--package files. Apple's left hand is clearly not talking to their right.
Notably, when setting up my new iMac, I was able to just copy over the whole iTunes and iPhoto library and they work just fine on the new mac. Thus, I think local sync at least has more promise right now (since most cloud-based syncs are based on incremental change for bandwidth purposes).
This all begs the question--with Time Machine's phenomenal success, why not expand that service into a backup/sync capable program. It makes total sense--time machine backs up every few minutes and is accessible via things like AirPort Extreme, or a host of the newer NASs that support TimeMachine. Moreover, TimeMachine supports all of Apples file conventions and is a language any Mac with Leopard forward understands. In other words, it would be great to have a single TimeMachine that worked for both my computers, keeping each one backed up and in sync, without the need to have two instantiations of TimeMachine. I realize this is not perfect, as many people keep different software setups or amounts of data on different computers, but nonetheless, I think that would be a killer upgrade that would move even more people into the Mac arena, or move more people with one Mac to invest in two. But, that's just my 2¢.

  • ITunes wont see my iPhoto library!  Unknown Error -50

Ive recently replaced my external hard drive.
When I try and sync any ipod I get the error 'Unkown Error -50'.
This stops happening if I untick the photos syncing from iPhoto option.
Why is my Itunes not seeing my iphoto folder?
    Tc

I have the same problem. If I recall correctly, the usual "solution" is to trash your iPhoto prefs and cache and rebuild the library (a simple "rebuild the library" from within iPhoto doesn't seem to work).
I guess I keep hoping a more elegant, less time-intensive solution comes along, but it's my guess Apple has no idea (or care) that this problem persists.

  • Photo Sync with new iPhoto Library

I created a new iPhoto-Library. This one is now set as "standard". But if i try to sync the photos from this new library to the iPhone, iTunes still shows the pictures from the old iPhoto-Library. How can I tell iTunes to use the new library?

This is normal, which cannot be changed.
All photos transferred from your computer and iPhoto to your iPhone are stored in your iPhone's Photo Library.
The photos in the iPhoto album include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library - the photos are not duplicated. Just as with iPhoto - all photos in all iPhoto albums are stored in your main iPhoto library. A photo cannot be in an iPhoto album unless the photo is available in your main iPhoto library, and a photo in your main iPhoto library can be in multiple iPhoto albums. The photos in the iPhoto albums are not duplicated - they include a pointer to the original photos stored in your main iPhoto library.
If you select multiple iPhoto albums to be transferred to your iPhone, all photos in all albums are stored in your iPhone's Photo Library. This way you can view all photos available in an album only by selecting the album under the Photo Library on your iPhone, or you can view all photos available in all albums by selecting Photo Library.
iTunes is the same. A song cannot be available in an iTunes playlist unless the song is in your iTunes library, and a song in your iTunes library can be available in multiple playlists. Songs in an iTunes playlist are not duplicated. This way you can listen to the songs in a playlist only by selecting the playlist, or you can listen to all songs in all playlists and/or available in your iTunes library by selecting Music.

  • Why cannot iTunes sync movies from iPhoto taken with iPhone

I take little movies with iPhone. (5Mb)
iPhoto copies then to the Mac with the Photos.
    Movie plays in iPhoto.
In iTunes I say Sync event and tick include videos on. The movies are not copied back to the iPhone.
Checked in iPhoto, event says 18 items (17 are photos one is the movie MOV04391.MPG)
In iTunes > Photos tab. the event only shows 17 items.
    Thanks in anticipation...

Try launching iPhoto while holding Option, to create an alternate iPhoto library that you can test with. You can always switch back to the original iPhoto library launching iPhoto while holding Option again.
If it works in the new test library, you'll probably want to switch back to the main library and then rebuild it by holding down the Command and Option keys when launching iPhoto.
Also, when you email photos from the iPhone you should see an option to email as actual size, along with the compressed options.
    WTH.

  • Since last upgrade I can't sync because the iPhoto library is not available

I upgraded Yosemite, iTunes and iOS. Now neither my iPhone or my iPad will sync. The sync gets halfway through and then fails because "the iPhoto library is not available". I've tried reloading Photos but when I look in the photo section in iTunes all I get is a spinning cursor. How can I get iTunes to recognise that Photos is the place to sync the photo library from? Alternatively, can I skip syncing photos and make the rest of the sync happen?

I think I've worked out how to fix this. I closed iTunes and ran Photos with the Option/Alt key depressed and told it to use the old iPhoto library as the System photo library. This caused Photos to reimport all the old photos into a new Photos library called Photos Library 2.
When I then ran iTunes and connected my iPad, I got a message saying that the photo source had changed and nothing would be synced until I selected the correct option. This did not happen the previous time I ran Photos and imported the old iPhoto library. I'm now syncing using the second Photos library and it all appears to be working.
I suspect that I closed my laptop down during the original conversion of the iPhoto library (thinking it had finished) and this interrupted the process. This time I let it carry on working for four hours before opening iTunes and I suspect that is what made the difference. Of course, I've lost all the photos I added in the last ten days, but I may be able to retrieve them from my backups.

  • Help! renamed folders in iPhoto library

I have encountered a problem with my iPhoto library. I wanted to save some photo files onto a memory device and did not know how to do this directly from iPhoto. I went into the iPhoto library and found that the photos were in files named only with numbers making it very difficult for me to find the photos I wanted. As a result I decided to rename all the files so that I could find a photo more easily. I then tried to view some photos in iPhoto and found that I could not view them, only the thumbnail version of the photo at the top of the screen. After checking the help file I found that you should not tamper with the names of files or folders in the iPhoto library (why was there no warning when I was renaming the folders?) Can you please give me instructions on how I can rectify this situation and also advise me on the best was to save photos onto an external disc. thanks

Just re-import the photos to iPhoto. Since they have data such as the time and date they were taken, branded in them, they will re-create the proper folders they ought to be stored in.

  • Help! Can't Import iPhoto Library into Aperture

I have a new MacBook Pro with Lion, Aperture 3, and iPhoto 11.
I followed the pre loaded video directions and every time I receive this message:
"Importing libraries from versions earlier than iPhoto 7.1.5 is not supported. Please upgrade your iPhoto library with iPhoto 7.1.5 or later."
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Do you receive this error message from iPhoto or from Aperture?
You are supposed to upgrade your iPhoto Libraries to version '11 by opening them in the most recent iPhoto version, before importing to Aperture.

  • Dont sync big file (iPhoto Library)

I sync to iCloud Drive by iPhoto Library. After reinstall OS i can't sync it to my Macbook Pro 13". All another files success sync. I try to download it from iCloud.com, but iCloud Drive get error.

iCloud Drive has a size limit of 15GB.  And an iPhoto Library must not be stored on iCloud Drive. That is not supported. You can only store iPhoto Libraries on locally mounted volumes.  Storing your iPhoto Library in a cloud may corrupt the library. It is not safe.
See this link: iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.
iPhoto libraries should be stored on a locally mounted Mac OS X Extended drive for best performance.
If you want to store your Photo Library in iCloud, wait until the new Photos app for Mac will be released later this year. It will support iCloud Photo Library, see this apple preview:     Apple - OS X - Photos Preview

  • HELP! i lost my iphoto library!

i tried to open my iphoto library just now but apparently i dont have it... its an alias. or somthing... i know how to use computers excet when they stuff up so this has me stumped... i looked in the trash and it wasnt there. the alias wont open, it asks me to find the original. i have no ideea what that means.
if anyone has any idea what is going on. please help me. i need my photos!!!
    thanks
    Mary Elizabeth

An alias of a file is an icon that looks like the original and will point to the original. If you click on the alias, the original should open. However, I don't know if that applies to the iPhoto Library.
Did you mean that you were trying to open iPhoto? The iPhoto Library is the storage file for all your photos. iPhoto is the application to use to view and edit your photos. See this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165521
Do you know if your photos are still on your computer? By default, they are stored in the Pictures folder. Open that, and see if you have the library there, and if there are photos in it. DON'T CHANGE OR RENAME OR MOVE ANYTHING--just see if your photos are there.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165521
In iPhoto 5's iPhoto Library, you should see something like this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61262
If you see that the files are there, you can rebuild your library and see if that will recover the photos for you. Follow these steps to rebuild your library:
    QUIT IPHOTO FIRST
Relaunch while holding down the key combination Command+Option. See this for tips: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107947
Post back if any of this is not clear, or if you are still having problems.
