HELP! iTunes won't let me put music on my iPod

I need help, whenever i try to transfer my music on to my iPod, for itunes, it won't let me put it on my iPod.
I NEED HELP!!!!!
  Windows XP

Okay, I see.
That's most likely because you are automatically syncing your iPod.
If you click on your iPod in the Source List of iTunes, and go to the "Music" tab, you are probably selected for "Sync", and either selected playlists, or all songs.
On the Syncing optoin, you cannot drag files to your iPod without setting up your iPod for manually managing, perhaps just temporarily.
See this for details on manually managing your iPod:

  • ITunes won't let me put music from Frostwire on it

My computer had a trojan on it, but luckily I got it off using Malaware. After I got it off, iTunes will not let me put music from Frostwire on it anymore. Ive done this with hundreds of songs before the virus, but now it won't seem to let me.
    Please help me!
    Thanks!

I'm not surprised to read you got some malware. It may have come from a Frostwire download.
Downloading "free" p2p music isn't so shiny anymore, is it.
My advice is to get your music from legal sources, and you will have no trouble adding them to itunes.
If I am misunderstanding Frostwire and it's a legal music downloading service, I am sure their support forums can help.

  • Out of no where, itunes won't let me add music to my ipod touch.

I have itunes 10.4.1 and ipod is 4.2.1. Please help, this is so frustrating! It won't let me drag and drop and it won't work by right clicking either.

I had a similar problem recently after an update. Midway through the update, I got a user error that said I had to wipe the device and restore to factory settings. After I did that, I restored from a recent back up. When I did that it would not allow me to add recently purchased music to playlists on the device. I could not figure out how to fix this anywhere. Finally, in iTunes  I clicked on my iTouch on the list on the right. Then in the big box on the left I clicked on summary. Then I scrolled to the bottom where "Options" was displayed. I clicked on "Manually manage music and videos" and then "apply". Suddenly, I could add music to my established playlists on my device! Hooray! Perhaps this happened to you and that box is unchecked? Good luck.

  • HT1386 New version of iTunes won't let me move music to my iPod.

How do you move music from your iTunes library to your iPod with the new version of iTunes?

If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar.  Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar.
To sync to your iPod go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Syncing your iPod....>Sync You Device and follow the instructions.

  • Iphone on Itunes won't let me select music

Got a new computer, all was going well. Now I find that when I plug in my Iphone Itunes won't let me select music folders to sync, it is all grayed out. It sees the Iphone , charges it and lets me change applications. Just not music or Photos. I removed Itunes then dowloaded it to see if that would help. It didn't.

The iPhone does not support disk mode, and in regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred to an iPhone from a single computer only. When syncing iTunes content and transferring photos from a different computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from another computer will be erased from the iPhone first.
Did you transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer along with photos and all other important data?

I have just installed itunes, and i purchased an application from the app store.

What happens when you try? Is the App compatible with your version of iPod Touch? Compatible with your version of the iOS.

  • My new iPhone 5 will connect to iTunes, but won't let me put music or pictures onto it...

My new iPhone 5 shows up in iTunes, but won't let me put pictures or music onto my phone. They are both under the same iTunes account and it let me transfer stuff onto my old iPhone 4 before. I don't know why it won't let me now. Both are updated also... Please help!!

Thank you so much! I can't believe I didn't think to check that. I synced it to iTunes, but I didn't think to see if those were checked or not and they weren't. I checked them, and resynced and its working perfectly. Thanks so much!!!

  • ITunes/my phone won't let me put music on my phone? I can see it but it won't let me select it in "on this phone"

    Hey there,
I have had my iPhone 5 since October and every time I would do an update the phone would crash and I had to start from scratch every time (thank god for back ups). So I finally got the chance to switch out my phone at an apple store about a month ago. Since then though, I have not been able to sync any music on to my phone. I have tried the newest versions of software possible, tried restoring my phone from the last back up of the old phone and other various things I could think of. Even when I got to the "on this iPhone" tab, it shows me all the music that is supposed to be on there. Problem is that it is all unselected and it won't let me select them. Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". . If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and Playlists" in the iPod preferences. For more detail see this tutorial: Managing Your Songs Manually
One thing to be aware of with manually updating is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod
    For info: iPod 101
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • My recently new computer and iTunes won't let me add music to my iPhone. What do I do?

I recently got a new computer. I downloaded iTunes and went to add new music to my iPhone4, but it wouldn't let me add it. When i tried to press "Manually manage music and videos" it told me that since i already synced my iphone to the old computer, i had to erase everything from my iPhone to be able to. I don't want to erase my phone. I'm pretty sure there is another way since people get a new computer everyday, but I don't know how. Help?

Yes... that's the way it works.
You can only sync an iDevice with one computer.
Move or copy all the iTunes content from the old computer (or backup of the old computer) to the new computer.
Then sync the iDevice with the new computer.  It will still wipe the device, but at this point it will not matter because all the content will be on the new computer to sync to the device.

  • My iTunes won't let me add music from a file, button stays on open and not add! don't know what to do!

I have been trying to add music files to my library however the button is alway OPEN, and not add.  I have tried updating my itunes, dragging and dropping, and again trying to open it in add file.  Please help! I don't know what else to do.

It wants to erase your iPhone because you are not syncing it to the same library.
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss.  To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
iCloud only stores a copy of your non-iTunes purchases if you subscribe to Match. It still isn't the best way to get your music to a new computer.  That's
(if you use iTunes' default preferences settings):  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • Help!! Itunes won't let me downgrade on my 2g ipod touch. Can anyone help?

I just got a macally microphone for the ipod touch and I found out that it's not compatible with the 3.1.3 firmware. So I have to downgrade to the 3.0 Firmware in order for the mic to work. But that's the problem, it won't let me downgrade at all! I tried holding in shift, then pressing restore. That didn't work. Every time I try to downgrade it says "The ipod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (20)" Does anyone know how to fix this?

If you actually have the 3.0 FW on your computer, you may be able to downgrade by first putting your Touch into "DFU Mode", then use the Shift-Restore technique to select the 3.0 OS file. I won't go into the DFU Mode instructions here, plenty of explanations around here and the web in general. Note that this is not a practice supported by Apple.

  • TS1538 iTunes won't let me sync!  3rd gen ipod touch

My iPod touch 3rd gen is seen by windows, seen by itunes, but when I click on the device on the sidebar to bring up the information, it just says "ipod" where my music selection usually is.  Just a big frustrating white screen that won't let me do anything.  I've spent the last hour going through all Apples troubleshooting and still nothing.  Re-installed the drivers; started and stopped apple mobile device whatever, went through EVERY SINGLE STEP listed here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1410 and nothing.  Reset my computer, restarted the device multiple times, restarted itunes, disonnected, re-connected, held both home and sleep button past the "turn off device" screen, nothing.  Any idea's on why this doesn't work now that I've done a factory reset?

You should have all of your music on the new computer, assuming you have used your backup copy to put the music on the new computer.
When you sync, it will erase the ipod and put the content from the new computer on the ipod ( which should be the same, since it came from your backup copy).

  • Itunes won't let me delete items on my Ipod Touch

I am trying to delete songs on my newly purchased Ipod Touch, and Itunes instructions say to:
Connect your iPod to your computer.
When the iPod icon appears in iTunes, select it.
If the disclosure triangle to the left of your iPod is closed, click it so that you can see the iPod contents.
Select the item you want to delete and press the Delete key.
However when I click the disclosure triangle the contents of my Ipod are grayed out in Itunes, and I cannot delete or otherwise manipulate the contents. How can I get Itunes to allow me to manipulate items on my Ipod Touch?
Also I have some songs thats were imported from Windows Media Player that had Album artwork. When I tranfered to Itunes the album artwork disappeared and when I press "Get Album Artwork", Itunes can't find the artwork (I've never had this problem with Window Media Player).
I've tried manually dragging and dropping artwork into the blank album covers in Itunes to no avail. How can I add new Cover Art to Itunes, and then tranfer it my Ipod touch?

Hello, and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
for you to be able to add and delete songs, you need to enable "Manually Manage" on your iPod. Click on it as described, on the right check the little box on the bottom of the General tab. Or, if you still want the sync to be automatic, tell iTunes which playlists to sync on the Music tab. I find this to be much more convenient, as any changes in these playlists will automatically reflect on the iPod.
As for the artwork, mark all the songs from one album, right-click -> Get Info and paste the artwork in its field.
    Hope this helps.
