There are so many things to try other than the 5 Rs. If you would have kept reading or looked at the other link, you might find something that helps.
And the 5 Rs aren't really "drastic"...
Since your iPod is showing up in Windows, this article specifically addresses the problem you are experiencing...
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes
And no 5Rs! (I posted that link before, but you may not have looked at it)
You may also want to try restarting your computer.

Hm... Strange.
I had reset the iPhone.
I tried disabling the auto-launch of iPhoto, and...
...when I plugged iPhone in, it started to freeze iTunes, but after a minute or so, the iPhone started synching. I found this odd because I had disabled auto-sync (I press Sync in iTunes when I want to have it Sync).
Now, of course, I do want auto-launch of iPhoto back on, since I like it for when I attach my digital cameras. I hope that when I set it back, it won't re-introduce the problem.
The restart I did may have helped. I resist restarting because my wife's account is often open and she frequently leaves unsaved files up, so it is a pain to respectfully close out her work and then restart.

Not if you first do a sync and have iTunes make a backup. However, if your only copy of the iTunes data is in the Touch, then you need to first copy the data to a new iTunes Library using third-party software such as Phone To Mac.

ITunes not responding when I plug in my iPod

Hey all, I need some help. Recently when I plug my iPod into my PC to update my iPod with the new music that I have loaded into iTunes, as soon as I do iTunes stops working and when I checked in my windows task manager under appplications/status it says iTunes is not responding. when my iPod is not plugged in, iTunes works fine. I can't get past this. Yes I did load the updated software, it didn't help. Does anyone have any suggestions?

This is also happening to me updated latest version of Itunes. Itunes works fine but doesn't show the ipod when I attach. Tried most of the hints on the web site but nothing is working. Plugged the ipod into my base station and hey presto it works fine. I have also tried top re load the ipod software on the lap top but this isn't working either it asks for the ipod to be plugged in when it is plugged in it doesn't see it. Yet in windows explorer you can see the ipod is connected. Any idea's anyone. Shall i try to install version 6.0.0 of itunes instead of the latest version ?

Please reinstall iTunes to install the required software." It started completely randomly and now does it every time. I completely wiped out iTunes and reinstalled it via the intructions from this website, but it is still doing the same thing. Furthermore, when I go to Start, All Programs, the iTunes folder contains no data AND the desktop shortcup does nothing when clicked on. I have to go to Start, Run, and type in itunes.exe in order to run the program. Can anyone tell me what is going on?

> Restore the iDevice completely (will erase everything)

New iTunes 10 update on my iMac makes my iPod Classic glitchy

I need help. I just downloaded the new iTunes 10 and now my songs on the iPod just go from song to song and only play occasionally (often the songs won't play at all). It is very frustrating. Also, with this new "update" some of my album artwork does not show up on my iPod anymore with the songs... I just bought a new song today and now after this "update" it won't play on my iPod... what do I do?

At least your iTunes update didn't delete all the songs you bought previously from the Apple Store!
The problem is most likely due to the upgrade to iTunes 10.
The solution should be forthcoming from Apple...if and when they get enough complaints from folks like you.
So, contact the Apple music store and let them know (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/)
As for me - I'm staying with iTunes version 7 on both my Mac and iPod classic - I've had enough problems with Apple software upgrades.

Why not? What happens when you try? How are you trying to sync them or do you manually manage your iPod's content? Are you getting any specific error messages from iTunes?

My suggestions, when Restoring the iPod.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your iPod to the PC, using a high speed USB 2.0 port at the back of your PC.
Disconnect all other USB devices, except the mouse and keyboard.
Stop all other programs except iTunes.

If you have all of the songs and videos still in your library I would recommend doing the restore of the iPod.
