Help! iWeb can't publish to .Mac & folder, keeps hanging.

Hi guys, would appreciate your help here. I'm new to to using iWeb. Just purchased and installed iWeb a couple of days ago. I've designed my webpages using iWeb and uploaded into www.mac.com, just the basic Welcome, About Me and Blog pages.
But after that 1st successful attempt, my iWeb can't synchronise with iDisk & .Mac properly and it froze in the middle of the publishing process. I was forced to force quit iWeb. Subsequent attempts to publish using the Publish button and Publishing to Folders alternatives yielded the same results - connection error, hanging of iWeb and fruitless synching of webpages to iDisk & .Mac. So ended up can't proceed or update my already published webpages.
After that I registered another .Mac account and tried publishing directly, publishing to folder, synchronising etc... but still no luck as iWeb either hanged, gave error box stating "check internet connection or totally didn't synch the files at all to Homepage though the process went thru.
I also discovered that after restarting my powerbook, there are folders in the trash with names such as com.apple.iWeb584_1862039531. Does that render iWeb unfunctionable.
Any help is much appreciated.

My site is very small. The capacity taken up indicated by iDisk after synching is only 1MB. Bandwidth tests indicated an estimated 4700kbps download speed and 300kbps upload speed. Currently, I'm subscribed to a 10Mbps ADSL broadband plan and connected wireless to the router *** modem.
The present configuration for the internet settings include a web proxy (HTTP) as given by my ISP. I've read somewhere in this forum that proxies may filter or block non-standard html codes generated from/by iWeb.
I've tried to bypass that proxy by connecting via ethernet cable to the router and unchecking the proxy setting. But another error occurred stating 'configuration error' by iWeb.
So does the problem lie with the proxy settings or with iWeb itself?
PS: I can't get my ISP to turn off the proxy, and the only way to take away that proxy is to terminate the internet subscription.

For iWeb, I like to do only one site per domain file. I move domain files out of the Application Support folder and place them inside project or client folders, or in DropBox. Once you duplicate a domain file and begin customizing it, it will load and behave as a separate project/site.
I publish each iWeb domain/project direct to a server via FTP. Sometime I publish to a folder, then upload via FTP manually.
iWeb is a remarkable tool, especially when you work from scratch with blank tamplates

Absolutely can't publish to .mac

like the title says, I just can't publish to .mac, I tried almost everything, and every time I get the following error:
An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites”. Try publishing again later.
I tried publishing from another user, new site from scratch, trashed all prefs, ...
Nothing works... i think it's a problem with my iDisk, since /Web/Sites is the directory on your iDisk iWeb publishes to, but how you reset your iDisk? I trashed all files in the directory Sites and RSS but that didn't help...
Any help, I'm getting desperate...

I just got a reply from Apple, but just the usual proposals, so I answered right back, here's my answer:

Thanks for the response, I will try to answer your mail as good as possible.
First, the possible solutions you mention.
- I have the last version of iweb, version 2.0.2
- I tried republishing all pages to .mac. The error happens when I choose "publish all" or just "publish"
What happens, is iWeb starts to create all the web pages, and then starts uploading. Then it even starts uploading all the pages, when all pages are uploaded, the progress bars are all filled, I get one of the following errors:
*An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites”. Try publishing again later.*
or "an unknow error occurred"
or *An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites”. Try publishing again later.*
After that all pages appear as unpublished. The strange thing is that the pages are in fact published, but iWeb sees them as unpublished. However all .mac functions as comments, search boxes and counters don't work...
- I tried publishing my sites over a dozen times, over several days. Publishing takes a very long time, over 6 hours... So every day I give it another try, but with no success...
- My .mac password isn't over 20 characters long...
- I can publish to a folder. That's what I did right now, I published my sites to a folder and manually uploaded them to my iDisk. But that takes a very, very long time, and doesn't give me an convenient way to just publish changes to the site, and also the .mac functions like search, comments, etc. don't work then.
- My sites aren't password protected.
- I can upload to my iDisk.
- I don't have any other network problems, I could publish to .mac in the past and my network hasn't changed since. All network or internet related apps work as they always did.
So I guess, I tried all your proposed solutions but publishing still doesn't work...
If you are still unable to publish to .Mac with iWeb, please respond to this message with the following information:
- A detailed description of the troubleshooting steps you have taken
I think I tried almost anything, publishing to a folder, choosing publish all, deleted all files from my iDisk and started over, and all the proposed solutions above. I've been using Mac's since 1992, so I do know my way around, but that's one problem I just can't seem to solve...
- A step-by-step description of what you were trying to accomplish when the error messages occurred
I just choose publish all, or publish, doesn't matter, always the same error and iWeb sees all my pages in my 3 sites as unpublished.
- The exact text (if possible) of the error messages you received

- A description of your network, including whether it has hubs, routers, cable or DSL modems, wireless routers (including AirPort), or proxy servers
I have a dsl line, connected to an airport express. I use my Powerbook wireless over airport.
Please also answer these questions:
- Does this issue occur with other computers on your network?
There are no other computers in my network
- Does this issue occur when your computer is on a different network?
I have the same network setup at the office, dsl to an airport express, I have the same errors there.
- When were you last able to publish to .Mac successfully?
I think a few weeks ago... I can publish to my .mac Gallery from iPhoto and can manually upload to my iDisk. All other .mac functions as sync and backup also seem to work...
Hopes this helps to find a solution for my problem, and that I can publish my sites again from iWeb.
If you need any more information, I'll gladly answer them.

Can i publish to .mac if i am behind a proxy?

I just arrived on a new campus and i can't get passed the login phase to .mac and so i can't publish to .mac. any suggestions?

Very unlikely that you will get past that proxy server.
If financial constraints will allow, get a Verizon air card for your PowerBook. I've used one for years and I don't think I've ever been disappointed with it. The one I use is almost as fast as my land line--I've put up entire sites with it before.
I use the KPC650. You will be glad you made the investment, as you can then use your PowerBook for practically anything.

Can't Publish to a folder on iWeb

I host two web sites for a genealogy program ( USGENPROJ ) and have been using an old Pagemill program , with Fetch for my FTP. I just bought iWeb ( part of iLife 8) and started transferring some of my pages over from Pagemill to iWeb. I click "publish to a folder" ( as I'm not using .Mac ). The dialog box asks for my URL ( which I copy & paste right from one of my two existing web sites). When I click to transfer the info to the folder I always get an " unknown error" notice. I've tried a number of times and always get the same error . Please help.

Roddy: In Pagemill, I select a block of text and "copy" it. Then I open iWeb & choose a "blank" template , draw a text frame and then click "paste". Now I've transferred my selected text to my iWeb page. Everything is working ok at this point and the text is now on my iWeb page. Next, I choose " publish to a folder" as I'm not using .Mac . I want to "transfer" my text to the folder so that I can see what its going to look like on Safari. A dialog box opens up asking me to insert the URL exactly as it will be seen on the web site, so I go to the existing web site and "copy" the URL, then back to the dialog box and "paste" in the URL, then I click" create". At this point I get the "unknown error" message. and a couple of times the Safari site opens up saying it doesn't recognize the URL and it shows something like the following: /users/monty/desktop/site/blank/. I believe I'm following the instructions but it always ends up with the error notice. Thanks for getting back to me -- Monty

Can't publish to .mac OR my ftp site... can someone help?

Hi all... I tried my best to glean answers from existing posts, but alas could not, so I am posting my blurb in hopes that someone can just point me in the right direction. Problem: Since upgrading to iWeb '09, I can't publish to either my .mac space or my other server (bluehost) without getting errors. On the .mac side, the upgrade caused my entire site to go "red" (meaning it needs to be re-published, I assume). When I hit the "publish" button, away it goes through the page creation process, then begins uploading the site (I assume). An hour or more later it comes up with this message:
"An error occurred while publishing the file "/private/var/folders/SP/SpSOe.../ TemporaryItems/com.aple.iWeb_62.... (etc.)... /mysite/evo/Archive/files/rptilev6-1.jpg". Try publishing again later.

When I try publishing (different website) to an FTP folder -- the reason I upgraded to iWeb '09, and this was going to be BIG for me -- hitting the "test" button results in a "you're good to go" message (or whatever it says). All seems well. And when I hit the Publish button, the pages are promptly created and it begins uploading the site. After 10-15 minutes though, it stops, and I get a simple message saying "There was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again later, or check with your service provider." The console.log reveals this message appearing just before the aforementioned "error" message: "Operation could not be completed. Could not connect to server "blahblah.com."
My normal FTP client (Fetch) reveals that a bunch of the files and folders have been successfully uploaded, but only a few. I am then able to use Fetch to upload the entire site with no problem.
Any ideas? A clue or two would be appreciated. Will I be able to use iWeb '09 to upload ANYTHING from here on out? Many thanks in advance!

We should start a club. I upgraded from 08 to 09 twelve days ago, on both my MacBook Pro and my brand new iMac. All my iWeb files immediately went red on both machines and stayed that way - and several pages of my website disappeared. All attempts to upload to MobileMe failed, whether I tried to upload the full site or just the changes. Sometimes I got (and still get) a Publish Error message, sometimes a 'Couldn't connect with MobileMe'. I've followed all suggestions on this discussion board and have been on the phone to Apple chat lines, who also offered suggestions that didn't solve my problem. Last week I spend fair portions of three days on the phone to AppleCare in Ireland. Very helpful, very nice, and after much experimentation, including dragging my site to different files on my iDisk, we managed to make my site live again. But the files on my desktop remained red and I still couldn't upload changes. AppleCare were going to continue to try and come up with a solution, but I haven't heard from them for a week now, and they're no longer answering my emails. Perhaps the person I was talking to is away at the moment, I don't know. What I do know is that I'm no nearer finding a solution.
Today another Apple adviser suggested removing Logic from my Applications folder because Logic 08 can conflict with GarageBand 09 apparently, and reloading iWeb (for the fourth time). I did this. No change. But it might work for one or two of you.
The point is, if none of these solutions work for us, what can we do? I really like iWeb and am a big Apple fan until something like this happens. And it shouldn't happen, to any of us, especially if we have the most up-to-date software and equipment.

I upgraded from iWeb '06 to iWeb '09-now I can't publish to a folder

I'm having 2 issues after upgrading from a powerbook G4 running Tiger with iWeb '06 to a macbook pro running Snow Leopard with iWeb '09. I migrated my website created with iWeb '06 over to iWeb '09 and I'm having 2 issues.
1. Every page in the website brings up a window that says "The following errors occurred while trying to open this document: Type: Substituted Font; Description: The font "Arial-BoldMS" was substituted for..."
Then it says "To include missing fonts, add them to your fonts folder, then quit and reopen iWeb."
This happens every time I open iWeb, even after I click "Continue" in the dialogue box. Where can I find the font that is being replaced--it doesn't list it in the dialogue window. And how can I download it to add to my fonts folder?
2. When I try to "Publish Entire Site" or "Publish Site Changes," a dialogue window pops up saying "Publish Error: Can't create the file "index.html." The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges."
I am the administrator user, so that's not the issue. I have over 300 GBs of free disk space, so that's not the issue. The disk is not damaged because everything else is working just fine.
I am not familiar with the way iWeb '09 publishes. In iWeb '06, when I selected "Publish to a folder" from the File drop down window, it brought me to a screen in order to select a folder to which to publish. That feature is gone in iWeb '09, with the "Publish entire site" and "Publish site changes" taking its place, but I don't see where it has options to configure FTP or even input where you want your site to go and what domain name it is. How do I direct iWeb to publish the site to a folder or upload it to my Godaddy.com web host?

Help....Can't publish to.mac

when i try to publish my site, Iweb cant seem to log in. Keeps opening up my preferences, but my name and password are already there and accepted. I can even work through my idisk just cant publish through .mac
any help would be appreciated1

It may also be a problem on Apple's side. When I was at the WWDC last month, I thought that my hotel's wireless Internet access was blocking whatever port iWeb uses for authentication. However, when I arrived at the conference I got the same problem trying to publish my page, I was asked to log in to .Mac. However, by lunch time the issue had resolved itself and I could upload from either site. Unfortunately, if you check the .Mac status page, this kind of interruption is NOT listed, so you have no way of knowing if it's Apple's problem or your own. You might just give it a little time to see if the issue resolves on its own.

Can not publish to .mac, iweb 08 freezes

A couple of days ago I attempted to update my .mac site using iWeb 08 and got an error message saying that the .mac servers were not responding or something along those lines. Tonight I tried again and this time iWeb just freezes up when trying to connecto to my .mac account. These last two times when I've tried to update was the only time I've ever seen the "connecting to .mac account" small popup come up after I select Publish to .mac account. Before (unless my memory fails me), it just went straight to uploading.
I just tried going to the .mac site via apple.com and I couldn't even login. Guessing my problem has something to do with this.
Anyone else having problems with their .mac account?

HELP I can't publish my lab homepage to my university server

I can't publish my new homepage to my space on my University's server and I really don't understand all the other suggestions in the other threads about editing html, etc .... That's why I bought iLife in the first place....to simplify my life.
I have 5 colleagues who are waiting for my verdict on this software before they buy it.... I need an answer ASAP, or Apple loses 5 potentail purchases .... and I'll be returning my version as well.......

If you publish to a .Mac account, its a one step process.
-Select File-> Publish to .mac
If you publish to another server its a 2 step process
-Select File->Publish to a folder
You then have to ftp the folder to the web server
I am sure folks are working on using Automator to get this scripted for ease of use.
I think the IWeb Templates are pretty good so I don't plan on messing around with HTML at this time. I can live without the web counter and with the slide show pop ups for now

I have been trying to publish changes to my site for days, and nothing is working. I reinstalled OS X, reinstalled iLife '08, everything. iWeb crashes halfway through publishing.
I have been able to publish to a folder ... so is it something in .Mac?
Help please, I need my site back up.

Thanks again for your helpful efforts ... unfortunately nothing I've tried has yet to work I have called the support lines and they have not been able to help and I was told to submit a ticket online and I'm still waiting for help 6 days later!!! I went into my keychains while on the phone with apple support and while doing exactly as told ALL but 3 keychains were deleted and now not only is .Mac / iWeb still mixed up but now my whole computer!!! Any other suggestions for iweb or how to fix my keychains? If I didn't have so many important things on my computer ... I would be throwing it out the window! This is all getting worse by the day

HELP - I can't publish!

Everything was working fine on my 2006 iWeb on June 4th. That was when I last updated my web page. After that, I made a few pages, and whenever I try to publish (either "publish to .Mac" or "publish all to .Mac"), the following happens:
1. I get the normal "preparing to publish" window.
2. I get a window that says "Publish error - an unknown error occurred."
If I go to my web site, it still is working fine (but not updated). I do not appear to have any problems with my account. I just have no idea what the problem is.
PLEASE, any ideas? Is this Apple's way of telling me I need to upgrade? If I do upgrade, will I lose my site?

I am having the same problem. First it would not publish because it was having a problem with a particular file. Then a certain page.
Now I have received this error: "An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites/iWeb/Site/Gu Antigua Picayafiles/IMG7787.jpg”
the referenced file is on a page that is not even being updated....

Can't Publish to .Mac

When ever I try to publish my site to .Mac I get this error:

I don't have any advice, but am having similar problems. My error message is a bit different: The .Mac servers are busy. Please try again later. Its been busy since December 7...so pretty sure that's not the case. Tonight, I was able to publish a few pages and then I made some changes and went to publish again. This time it said I had published and I went to visit the site but none of the changes were there. I am totaly irritated. Sometimes it says it can't publish and it really does. I have been on the phone with applecare and attempting to resolve the problem with the .Mac people, but they are barely responsive at all. I am very disappointed.

Have run out of room on iweb, can't publish. Can I delete data and reclaim space?

I have been working on my website for ages, constantly doing and redoing and saving each time. Now I get a message that I've run out of room & can't publish. I kow I can buy more space, but it's annoying because I'm sure there is a mass of trash I could delete from the changes I've made. But where is it, and how can I dump it. Is it possible?

It's a regular error with MobileMe. Usually it says that you run oit of space.
