Help! iweb is eating my website!

I'm building a site for my business. It includes 3 picture galleries. I've been working on adding pictures last night, saved every thing, closed the mac book and walked away. Today I open up iweb, go to one of my galleries and the page is blank! No pictures, not even a template, just a white empty page. The other galleries are still there and both appear in the main gelleries index page. The missing gallery's name still appears in the left navigational window.
What on earth happened? How do I get my page back? If it's gone for good, how can I be sure this won't happen again? I've put many hours of hard work into this site, this is rather unnerving! The site isn't even published yet.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Close iWeb, delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple. iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iWeb and see if that helps.

  • Iweb SEO TOOL for iweb09 any help please Cannot locate my websites???

Hi I have just downloaded iweb SEO tool which sounded so good, but when you start you have to locate my website (which was created on iweb 09) and I cannot find it. It doesn't ask for your web address just comes up with OPEN FILE and you have to locate it manually but I can't find it anywhere? Any ideas as to what it would be stored under on my mac? Has anyone had any succes with this programme?

In +iWeb SEO Tool+, click on the Help menu and choose +iWeb SEO Tool Help+ — it should open a PDF document in Preview. In page 6 of that Help document, it says:
Just open the program and add your iWeb based websites by clicking the ‘Open Website’ button. This option will let you edit a local website folder. That is, a website that you have created in iWeb and selected ‘Publish to Folder’ from the File menu.
If you've published your site to MobileMe's iDisk, then see further down that same p.6: +"Editing a Website on your iDisk"+

  • Iweb 2.0.3 website generated not workinf at all for firefox or IE...

I have made a very simple site dropping iphoto pictures, and saved it onto a file. When I call the index.html file from IE (whatever the version) or firefox, no pictures, no navigation, just some text comes. (just Safari on PC works fine). Using the java console, I can see lots of error messages that seem to make this site hangover. The messages are :
Error: unterminated character class ^ in (my site...)/iWebSite.js (programmer hieroglyphing to me)
the error is located at line 1044 : var urlParts=urlString.match(/^ at this sign.
Same error within navbar.js, error at line 25: text=text.replace(/\ at this sign
then I've got "detectBrowser is not defined" in iWebimages.js, "navbar not defined" in
"voyages.html" my page)*, "setTransparentGifURL"** and "loadMozillaCSS in voyages.js, tinyMCE in messagepost (line 4046), and some errors about "$ not defined in WidgetCommon.js (line 16). Some functions are not found ? Where the **** are they ?
(I am giving the lines, because I believe iWeb generates always the same kind of code, and line numbering).

I hace tried with less pictures (I am showing 1000), with no results, so it should not come from the amount of data, more onthe iWeb side.
I have no clue on html code writing, and I am not doing weird things (just showing pictures and using iWeb because the slideshow is nice (Safari). I am a bit puzzled by those errors on a very simple site (does Apple deliver tested software - It was used to, but I already had lots of problems installing the last OSX version, and now the iLife part of it is also behaving like another software/OS provider. I would not like both companies to look laike (that's why I still choose Apple...)
What should I do to make it work ? (please, if you have easy workarounds, not a tricky download of executables to be found in strange places !...) I just want to use iWeb in its simplest form, and I am surprised to be quite alone in this trouble (I have read that Internet Explorer was really bad at understanding iWeb pages, but in this case even Firefox collapses. Unfortunately the webbrowser standard is still IE or firefox (even if I like Safari, I have to comply with what is the most used in this (PC... ;-( ) world.)
Thanks alot if anyone can help, (or should I find iWeb06 : some discussions forums say it is... better than 08... and then where ?) Sorry for being so long, but details may be important)

Hi again (not been very active on the subject for some time).
I have found another thread in here that seems linked to my problem: I ain't got any number, but
you may find it looking at "IE crashing Iweb 08 blocking can be solved using Prototype 1.1.0" by balord.
It tells me : the "faulty" part is located in Iwebsite.js. It is filled by something called Prototype1.0.0
in iWeb 08, and apparently a solution could be to use a Prototype1.1.0, but up to now the description on how to fix it (changing lines within this .js) is not very clear to me. The link in there indicates a .js file, but it is far uncomprehensible, and I don't know which lines to remove, to change,...
I also tried Maestro (mentioned in the thread, but this does nothing at all (nothing !) : it only wipes out comments from the html code, and reduces images size (good enough to speed up loading, but not to clean garbage html, or js. I have found some websites that apprently are exactly the same as mine, but working (one from a model called sam nelemans... ok there should be others, but this one is the plain use of iWeb as I intended to do ... with less nude pictures !) even with IE. I shall be trying to dump her .js file, but I have to know how to do this (maybe using the activity window within Safari, not sure).
Another point : IE5 on Mac is also stuck. and if I removed the Iwebsite.js line in my html code, then even Safari is blocked as is IE. Probably it indicates that this is really the place where the bug (for me this is one) is located.
I'll try to keep you aware of progress if any. No news from Apple side (bug posted). now news, bad news...

  • Using iWeb 09 to create website for showreel and videos

    Hello,
I'm an independent film maker and I am looking to set up my own website to show my work on. Seeing how iWeb 09 finally allows you to publish your website to a host via FTP, I wondered if anyone could answer some questions for me - I have googled some stuff but have not come up with any satisfactory answers.
Okay, so basically I want a really simple website - incredibly simple in fact. All I want to do is have live streaming video (like the movie trailers on apples movie trailer website) for my own films. Of course, I want the videos to be of the highest quality (with some HD stuff as well). I have found a web host that offers unlimited web-space and bandwidth/traffic for a very cheap price each month, so is it simply a case of dragging a QT movie file into iWeb 09, publish it via FTP, and hey presto, people can view my films in high quality on the web? Is it really that simple or is there a catch?
Also, I may want to show some videos encoded with Flash, not QT. Is that still possible using iWeb 09?
Many, many thanks if you can clear up these queries for me, as I cannot seem to find any clear info anywhere else.
    George
P.S. I will be using FCP, not iMovie, to create and export films. Since they can both export QT files, I presume this will not be a problem?

George ~ Yes, there's a catch. Your videos will become part of iWeb's Domain file which may make it slow to open in iWeb, make backups and re-publish everything (if needed). Better to upload your videos separately to your server and embed them into your iWeb site.
iWeb '09 makes this easy if you upload your videos to YouTube: iWeb '09 has a new YouTube widget to embed your videos into your iWeb page:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb/#widgets
...For high definition video, YouTube was recently ranked the best of several video sites:
Which HD video Web service is the best?
    See also this article:
YouTube officially enables HQ in embedded videos
Also, I may want to show some videos encoded with Flash, not QT. Is that still possible using iWeb 09?
If you're concerned that some PC users won't have QT and won't want to install it, I think if you go the embedded YouTube route, almost all PC or Mac users will be able to view your videos — because "videos on YouTube are streamed through an Adobe Flash player."
If you'd prefer to use Flash in iWeb, this article may help:

  • Help with starting a new website

I am using iweb for the first time and trying to publish. I have put all info in on iweb settings and it says that it is working right, but I'm not seeing the website. It can't be found. So I have gone to my ftp server and it is showing it in the public_html area under cgi-bin where it's not suppose to go. Help

So I have gone to my ftp server and it is showing it in the public_html area under cgi-bin where it's not suppose to go. Help
Can't you just go back and move all the stuff out of cgi-bin? I can't imagine why iWeb would put it there in the first place unless some of the ftp settings were wrong. But you can also publish to a folder and use a separate ftp app like Cyberduck to make sure you upload things to the right place.

  • Using iWeb to make a website that uses a mysql database

    Hi there
i am trying to help out my friend. He has built a mysql database on his webserver, however he needs to create a page which allows him to filter and search through what is on the database.
at the moment he is trying to code the page himself but i am sure there is a program that he can use to create the user interface and link it to the mysql database, can iWEb do this?
or does anyone know of another website program that enables you to do this?

He will need to hand code it.
If you're intelligent enough to create a MySQL database in the first place, then you're clever enough to code the interface I highly doubt that there is any software that will help with only one part of it.

  • Iweb struggle to have website verified on google

    Hi
I designed my site with Iweb and it is histed with Mobileme. Domain Name was purchased at Godaddy.I just spent a few days already and about to get nuts... I tried adding a metatag, I tried uploading an html file but keep getting error messages from google. The one think that might be creating the problem is that when I try my url. my website reads as follow:
www.mydomain/mydomain/homepage... This extra folder I think is the problem. Can anyone help me figure it out?

In iWeb, does the first Site have the same name as your personal domain name ?
If so, you can change the name to Home or Portal or whatever is meaningful for you.
    As for the Google problem,
what are you trying ? Google Webmaster Tools or Google Analytics ?
In both cases your personal domain name should be enough.
    www.yourdomainname.xx(x)
    Kind regards,

  • Newby question.  Iweb not 'publishing' my websites properly anymore

    Hi,
Since I updated Iweb to the latest version (2.0.3), my website pages won't 'publish to folder' properly. Examples of problems I'm encountering include:
1)The dynamic menu bar located at the top of every page no longer shows up on published pages.
    2) My photo log page now shows up empty - no title, no text, and no photos. It now publishes, essentially, like a blank template.
    Please help!

    This should help!

  • Can I use iWeb to create a website with visitor purchasing options?

I'm wondering if it's possible to use iWeb to create and publish a website for a small business like mine where visitors to the site can select items and have the option to make credit card purchases from the site. Obviously all the security for online purchasing would need to be there also. Is iWeb capable of that or does Apple offer a different web page software that can do this?
Thanks to anyone who can help,

Welcome to the discussions. Not natively.
...or does Apple offer a different web page software that can do this?
As far as I know, Apple has no s/w offerings of that sort. Bear this in mind when considering e-commerce and the MobileMe Service:
“The Service is designed for personal individual use and is not intended to be used for commercial business purposes, including, but not limited to, transacting online sales or software distribution via an e-commerce site.”
...Quoted from the MobileMe Terms of Service. PayPal buttons can be inserted into iWeb pages via the HTML Snippet window — but you may want to consider more complete alternatives such as this:
    http://blog.weebly.com/2/post/2009/05/announcing-weebly-e-commerce-features.html
...You could hyperlink from iWeb to your "shop" there and there's even a way to hyperlink to it from iWeb's navigation bar.

  • Help: Iweb is distorted when viewed by PC users

I'm sure this must be addressed somewhere, but I don't know where. On my iweb blog, I put pictures with text underneath & everything looks fine on my mac. However if I (and others) look at the same pages using my PC, it's not aligned, words and images have shifted, etc.
    What's going on here?

    Hello,
It is possible to do rollovers and dropdowns, but unfortunately if you go beyond the beautiful but basic templates, you will have to use html. I have been visiting www.iwebfaq.org and http://web.mac.com/catucker/InsideOutside/iWeb.html quite a bit lately. These sites have walkthroughs and tips on using and going beyond the boundaries of iweb.
I have my own fairly basic website made with iweb if you have some spare time. mymusetellslies.com
It doesn't have any rollovers yet, but I'm not on a tight schedule. As for the problems in explorer or safari, there are some issues that are bugs in those problems and can't be worked around, but I found that many issues were resolved by keeping your boxes neat. For example, if you let a text box flow into another, that seems more likely to cause problems. The fix is simple: resize the boxes so they do not touch and that eliminates many problems.
As for the site map problem and google, that is a pain and problems stem from the navigation bar being java and not just regular links. I would recommend that you recreate the nav bar with text links to solve that problem. The two sites mentioned above go into details about that, and free or cheap programs that will help you build the site.
I personally wish Apple would buy up one of the smaller software companies like sandvox and make iweb pro, like the bought emagic to make logic pro. The ilife and iwork programs are fantastic, but it is a shame that some of the best computers for image work are not supported by the company that makes them in the web design arena, but adobe does have a **** tight lock on a lot of that world.

  • IWeb '08 gutted my website. Images are gone. No drop shadows. Ugly!

I updated to iWeb '08 after running the latest iWeb '08 software update. I am running a 24 in. Core2Duo iMac. After installing the update, I double-clicked on the Domain icon in my user/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and waited while the program converted my website that had been created with iWeb '06 and published to my .Mac account. Everything looked fine in iWeb. I added a graphic to a page and pressed the Publish button. After a long delay while the entire site was uploaded, I was able to visit my site and discovered that dozens of graphic elements were no longer visible. If the item is a hyperlink, the link still works, phantom-like, if I click on the spot where the item should be.
Also, there are no longer any drop shadows. Reflections still appear, however.
I ran some tests, creating page items by importing, dragging, copying and pasting, and creating shapes from the shape menu. The image items appeared normally in iWeb, but did not show up at all after publishing to the site. Shape primitives did appear online. Transparency, reflection, rotation all worked normally on the shapes, but drop shadows did not. The shadows appeared in the iWeb window, but disappeared when the page was published.
Please visit what's left of my site at www.peterweisz.com and see the damage for yourself. Fortunately, I have a back-up copy of my old iWeb 06 Domain file. Short of de-installing iWeb 08 and reinstalling iWeb 06, what can I do to remedy this problem? Evedently iWeb '08 is broken bigtime.
    Thank you for your help.

Can only endorse that. My observations with one of my iWeb sites:
Safari 3.0.4 (and previous betas): color management (?) - take a look at this site: http://shivaduo.jan-groh.de - Text and image frames were created with exactly the same web safe color (990033), but they differ a lot.
Firefox 2..., IE 6, Camino 1.5, Shiira: no shadows, (some) no reflections, (all) horizontally broken lines in reflections of frames, (Windows browsers) fonts (Trebuchet MS) get changed (worked perfectly before with iWeb 1... on exactly the same computer).
Is there any remedy to this aestheical disaster (iWeb 2 was the main reason for me to switch to iLife '08)?
I've already three bug reports to apple. They've made crap out of a fine little app...

  • IWeb and Google's Website Optimizer

I am interested in using Google's Website Optimizer to analyze which of my web pages get the most attention and are the most effective. I need to modify the HTML in my web pages and "add HTML tags" but I don't know how to do that or if that's possible in iWeb? Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks!

iWeb wont download. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you get a message when trying to publish your site or does the website not show the changes you've made.  If it is the latter clear your browser's cache (Command+Option+E for Safari) and reload the site.

  • IWeb keeps my old website no matter what

I have a website published via mobileme.  It lives only on one computer.  I have completely redone the website but when you search for it on Google, you can click on one of the search options & the old website comes up in its entirety.  That's wrong!  I did no renaming - I only recorded over the old pages with new ones but kept everything the same in the settings, etc.  I don't get it.  All the info is wrong on the old one but anyone can access it!
(Snow Leopard, latest version of iWeb)
    Help!

Okay, so what you actually need to understand is that iWeb has nothing to do with this - you just used iWeb to create the site and no, it does not just live on one computer - you said that you published your site to MobileMe so published is the optimum word here.
When you created your new site, did you keep the site name the same, did you keep all the page names the same?  If so, then when you published this site, it should have replaced your old site on MobileMe.
If you are having problems with this, then you can always log into your MobileMe account under System Preferences on your Mac and go directly to your iDisk where you site is actually published and delete that site from your Web/Sites folder there.
Go back into iWeb and re-publish your new site and if your old site has been deleted and your new site then has all the same page names and the same site name you should not have a problem.
If Google has indexed one site and you have published a new one, then it takes time for the spiders to crawl and index a new site - this does not happen overnight - you have to be patient.
