HELP! K8n Neo Platinum (7030) 2.10 Bios -- CPU overheating

AAAAAH Someone help me!!
I just downloaded the MSI Liveupdate program, and Updated my Bios from 1.7 to 2.10.
With Bios version 1.7 I was running my AMD 64 3200+ at solid 35-55 degrees (min to max)
Now with this new bios version, my CPU runs at 57-72 degrees (min-max) !!!!!!
HOLY CRAP -- this processor is not even rated to run at temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius!!
I'm in the danger zone as I type out this message to you guys, and I'm worried I'll reduce the shelf life of my processor.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME??? I've tried changing All the settings around in the bios, I've even set the processor down to about 1.8 ghz, and it's still running at temperatures above 55 degrees...
From what I understand there is no way of removing a bios flash, is that correct? Am I stuck with this crappy 2.10 bios flash?
What can I do? Please dear god... help me.

Ok answers to your questions:
My board is a MSI-7030 (K8N Neo Platinum) And Originally I flashed the bios from 1.7 to 2.1 Via Liveupdate (MSI Live Monitor & Live Update 3)
- I read your faq on how to manually rollback the bios, and i rolled back to version 1.9 (which I had never had before)
and that did not seem to work. My temp is still at 68-72 C -- even in the bios.
A few questions I need to ask now:
1) Is the next step is to revert back to 1.8? Then if that doesn't work, back to my original 1.7?
-- also, 2) Who is Syar? Where can I get his version of the bios? --
Finally: 3) What is the CMOS battery?  I know what the Jumper is, but I'm not sure what the battery is...
Is that the circular battery that's next to the BIOS Jumper? (maybe a picture would help..)
Thanks for all the responses so far! you guys are saving me from having a major emotional breakdown here.. I thought I was going to have to buy a new mobo.
I'll check back here on the forums in a few hours to see if anyone has responded,
(p.s. TY SO MUCH for caring enough to help a fellow hardware enthusiast!!!  )

What about the latest BIOS 2.1 K8N Neo Platinum (7030) ? Is it safe to upgrade or should i stay at 1.7 (that really works great) ?

If 1.7 is working for you I'd suggest staying with it. (Always a good idea even if the new bios is stable).
I had problems overclocking with V2.1 (the ide initialisation hangs) and many others have complained about problems with more than one stick of mem.

  • K8N Neo Platinum 7030 Problem

I have a K8N Neo Platinum and as of the past week my computer has been acting really strange.  I has had random lockups that at first made me think it was the video card.  That wasn't the case.  I tried a different power supply and that didnt help.  So I decided to take everything out of my computer.  I had everything unplugged from the motherboard power, ide cables, etc.  I noticed as I was taking everything out that I felt like I was getting shocked by my case but I don't know how because I had no power supply in my computer and all the cards, processor, memory were taken out.  When I took the mb out i didn't feel the shock anymore, but when I put the mb back in the case and hooked the power supply back up to it I did.  I even vacuumed out the case totally removing all dust and dirt.  Am I missing something here?  HELP lol

thanks for replying glenn after 2 days of hunting i can now say
90% sure the whining is from the powersupply
using my advanced hearing device i found a flaw in its design.  before i would put it near psu but not hear the whine from there. well it occured to me to tilt it ever so slightly (tip from radio broacasting in college) to let the noise in but block any wind from crossing the end of my tube. and ch ching finally from the rear of the psu is where it is loudest.
ive owned 3 enermax and theyve been the best psu ive ever owned.  but this weekend im swap it with my other and see if it still happens. it will probably take 2 hours total do it which is why ive put it off this long. ive tried bumping the wires around even though its a full size chieftech with all my watercooling gear its almost impossible to not have the wires overlap each other at least a few times. but with the moving around i did do it didnt help.

  • K8n Neo Platinum Freezes While in BIOS Cell Menu

I have been trying to fix a reboot problem with my new K8N Neo2 Platinum system (see separate post if interested in details). Someone suggested I change HT value in Cell menu in the BIOS from 5x to 4x.  I had not tried to access this item before.  Well, when I pressed "ENTER" while the HT line was highlighted, I got an outline of a text box that should have have had values in it I suppose but iin fact it had no text at all.  Furthermore, the BIOS screen was frozen and I was unable to continue without pressing ALT+CTRL+DEL.  The system restarted and I entered the BIOS again, went to the HT line in the Cell menu and the system froze again when I tried to edit the HT value.  (The BIOS is v 1.4).  I presume this means that the MB is defective.
Also, I cannot use the F10 key while in BIOS menu to "Save and Exit" as I could with my previous A2N MB.  Has anyone else noticed this?
Any help and/or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!  I was able to change the HT setting but unfortunately it did not solve my power-on-after-soft-reboot problem.

  • No power on Socket 754 K8N Neo Platinum 7030-010

    Hi, all -
I've stripped the system down to just:
    Neo Platinum part MSI-7030-010
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (Socket 754) - retail, so original AMD HSF
512MB Corsair XMS PC3200 - half of an original 1gb TwinX pair
Dual 74gb WD Raptors in Raid 0, but tested with them detached.
Lite-on DVD burner (I misremember the model), but tested with it detached.
MSI Fx5500 AGP vid card, but tested with it pulled out.
    No overclocking at all.
Standard PS2 Mouse and KB, though I also yanked those and tested with no better results.
This is sitting in a case that came with a QMax 330W psu:
    +3.3 - 28A
    +5 - 35A
    +12 - 16A
    +5VSB - 2A
    -5V - 0.3A
    -12V - 0.8A
    "+5/+3.3 total 200W max"
    "+5/+3.3/+12 total 330W max"
The whole system has been working juuuust fine since last August.
I built the rig for a friend, so here's their story - it suddenly started making a funny noise (thought to be PSU?) and the top of the case (above the PSU) was hot to the touch. Powered down and went to dinner. Later, it will not power up. You push the button, and there's NOTHING. No clicks, no temporary fan whirs, nothing. You could hear a pin drop.
I tested the PSU as far as starting it up, and it does start, but I don't have the equipment to test it for voltages. I tested the mobo as far as shorting out the power switch jumper with a screwdriver, and NOTHING. I also plugged in another psu that I had sitting around, with the same results.  I was able to get the 2nd PSU to start while still plugged into the mobo, and the "D-Link 2" LEDs start at 4 red, and stay at 4 red.
My biggest clue is that manually shorting the power switch jumper on the mobo does nothing. I have entered an RMA request to MSI, but if anyone else has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
    Thanks!
    Rob

    Thanks for the resource!
Two others I've read claim that I need no more than 300W under full load. I'll have them replace the PSU anyway.
MSI approved the mobo RMA, though, and I just disassembled the machine. Turns out that the stock AMD HSF - the one that came with the CPU - which I attached with the heatsink goo that came with the CPU - has cemented itself to the CPU. I "gently" pried the hsf out of the socket and it took the CPU with it!
I can't get the CPU off of the heatsink without some serious work.
Has anyone run into THAT one before?

  • Severe Problems with BIOS v1.9 for K8N Neo Platinum (7030)

I updated to the new BIOS and nothing but crashes, so I tried to go back to 1.7, because everything was working fine with 1.7 and now, the BIOS is asking for a password, and I never setup a password in the BIOS. What the heck, now I have a $1000 (US) paper weight, thanks alot for the buggy BIOS update, now you can send me a new motherboard!!!
**Edit** Well I found a work around, went back to BIOS 1.5 for now until I can get 1.7 to work again, 1.8 and 1.9 are screwed up beyond belief, you can't set any overclocking features, RAM timings are messed, there is no choice for 1T/2T, currently I'm running at SPD on the DRAM and stock on all the CPU functions. I would really like if someone could test these BIOS versions before putting them up so stupid people like me update them. Also, leaving more choices than one BIOS update in MSI LiveUpdate would be nice, because flashing via the floppy drive is a pain in the butt, lucky I have an extra computer to use.**End Edit**

Do a floppy drive flash with the correct switches.  Go back to the last bios that worked properly or try Pinochio's bios which a lot of people like.  Liveupdate will mess up your bios.  So can winflash if you do not use it correctly.

After you have read about it, do this using the correct flash utilty file name and the correct  bios file name
"DOS floppy flash shall be performed with :
    awfl833d.exe w7030nms.180 /py /sn /wb /cc /cd /cp /f /e
(Replace biosfilename with appropriate version for Neo1/neo2 etc , switches remain the same )
    After flash is complete :
TURN OFF PSU (don't restart) wait 15 seconds
Turn on again , press the power button .
Enter BIOS and load optimized defaults (NO OTHER CHANGES) , save + exit
Boot the system again with the floppy in the drive to let the DMI pool build and update itself .
    Good luck.

  • Neo Platinum [7030] 2.1 BIOS - My Experience

Hi, well hindsight is a wonderful thing.  On saturday after giving mp pc a good clean I decided to update the BIOS from 1.7 to 2.1, I read all the guides and followed them to the letter.
The flash went fine using winflash, I always have upto now used a floppy based method.
The new BIOS reported my temperatures a good 10 degrees centigrade above what they were, so I thought, sod this I'll go back to 1.7.
Uh-Oh, the reflash was going very slowly and finally stopped with an error about file integrity or something.  Then, like the idiot I am [sometimes] I decided to re-boot to try to flash from the floppy.
No chance, pc came on and shut down after about 5-8 seconds, not even getting to the floppy stage.
So, I spent several hours on my old dell pc trawling these forums and eventually seeing very similar reports, if only I'd looked first.
I tried every single trick on offer, removed all non essential components, clearing cmos about a billion times, removing the battery for hours etc.. no joy.
Decided thr BIOS was a gonner I ordered a new chip and uploaded the 1.7 bios I'd saved to www.recoverybios.com in Italy, thinking it would be weeks before anything happened.  This was on Saturday night.
The good news is the BIOS chip turned up this morning, all fitted and working very nicely
What a fantastic service from them, top marks.
    Feel free to ridicule me
I think I shall be paying closer attention to these forums again, I kinda drifted away before.
    Question:
I happen to have a NEO2 [7025] board coming shortly, what is the best BIOS for this at the moment? I won't be overclocking, just stabililty needed.

  • K8N Neo Platinum 7030 blue screening/loading to black

    Running: athlon64 3200+, 1x 512mb crucial 333 1x 256mb crucial 333, nvidia gforce 6800
My computer worked fine for many months, and even though I didn't install anything recently, it started freezing and blue screening, then loading to a black screen.  The first time it happened I was playing a video game, then I restarted and it did it again when I was playing the video game.  After a day or two it stopped loading to black screen, and it loaded successfully.  But whenever I tried to play a game it blue screened.
Then I reformatted, and when I was re-installing norton, it blue screened again, then it loaded to a black screen again.
Thanks for your help in advance

It would help to know a little more about your system setup, however I would agree that you should try memtest first.  You should also try to get another 512MB stick to match your other one.  Generally (from what I've learned and heard) RAM likes to be matched in pairs that are as identical as possible.  One of my other thoughts is maybe your HD is overheating?  Feel your HD when your systems starts bluescreening.  If it feels kind of hot to the touch (like fairly hot compared to your processor) then that could be a problem.  My HDs were overheating and I could never figure out why my computer kept crashing until I felt the HDs, moved them to a better position, and placed a fan in front of them.  Also, do you have all of the latest drivers for your equipment?  Check your event log and see if it tells you whether the error was from a driver.  If it is from a driver, then just uninstall the piece of hardware and reinstall the latest drivers.
Those are my first thoughts.  Good Luck.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum (7030) issues with new CPU

I was running a 3000(754).  It was running just fine, I decided to swap in a 3700.  I can't get to post or anything.  Everything comes on(fans, lights ect...).  I can put back in my 3000 and it works fine.  I have updated the bios.  Is this CPU supported?  Or is it a dead cpu?  Thanks for the help.

Sorry for the lack of info, I have updated my sig.  Please let me know if any other info is needed.  Does moving the jumpers clear the Bios or the CMOS?  I have done that.  I will take the battery out tonight and see if that works.
don't forgot to remove power cord from the PSU before Clear CMOS.
provide full details about your newest CPU which you are tying to install.
check for bent CPU pins too.

  • Memory Corruption on K8N Neo Platinum - HELP!

I am having some problems with my cousin’s computer that I built for her last September.  She brought me the computer because she got an error that the system32/config/system file was corrupted and couldn’t boot the computer.  I got the file replaced and got the computer re-updated to where it worked.  Then the same thing happened again.  This time I did a Windows reinstall and the computer acted a little sluggish and iffy so I did a memory test.  I found the memory was all corrupted.
First here are the pc specs:
MSI K8N Neo Platinum with 1.7 bios
    Athlon 64 3000+
    120GB Seagate SATA hard drive
NEC DVD Burner and Samsung DVD ROM
    Radeon 9550
    512MB Corsair Value Select 2.5CL DDR400
Antec 350W psu and Antec Case
I ran Memtest86+ v1.6 and the Corsair stick had errors in Test 3, 4, 5, and 7.  In tests 3 and 4 there are 50 errors but at the 98% of Test 5, the errors jumped to 146,432 and they were 500.8MB part of the stick.  I got the same results when I moved it to DIMM2 slot.  I also get the same results when the HT is at 1x or 4x.
I tried a known working 512MB stick from my sisters Athlon XP 2500+ pc in the A64 pc.  It is a Mushkin PC3200 Basic stick.  I get errors only at 98% of Test 5 which amounts to 109,568 errors.  Same results in DIMM2 slot.
But when I test the Mushkin in my sisters pc, it has no errors.  But the Corsair stick in the AXP pc gets errors on Tests 1, 3, 4, 5 (only at the 98% mark), 6, 7, 8 but only a total of 317 (a lot less than 146,000 in the A64 pc.)
So, I know the Corsair memory is bad, but now something is also wrong with the motherboard and /or cpu right?
If you need any more info let me know.  I’m new to the forums and they look very helpful.
    Thanks.

Look in the bios and loosen up the RAM settings. Make sure the RAM isn't being stressed into settings that are too hard for it to handle.
See I told you to loosen it up...
I speak from experience as the same happened to me and loosening settings stopped errors.
Glad you managed it, well done...

  • K8n Neo Platinum non-booting SATA RAID setup question

I've spent several hours searching an reading trying to find out how to setup a non-bootable SATA RAID. All I can seem to find are posts about bootable installs using F6 and the drivers on a floppy.
I have setup the disks in the bios an defined the array an everything checks out. But when I boot back to WindowsXP it only sees 2 drives that it cannot find drivers for even if I point it to the correct Nvidia directory. I attempted to just reinstall the drivers but that caused a Bluescreen from a corrupt driver file that I then had to go into the repair console to copy from a floppy.
The manual an a couple of posts here say that I should go into Admin Tools-> Disk Management an it will then popup a wizard. But I'm not getting that far.
I currently have the disks on SATA 1 and 2 but will move them tonite because I've read its better for them to be on 3 and 4.
This is on a K8N Neo Platinum 7030 on Windows XP SP2.  If anyone could help or just point me to where I can find help it would be greatly appreciated.

When the raid controller is enabled in bios and you start windows you can install the nvidia raid driver
    from within windows .
Use the add hardware wizard from control panel .
    Start the add-hw wizard .
Yes i have connected the hw - next .
Add a new hw device (bottom of the list ) -next .
Install the hw that i select manually from a list - next .
    Select scsi/raid controller - next .
    Choose have disk .
Then browse for the location of the nvraid.inf file

I have a Lite on LDW 411s dvd writer that is on the same ide channel as a lite on dvd player (labled as JLMS SJ-HD1665 in the device manager.
The problem is on the 411S where it will read the DVD/CD disk but when I try to use Cyberlink PowerDVD or Nero Recode to play or read the DVD it will just hang.  If I don't try to play these files and just open them in explorer then I can access them.
I'm trying to see if there are some conflict issues with the nforce drivers but am still looking.
    My setup is this.
    AMD 64 3000+
    K8n Neo Platinum nforce 3 250 Bios 1.4
    Western Digital 120 gb hd

Also to note I can play DVDs and use recode fine off the DVD rom drive but just not off the DVD writer (411s).

You might have better luck making the reader the slave on the channel your HD is on. I had both a burner/writer on the same channel and while it worked, the performance was very poor.
Man, I need to get around to posting my specs someday, but I have the same MB and BIOS as you. I'm also using the nForce unified drivers including IDE.

  • K8N Neo Platinum, NO POST

    I have 2 known good Athlon 64 3400+ CPUs.
    CPU#1 is a ClawHammer SH7-C0
    CPU#2 is a NewCastle DH7-CG
    The problem is as follows:
CPU#1 works and is stable on the board, (MSI K8N Neo Platinum, 7030)
CPU#2 will not POST on the same board, D-Bracket gives all reds except from #3, according to the manual this is 'Initializing Keyboard Controller'.
And the speaker gives 1 long beep, follow by a pause (Indicating RAM error, RAM is known good, and tried with different sticks too)
Since CPU#1 worked on the board, i figured CPU#2 must be broked, so i RMA it, and it returned with 'No errors'.
I have tried most everything known to man:
    Reseat the CPU, RAM, *
Boot with the board out of the case
    Update bios (Have latest, 1.6)
Reset bios by JBAT and remove battery
    New and different RAM
You name it, i've tried it.
Except for RMA the board, could the board really be broked? It works with the ClawHammer...
    I'm going nuts.

I've got the same motherboard running with a Newcastle. The only difference between you Newcastle and Clawhammer would be the level 2 cache. That isn't going to have any effect on the cpu working in your system. You cleared the bios so the bios should automatically detect the level 2 cache on the new cpu. I use bios 1.5 on mine. The 1.6 bios is very new. It is only supposed to effect cpu identification, but with a new bios who knows. Did you try the 1.5 bios that's been out a while and is well tested? I don't believe it's the motherboard or it wouldn't work with the clawhammer. Who tested that Newcastle and said it was good? I wonder if they really tested it in a live system? Bad cpu gets my bet.
