Help Keep Laptop from Being Stolen

What are other organizations (probably mainly schools) doing to help keep their laptops from walking off.
Are you doing any physical modifications to the case? Engraving, a certain type of paint... Are you using any software security, undercover or other phoning home applications...?
Are you using more advanced security on your top assets? Like an alarm when it goes out of a certain area?
And idea's would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I have used iAlertU on my computer as just something for fun. It works great, but in our case, we're mainly looking to protect computers (laptops) that are in carts. They will be closed and will be moved around in the building or in the room while in the carts so it has to work with that.
We did just recently buy some copies of Undercover. Out main weakness there is that we currently have manually assigned IPs instead of DHCP (not my idea), so as soon as they take the computer out of the district, it's off the network. The only hope would be if they plug a network cable into the computer.
Does anybody know if Undercover is the best at that part of the job? Any other idea's?

A better solution is if your email provider uses IMAP. IMAP sync email folders between multiple devices. Meaning any device will receive the email, all sent email can be seen on the devices. If you delete email from one device the email is deleted from all the other devices. Check with your email provider to see if they offer IMAP services.
If they do not your choices are to 1) configure email on the PC to keep Mail on the mail server or 2) change email providers to something like Gmail or Outlook.com (as examples). FWIW I use Cox IMAP email and fully sync email between a Win 8.1 Update 1 laptop, a Win 7 desktop, an iPad 4, an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5S.

Keeping photos from being deleted from folders

I am wondering if there is a way to keep photos from being deleted from a folder if they're deleted from the library, like some kind of safeguard. Here is my dilema: I import, say, 50 photos from shooting a band. I choose 5 of those 50 to add to my 'portfolio' album, and no longer need all 50 photos in my library, as they take up much space. So, I select all 50 photos as a group in the library and delete them, but lose the 5 that I put in the 'portfolio' folder. Is there any better way to clean up my library, and not lose the portfolio pictures, short of going one by one and deleting only the ones from the library that I know I don't want to keep? Any imput is greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

The albums only point to the photos within them, meaning if you delete from the library you are also deleting any of those photos from the album also.
If you take these 50 photos in a photo shoot, do your deleting first then put the remainder in an album. To help you, you can give the photos you want to keep a star rating. When you are done, select all as a group, then command click on the photos with the star rating to de-select just those, then delete the rest.

Keeping Quicktime from being the default media player

My son has iTunes/Quicktime installed on this computer, but I do not want Quicktime to be the default media player. How do I keep it from being the default media player.

Try just right-clicking on the link to the downloaded file. In most browsers you'll get some variant of a command to download the file to your computer. That would bypass the QuickTime browser plugin.

I think itunes should have a password in order to access the phone anyways. also is apple going to use landscape mode anymore. it seems like more and more apps are fading away form this but i have big hands and landscape mode is a lot more comfortable in my hands. Change your Apple ID in Settings/Messages, certainly. As he is your ex I would also get a new Apple ID for purchases, although this will mean you will have to buy any apps purchased using his Apple ID all over again.

By default the photos will be sorted by the date modified.

I don't get a pop-up. Something triggers the Reader installer to be loaded on my system. This occurs without my knowledge. Then, the next time i go to open a PDF, instead of it opening immediately with Acrobat Pro, I get the first screen of the installation stuff for Reader (Accept/Decline Terms of use, etc.). At this point, i get out of the install, go into control panel and uninstall Reader (which is listed as a loaded program, even though i haven't finished the install). After i uninstall reader and open a PDF, it opens correctly with Acrobat Pro. This happens once or twice a month at least. Is it possible that the Adobe Acrobat Update Service task loads Reader on my system at some interval? How do i block Reader form EVER being installed or loaded?

I'm using Entourage 2008 (and now Outlook 2011) to store thousands of emails. I was having a problem where my Time Machine was super-slow because it was always "waiting for index". I finally was able to track it down (using fs_usage | grep getattrlist, suggested by a kind Apple Discussions member) to the fact that my Spotlight was extremely busy constantly updating the Microsoft User Identity folder. After adding it to Spotlight's exclusion list, the TM was working great. However, with that folder excluded from Spotlight, I can't search for emails in Outlook anymore! Anyone have any ideas - how is this to be avoided? How do people with large email databases (Exchange server access) use TM and Spotlight together? Any way to keep Spotlight's mds process (or whatever else it needs) more responsive to TM and spend less time constantly re-indexing the email folders?

After excluding Entourage user identities folders from Spotlight but leaving the Outlook identities, and letting Spotlight finish indexing them, the fs_usage no longer shows a very busy getattr process but still the TM is slow again and top shows

How to keep links from being broken when moved or file is later split

Which is the best way to make sure that a link to another pdf file is not broken when a file is emailed or moved to a new location off of the server? Should you link a destination or use the hyperlink feature?
If the links are created and the file then has to be split, will the links be retained in the split files?

PDF#1 has a link to PDF#2. To keep this link functional after putting PDF#1 elsewhere:
--| Relocate PDF#2 with PDF#1; maintaining the same path to the target of the link (which is PDF#2).
--| Or, use Acroat's link tool to modify the link in PDF#1 so that you establish a functional path to wherever PDF#2 is at.
For email, if PDF#1 & PDF#2 are adjacent to one another under some folder/directory & then linked you'd want to email both files together. Both PDFs can be saved &, provided they stay adjacent, the links will work.
PDF split —
PDF#3 has internal links (e.g., a link from PDF page 1 to some other PDF page in PDF#3).
You split PDF#3 by extracting the first 5 PDF pages & now have PDF#4.
Any links in PDF#4, to PDF#3 pages past page 5 will not function.
Use Acrobat's Link tool to modify the link such that it goes from PDF#4 to the desired page in PDF#4.
n.b., There are 3rd party plug-ins for Acrobat that can facilitate bookmark and link management.

How to easily force Mail to keep attachments from being inline?

Attachments sent from Mail are being viewed inline in Gmail. I'd prefer they be viewed as attachments. The attachments in question are small (windows-friendly) attachments. Also, the message header in gmail indicates that Mail is forcing them inline (Content-Disposition: inline;). This issue seems to have begun after upgrading to OS X 10.6.7.
Any ideas?

There is nothing new in this regard with 10.6.7 -- it has been more or less the same concept from 10.1 forward -- the attachments that View in Place as you Compose are in fact true attachments, Inline header notwithstanding.
Whether they view Inline for the recipient is controlled by the recipient's email app. Most modern ones would have them View in Place or Inline view regardless of the header.
I am not sure what you mean by how they are viewed in Gmail, as I cannot determine whether you mean a Gmail account in some email client like Mail or Outlook, or when viewing via web mail and a browser.
With all attachments, it is best to place them at the end of the message -- there is a setting in Mail to do that automatically -- and to send to most recipients in a Plain Text message.

Apple will not "track it down". Contact your local law enforcement agency and report it to them. You'll want to have your serial number for that.

You do not HAVE to put a © symbol on each photo. If you own the photos, you hold the copyright. However, nothing stops a viewer from downloading the photo and using it without your permission.
To protect yourself there are alternatives: put a ©2013 by ME in the description of each photo. Always add your copyright notice to the metadata in every photo.
