Help! Kernel panic whenever I plug in my new 2TB WD My Passport

Hello everyone,
I have a 27 inch iMac that is still under AppleCare. When I plug in my 2 TB WD My Passport external drive, I get the screen that says, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." When the computer restarts, if I don't eject the drive fast enough it will display the same message. I have no other problems with connecting external devices. I have even tried a friend's 1TB WD Passport external drive and it worked perfectly fine. Does anyone know what could be causing this?  I have copied the kernel panic from the system diagnostic report below. Thanks in advance!

Does the drive itself come with pre-installed software? I'm seeing "WD’s automatic, continuous backup software works quietly in the background to help protect your data using minimal PC resources. Whenever you add or change a file, it’s instantly backed up."
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=640
If it's not that, then it might be something in the chipset of the WD external enclosure that doesn't play well with the Mac.
If you look around in Sys Prefs>Login Items, anything there from WD? Also look in /Library/Startup Items and there and in /System/Library/ for Launch Daemons or Launch Agents.
Get FindAnyFile and enter "WD" Hold down Option(alt) when hitting Find.

  • Keep getting KERNEL PANICS when I plug in my external hard drives!  HELP!

Kernel panics started happening this week.  Figured out that it was caused by my external hard drives.  I have four external G-DRIVES (three 2TB, one 4TB) and one LACIE 2TB BIG DISK.  The 4TB G-DRIVE is my TIME MACHINE drive.
Did some trouble shooting and nomatter which external is plugged in, the OS panics after about 5mins.  Been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to do.
Anyone run into this before?  Thanks,
    Stan

  • Kernel Panic Whenever RAID Array is Connected

I have a couple of mirrored 1TB drives set up on my iMac with Disk Utility. I had unplugged all of my drive during the install, so I plugged them back in and my iMac kernel panicked. I have 5 drives, and I finally narrowed it down to either of the RAID drives. I also connected one of them to my MacBook Pro 17", same exact thing happened. I am totally clueless as to what caused this. For the time being I have downgraded another one of my systems to the most recent version of Leopard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the exact same problem with 2 x 1TB IOmega USB drives.
These drives have been working perfectly under Leopard, with software RAID1 (Disk Utility)
Now after upgrading to Snow Leopard, my machine gives me a kernel panic.
I've tried on both an old 1.6 ghz Core Duo mini, and a fairly new 2ghz mini (july 2009)
Both result in the same error, something like this :

  • Help, Kernel Panic transferring HD to new Intel Imac

My Imac 500 has a Kernel Panic error and I will need to get my files to my new Imac Intel. Can I do this without resolving the Kernel Panic error? Will my Intel Imac see the HD on my Imac 500 while it is in this error mode?
    Any help is appreciated.

You should be able to use the Migration Assistant to move your user account to the new computer as long as there is no problem with the old computer's disk drive.
Shut both computers off and connect them via a Firewire cable. Boot the old machine into Target Disk Mode. After the TDM logo appears boot the new computer normally. The old computer's disk drive should appear on the new computer's Desktop. Open Migration Assistant (Utilities folder) on the new computer and use it to transfer your user account to the new computer.

  • Kernel panics whenever RAID card conditions battery

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running 10.5.8, with an Apple RAID card with M-2.0.5.5 firmware. This has two Seagate Barracuda drives attached, formatted as RAID 0, and this RAID 0 is the OS drive.
Periodically, the RAID card conditions the battery. In the past I've been able to work while this was happening but, about three weeks ago, the conditioning started and the computer became completely unusable: there were kernel panics every minute or two and, on restarting, the report showed "AppleRAIDCard Controller Panic...". I eventually gave up and left it alone until the conditioning finished, and it's worked fine since.
This situation has just started again. It's only three weeks since the last conditioning; the gap was 6 weeks last time; and 12 weeks the time before that. Is the battery failing? Does that explain the constant AppleRAIDCard Controller-initiated kernel panics?
I didn't set up this computer and could happily live without RAID but this OS drive now has lots of software installed, much of which needed to be authorised by challenges/responses and explanations to software manufacturers as to why it was being reinstalled etc. Reformatting and reinstalling everything again would be a major PITA.
Is it possible to move the drives to a software RAID 0 without reformatting them? Is this likely to be less problematic than the Apple RAID card?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve = : ^ )

I'd just like someone to comment on whether they think the battery alone could be responsible for unending KPs whenever the controller is conditioning the battery, or whether the card might be faulty.
    I wonder about both points.
Did some searching, and there are several reports of other users with battery problems.
For some, the battery fixed the problem, for others, no remedy.
    One example:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=439873
For troubleshooting, identifying the source through eliminating causes related to the symptoms would be a reasonable approach.
Since the KP's occur only during battery conditioning, it places the most suspicion on the battery.
Personally, I see this as most telling.
Since you can't run without the battery, a replacement is the only way that I can think of to test the battery.
Other possibilities could be firmware related.
Is the card and the MP running the most current firmware?
If the firmware of the card and the MP are up to date, the battery, again, comes to the top of the suspect list.
And, of course, there is always the possibility that a component on card has failed.
Unfortunately, as with the battery, a replacement is needed to test.
I wouldn't move on this point until the battery theory were tested.
Not to dismiss the potential for software involvement, I'm wondering what are the OS X kexts that are involved with the processes leading to the KP's?
Logs in Console may provide some information.
Portions of the KP report immediately after the word "backtrace" also provide the best information.

  • I experience a kernel panic whenever I close firefox and have to hard reboot my machine.

I am running Mac OS X 10.7.4 and Firefox 15.0.1 on a Macbook Pro 9,1. Almost every time I close firefox, the computer freezes completely and/or has a kernel panic, and in all situations I have to hard-reboot the machine. I've tried uninstalling other 3rd party apps and have sourced the problem to firefox. When I view the system report of the crash after rebooting, it says that the source of the crash was from a firefox process and something related to Nvidia Geforce. I was wondering if this may be related to the graphics switching on the new macbooks (I have a intel 4000 + a Nvidia 650m), however, I still get crashes when I turn off automatic graphics switching. My other thought was perhaps this problem has to do with hardware acceleration. Unfortunately, I tried disabling hardware acceleration in firefox and it still caused the computer to crash.
I'm happy to hear any suggestions! I don't want to have to switch to another browser, but using firefox 15 in its current state has made my computer unstable and unusable.

Which is it, hanging or crashing, or both?

  • Kernel Panic Message...Caused by new RAM???

Hey guys, just purchased 2x1gb ram from otherworldcomputing.com for my powerbook G4, im currently running the latest version I can possibly run which is 10.5.8  Everything seemed great when I put the RAM in, seemed like my computer was running pretty fast campared to the 512gb that came with the computer.  All of a sudden, while im searching the web, it throws that kernel panic message up at me.  I restarted and a few minutes later while im still on the web, bam, the same message.
I am currently in safe mode while Im writing this and nothing has happened yet(update:a few mintues after I finished typing this thread I received the same message, I have turned the computer off and jumped on my wiftes computer to type this I am thinking about putting the original 512mg ram back in to see if I get the message again)
Wierd, the first few days witht the new RAM everything seemed fine and then all of a sudden I got those messages.  I have never had the problem ever before so it makes sense that its gotta be the new RAM right?  Here are my specs

To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Larch 5.3. Kernel panic in produced live media with new mkinitcpio 0.6

After updating to new mkinitcpio 0.6.x, any Larch 5.3 live media produced, does not boot, but hangs in a kernel panic.
Perhaps gradgrind, you should have a look at it.

I don't think I'll have time to look after fixing larch-5 any more. If anyone is desperate to keep this branch alive, please contribute code!
My next priority will be to get larch-7 working with the new mkinitcpio.

not sure of the terminology is correct, but the faded gray screen with the black "you must restart" warning box pops up when i plug/unplug my PB. it's on it's 2nd replacement logic board... time for a 3rd? or software?...

anyone? i'm becoming a regular at the genius bar (2nd LB replacement in 2 weeks) and would love not to repeat the process...

  • Whenever i plug in my new iPhone 4 to my itunes, it does a bunch of steps to back up my iPhone and then tells me there isnt enough accses privlidges to sync this iPhone. what does this mean, nd how do i fix it?

I had used this itunes with my ipod nano before.

Depending on what OS you are using on the computer and your profile says Windows 7, you need to have Administrative priviledges to do some things. If you have Admin priviledges and have restarted the computer and are still having issues, you might want to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it. It will not delete your music library, but you need to follow the instructions found in this support document to be sure to get everything out.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Then resinstall and see if that helps.

  • Kernel panic by mini-diplay port caused by 10.8.5 security update 2015-001 10.8.5

After updating Mountain Lion (10.8.5) with Security update 2015-001, my 2008 15" MacBook Pro suffered kernel panic whenever I plugged in a mini-display port to HDMI cable.  The issue resolved by reverting to the immediate previous backup, which had Security Update 2014-005 as its most recent update..  I verified that update 2015-001 was the problem by installing in on an archived clean system (10.8.5) which also had Security Update 2014-005 as its most recent update.
Here is a capture of the kernel panic:

My macbook often kernel panic, if i plug hardisk external . can you help me for solve this problem ?

    Resolving Kernel Panics
Could be the case or cable - try a different cable.
If you are trying to use it with USB,  do you have a different interface to use like Firewire?
When you do have panic, you also have left your internal system with corrupt directory that now needs to be repaired.  Making and adding more problems.
Try boot  from OS X DVD and repair your system - go to Utilty menu => Disk Utility: Repair disk drive
    Get your system working. first.
Do you have backup from before this started? when or how did it begin?
What has happened to your external? able to repair the drive?
do you have a backup for it?
How is it formatted? what is it used for? TimeMachine? PC and Windows? other?

  • ESATA Kernel Panics in Safari 5.1.7 (OSX 10.7.4)

I'm experiencing kernel panics whenever attempting to load drives using the browser-based interface for the HighPoint Technologies RocketRAID Quad eSATA 6 Gbit/s for Mac controller. This began occurring immediately after updating to Safari 5.1.7 (OSX v10.7.4).
All my eSATA peripherals are therefore completely unusable. Rather than using Time Machine to back up to the last update, has anyone got a workaround? Either using Terminal or Firefox or something else? IE?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Update: Safari 5.1.7 seems to be causing the problem. Firefox 11 is not causing kernel panics.

  • MacBook pro 8,2 late-2011 after series of kernel panics and video glitches stopped booting

Hello, friends... I am shattered, my MacBook Pro stopped booting today. It all started two days ago, when I came to India and got USB modem dongle from Tata Docomo. It was making Lion kernel panic whenever it was connected to Internet, but had no effect while disconnected or unplugged from the laptop. Then yesterday I had a kernel panic while playing a video in VLC, then while using Skype, and after a while I figured out the pattern, it would crash every time computer switched on the graphic card instead of the on-board CPU graphics. It would also crash with striped blue screen and misplace it horizontally. All this time I was looking for the solution on the internet, and ran two hardware tests, both normal and extended, both showed no issues, tried booting into safe mode getting the striped blue kernel panic screen after the progress bar filled. Resetting the ram also didn't help. Now it will not boot at all, only the hardware test is still working. After the logo screen in normal mode it just goes power off or hangs in grey screen for infinity.
Please, I need your help guys, I'm desperate, went to India for a few months and laptop breaking down almost straight away, and I'm also a dj, so its like a musical instrument to me, that I cannot work without...
Again - MacBook Pro 8,2 Late-2011, 2,4 ghz, 750gb hdd, 4gb ram, ati 1gb graphic card and running Lion 10.7.3, thanks!

  • Kernel Panics and other errors

Ok here's the deal. I was having a lot of problems with my MacBook Pro and reinstalling Leopard did nothing to help, so I took it to the Apple store near me and checked it in. A couple of weeks later I got it back with a new logic board, new hard drive, and new hard drive cable. Since then I've been having kernel panics every now and then. The only time it happens regularly is when I try to do a directory repair with DiskWarrior on my external Firewire drive running 10.5.3.
The FW drive's panic log refers to a simple lock deadlock detection caused by com.alsoft.Preview. A Safe Boot fixes the issue, which would point to a conflicting kext or login item or something like that. What I can't figure out is why it worked perfectly before my laptop was repaired, and now consistently causes a kernel panic whenever I run it. Nothing on the external drive has changed since then, so I'd have to assume the hardware change would be the problem. But then why would a Safe Boot solve the problem? Maybe a driver or something that isn't being loaded in Safe Mode but normally is encountering an error due to bad hardware?
I also have two other panic logs from my internal hard drive. The first is a kernel trap, also caused by com.alsoft.Preview. I'm not sure why it was stored on the internal hard drive's Logs folder since I only run DiskWarrior from my FW drive (it's not even installed on the internal drive), but I digress. The other panic was caused by an "IOGMD: not wired for the IODMACommand" error. Apparently the error had to do with a few USB-related drivers and IOKits, namely IOUSBMassStorageClass, AppleUSBEHCI, and IOUSBFamily. I've been having some weird issues with my USB flash drive lately, mostly file transfers going incredibly slow (like 300 KB/sec slow). I haven't been having these issues on any other computer, and I've even verified the flash drive with Disk Utility, so I would have to say the problem is with the Mac and not the drive itself.
Now for the other errors. I've been getting Disk Too Slow errors in GarageBand when recording guitar tracks (which I've never gotten before), and there's a lot of background noise when recording that wasn't there before the repair. Before I could connect the audio output on the amp to the line in on my laptop using a 1/4" to 3.5 mm cable, and everything sounded pretty clean. Now the sound is distorted and there's a lot of static during silence. The only way to get it sound somewhat decent is to play around with the gate and compression settings.
I'm also having occasional issues ejecting drives and virtual drives, Spotlight tries to index drives that are added to the exception list in System Preferences, and weird random errors showing up in Console related to Finder, Dock, certain apps, and fseventd (the fseventd errors are usually about my flash drive). I'm leaning toward a bad logic board, even though that was just replaced. I just did an Erase and Install a few weeks ago so I doubt it's software-related. Plus I've been having issues with it in one form or another since I got it back, which also makes me think it's not the OS.
Anyway, I'm just looking for opinions at this point. I'm going to take it back to the Apple store in a few days because of a small group of dead pixels, so as long as I'm down there I'll ask them. In the meantime, anyone have any thoughts?
