Help Kernel_task eating CPU and MBP running hot since 10.6.3

Hi Guys,
Need some real help here. My laptop has become almost unusable here because the CPU goes up to 100% and the culprit is kernel_task.
Ive noticed it slightly after installing 10.6.3. CPU runs up to 108c degrees Celsius.
Ive tried reseting PRAM
Ive tried reinstalling OS with a time machine backup
Getting very annoyed. Is there anything I can try?

I tried a reset SMC and a reboot afterwards. However that did not resolve the problem.
Havent really been hearing the fans lately. CPU is 79C celcius.
As i said in my post previously, it is the kernel_task process that is using up the majority of the CPU.

  • MBP running hot, full fans and sluggish with both Safari and Firefox

    Hi guya,
Im having problems with my kate 2007 MBP.
Im sure lately it seems to be running slower and slower and more and more sluggish - I was hoping my Mac wouldn't be subject to "slowdown" like every PC ive ever owned has.
The biggest problem is that if i use either Safari or Firefox to browse the web, they quickly start using 80-100% of my processor causing everything else to run sluggish, the computer to get hot, processors to run up to 90 degrees and fans on full.
Perhaps i multitask more than some people - I can tend ot have a lot of tabs open in Firefox, but sometimes Safari or Firefox show this behaviour with just one tab open.
I do multitask by having about 8 programs open at once and I jump from job to job, but in its early life the MBP used to deal with this - now i feel that i type faster than writing appears on screen, i have to wait ages to work in programs like indesign, and forget trying to run a game like The Sims...
Does everyone else have the 100% processor problems with Safari (and yes im on version 4, and the latest version of firefox too) the only browser which doesn't give me these problems is Opera - I can have many tabs open and it uses very little CPU, I just dont like use Opera as much as Firefox which is my browser of choice.
But why would my OSX run differently to anyone elses? Is there a problem with my Macbook, is there a problem with OSX (does it need installing again?) Is it just time for me to buy a new Macbook Pro - or if I run firefox on that will i get the same problem? Ive got nearly 30gb of spare HD space and maxed it out with 4gb of Ram - so neither of those are causing a problem either...
    Any input would be great...

Have you tried restarting the comp? Sometimes a simple refresh will cure the sluggishness.
Try running repair permissions from your HD and afterwards run +repair disk+ from your software install DVD.
Regarding your comp running hot, make sure it is properly ventilated while in use. The MBP is not a laptop. According to the user manual it states in part:
+"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."+

  • After Mavericks Install, MBP runs hot all the time

Im sure this has been said all over the community but I have to add my two cents. My 2011 MBP was perfect on Mtn Lion. I started the update which failed on install, which I then had to wipe the HD and do a fresh install. My time machine backup wouldnt even restore, that was a fun night let me tell you. Anyways, ever since I installed Mavericks, not only do I have the service battery issue everyone else has but now even running firefox or watching a movie will make the laptop run super hot and the fans start going. Ive even had the MBP shut itself down twice b/c of the overheating. Example: I almost couldnt even get time machine to make a new first time backup b/c the laptop starting running hot during the backup and it shut itself down. The second attempt worked but it sure seemed like it was on the verge of shutting down again. I just tried resetting the SMC but I dont think it did anything if you want my honest opinion.
I hope apple is listening and realizes what mess mavericks is making of our older macbooks.

I did do the verify/repair disk, and there is nothing wrong with the disk. Havent had a chance yet to boot in safe mode. Will post an update shortly but in the meantime:

  • Kernel_task eats CPU when MIDI system wakes up

I have a MacBook Pro and a Focusrite Saffire (connected via firewire).
Noticed that the latest 10.5's are eating a ton of cpu when running Logic (or Ableton Live, my other DAW).
Digging around, using Activity Monitor I see:
when I plug in my Saffire, kernel_task jumps from 2% cpu to about 7%.
when I start Logic/Live, it jumps to 45-50% cpu and stays there (regardless of whether or not sound is being input or output).
Digging a little deeper, with no DAW running, I fire up Audio/MIDI Setup and switch the default output to the Saffire... kernel_task steady at 7%. Click on the MIDI Devices tab and kernel_task jumps up into the forties. Unplugging the Saffire, the cpu load goes down. Replugging, it does not go back up until I click "Rescan MIDI".
I have no MIDI devices connected to the Saffire (nor do I have any midi cables with which to try that experiment).
Using dtrace, I could probably dig more but I'm not on Apple's payroll and I'm too old to hack for free. I'd rather make music.
Fingers crossed that this can be fixed cause half a core is better used in a soft synth or something.

Seems like the problem persists when playing a 720p video on the external display set to 720p. To sum it up

  • "mdworker32" making MBP run hot

    Hi,
I have just upgraded to OS X Yosemite from Maverics
On Yosemite as I run Win7 on VMware Fusion 7.0 the machine runs hot with fans continuously spinning at >4K rpm
The activity monitor shows "mdworker32" taking ?60% of CPU time all the time.
Spotlight shows indexing, but the progress is 0% on the progress bar.
    Am sharing screenshots with details.
What should i do. Can anyone help please.
    Machine:
         SSD Samsung 840 EVO 1TB
    Screenshots of issue

Select the mdworker and quit it using the X in the top menu. Changes?

  • Dock consumes 100% of CPU and fan runs.  What to do?

I have a 2010 MBP with SSD and VMWare (not Parallels).  Every so often, the dock cranks up to consume 100% of the CPU, and the fan runs.  The problem goes away when I reboot. I've tried quiting various applications, but it doesn't seem to make a difference (i.e. I cannot identify a rogue app that's causing this).  There are a lot of discussion threads on this problem with OS 10.6.8 and Parallels, but I'm running Lion 10.7.1 and VMWare (which I've shut down).
Any others have this issue?  Ideas for solution?

Small update: Despite my intelligence, good looks and vast experience I use Google sometimes. To my surprise this file turns out to be a Windows one. Here is someone who is much happier, and since it is some way in my line of thinking I'll quote it, but you might take my previous advice as well:
    http://forums.techarena.in/windows-vista-performance/1012315.htm
"- Open up msconfig.exe > Manage startup programs.
    - Disable ALL Realtek entries
    - Close msconfig.exe
    - Right-click on the speaker icon > Audio devices > Speakers (properties)
    - Go to the enhancements tab
    - Check the box to disable all audio enhancements
    - Close the menu
    - Right-click on the speaker icon > Recording devices
    - Disable all your microphones (yeah..., the actual problem seems to come
    from voice inputs rendering..)
    - Close the menu
    - Restart your computer"

  • Does the new MBP run hot?

I'm looking to buy the new MBP 15". Does anyone know if it runs hot? My current white polycarbonate first generation Intel Macbook always runs ridiculously hot.
    Thanks!

Picked up a new 15" very recently. Subjective heat evaluation:
9400M: Very cool during general use (web browsing/email/etc...) Warm during gaming (WoW).
9600M GT: Warm during general use. Hot during gaming. VERY hot in Windows, gaming or not.
Of note, Windows only sees the 9600M GT, and gets uncomfortably hot (to the point I'm not only uncomfortable using it on my lap, but feel like I ought to be pointing a fan at the bottom-left (where the GPU is located).
The laptop was never uncomfortable on the 9400M, even while running WoW with the laptop directly on my lap. Just pleasantly warm. Same circumstances with the 9600M GT enabled I needed to throw a lapdesk under it, but it didn't get nearly as hot as under Windows.

  • MBP running hot when connected to Cinema Display

I have a 2.33 MBP that I use for work and at home. I also have a 23 inch Cinema display on my desk at home. I have noticed that when I have my MBP connect to the Cinema and the screen on the MBP closed it runs hot and the fans never seem to stop running. I was wondering if anyone has seen the same thing and if so what they have done to resolve the issues. I have had looked at the laptop coolers that go under the laptop and that powers the fans off an USB port, but I really like my desk clean and don't want to add something else to it. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.
    Thanks
    Matt

  • Arch "eats" cpu and raise temperature

    Good morning guys,
    I'm on a Arch x86 with gnome.
    I'm not a complete linux-noob since I've been using gentoo since 2006.
My problem is that on arch the cpu and gpu temperature are always from 5 to 10 °C higher than Gentoo.
Thanks to arch wiki, I configured cpufreq.
Trying to reproduce Gentoo settings, I installed cpufreqd (from aur, with gentoo's cpufreqd.conf) and configured the nvidia card to downclock when I log in gnome.
What looks weird to me is that if I run:
    watch grep \"cpu MHz\" /proc/cpuinfo
There is ALWAYS a core at full throttle. Maybe for just 2 seconds, then it goes back to slowest speed and immediately the other one raise its speed to maximum.
I set the ondemand governor, and cpufreq-info return it set correctly.
When I'm in gnome, there is always the process "gnome-shell" that takes 2-6 % of cpu.
But when I shutdown X, and I am all alone in the shell, the top command shows no processes using too much cpu, even if the strange behaviour of cpu-speed still happens (according to watch).
In gentoo the cores stay to slowest speed for much a longer time.
My conclusion is, the temperature are so high cause the pc never really "relax" due to core strange policy with speed.
In my rc.conf, that's what about modules:
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    MODULES=(fuse acpi-cpufreq cpufreq_ondemand cpufreq_performance cpufreq_powersave)
    and about daemons:
    DAEMONS=(@hwclock @syslog-ng @crond @dbus @gpm @net-profiles @bluetooth @cpufreq @sensors @acpid @rcpbind @nfs-common @alsa @avahi-daemon @cups @cpufreqd @gdm)
I hope somebody can help me, or maybe just show me the way to fully debug the system.
    Thank you very much,
    MJ
ps- I hope not to posted in the wrong forum, but the other sections seems not for this kind of problem.

    I'm running 2.6.39-ARCH.
Ok for the power regression, but it is correct that my core 2 duo 9400 never stay at 800MHz? Is this kernel suppose to switch back to full power one core at time for just 1-2 seconds? And I am not pretty sure this could be related to high temperature ("higher temperature" is better).
I just did a deeper test: turning off one daemon at time, this strange behavior still continue to happen. Even when "rc.d list" show no active daemon. Looking to the output of "top" and "powertop" give me no info, but maybe just cause my ignorance.
For now, thanks to everyone is trying to help.
    MJ
    edit:
    @ chemicalfan and lukaszan
I am not complaining about performance. Instead, it seems to me that this Arch is quite faster to boot and to use. I think - but I'm not very sure of it - that this fact of compiling software under Gentoo is a bit overestimated. I can agree about the possibilities of certain personalization or just the kernel lightness, but I think that if the arch kernel (or some process I am unable to identify) can't keep my proc at the lowest frequency some problem exists.

  • Iantivirus and MBP Running Hotter

Just read that iantivirus makes the MBP run hotter. I have noticed that since I started using iantivirus my SMC FanControl shows the temp to be about 69C doing nothing. Am I better off just not using iantivirus???

Yes, until its developer gets it sorted out. There's nothing on the loose for it to catch, so you're in no danger without it.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • 2007 MBP Running Hot and Freezing occasionally after 10.6.3

This is obviously not normal. Anyone else experiencing this or know of the cause or a fix?
It's gotten so hot I've resorted to placing a towel in my lap. iStat says the CPU is running at 148 degrees, all the time, with the GPU frequently hitting 160, and both fans are running full bore.
The freezes come and go, and usually only last for 20-30 seconds, but when they do pop up, they happen frequently, as many as 10 times per hour.
I don't think I am doing anything differently than I have always done. No new software, etc.
Thanks much in advance for any suggestions.

I don't have 10.6 on anything but I believe this works for SL. In Applications > Utilities you will find Activity Monitor (hereafter AM to avoid the extra typing). Launch it and look at its "Show" selector at the top of the window. By default, AM launches to "User Processes" and that seldom shows enough. Change it to "All Processes" to get a good look at the true background picture.
Look at the columns AM presents. Find the "%CPU" column and click on it to sort the list by usage. When the computer is idling (you've quit all applications so only the Finder is active), no process should be more than 4-6 percent (might be a little different in SL). Basically you're looking for things that are using double-digits of the CPU cycles when the computer seems to be at idle..
Processes with "mds" in the name are related to Spotlight indexing but don't run that often after the initial install. If "syslogd" is running at high numbers, something is writing a bunch of stuff to system.log. I had that happen on my MBP with the demo for the game "Prey." Even when the computer was only idling, the demo continued to write to the log file and ballooned it from its usual size of ~250K to over 60MB, and ran the heat up to boot. Deleting the demo and a restart cured that insanity.
I found a process related to Safari 4 called Safari Webpage Preview Fetcher that ran a lot. It's how Tops Sites gets page previews. I now avoid using Tops Sites, especially on our slower G4 Macs which constitute the majority of our household Mac-ness. That process really gummed the works in those older Macs, all running 10.4.11.
You might want to repeat the question in the Snow Leopard forums. Someone more familiar with SL may see a pattern in the shutdowns and stalls. The 10.6 forums are here:

    Keep us posted.

  • Fans Running Hard and MBP getting HOT!!!

When simply surfing the web and checking email, the fans kick on and the MBP bottom gets very hot...it seems to have just started doing this recently...is there something to fix this? Is there a setting? It is well ventilated.

This problem started on my MBP about two weeks ago.
I am only running Safari and the fans start running at 6000 rpm for about 10 or 15 mins then stops. It gets hot under the top left area. I mostly notice it running late at nite...
I contacted AppleCare and was transfered to a specialists. We went thru all the checks and did the PMU and PRAM reset with no change. Then the next day ran the Apple Hardware test from DVD one with no trouble found.
It was suggested that I send in the unit for repair but I am waiting (patiently) for a fix of my poor display (very grainy, light leakage, banding, etc) so am waiting to send it in.
This is also affecting my battery life. I was getting 4 hours under Safari usage but now only get 2.5 hrs on a brand new battery.
good luck all in a fix.

  • My MBP runs hot in the boot volume selection menu

I noticed that when I start my MBP holding shift to get to the boot volume selection menu and leave it there for 15 minutes or so (might be shorter, I was gone both times that it's happened so far) the MBP gets unusually hot (almost too hot to touch between keyboard and screen) and I can hear the fans going much faster and louder than they should be (I think). After choosing one of the boot volumes and checking the temperatures in iStat Pro I see that the CPU is at just under 70°C. A few minutes later the temperatures go down by about 10°C and the fans quiet down running at the usual 2000rpm.
Why does it get so hot? How can a simple boot menu be consuming more resources than a full desktop environment plus open Dashboard (which FYI contains 20+ widgets).

    Answer: yes, it does.
