Help... kernel_task
OK so basically yesterday my macbook started being really laggy when i was doing anything that was more than complete basic tasks. ive never had this issue before at all and it was a complete sudden onset. when i'm watching video's online or trying to play Football Manager through steam everything becomes very slow to respond, the mouse becomes very jolty and hard to control etc.
i decided to have a look on my activity monitor to see what was going on and i notice something called kernel_task. when i have absolutely nothing open its %CPU is anywhere between 3% and 20% and when im trying to watch a video on iplayer or something it gets to 160%+. i'm not amazingly techy but ill give you as much info i can about my mac:
Mac OS X
Version 10.6.8
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DD43
other info on kernel_task from the activity monitor:
when only doing basic things on my mac:
PID: 0
Process Name: kernel_task
User: root
%CPU: 3-20
Threads: 66
Real Mem: 190.0 MB
Kind: Intel
when doing something that makes it laggy (playing Football Manager 2012) through the steam application:
PID:0
Process Name: kernel_Task
%CPU: 25-170
Threads:66
Real Mem:220.0 MB
Kind:intel
would appreciate any replies that might help stop this from happening.
I tried a reset SMC and a reboot afterwards. However that did not resolve the problem.
Havent really been hearing the fans lately. CPU is 79C celcius.
As i said in my post previously, it is the kernel_task process that is using up the majority of the CPU.

Help Kernel_task eating CPU and MBP running hot since 10.6.3
Hi Guys,
Need some real help here. My laptop has become almost unusable here because the CPU goes up to 100% and the culprit is kernel_task.
Ive noticed it slightly after installing 10.6.3. CPU runs up to 108c degrees Celsius.
Ive tried reseting PRAM
Ive tried reinstalling OS with a time machine backup
Getting very annoyed. Is there anything I can try?I tried a reset SMC and a reboot afterwards. However that did not resolve the problem.

Dec 18, 2014, 05:01:33 PM Self test - passedI did all the things you suggested & it is running much better! After that, in doing the permissions repair with Disk Utility there were some to repair initially, but in running again there were none to repair.
Font Book validate initially showed several fonts with major problems but after restoring fonts & doing the start up in Safe Mode & restarting, there were no major errors but still 9 with minor problems.
Are there additional things that I should now do?
Linc, I thank you soooooooo much!
Wayne
In running Activity Monitor, under Real Memory kernel_task initially was 1.81 GB, then dropped to 430.4 MB but now when I open it was showing 1.28 GB but is up to 1.30 now. Maybe the following will help.

Help! Kernel_task more than 300% of CPU and extremely laggy
Hi, I am using MacBook Pro 13 inch Early 2011 and using OS X 10.9.2 Mavericks
It has been a few days that my computer was running extremely slow and I need to hold the power button for 10 seconds for it to boot (if i press it once the white power light on the mac body would only light for a while then turns off again)
I did not know what triggered it, it was just like thay when i tried booting by mac
I checked activity monitor and the kernel_task was actually taking up more than 300% of my cpu!
I googled for answers but I can't find any. Is it due to third party software?
Furthermore, when I safe boot the kernel_task would actually be low and the speed will revert back to normal.
Please help me
Thank you1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

My computer has been extremely slow lately and the Kernel_Task has been using up a lot of CPU lately. I don't know much about how to fix this stuff so if someone could take a look at my EtreCheck (someone said to do that on another forum and start a new thread) and give me some advice that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You do not need a 3rd party anti-malware product. It is redundant to what Mac OS X provides standard, plus it consumes resources better used for the stuff you really want to run. And kernel extension are running as part of kernel_task (which is the guts of Mac OS X).
How does Mac OS X protect me?

145.22 GB Page-ins
4.53 GB Page-outs
Considering your system has been up for about 26 days, the ratio of page-ins to page-outs reinforces etresoft's contention that you need more RAM. You are getting the high page-ins because Mac OS X is throwing away read only memory (mostly program code) because it is easy, and then having to page it back in to memory when it is needed again. Also the high number of killed Apple daemons, which is another way Yosemite frees up space.
Google Chrome can be very memory intensive. It runs a separate process for each Tab, so no single process looks like it is consuming a lot of RAM, but if you have a lot of Tabs open, there are a lot of processes consuming a lot of RAM.
Having an SSD with enough RAM will really make your Mac fly. I have a 15" 2011 with 16GB RAM and an SSD, and it great. Suggest Crucial.comhttp://crucial.com or MacSales.com (OWC) as reliable Mac RAM vendors.

This sounds like a Mac Cleaner. Mac cleaners tend to fight Yosemite. If this module is doing a lot of disk I/O it would cause the file system in kernel_task to consume a lot of CPU time, and since you have a SSD, there would be very little I/O wait when doing I/O.
Unless you absolutely need some service this component is providing, I would suggest removing it, at least until you know for a fact it is not causing problems.

Not sure what this is doing. Do you need it?
The less stuff you pre-load into Memory, the further your 4GB can stretch. -
PLEASE HELP!! KERNEL_TASK IS KILLING ME!
I have been having problems with the kernel_task using up ridiculous amounts of of CPU. It doesn't seem to be a heat problem since it happens mostly when I play videos (streaming) as well as editing video using Adobe Premiere. Please help. I need a functioning Mac Pro to complete everyday tasks as well as work.
Streaming video uses a huge amount your CPU - a fact you can verify by going to your Activity Monitor. This is just your computer doing what it does. As long as you don't see problems with performance or from your monitor, or excess heat, or error messages, this isn't a problem.

Kernel_task is using 300% on my cpu. Any help??
I upgraded to Mavericks and that kernel_task has bombed my CPU recently. I followed suit with everyone else and downloaded EtreCheck and copied the results to my clipboard as I alone cannot identify the problem and may need some assistance.
Something to note is the kernel_task will pipe up for about twenty minutes and then fade away and then pipe back up in an hour or so. This test was done whilst it wasn't at it's highest...anyway.

Kernel_task...? Just...help!
I just got my 13in MacBook Pro yesterday. I haven't installed anything on it, really. The only thing I did was connect to my HP Photosmart All-in-One printer via Bluetooth and print a few words, just to see if it worked. I've seen that HP drivers can sometimes cause the kernel_task to start using up all your CPU, but I didn't install any drivers. I've looked and looked, and there's just nothing there. The lag is highly annoying, and renders the machine practically unusable. It also goes on for about 30 minutes at a time...then it will stop for maybe 40 minutes before it starts back up again. I'm not running anything weird. I can't figure out what's wrong. I'm fed up and about to send this thing back and just get a PC. Help!
I also updated OS X and I imported about four CDs to iTunes...and I'm currently reinstalling OS X from the disk that came with my Mac.
Message was edited by: emilyrigbySame problem here and it started with HP drivers....install.
I wonder how to remove this to check wether it is the root cause.
I also have a Total loss of internal keyboard and trackpad, only the BT and wired keyboard and mouse are working.

Kernel_task at 90% on my Macbookpro HELP
my macbook pro is so slow help me
The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for this condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan or sensor
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or sensor.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
Peripherals
Connecting an external display to some MacBook Pro models via Thunderbolt may cause this issue. I don't know of a fix, other than to disconnect the display.
Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume may put an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar. -
Kernel_task using 1600% CPU, please help
After updating to yosemite (nightmare) my Mid 2011 macbook air has been running ridiculously slow.
Activity monitor is telling me that kernel_task is using huge amounts (always over 100%) of CPU
The only way i can get my computer to function at a normal speed is using Safe boot
Please help!I seem to have the same issue ever since the Yosemite update. It's eating up my memory and battery. I see some kernel extension errors. Here's my report, please advise.

Does anyone know how to reduce KERNEL_TASK? PLEASE HELP!!!
i am currently using MBR early 2011 15ing 2GHZ
I'm afraid this is not that unusual a number for kernel_task.
Still, if I were experimenting to see if I could figure out what keeps it at that level, I would try at least two things
(1) Start up in Safe Mode and run there awhile. Does kernel_task still use 1 GB?
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
(2) Restart and login to a different user for a while. Does kernel_task still use 1 GB?
And of course, there are the suggestions in that article I posted above.

Help! Kernel_task using high percentage of CPU.
Hi guys,
I am using Macbook Pro with Retna. Recently my macbook started to slow down while making loud fan noise. I noticed that Kernel Task was using high percentage of CPU (aroung 600). This is not the first time. Last time I took it to apple store and got fix, but this time I can not do that because my warrenty expired.
I tried to fix it by formating the macbook, but it did not work.
Could anyone help me with this?!?Do SMC reset. how u do it???????.... well connect the magsafe adapter to the mac, Shutdown the mac. Then Hold ctrl+opt+shift+power button for 6-8 sec. Leave all the keys and have a watch on the Magsafe, the amber should turn Green the moment u leave all the keys indicating a successfull Reset. Then unplug the magsafe wait fro 3 sec plug it again. Start the machine , still the issue is there then finally do a PRAM/NVRAM reset holding cmd+opt+p+r as u start the machine. Machine would chime Twicce on the 3rd chime leave all the keys. Even after this doesnot do good then battery reset is required for which u ll hav to take it to Apple service store.

Im a desperate. On a photography commission in Bulgaria, and my MBP is experiencing crippling lockups, I'm a long way from any apple shop and I need the laptop for the job, if i cant sort it out soon ill lose the client, having paid for an expensive wasted trip!
Have apple care, but seems i can only contact by phone? which is going to be very costly from my mobile. Any email?
Symptoms:
Mac starts up fine, get to login screen within 50-seconds, and for the first minute of so, it operates as expected. After a minute or so, the system locks up, spinning beach-ball, no response to clicking, force quit shortcut, all i can do is shutdown by holding the on/off button.
Lockups' seem to last about 5min, with 10-20 seconds of perfectly normal operation between them.
Lockups occur on login screen, if i don't login immediately.
Lockups timed to start at 2min (+/-10sec) from first pressing on/off switch.
When initiating file transfers (eg backing up docs to USB stick), transfers progress normally during the intervals when lockups occur, progress bar does not move during lockups.
Lockups sometimes stop clock and battery status from changing (eg top menu frozen)
During lockups there is minimal disk activity, just a short pulse of clicks every 40sec or so.
CPU fan is (quiet) off, or running slowly during lockups.
Checking process in Activity Monitor: free ram = 3.2gb, processor running at 5%, virtual memory usage is 140gb not sure if this is normal? the only high resource process running is kernel_task (PiD 0, root, 1.7%, 63tds, 180/123mb), 60gb free disk space (trash empty).
My Mac:
Mac Book Pro 15" - 2.8ghz 4gbRAM - the first 'unibody' version running Snow Leopard - Downloaded and installed all recommended software updates in mid November.
How it happened:
Computer was put to sleep by closing the lid, with a movie (.AVI) still playing, in QuicktimeX, upon wake the next day, I closed QT and shortly afterwards started experiencing the 'lock-ups' . The laptop has not suffered any nocks or bumps in the last week, nor have I downloaded anything or used any risky websites.
So far i have tried:
Starting, loading movie and quitting QT
Checking hardware in system profiler, all reads normal / ok etc including RAM.
Checking disks in disk utility.
Swapping between high and low power GPU's
Reset PR RAM
Remove replace battery & power
Start in safe mode - does not work (progress bar not move for 10 min)Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There does seem to be contact information for Bulgaria:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
They might be able to direct you to an AASP if necessary.
Do you have your system discs with you? If so, you could boot from your install disc and repair your boot disk and see if this helps. You could also try trashing your Quicktime and reinstalling it, since it seems to be at the root of your problems.
You could also try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test.
A Safe Boot is what I would have recommended, since it disables your start up items, but it sounds like you are not able to do a Safe Boot. It may be worth going to Accounts>Log in Items and remove anything listed as a log-in item. You could have a problem with a log in item that has somehow gotten corrupted.
You could also try creating a new user account and see if the problems persist in the new account. If not, you have a software problem in your usual account.
You could have something like a dying hard drive. Open Disk Utility and check to see if SMART is verified.
These are just a few general things to try--I really don't know what is going on with your Mac, but hope that this will a least be a start in finding the cause of your troubles.
Good luck! -
Can you help me diagnose my macbook crash log and fix the crash?
Hi I have been using my macbook for 1 and a half years and only a month ago, it started to crash constantly. 3 days ago, the macbook couldn't restart after a crash, so I format the whole disk and re-installed snowleopard and got updates. But it kept crashing...
(not sure if another problem related to it or not: my superdrive (MATSHITADVD-R) also made creepy annoying noise everytime i boot the machine, but after the re-installment, the noise problem disappeared)
Here is the most recent 2 crash reports I saved: Please help if you have any thought how to fix it... Thank you!!!
