Help: Letterbox effect auto applied to imported clips

Hello everyone,
I've just noticed that all the movie files I import into my iMovie app are being auto applied with a letterbox effect. The clips I import are 640x400 resolution, and iMovie seems to want them to be 640x480, so it is adding two blank spaces with black background to the top and bottom of the clip.
I would really prefer for it to not do this, as I want the original 640x400 size to be preserved. Do any of you know how I can manage this?
Thank you for your help,
Alan.

Well, unless I'm mistaken, I can only surmise that those are simply the limitations of iMovie. iMovie defaults to what Apple regards as the most common viewing dimensions e.g. 640x480px for 4:3 TV screens and 720px for widescreen (16:9) etc. The problem is that 4:3 is as ancient as 800x600 monitors. Do you know any unfortunate souls that are still using them? I don't.
640x400 is an increasingly common video resolution for web video. Take a look at Apple's own tutorials. They're 640x400. Yet iMovie isn't capable of exporting to 640x400, without squeezing your content. Why? It would seem Apple are well-equipped to produce engaging content to be viewed on the web while selling us the tools of yesteryear. Why?

  • Apply same effect to a collection of clips?

I am on Premiere cs6.  I have a collection of travel clips (100+) that were shot handy held and were a little shaky.  I tried using the wrap stabilizer effect on some of them and it helped.  Instead of opening each video clip one by one, apply the effect, and export the result.  Is there a way to apply the same effect on a collection of clips and then export the result?

Sure you can.  When you add an effect to the tracks rack, you can reveal an envelope for each adjustment parameter of that effect in envelope section just under the track.  An example of studio reverb is shown below, and by adjusting the wet output level, controls the level of the effect on the clip over time.
There's a lot to explore using envelopes, and you also change the curve to splines if you wish.
A lazy mans workaround is to add a duplicate of the clip into a new track with the effect applied (removing or disabling the effect from the other clip), then envelope that new track's volume to blend with the mix, thus achieving a similar effect.  Make sense?

  • Color Correction - batch apply AUTO CONTRAST to many clips in timeline

Hi, I am loking for a way to _apply the Auto Contrast to many clips at once_. I have lots of CC to do and few time, and I find that using the auto contrast (in this case) would be a nice start, but I do not know how to do it to may clips in one step.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks, cheers
    Steph.

It sounds like the OP is attempting to have FCP auto-analyze each clip that has this filter applied. While FCP doesn't do that, there is a faster way of accessing the filter settings without having to double click each clip. This requires the use of Auto-selects and Open sync.
Assuming the clips in question are located on track V1:
    - Option click the auto select button on V1. (This is the grey button to the right of the padlock). By option-clicking, you're automatically deselecting the other video tracks.
    - From either the Canvas or the Viewer, click the Playhead sync drop menu (located at the top center), and select Open. This opens the playhead sync between the timeline and the viewer.
    - In the Viewer, click the Filters tab.
Now, whenever you move your playhead through your timeline, the viewer will display the filter properties for the clip on V1 that is under the playhead.

  • Help urgently needed: bizarre problem - no audio in imported clip!

    Hey there!
I have a bizarre - never the less urgent problem:
When I import some material (presentations) which I have recorded on Mini DV with my Canon MVX10i Camcorder the following problem occurs:
There is one particular presentation which somehow looses the audio during the import process!
That means the imported clip has no audio even though the audfio is on tape! Other clips before and after do not have this problem - the audio is available after the import.
A bizarre but serious problem for me. Any suggestions?
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Thorge

I had a similar problem. When I started the tape from the beginning no audio would import. To solve it I started the tape a few seconds in and It seemed to work.
    Hope this helps.

  • When importing clips to iMovie11 the audio is missing. I have been able to successfully to this in the past and all of the sudden it is not working. Any help to solve the problem would be appreciated.

Download/install an app is a know possible solution.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If all user-installed apps are not launching, it could be an Apple ID authorization issue. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information.
Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.

  • Replace Footage with Current Effects and Attributes Applied to New Clip

I made a mock-up commercial with comp videos from a website and now need to replace them with the paid versions of the clips. Is there an easy way to replace the footage and keep all the attributes and effects I put on the comps? I tried the replace function but fcp told me "Insufficient content for edit."

Tom's right there, you can't replace a ten-seconds clip with an eightsecond clip.
But also look up the paste attributes function. This allows you to keep all of your attributes while replacing just the media.
*Copying and Pasting Specific Clip Attributes*
*Clip attributes are all the parameter settings applied to a clip—for example, motion parameter settings, audio and video filters and their parameter settings, speed parameter settings, and so on. Copying and pasting selected clip attributes is a quick way to add nearly any attribute to other clips in an edited sequence. You can copy motion paths, frame cropping, and animated filter effects from one video clip to another.*
*Suppose you have just applied three filters and a speed setting to one clip, and you decide that you want exactly the same effects to be applied to several other clips in the sequence. Instead of re-creating each setting clip by clip, you can simply copy the first clip, select the other clips, and paste only the specific settings you want into all of them simultaneously.*
*When you copy a clip from the Timeline, you also copy all of its attributes. Instead of pasting duplicates of the clip you copied with all of its attributes, you can:*
*Paste specific video or audio attributes that you want into other clips in your sequence.*
*Paste only the clip’s video or audio content, with none of the attributes, so that the content of a clip is replaced. In other words, you can replace the clip but keep the parameter settings of the original clip.*

  • Crop tool now displays a Diagonal.  The "apply during import" panel has gone away!!  Any help appreciated!!

My Crop Tool now displays a Diagonal instead of a "Rule of Thirds".  I do not know why or how to correct.
Secondly, the "Apply During Import" portion of the right hand panel has disappeared.   Thus I am unable to use custom setting while importing.  I don't really know if this happened during upgrade to LR5.4 or not.
    Any help greatly appreciated!!!

You probably pressed the O key which cycles through the crop overlays when the crop tool is enabled.
Click Tools / Crop Guide Overlay in Develop to see the various choices.

  • Master clip effects applied when replacing clip into after effects?

    Hi Guys,
Love the new Master Clip effects in Premiere 2014 but im wondering what happens to the effects if I replace the clip in my timeline into an After Effects clip? Will the effects applied to the master clip be disabled for that new AE clip ?
    Best,
    Patrick

    Hi,
Which effect are you trying to apply?
Are you making subclips before applying the effect on the Master clip?
You can apply the effect on the Master clip and then make subclips from it. It will work for you.

  • New shape layer auto applies the same layer effects as previous ones

Everytime I draw a new SHAPE layer it auto applies the same layer effects I applied to the first shape I drew in a document. I can’t find anything online about turning this annoying setting off. So for example, if I draw a circle and apply a gradient overlay and a drop shadow then every circle I draw from here on out adds the same effects automatically.

  • Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion. Help??

Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion.
I was working on a project, when all of a sudden the event library went blank.  There are no devices showing in the left column, only "last import" and "aperture videos".  There are no video clips in the editing window.  I have "Show: All Clips" selected.  I've tried "group events by disk".
When I have a Project open, it plays just fine.  There are no yellow triangles saying "source clip is missing".  Yet, again...nothing is in the event library large editing window.  So, it seems the data is still there, but invisible.  This is true with all the projects, and all the external devices I've experimented by plugging in to see if their video clips show up in the event library.
I have tried to import new movies, and iMovie responds as normal...looking like it's importing, then "generating thumbnails", then it makes the "ding" signalling that the import is complete...but nothing shows in the event library.  I've tried importing movies from the harddrive, from quicktime, and from an external drive.
I have searched the forums, and found many users with a similar, but not the same, problem.  For them, it seems the "go to users-library-preferences and delete iMovie plist" has solved their problem.  This didn't work for me.
I uninstalled/reinstalled iMovie, I even have re-installed Mountain Lion (from a last-ditch effort suggestion from Apple technician).
HERE'S AN INTERESTING DETAIL:  After almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple, I decided to cut my losses and take my project to another Mac I have.  I'm working on a project, for work, that is critical that it's completed by tonight (whoops), and all my video is on an external drive.  So, I plug in the external drive to Mac #2, open iMovie, and everything is looking fine.  I continue importing some files I was converting, through Wondershare, and suddenly (whether or not this has to do with the importing, I'm not sure), the SAME THING happened to Mac #2!!!!  I can't believe this.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Have you ever heard of this happening?  Could it have to do with the files I'm importing???
I apologize if my language is confusing.  Obviously, I'm not an Apple genius-person!  I hope I've provided all the information you need.
    Mac #1 is a 27" desktop, mid-2012, software up-to-date.  Mac #2 is a 24" desktop, about 4 years old, OSX 10.7.5

    I'm adding more information:
in Finder, my iMovie folders are all visible and accessible.  When I click on a clip from iMovie Events folder, Quicktime opens and plays the clip.  ALL my video is not missing - it just isn't showing up in the Event Library!
This happened all of a sudden, while I was working on iMovie project (on both computers).
All my Projects are intact, and play when I open them.

  • As Soon As Any Effect Is Applied On The Video Or Sequence The Video Playing Speed Gets Faster Than Normal And Red Screen Also Starts Appearing In Between The Video. Tried Changing The Speed And Duration But Its Not Working.Help Required ASAP.

The Issue Is Majorly Caused When Any Effect Is Applied On The Video And Rendered The Issue Occurs. And By Closing The Application And Restarting The Application Its Works Fine Again But As Soon As The Effects Are Applied Same Problem Occurs Recursively.

What is the format of the material you are editing, is it variable frame rate?

  • Bug: Letterbox effect gives unwanted high brightness and low contrast

When I apply the Letterbox effect, it looks good in the preview, but the result is a barely visible clip, all whited-out, letterboxed but with extremely low contrast and high brightness (applied to the whole screen, including the black letterbox bars). Some other effects, like Fog and Aged Film, produce the same unwanted results.
    What's going on?
I am using iMovie HD 6.0.2 on a MacBook. Any help is appreciated.

Yes my particular issue is not like yours. However, there have been many other laptop users experiencing similar problem to yours after 3.10 kernel. Mostly it seems to be bumblebee users that experience your problem with the blank screen. We do know that nvidia have yet to make their official drivers work with kernel 3.10 and up. The drivers in the Arch repository have been patched to work with 3.10. From what I have seen, this also only seem to be affecting laptops with newer nvidia gpu's. I fear there is not much to do with this problem until nvidia give official 3.10 kernel support.
My suggestion would be to stick with 3.9.9 kernel and the drivers that work with it, and don't upgrade those packages until nvidia has addressed these issues. If you have a look at the nvidia forums you will see quite a number of topics mentioning black screen when starting x on 3.10 kernel, and also a thread for the system dying. Reading some of the threads there may help you keep up to date on whether or not the issue seem to be solved.

  • Importing clips back from DV camera...240 clips, then trouble

    Hi all,
Yes I'm trying to take a lot of people's advice in these discussions about saving to DV tape and then re-importing in the time-line of a new project but .... have been trying for days to re-import an hour and a half of footage but everytime we get to clip no. 240/244, it all goes bad.
Either it just stops importing right then and there and the camera stops playback or, it all looks like it's taken the whole 60 minutes of clips from the tape but then you scroll through the clips in the timeline and notice that after about 5 minutes all the clips are black. Each clip has a duration time but there is nothing showing on the viewfinder. Also it then won't let you save. You have to force quit.
I've tried just about everything to fix this including cleaning heads on camera (in case it is recording or playing back in a fashion that is interpreted as corrupt), using virgin tape each time in case it is faulty tape and also using different drives. One external, one internal.
Just SD not HD and the camera is a Sony TRV-900.
By the way the clips are short and sharp.... most of them between 1.5 seconds and 3 seconds. This means if I did manage to re-load all the footage back into a new time-line in a new project, there would be something like 700 - 800 clips. Is this the problem perhaps.
I would dearly love to have someone's feedback on this.
Thanks in anticipation and happy Easter.
    Peter L

I have no idea if these ideas will help, but here's what I'd try:
    1. Do NOT use LP when recording to the TRV900.
    2. Be sure the camera is set to record 16-bit audio, not 12-bit. If it's 12-bit, the audio coming back to iMovie may be causing the problem.
    3. Try exporting to the camera with NO audio. If audio is the problem, that should fix it.
    4. Try turning on the preference "Play through to camera". As you play the movie, press the Record buttons on the camera. When THAT video is imported, does it fail too?
    5. iMovie has a minimum duration for each scene that it applies when importing from the camera. (I forget what it is.) Your short clips may be shorter than what iMovie uses, causing clips to "merge". Shouldn't affect anything else, though. But to avoid any confusion, try turning off importing with scene breaks.
    6. The underlying cause may be a FireWire issue, of course. Have you tried a different port and a different cable? Are you still able to successfully import OTHER video you've shot with that camera?

  • Imported clips order

Hi, using a Sony handycam with mini DVDs, I always get an annoying problem while importing clips in iMovie: in the import window they are al correctly ordered, but when import is finished, clips in the Event Library are all in accidental order... this dramatically slows assembling the project...
    Am I doing anything wrong?
    Thank you for your help!

Hello everyone! I have several Mini DV tapes that I had (back then) exported my edited and published movies to in order to (also) store the completed video on the Mini DV tape(s). Now, to fast forward, I want to import the content of my Mini DV tapes into iMovie in order to work with the content further. What I do not like is that I receive several clips which is more than annoying because I have music and narration, etc. already applied from editing the movie back then and exporting to the Mini DV tape - hence, I want ONE CLIP ONLY otherwise, I get cut up transition with narration and music (in iMovie with several clips) that flowed properly from the completed movie on my Mini DV tape. How can I import as ONE CLIP ONLY? Please, anyone, help!!! Thank you in advance! Cheers, Jason

  • Can I save ALL effects on a Soundtrack Pro clip at once, for reuse w/ FCP?

i am using soundtrack pro with fcp for the first time. i have several different clips which need the same group of effects (the same sound-tweaking) placed on each separate clip so that that the overall sound of this one scene (composed of many clips) remains the same once its treated. how can i do this? is there a way to save ALL of the effects on a given soundtrack clip and then apply these instantly to the rest of the same scene's clips? in other words, can i avoid having to add many (6, for example) separate custom setting to each separate video clip within a particular scene?
    thanks,
    marc

    jim,
i fiddled with the scripting function for a few hours, following the instructions within soundtrack's "help" files. i was able to save a script, but once i'm in fcp, i control click on a given file, click "send to...script" then highlight my saved script. always, a dialog box comes up asking if i really want to continue, as it will "destroy" the file. sure enough it does destroy the file, turning the audio into a bunch of very high pitch bleep sounds. so i'm confounded, and, frankly, stupified.
doug, i'm also stupified with lift and stamp. i can get the sound "palette" opened, but the "save as preset" button is grayed out, making the feature impossible to use.
perhaps i should place these new problems on a new post but i thought i'd reply here first for what it's worth. i thank you both for your inputs. in theory, either one of these options would be ideal, but i've spent about 3 hours and can't get either to work properly....
