Help! Lost all songs

My daughter has an I tunes account for herself and one she created for me. Today when adding a song to her ipod she received a message asking if she wanted to link her library to mine. (At least this is what she thinks it said. She is 13 and was in a big rush to do her download.) She pressed yes and all her songs disappeared. Does anyone know how if it is possible to get them back?
  Windows XP

Hello Julie,
She just needs to link the iPod back to her own Library. Her iPod is in automatic update mode, linking it back to her own library will replace your songs with hers.
Just some additional information:
If your iPod is set for automatic update and you link it to a different iTunes library, iTunes brings up a dialogue window asking whether you want to replace the songs on your iPod with the songs in this iTunes. Unless you do want to replace your songs, you should always press press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod unless you link back to your original library.
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

Hi, I've lost all song data ( besides song name) on 1,100 WAV files. Does anyone know an app or fix that can identify Album & Artist (& maybe album art) on these files? Thanks

    Hi John,
A major drawback with using wav for storage is that it doesn't carry a tag. This means that in the event of a corrupted library the only information remaining is the filename. Other data may be stored in the path but iTunes doesn't know how to get it. I understand that you need this format for your workflow with Diamond Cut, but that makes it all the more important that you backup your iTunes database on a regular basis.
Provided that you still have the tracks in their artist and album folders and haven't let iTunes "reorganise" them you should be able to restore some useful metadata using my script TagFromFilename. The script reads the path and filename, and provided these are in the normal layout of <Path>\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext> can restore Artist, Album Artist, Track Name and Track Number. If your files have a different but predicatable layout with the same information, e.g. the data is all in the filename, then I could create a suitable version of the script to get the data into iTunes. I recommend you disable both the Keep... and Copy... options in iTunes advanced preferences before adding files to the iTunes database. Ideally you also want a complete backup of your correctly structured folders in case you need to pull copies back from it.
As stated earlier, uninstalling iTunes before the upgrade wouldn't have helped. The crucial thing before any upgrade is to backup all user data from the drive that will be wiped. Typically the iTunes database lives in C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes on Vista or Windows 7. The crucial file is called iTunes Library.itl. You seem fairly certain that you don't have a backup database that you could restore but an exhaustive search of your hard drive for files of the form *.itl might still be worth doing. If you find any apart from the active library we can discuss how you open them to see if they are useful.

  • Help, lost all the songs on my iPod when checked the box titled "Replace all items when Autofilling" in my Autofill Settings window.

Help, I lost all the songs on my iPod when I deleted a few songs from my iTunes Library, checked the box titled "Replace all items when Autofilling" in my Autofill Settings window, and then tried to Autofill. Note that I do not purchase songs from iTunes, but rather I rip songs off my own cd's and then transfer the mp3 files to iTunes.  And after I transfer mp3 files from my pc to iTunes and then Autofill, I generally delete those files from my pc.
I can still see the songs in my iTunes Library, but not on my iPod.  Is there a way that I can salvage them and get them back on my iPod?
    Thanks in advance.

Well you will have to wait to connect you ipod to the orignal computer and it will put all your songs back on to it.

  • Ipod nano lost all songs- tried to restore and wont

Hi, I hope someone ca help me.
The ipod nano lost songs. when connected to itunes- all songs seemed to be able to be loaded onto the device- but once disconnected they were not there.
Then tried to restore (didn't need update) and it said that it wouldn't restore because ipod files are used by another application- (not that I am aware???)
I did the diagnostic test thing and it said:
    Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD , PCI bus 0, device 29, function 7. WARNING: problem with device.
Obviously a problem with device.....Any clues- in very simple english- as I am a beginner- it took me hours to find this discussion forum!!!

"all songs seemed to be able to be loaded onto the device- but once disconnected they were not there."
This Apple knowledge-base article may help address that issue.

  • Lost all songs upon upgrade

I was purchasing songs when it said i needed to upgrade itunes. in doing son, i lost all previously purchashed songs & ended up with 286 items belonging to someone else?? any ideas on how to fix this??

"any ideas on how to fix this??"
apparently not, we're all in the dark here. I lost 65 gigs worth of material and now itues won't let me load anything. Pretty cool thing to happen 1 day before a trip
I hated itunes when I first bought my ipod and, well, you can imagine what i think of the POS now.
It'd be nice if Apple would help us out here.

  • Lost  All Songs When Updating

My daughter lost all her songs on her i-pod. She just got a new laptop and when she hooked up her I-pod for the first time, it asked, "Would you like to update and make this your computer for the I-pod?" or words to that effect. She said yes and it wiped all the songs off her i-pod. The old computer with the original downloads is gone (it was a loaner) and the hard drive wiped clean. Anyway to retrieve her songs? Help is much appreciated

Sorry, but if she synchronized her iPod to an empty iTunes library, the tracks on her iPod are probably gone. She can try a Windows file recovery utility - some claim to work with iPods, though I can't make a specific recommendation - and see if it can recover the tracks, but not having used any I don't know how well it will work. Otherwise, she'll have to reimport your CDs and restore her purchased tracks from her backup (she did make a backup, didn't she? I hope so).
For future reference, synchronization between iTunes and an iPod is one way only, from iTunes to the iPod. So if you're connecting your iPod to a new, blank copy of iTunes, you cannot let it synchronize automatically or it will delete all the tracks from the iPod. To connect an iPod with tracks to a blank copy of iTunes, you need to turn off automatic synchronization. There are instructions in other threads here on how to keep an iPod from synching automatically on connection, and on how to transfer tracks from an iPod back to iTunes.
I know this doesn't help the situation now, but just in case the issue ever arises in the future, she'll know more about what to do.

  • Help, lost all photos and texts while syncing new iphone

While syncing my husbands new iphone 3 on itunes I gained all the music but lost all photos and texts... also all the apps and contacts from my iphone were added to his phone. Need help mostly on how to recover the photos that were deleted, there were about 1,000 of them and I didn't realize it was happening until it was too late....

Where did the photos come from in the first place?
    You computer?
    His computer?

  • Help - lost all my work in pages!

When I updated my pages software last week it seems to have reverted back to older versions of documents.
Those older versions seem to have automatically uploaded to iCloud and so I now have lost all the work I did on them in the
    Last week.
Is there anyway I can go to iCloud and access prior versions of documents. Ie view iCloud as it was on a certain date?
Alternatively is there a deleted folders bin in pages where perhaps I moved it to by mistake.
    Huge amount of work lost!!

After two hours and 3402 words Pages decided to simply stop responding to key strokes - no warning, work was saved every 250 word - give or take.
After exhausting all menus in pages I terminated the app and restarted it.
The document, at least 1602 words of it, was there.  The other 1600 words were gone.
    1) there was no warning some sort of fatal limit was being approached.
    2) only part of the work - possibly irreproduceable- was recovered
    3) because this was on an airplane there was no connection to iCloud.
    4) there does not seem to be any documentation available to help when there is no Internet connection
I have no confidence that Pages in iPad is reliable enough to do any critical or time sensitive work. So far it has cost me (unrecoverable ) several hours of valuable work.

  • Help-lost all my icons at bottom of screen

I hit something and I lost all my icons. I don't know if that is what they are called really. The little pictures at the bottom of your comp. when you turn it on. They help you get to itunes, iphoto, firefox, ect,. Does anyone have any idea how I get them back? I was trying to force quit when I lost them, if that helps. Thanks.

Open the Dock pane of System Preferences and turn off the option to show or hide the Dock automatically; one of the other settings affects where the Dock appears, which should be set to the bottom. If the issue cannot be fixed from System Preferences, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, enter /System/Library/CoreServices/ as the folder's location, and double-click the item named Dock there.

  • HELP....LOST ALL SONGS/ Default Itunes?????

so I plugged in my ipod onto another computer's itune library and deleted all the songs on my ipod. somehow i made the other computer the "main" computer for my ipod. I don't know how to make the itunes on my computer the "main" or "default" one again so i cant get my songs! how do i make this computer's itunes the main one for my ipod!!!!!!!?????????

Just connect the iPod to your own iTunes. When you do you should see this message.
”The iPod “xxxxx’s iPod” is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all your existing songs and playlists on this iPod with those from this library.”
Click yes, and the iPod will now be "associated" with your own iTunes. However, whatever songs you have currently stored on the iPod will be deleted if they are not in your own iTunes library.

  • Really need help - Lost All iTunes Files!  I don't want to lose everything!

I moved recently and when I replugged my computer, all my iTunes songs were lost. I still have the songs on my ipod mini and I'm not daring to plug it in. I really want to restore my files.
I figure that I need to do this as if I got a new computer and re-install it. However, I am told that ipods are a one way stream from computer to ipod only and not vice versa. I'm hoping someone can help me because I have bought songs that will be lost too. If I didn't have the purchased songs, I wouldn't mind re-importing all 86 CDs of mine (although it would be a pain).
Please help me ASAP. My CD collection is growing fast and I have a very long bus ride.
    Thanks.

Perhaps you may still have the music files on your PC -- but not seen in iTunes or the PC.
Do a thorough search of your PC using the tips below:
First - Make sure that you enable your Windows Explorer to view 'Hidden' files:
    - Open Windows Explorer
    - Select 'My Computer'
    - On the main Windows Explorer menu: Tools=>Folder Options=>'View' tab
    - In 'Advanced Setting' --> Files and Folders --> Hidden files and folders:
-- Select 'Show hidden files and folders’
    - Click 'Apply to All Folders'
    - Click 'OK'
Then check using Windows Explorer in 'My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\...' for folders containing your music (or wherever you keep your music folders).
Also check in your Recycle Bin to see if you accidentally deleted it. If so, ‘Restore’ it back to it’s original spot.
Then try running a search using Windows Explorer (or similar) for files with the extensions of: m4a, m4p, MP3, OR with the partial names of the songs you are missing.
Do all the above before you decide that your music files have been completely erased from your hard drive.
If you can locate the music files/folders, we can get iTunes to recognize it. Try one of these:
If you have a backup iTunes database file available....
    1. --- Close iTunes. If you have a backup (or previous version) of the ‘iTunes Library’itl’ database file, then place a copy of that file in the ‘...\My Music\iTunes’ folder (or wherever the current, incomplete file resides).
If no backup ITL file exists….
2a. --- In iTunes choose: Edit==>Preferences==>Advanced tab. Select 'Change' and browse to the music folder in your PC drive (if it isn’t already). Click OK to save that setting.
    Then....
2b. --- In iTunes choose: File==>’Add Folder to Library’ & browse to the music folder in your PC drive. Click OK.
Without the ITL file, re-‘Adding’ the music files to the Library will lose you the Ratings, Play Counts, Date Added and Last Played attributes, as well as your Playlists. No real way to recover them if you haven’t made prior backups. Something to consider for the future....
If your music files are truly gone, and you have some or all of your music files on your iPod, these links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring playlists, ratings, playcounts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
XPlay (Software For Cross-Platform Functionality & Music Recovery)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?

  • Switched computers, lost all songs.

Hi. I just bought a new computer, switched over my iPod and iTunes information to it from the old one, gave away my old computer, and unfortunately, when I put my iPod on the connection to charge, it popped up with iTunes and it asked me a question about "This library exists on another computer. Would you like to replace this library with the old one?" so I said "Yes." and now all my songs are gone. My purchased songs, my CD songs, etc. They're not on my iPod, and I have no idea how to get it back. Can anyone help me, or am I just stuck up s* creek without a paddle?

    Eww...
Ok i think i can help u but ull have to check some things out yourself. I hope u havent loaded any new things on ur iPod yet cuz since it is a "hard drive" the data isnt lost its just masked as empty so it can be over written.
Check ur local electronics retailer for software called "iTransfer" (i think thats what its called) its in a white box and its about $20 at BestBuy which is where i saw it. Its supposed to have the ability to restore lost songs, but just check it out for urself and make sure and dont load anything on it until u look into the software.
Hope i was of some help, and reply if u try it so that ill know for future referrence.
