Any help, comments or suggestions will be most welcome.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
TuneJack Windows Only
iPod2PC Windows Only
iGadget Windows Only
iDump Windows Only
iRepo Mac and Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows
YamiPod Mac and Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Hi recovered myy old laptop lost my old play list i tunes on new laptop found old purchased songs , but want to retain songs on pod can i get these back into i tunes on new laptop.
    Any help much apreciated

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.

Hello. I have bought music in itunes previously and played it in imovie but I have just bought more and I did my usual copy onto cd then copy back to itunes but they still come up aac protected whereas before they turned to mpeg. Can anyone please help as I have all this music to put into imovie and I cant get it to work????? HELP!

When you can insert the CD into your Hi-Fi CD player and play it, you can also use the songs in iMovie.
If I go into advanced I dont have a section for burning
It seems as you are running an old version of iTunes, then. But that shouldn't really matter: If you can buy songs and play them in iTunes, you should be able to burn them to an audio CD.
I dont have a section for burning as this has its own icon.
OK, what are your options under Burning?

  • HELP: Lost all my music and my ipod does not show up in I-Tunes.

Okay, my Ipod was stuck on Do Not Disconnect. I rebooted it by hold menu and middle button. Well now the problem is that all my music is gone. I hooked it up to the computer so I could sync it again in itunes thinking that the music would reappear. But i can't do that cause my ipod isn't showing up in I-tunes. I double checked to make sure it's plugged up, but nothing? How do I get I-tunes and the computer to recogize my i-pod.
    PLEAS HELP

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
Then try with the iPod in forced disk mode.

    Still no joy, see these.

  • Lost i-Tunes and need to get all my music back onto it

Hi everybody, I really need some help! Last week my computer crashed and I lost every files I have had, so basically I have bought a new computer with nothing on it. The last two days I have been installing new files and other things. Now the thing is all my music is still on my I-pod (Ipod nano 2nd gen), how do I put all my music from my i-pod back onto a new i-tunes without losing the music?
Your help will be greatly appreciated!
    Blake

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • I have paid for itunes match and have now lost all my music of my iphone except what I paid for from itunes, 964 songs gone not at all happy.  Can anyone help

I have paid for itunes match and have now lost all my music off my iphone except what I paid for from itunes, 964 songs gone into the cloud. Can anyone help please?

Enabling iTunes Match does not delete music from your computer. Why do you think it is now not in the iTunes library if it was before? If all of your music was in the iTunes library then it is also now in the cloud if iTunes has completed it's scan and all the music meets the match requirements. Enable the iCloud Status column in the iTunes browser by switching to Song view and pulling down View > View Options. Select iCloud Status then close the small window. Sort on the new column. Your music should be listed as "purchased," "matched" and "uploaded." Some tracks may be "ineligible." Post back and let us know.

  • After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all my music (Cds that I had downloaded into itunes) except the once I had purchased from the itunes store. Can anyone help? Do you know what might have happened?

After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all the music that I had downloaded from my Cds. It was a lot of music! All I still have is the music that I had purchased in the itunes store. And before you asked. No, I did not have a backup. Never got around to do it.
Does anyone of you have an idea if and how I can maybe get my music back?
Your help is very much appreciated. Would it help if I recover my computer from an earlier date?? I am not even sure if I make sense here.

Hi - I seem to have a similar problem. I was prompted to update to iPhoto 11 yesterday (don't know why yesterday, I'm in iPhoto all the time). So I followed the instructions, library updated, all existing events and albums are there. I uploaded some more pictures and created a few new albums and did some new year spring cleaning, moving stuff around etc. And I started making a calendar.
I've opened it up today, my calendar is still there as are all the new events, but the pictures are empty outlines. If I open up a picture I just get the "!" but I can still see the thumbnails showing in the slider in the bottom - I don't know if that means the source files must still be there somewhere, or if it just means it captured thumbnails yesterday.
I've gone into it via "show package contents" and there just don't seem to be any masters for an upload yesterday. I also just had a look in the last import folder, because of a comment from someone above. As I scrolled down through the folder the images were there and literally disappeared in front of me - by which I mean, the thumbnails were there as I scrolled down and then would turn into empty outlines...!
All my old folders are still there, thankfully (although they're of course the ones that are also all safely back up).
Although I have a timecapsule, my photo library is too big to keep on my hard drive, so I keep it on an external drive - so it only gets backed up when I do it manually (thanks Apple for that, I will never understand why it was designed to work - or not work - that way). So if the pictures have been lost then they are gone for good which is super-frustrating (I just got back from South Korea and was in the middle of sorting out all my shots from that trip).  It seems that this can only have happened because of the update - I should have known better than to have pressed yes.
If you have any ideas, I'd be most grateful!
    Regards
    R

  • Help! I've lost all my music

Help! I've lost all my music! I moved abroad and copied all of my cds to my new ipod touch 3rd. Old computer stored in states. Now I'm in Italy with a new laptop. and when I signed decided to down an app, i had to reinstall itunes, not only did i fail to get app, all my old downloads except one recent purchase (not downlad)  are gone. Help! 40 years of music, much of it no longer available. Took weeks to down all.

There is nothing you can now except sync/restore the iPod on the old computer.  An iPod can only sync to one iTunes library/computer.  If you sync the iPod to another library, iTunes will erase the iPod and replace its contents with what is in the itunes library of new computer.

  • HT204053 I've lost all the music on my computer in the main music section of my i tunes, i have it all on my phone but i want it back on my computer to. Every time i try to play a song it tells me it can't locate the song. I'm backed up to the cloud so ho

ok, i lost all the music on my powerbook in i tunes, it tells me it can't locate any of the songs. I'm backed up to the cloud so how do i get my music back? I have it on my iphone what to do?

Your iCloud backup doesn't contain your music.  It will restore music purchased from the iTunes store to your iOS device if you restore the backup by redownloading it from the iTunes store.  You can also redownload music purchased from the iTunes store to your iTunes library on your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519.  This will not recover music from other sources.
To transfer music from your phone to your computer, you will need to extract it using 3rd party software such as Touch Copy.

  • I recently downloaded itunes 10.5 and have lost all my music. How do I retrieve it? Help!

I recently downloaded itunes 10.5 and have lost all my music.  How do i retrieve it? Help!

shouldnt be too hard for them to not have sync as the default
Not difficult at all but iTunes is meant to be very simple to use. No one would know how to sync their music if the default was to not sync it.
many people will have an ipod that hoops up to itunes for first time and then will sync up and lose all songs
One big reason to make regular backups.
