HELP - Lost my entire site, iweb opens as if never used!

Hello,
Lat time I published my site was Christmas eve and today when I tried to launch iweb it opens as if it was never used. I shut my computer down after Xmas Eve and just turned it back on. I really dont know where to look or what to do I am really freaking out as I have spent HOURS building my site and would hate to rebuild it from scratch.
Why would iweb do this? Where can I find the saved files?
Kristi

Kristi ~ Your Public Profile indicates you're using Mac OS X (10.5.8) (Leopard) which has Time Machine. And there are plenty of other backup alternatives such as:

Will this download be able to resort the site into iweb?
No — iWeb can't import published HTML.
Although the situation doesn't look good, don't give up yet — perhaps someone else here will chip in with a suggestion.

  • HELP!!!!  IWEB  UPLOADS FOREVER - IT NEVER FINISHES UPLOADING

I have been working on iweb - problem free - for several weeks. Suddenly, whenever I try to upload, it will not finish. Right now, it has been uploading for 6 hours. If I try to quit iweb, it says, "sure you want to quit, still uploading." I did add a bunch of material - but just some small graphics and minimal text. And i did some re-organizing of my site. Help...
I was thinking, maybe I should remove every page that is unnecessary - I have a few extra pages that I use as templates. However, if I did this, is there a way I can back it up and feel confident that I'll get those pages back?
Does making a copy of the "DOMAIN" file work - as a backup? I have found that when i publish to a folder, this presents more problems than anything else. I can't seem to restore when I do this,
Is my uploading problem related to idisk? I do not use idisk for anything else except my site. Any help would really be appreciated: I am on the verge of completing my site and my site is tied into my work and income. thank you much

Making a copy of the Domain file is the ONLY way of backing up your iWeb work. Publishing your site to folder DOES NOT constitute a backup in any way. You should backup your Domain file NOW before proceeding.
After you have backed up your Domain file and put it in a safe place, I'd like you to try something with me... a little experiment if you are willing.
When you are ready and ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE BACKED UP YOUR DOMAIN FILE, follow these steps...
    1. Open up iWeb. See your sites in the window, right?
    2. Keeping iWeb open, now go and find your Domain file in the following folder pathway: /Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
    3. Drag the Domain file into the trash but DO NOT EMPTY THE TRASH.
    4. Now go back to the open iWeb application. Click on File>Save.
    5. iWeb should complain that your Domain file is in the trash and offer to save another copy for you in the original location. Click okay and let it save a new Domain file for you.
    6. Now quit iWeb and then relaunch it. Do you see your sites listed still? You should.
    7. Try to publish and see if you notice any improvement.
    8. Please report back with your results.
REMEMBER...if at any point something does not seem to work, your original Domain file is sitting in the trash ready for you to drag back to its original location. You should also have a backup copy of this as I advised before.
    Let me know what happens.

    It's often asked and answered.
Search this forum for similar disasters : lost iweb file
The answer usually is No. You'll have to start from scratch. Unless you have a backup.

    No.

  • I am an artist who built my site on iWeb 08. Although I have easily been able to transfer to Godaddy, my ability to publish is limited. I must upload my entire site and it is time consuming. How do I convert to iWeb 09 and is this easy to do?

Help! I am an artist who had my site professionally designed on iWeb 08. Although I have  been able to transfer to Godaddy, my ability to publish is limited. I must upload my entire site and it is time consuming.  I was advised to update to IWeb 09 (which I could get, I think? from Amazon) because it has a built- in option to publish to any FTP. How do I convert my 08 folder to an 09 folder?  Will it convert correctly?  I know eventually I will need to rebuilt the site, but I would like to use this option for awhile to buy time. Is this feasible? I currently own a Mac Pro.

Its just a question of installing the later version of iWeb from the iLife disk and opening your website in that version. Its a good idea to have a backup of your Domain.sites2 file before doing this. See this page for its location...

  • HT4864 Help? Need to transfer iWeb site to iCloud...

Hello. Does anyone know how to transfer my website from iWeb to iCloud? The url is http://www.daveouanophotography.com . Unfortunately, I'm pretty computer illiterate and I'm afraid my entire site will be lost in June. Help! Thanks, Dave

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Unfortunately you cannot transfer your website to iCloud, iCloud does not offer an alternative for publishing websites like MobileMe did. You will need to find yourself a third-party web host, to host your site.
I wouldn't worry too much about losing your website, assuming you have made it in iWeb, it should still be there and you should still be able to publish it to another location once you have found one.

I can't open my iTunes because it says MSVCR80.dll was not found. What can I do? Have I lost my entire library? Thank you for any help.

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • Iweb opens with a blank default page..where has my site gone?

I have been using iweb to run a web site for almost 18months. Yesterday I tried out "iwebsites" which I downloaded from apple. It suggested I can run multiple sites and a friend wants me to run one for her. Originally I was advised to set up a family pack dot mac account which would let me have more than one site . I upgraded my single user account. However I find that I can only publish with one domain name, hence the reason I looked at iwebsites. However, since trying it out I find that when I go to update my site , iwb opens a blank default page and my listing for my original site is gone. Where has it gone? I publish all to iweb & I don't think I have published to a folder.I can't find my default page at all and think I may have to redesign the site from scratch. Please help!I can still see my site if I visit it , here is the address:
    http://web.mac.com/cldominic/Site/clairedominicfamilyphotography.co.uk.html
But now I want to continue building it and can access the iweb default page to build on it.
    Please someone advise,
    Thanks
    Claire

Sorry to sound totally stupid but I think I have tried this . However I may not have done it correctly. When I enter the info what do I type? The http:// address or the name of the site. I haven't had much luck so far.

  • Please help!! Ive suddenly lost my entire iPhoto library..says it doesn't exist although I can see the photos all in grey-but also the menu is in grey, can't do anything

Please can anyone help! Ive suddenly lost my entire iPhoto library while I wss cleaning up…sometimes I can find them, they're there but all in grey and so is the menu for iPhoto…so I can't open or do anything…

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • IWeb won't publish changed pages, just entire site

Hi folks, I have iWeb 09 and use ME as my webhost. I'm having an issues when I create additional pages iweb now publishes the entire site and not just changes. In the past published pages were blue and changed pages were red, now all pages stay red even after a successful site update.
of course this is rather annoying and time consuming as i have several gigs on my site, when only changing 1 page it takes hours to publish.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Jon

    David:
I just discovered one reason the iWeb keeps displaying icons red when publishing to a folder.
How are you publishing the site? To a folder and then uploading via an FTP client? If that's the case then are you deleting that folder after you upload? Again if that's the case then that's the problem. When publishing to a folder iWeb looks for for a plist file something like this: assets.file/--localhost-Users-toad-WSM%20Input-Helper%20Site-.plist. If that file is missing from the folder iWeb thinks this is a first time publication and publishes all the pages. You need to create a permanent folder to publish the site to and not delete between edits and republications. This is what it should look like:
Bottom line: don't delete the site and files after publishing to a folder.

  • I am having a problem publishing iWeb9 to Blue Host. Program publishes but wants to republish entire site each time rather than changes. Help?

I use iWeb 9, for now, to publish a 1.45 GB website. I have moved to Blue Host and the site is publishing. But, after publishing and quitting iWeb, when I reopen the program it acts as if the entire site needs to be republished. (All pages are once again red.) While it recognizes the site exists, it tells me that it will republish the entire site, which considering the size is very problematical. It takes about seven hours. Blue Host's position, which is probably valid, is since it is publishing to the hosting site, they have no way to help. I really don't want to have to rebuild the site for scratch with new software at this point because that will be a time consuming job. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When iWeb creates a "site" it produces a folder of all the required files and an external index.html file. These two are uploaded to the root folder on the server by the iWeb FTP.
If the "public_html" folder is the root folder, the directory/path field should be left blank otherwise, the next time you upload files, they will be uploaded to the "site" folder and not the root folder. This means that you will have two versions of your site - one inside the other.
The problem is that most support techs don't seem to understand the above since it is not the "normal" way to structure a website.
The other way to publish files is shown here...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/URLs-Favicons.html
This is more in line with the "normal" method of publishing sites but will break certain links such as in the case of the RSS feed - if any.
iWeb also produces an internal index.html file which is a replica of the external one. Unlike most other websites, this index.html file is NOT the one for the "Home" page but merely a redirect to it. This is what confuses tech support people!

  • IWeb opens but my site won't

I am a Photographer and I use iWeb to publish online contact sheets for my clients. Basically for each job I complete I copy my existing domain.sites file to a new folder rename it add my content publish it to the web and I'm good to go.
Well for the site in question which is a rather large one 56 galleries each with over 40 photos that was nearly complete and I was trying to put the finishing touches on, I click to open it and iWeb opens but the site does not. iWeb is running I can open the inspector window the font window image adjust, and color windows just not the window with my site in it. Hmmmm any ideas anyone??
I can go back and create a new site from a different file and it opens fine. But this one site wont open? I've tried deleting the prefs in the User file, and deleting the Cache from the user file copying the file to another location, opening my backup copy. Also when I opened it to day for the first time I got the iWeb tutorial window.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Michael

Try deleting the prefs again - Home Folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist
Restart your Mac and run Disk Utility to repair permissions.
If this doesn't work you need to consider the possibility that the domain file is corrupt.
When you say you are duplicating the domain file to another folder and adding content to that, are you deleting any content from this file as well as adding new?

    According to Google :
"I'd like to transfer my iweb site formerly published by me moving in the FTP host with 1and1 ... I know nothing ... help"
Since you use iWeb 08 you have to publish to a folder on your desktop and upload that to your new server with an ftp application.
You can read all about it in this forum as it has been discussed several times a day, every day for the past year when it was announced that MMe would end.
1and1 has the instructions how to connect to your new server :

  • I have recently had to fire my web designer who was using iWeb.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the site to open in iWeb on my new MacBook Pro.  Is there a way?

I have recently had to fire my web designer who was using iWeb.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the site to open in iWeb on my new MacBook Pro.  Is there a way?

Firstly iWeb CAN'T IMPORT any kind of published html code as it has no import facility.  You can however add html code, javascript and css by selecting the html snippet and placing it on your page the entering the code in here and clicking on Apply.  You DO NOT create a shape as you say - you use the html snippet and place your code in there.
There are not really a lot of ways in which you can write code - if you want to enter small amounts of code, then you would use an ordinary text editor to do this such as Text Edit on a Mac or Text Wrangler.  If you want to add code to iWeb like this, then you would either use the html snippet method in iWeb itself or you would have to publish the site to a local folder from iWeb and open the relevant html page with a text editor and add the additional code in this way and then publish.  However, if he decided to add the code with a text editor, then you would have to upload the pages directly to the server using an ftp client - if you try to upload the site directly from iWeb, all the extra code will be overwritten.
As for checking whether the site was created using iWeb, all you need do is view the site in Safari and then click on View and then select View Source Code and it will tell you.
Even thoough extra code was added to the site and he might well have done this by publishing to a local folder and adding the code with a text editor, he should still have the domain file for the site too.
Ask again.  I'm sure that for adding quick code, most would not want to use programmes such as Dreamweaver, but a simple text editor will suffice.  As OT already said, if he claims that he does not have the domain.sites file, then try Flux 4 which is a web design programme and has full import facilities.  At least this way, if he just gives you the published version of the site, you have some way of opening it.
You can download a free trial of Flux 4 and you can also purchase the full version from the Mac App Store if you decide you like it.
