HELP! Mac G4 Finder flashes off and on, files close
My sturdy mac G4 running OSX 10.4.11 has developed a weird thing where the finder flashes off and on, the files flash off all together as if someone was resetting the finder. I ran disk warrior and utilities but still doing the same thing. Any suggestions? Never had virus. Whaats up?
Hi greenteam, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It's likely some 3rd Party APP that got broken by the recent QT or Security update.
Stuffit AVR has been a big one, if you have that use the Pref Pane to turn it off, but others have been implicated too. Check System Preferences for a Stuffit Pref Pane and disable AVR.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it is some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

My mac randomly turned off last night had some trouble with an uncertified usb cable that I was trying to charge my iphone 5S with but it came up with that message of not being able to charge with this accessory or something so i plugged it into my mac thinking it was my plug to charge my phone then like 5 mins later my mac just randomly turns off and it did have like 90% batt but i still plugged it back in thinking it was just being wierd but then i pressed the power button after it being plugged into my mac and it wouldnt even turn on no fan starts or anything and now the colour of the charger light is very faint and is almost flickering between green and amber, please help me out I dont want to pay loads of money for something that I might be able to fix?!?!?!
I actually just fixed it. Here is what to do;
1. Unplug everything from your computer.
2. Take off the bottom of your MacBook / Pro / Air. (There are usually 3 screws that are longer than the rest near the vent, remember where they go.)
3. Carefully unplug the battery from the logic board.
4. Wait 10 seconds.
5. Plug the battery back into the logic board.
6. Put the bottom cover back on.
7. Reboot the computer holding the "Option" key.
It's not exactly what I did but it should work. If it doesn't work, what I really did was unplug the battery and then plugged my charger into the computer, the fans started spinning and then it shut off again. Then I plugged the battery back in, put the bottom on (with no screws), and tried booting up again. The Apple chime played and then the computer shut off. So I tried booting again holding the "Option" key and it booted up like normal. I then restarted my computer to make sure it is back to normal and it is.
Wow what a relief. I was really scared there for a minute.
*And for everyones information I was using a Belkin USB cable but it had never done that before. -
Refurbished iPod touch 3rd gen won't start. Just got it today to replace my broken one. It freezes at the screen with the apple logo, then flashes off and tries to restart again. Help!
I have tried holding the power home button but all that does is turn it off. When I try to start it again it goes into the same loop.

Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on
All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david
If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.

Mac book pro,
Turns off and goes under protection, sometimes without any specific motivation, but most of the time when an External monitor is pluged-in.
I use it when I work with final cut pro, and this problem it's becoming huge and changing my workplans....
It can turns off also 10 times in two hours.
In many forums I read that the CPU temp could be the problem, but I've checked it and It's always around 62°-68°....
In some others they say that the new RAM could be the problem too.
Is anybody able to help me? (Underneath you can check the Panic Report and my mac informations)
Thank you so much.
Antonio

Why are my icons flashing off and on?
My I icons flash off and come back is about a second. This repeats about every minute as if it is stuck in a loop.
Well, I too had a case of the "flashing icons" beginning a week after downloading Maverick. Flashed about every 1-2 minutes. I asked Mac support about this through a "chat" and received about 2 pages of tutorial info from them that was so loaded with "geek speak" and tech terms, I was about to throw myself over the railing of my 2 story apartment. At 63, there was no way I could follow this "stuff" without probably destroying my MAC and tearing out what little hair I have left.
None of it mentioned playing with Google by the way.
One option was simple however: Re-download Maverick and see if that does it. Frankly, I like the practical ideas. So I went back to the App Store and re-downloaded Maverick last night, and all is fine. No sluggishness, not that I had any to begin with, no loss of data, no nothin'! Just smooth sailing. Give it a try.....there's nothing to lose. -
Screen flashes off and on - ideapad flex 10
Hi all,
Hoping for some help from the experts! My ideapad flex 10 has over the last month starting flashing off and on randoming during use. The screen is still there just cant see it. Also mouse seems to work but becomes impossible to use as flashes nonestop until you manage to restart it. Flashes quickly and seems to black completely but helps when i shake the mouse to get the screen for a second or so.
Any help would be gratefully received!Sigh Is it possible that I am the only one seeing this?

Monitor is flashing off and on
I just started up my computer this morning and my monitor (30"cinema) was flashing off and on. I have my Cinema preference setting to "turn the display on and off". I managed to keep it on long enough to change to "does nothing" so it stays on, but I really need that functionality for rendering overnight and not leaving the display on.
I checked the button and nothing is blocking it. Could it really just burn out if I never actually use it more than maybe 10 times? Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this?
thanks,
Dave<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2811>
Sometimes just unplugging the display from power and the computer for a few minutes will fix things. -
An anyone help me to find the difference and relation between the following
Hi,
can anyone help me to find the difference and relation between the following methods of Swing :
a) validate()
b) invalidate()
c) revalidate()
d) repaint()You'd be far ahead by opening up the API and Java turorial and your course book and learning for yourself, rather than, asking other to do your homework for you.
But if you have andwers already to go, then post them and ask if you have drawn appropriate conclusions. -
HT1481 Ipod nano flashes off and on and will not reset.
This has been such a mess. This was a Christmas present and I can't get it to work. How do I get this to work?!!! This is my first Apple product and I am not happy. The Ipod nano just flashes off and on. I have downloaded itunes but nothing has happened; it just flashes off and on with the Apple symbol on the screen. How do I fix this?!!
Hello janicon,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPod nano. I would be concerned and frustrated with this as well.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Will not turn on or screen remains dark" and "Screen is unresponsive and displays Apple logo or white screen" in the following article. If you are also not seeing your iPod in iTunes when your have your iPod connected, I recommend the section titled "iPod not recognized by iTunes or computer."

Yesterday, when I set up my new out of the box Apple TV, it seemed to work fine. Seemless set up, I was able to stream my itunes from my conputer. Now tonight, the unit flashes off and on when I started it up. What should I do?
I have 2 Apple TV's one works fine on 4.1.1 software. The other I updated and now any of my video files that have 6 channels of audio, play no sound. And All the movie categories are appearing all wrong. In comparison the other apple tv still plays the audio fine and the categories appear normal.
Is anyone having this issue, if your not streaming video files from you peronal library with multi channel audio, you might not know you have a problem. My simple 2 channel audio files play fine. -
Websites I've loaded onto my home screen using the + to home screen option won't delete. I press the icons. Wobbles then freezes and homescreen uploads flash off and on (apps too but I can delete them from manage storage)
i need to reboot to stop it and I'm stuck with loads of homescreen icons on my iPadYou're welcome. Glad to hear you got it sorted out. If you like using website icons you can bookmark them as Favorites and they'll be on your Safari page instead of your homescreen and they're much easier to get rid of. Also you could turn on Favorites bar by going to settings> Safari> show Favorites bar> on. See screenshot.

My Mac won't install mpkg and pkg files.
My Mac won't install mpkg and pkg files. Whenever I double-click an pkg or mpkg file, I get the dialog box to "choose an application" to open it. After some searching, I discovered I do not have the installer.app. I tried to Repair Disk from my Snow Leopard DVD but every time it boots from the DVD, my computer crashes. Any suggestions?
You have the installer app. It is located in /System/Library/CoreServices.
Use the finder's Go menu, Go to Folder... and type /System/Library/CoreServices to open the CoreServices folder. You should see it in there. If you do not see it there then that would beg the question what else might be missing and perphas you need to do an update (re)install (or restore form a hopefully good backup).
To try to reassoicatate .[m]pkl's with the Installer, take one of your .[m]pkg's and do a finder Get Info on it and set the Open with... to the Installer app. If the Installer app is not shown use Other... at the bottom of the list to navigate to the CoreServices folder and select Installer. Then click the Change All... button.
I am not sure why your [.m]pkgs would have lost their Launch Services association with Installer in the first place (unless it really is missing). -
