Help - Macbook plastic chasis failure/split

Hello
Hoping someone can help me out here.
I purchased a MacBook in January and have been delighted with it thus far. Only problem is yesterday part of the chasis of the laptop split as I was typing.
Usuall I'd just take it back to where I purchased it but I'm going travelling in 5 days and just dont have the time to take it in for them to just send it off (I need my laptop with me).
I was hoping to try and contact apple direct to bring this issue to their attention and to try and get some agreement that they will fix it when I get back in December. But it seems getting hold of an email address for apple customer service is next to impossible.
The laptop has had no bangs or scratches but has been used quite a lot so I suspect other users must of encountered this problem.
I have taken pictures of the chasis split that I can email to anyone who is interested or can help.
Keen to get advice on how I can best resolve this issue with my limitations (not being able to send off the laptop till December).
Kind Regards
Andrew

If the split is along the edge of the palm rest where the magnet bar hits the case, Apple will replace the case free of charge because it's a known defect/problem. Mine was replaced in 10 minutes while I waited - it wasn't sent anywhere.
Also, unless you are going to Antarctica, the chances are good there will be an Apple Store or Authorized Service Center that can order the case and replace it for you.
Can you describe where the split is?

Please help, I am trying to split a HD mp4 video into two parts using Quicktime 10.2, running Mountain Lion. I use trim then export but it doesn't give the movie option as a format. What would you suggest i do?

I'm not sure why you're using a FAT32 drive, but using ExFAT instead of FAT32 would be a better overall choice as it doesn't have the 4 Gig limit.

  • I need help in Fixing my Hp Split x2

I need help in fixing my hp split x2. I got it with windows 8 but i upgraded to Windows 8.1. sine then I stop accessing my D:/ drive ( 500gb HDD)on which I stored data. Besides, I get DCP watchdog violation Error each time I disconnect the tablet and reconnet it. I also get another error message: DCP_DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. Can somebody help me out?

    Hi Alsaab73,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your and getting an error message. The HDD that are you using, I would need the model number. Have you looked in the device manager to see if there is a conflict with the driver installed? It might be listed under the USB devices? Have you tried a different port on the Notebook?  Right clicking an updating the driver might be all that is needed.
As per the description of the issue you get error DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION.
Is the issue confined to any particular game or a certain function you are choosing on the Notebook?
The First thing you need to try is disable any firewalls or virus protection and restart the Notebook.
If that does not helps try these steps from Microsoft.
Boot the computer using the Windows 8 bootable DVD.
On the Install Now screen click on Repair your computer.
You will then see a blue screen and an option to choose.
Click on Advanced Options and then click on Troubleshoot.
Click on Automatic Repair and follow the prompted instructions.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • I need iMovie but can't upgrade to Mavericks (on a MacBook plastic case early 2008, running 10.6.8)

I used to have IMovie on my MacBook (plastic case early 2008), running 10.5.8.
Then I upgraded to 10.6.8, and added extra memory, it's 2 GB now. Thus I lost  iLife, that I used to have.
I tried to purchase iMovie 11 but it requires 10.9 or higher.
Unfortunately I cannot upgrade, because my Mac Book is too old (only aluminium case ones from late 2088 can upgrade).
    So...what should I do?
Look for older versions of iLife/iMovie, but where do I get them?
Or can I get iMovie 6 and the rest of iLife from my old installation disks (10.5.8) of when I purchased the MacBook? And how do I do that?

    Thanks!
iLife '09 apparently requires 4 GB and I only have 2. I'll see if I can find the DVD that had to be in my original machine box.

Don't worry, there is nothing wrong with your computer. I have the same issue, and it is a bug. Sometimes a restart solves it. Sometimes and if you use subtitles, you will see the first line being displayed but the second one not, etc.
I have reported that to Apple and there is hope for a fix.

  • Macbook Air Boot failure after SMC reset. HELP.

    Hi all.
So, my brand new macbook air may have encountered some water or something, i seriously dont know, but i booted it up this morning and the fan was rather loud, like seriously loud, so i check out activity monitor and the CPU usage was a solid 80% consistently even with no applications running. So i go for an SMC reset, and as i do the reset the charger falls out, literally (useless magnets), anyway i go to turn it on, and all that happens is the LED on the magsafe goes from orange to green then back to orange with no sound, no "tone", no nothing: dead silence.
Im a little concerned to take it in to an apple store as this alleged encounter with liquid that i was told about by my brother makes me fear that the LCI's will make it out of warranty.
I mean it was working fine about ten minutes ago and so surely some wierd SMC hitch cant have completely mucked up the whole thing?
Its the latest model (as in early 2014).
    Thanks in advance
    Billy

Try a PRAM reset. If that doesnt work, reboot back into that same recovery partition and reinstall the OS, you can use either your old disk or an internet recovery. You will most likely loose your data however so you may want to try and back it up. You can do so through another Mac computer with either an ethernet/firewire cable and an app called "Migration Assistant".
Here are a couple articles that may help:

  • Need to export Iphoto library from iPhone4, synced Macbook hard drive failure. Now only medium is windows based. Please help!!!

    Hello all,
I had my iPhone 4 synced to a Macbook and was using iTunes and iPhoto for my media. Well the hard drive in my Macbook crashed and now all of my Photos and Music are only on my iPhone. How can i extract the iPhoto library/albums from the phone. My secondary concern is retrieving the Music. the music was imported to my original iTunes via CD's and USB drives but apperantly i can only transfer music that was purchased via iTunes store? I really dont want to roll the dice my buying a new Macbook just to hope that this will be the answer.
    Thanks.

One of the reasons why maintaining a backup of the important data on your computer is important.
There are some 3rd party utilities that provide for transferring such data in the opposite direction - music that was not purchased from the iTunes store and for photos that were transferred from your computer.
Photos transferred from your computer are optimized for viewing on the iPhone as part of the iTunes sync/transfer process - the original resolution of these photos is reduced. When transferring these photos in the opposite direction, the original resolution of these photos will be lost.

  • Macbook pro Freezes, Screen splits into two half, scrambled..

    Hi,
Just bought a new Macbook Pro 15.4, 2 Ghz i7 processor, AMD Raedon HD 6490M 256 Mb Video, 4 Gb Memory...
After Three days, whenever I try to play a video, in quicktime or vlc or just load a video song on virtual dj,
the screen just freezes and splits into two. The Force quit doesnt work.
The only thing that works is "Hold the power button for three seconds."
    Please help..
    Thank you

I have the same issue. This began before I installed Lion OSx. Happens randomly and not connected to any particular application. Here are some screen shots. It happens at least two times a day and is getting very frustrating. Taking it to the genius bar this weekend.
All I can say is that it began after i applied some major updates (most probably the ones to fix the freeze issues that were cropping up on these new macbooks when they were launched). This is only my observation.

  • HELP Macbook display just stopped!!

    Dear All,
Last night while I was working on Macbook (black one), the screen just suddenly went black. I was listening to music at the time and the speakers went off just a split second before that.
The power was still on, and battery fully charged, sleep light was still working but Mac display and the apple on the back were black/off.
I tried to restart, holding power key 3 seconds, and it turned off with a soft click, but when I turned it back on again, I do hear the sound of the dvd rom turning on, but after that nothing. Screen still black, sleep light still on.
Who can help my Mac to recover? I've had it since June. Problem is that I live in Rwanda and can't just pop out to a macstore on the corner.
Thanks for any help and suggestions

    Hi rwandamac,
    welcome to macbook forum.
    try to reset PRAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
And play with F1 (reduce brightness) and F2 (increase brightness).
If the screen still pitch black, I'm afraid your lcd or inverter failed, and it required apple authorized technician to fix that (doesn't have to be apple store guy).
And if that wasn't user abused damage, it will covered by apple.
    Good Luck.
ps: do check your local rwanda apple distributor policy.

  • HELP : MacBook will not start !! Well, actually ...

Hello to you all Apple/Mac lovers ,
As the title said, my MacBook has gone wild. Here's the thing : I start it up, the gray apple appears and the spinning wheel under it. After an unusually long time of spinning, my computer ... shuts down. And that's it. Hopefully one of you will be able to fix it, usin the info below.
I tried to fix it, and here's what I did :
    - I first used the Apple Hardware test (by inserting the installation DVD and pressing D on start up) : no errors detected.
    - Then I used the disk utility (by inserting the installation DVD and pressing C on start up) : there, it said that there was an "Invalid sibling link", and that it couldn't complete the verification or repair because "The underlying task reported failure on exit".
    - Lastly I used the "Startup Disk" application (found with the Disk Utility) and it first showed me 3 things : the Mac OS 10.5.3 folder from my hard disk (which is what it usually uses), the Mac OS 10.4.8 Install Disk, and then a Network Startup (but that's not gonna work). However it was quite late in the night so I chose the option "Turn Off" (in one of the top menus) and went to bed.
The next morning I repeated the previous procedure but this time the Leopard folder did not show up !! This is where I am at right now. Here are what seem to be my options :
    - Re-install 10.4.8 (it will store 10.5.3 in a folder called "Previous System"). It says that I will not be able to boot from there anymore - is that true ? I should like to, because if the system needs to erase all data from my hard disk, then I will need to use my Time Machine backup from my external HD (and therefore will need Leopard).
    - Wait for my dad to bring me the Leopard Install DVD (he'll be there next Sunday, 29th of June) from which I will be able to re-install Leopard.
Now I really do not know what is the problem - and if re-installing the OS will solve anything. There is still this strange Hard drive error - any idea if 1. that is the cause of the problem 2. what it means 3. If I need to fix it 4. how do I do that ?
Thanks for all your advice and time ,
    #Charles

Your idea, Simon, seems best in my case. Now just out of curiosity - you say that I can recover all my files once I get back to Leopard using Time Machine, but will I also recover preferences/settings, from system preferences to application settings ? My question really is : is there anything I will not be able to recover ?
Anyways, now on to you adsfushi72. You say I need to get my "important files off the hard drives" - you mean I need to back them up in case my hard drive is broken and will need to be re-formatted in the process of re-installing, right ? Well the entirety of it is backed up on another, external hard drive, using Time Machine. The last backup was about 17 minutes before the problem appeared so all I could lose in the process is a few lines of text I typed in between. I love Apple ...
And how about safe/verbose modes ? What exactly are they ? I've used safe mode on a PC before, but I don't know how to start up in that mode on a Mac, what it exactly does or is, how to handle it, and why I would do that right now - I'm not saying I don't feel like doing it, I just want to know what information it could give me or in what way(s) it could help solve my problem. Same applies to verbose mode.
Lastly, a little update : Now when I start up my MacBook I see the Flashing "?" on a folder, which means it can't find a system folder to boot from - right ? So then I start up with alt/option pressed - and it does not detect any drive. When I insert the Mac OS X install Disk is only sees that. Is the invalid sibling link of my hard drive causing it to be unusable the system to boot from or what ?
The weirdest part is that now the hard drive seems to be absent. Before, it was there but I couldn't boot from it - since it seems to be damaged -, but now it doesn't even recognize or see it anymore. It seems the repair attempt is what made it change that way ... anyways thanks for all your ideas .

  • Plastic Hinge "Cover" Splitting Apart

The black plastic piece (thats visible when closed) of my MBP is splitting apart. I haven't dropped my macbook, or damaged it in any other way.
Is this covered by warranty? I didn't purchase applecare, but instead purchased the Best Buy black protection that covers accidental damage and such. They'll repair it, but it'll be out for 2-4 weeks. I use my MBP for work, so that's not a possibility.

    Hi
Sorry to hear you are having problems, quite alarming to find those cracks appearing! I just had to have a look at mine after seeing your picture but I am OK at the moment.
You have from new a years warranty which will cover such problems. Sadly it will mean that it will have to go back to Apple to be fixed unless you can get them to agree to an exchange. Your best bet is to go to your nearest Apple Store and have a word. It might be worth booking an appointment then you won't have to hang around to see someone.
Here is a link to the UK Genius Bar appointments, there are ones for each country:

All the best and hope it is sorted for you.

  • Charger cord and macbook plastic question

First question. My charger cord seemed to get pretty hot near the connector and slowly split and melted, revealing a bare wire. Now the connection is getting flaky and I have to keep it in a certain position to keep it working. I had it replaced before, so I went into the apple store and tried to have it replaced again but was told to buy a new one as my warranty was up (which is odd because my warranty was up the last time I had it replaced). Is it safe to continue using it?
My second question is about the plastic on the MacBook. Over time a bit of the plastic has broken off the edges. I was told this was a common problem with plastic MacBooks. The person who uses it the most says she is getting shocked by the places where the plastic is missing. I don't know whether this is electricity from the laptop or just static. She says it's most commonly the a spot above the screen and sometimes to the lower right of the keyboard. Is there any way to cover these up?

  • Please help -- Macbook Pro 13 is suddenly sloooowww ....

    Can someone please help ??
I have a Macbook Pro (13 in.) Mid-2010 which is running Mountain Lion OS X Version 10.8.2 (12C60).    I have had this computer for over 2 years and have NEVER had a problem with it and have loved it until 2 - 3 weeks ago, it suddenly started giving me problems.  I have never cracked open the inside of any computer, but am seriously considering attempting to replace my hard drive (I've read so many different potential issues that may be the reason for my macbook problems, the hard drive disk being one -- not really sure why i'm leaning towards that one, but I'm desperate).
    Here's What's Going On:
    1. I frequently am getting the spinning beachball that will spin for, sometimes, seconds and sometimes SEVERAL minutes. The spinny beachball has been a rare occurrence in the past, but when I used to get it, I could just ForceQuit the application and restart it - problem solved..... NOW, I am not able to use ForceQuit. When I attempt to access the ForceQuit menu, it will not appear until the freeze/beachball problem has stopped and so at that point, there is no need to quit the app.
    2. Starting my computer has become REDICULOUSLY SLOW. The slow startup problem began occurring at the same time as the beachballs. I'm getting to the white screen with the apple, and that's where it stays for anywhere from 15 - 45 minutes. There have been times that I tried to start it up but it took such a long time so I powered it down while it was still on the white/apple screen and then powered it back up -- I didn't know if this may be part of the reason for the REALLY long startup times (45 minutes).    But either way, best case scenario, it takes at least 15 - 20 minutes before my desktop appears.
    3. Also, this may or may not be related, but there have been 2 occasions during this time where my laptop sound basically became disfunctional. I was not able to get any sound and lost the option to adjust the sound (when i tried, the little image of the speaker with the cross sign going through it would appear). Similarly, on a different occasion, the same thing happened with the keyboard backlighting - it is not working and it does not allow me to adjust the controls, same as the sound issue.
Like I said, I don't know a whole lot of computers, but this is what I've tried so far.  - I cleared up some space on the hard drive (currently 101 out of 250 GB are free).   - I did the Disk Utility >> First Aid >> Repair Disk Permissions.   - I've copied all my files to an external drive, AND was going to try to Restore my computer to factory settings with the OS X (Snow Leopard) Installation Disc that came with my computer, BUT when I tried it gave me the following message:  "You Can't Use This Version Of The Application 'Install Mac OS X' with this version of OS X. You have Install Mac OS X 23.1.1".   .... so, I guess I can't override Mountain Lion with Snow Leopard (?).....    And that's pretty much it.  Now I'm considering replacing the hard drive while crossing my fingers.
OH YEAH, I forgot to mention.... and I'm not 100% on this ... but my problems started occurring in early October.... wasn't there a Mountain Lion update around that time???   It seems like I did an update around that time, but i could be wrong AND it may not be the problem .....    So....
IS THIS HAPPENING TO ANYONE ELSE ??
ANYONE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE SYMPTOMS I PROVIDED AND GIVE A DIAGNOSTIC OPINION OR OFFER SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT I SHOULD DO NEXT ??
ANY HELP AND ALL SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED  !!

That is precisely what my mid-2010 MacBoook Pro 13 was doing before the drive finally died after an Apple Genius rebooted it a dozen or so times. I have since read about the exact same thing happening to others, including a writer for The Atlantic magazine who had never had an issue with a Mac before. Do a back-up ASAP to make sure you don't lose anything and see about replacing the HDD. It is only about $140 for a new drive. The real issue is if you lose your data, too. So, make sure you do that back-up!
