HELP! MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, and...

Hi all
I noticed that there many of you have the same problem, but I really need some advice here, my MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, well actually occasionally it does recognise the DVDs then it burn but cannot write (on Toast), also in many other apps, like iDVD or DVDSP, it does run well on the first part of the burning but then failed at the end, with all kinda diff error msg. I have tried using many diff brands of disc too, inc verbatim.
So I borrowed my friends external DVD writer (actually a cheapy one with no brand), when I tried to burn using the external then an error msg comes up and says the writer cannot recognise the disc.
I dont wana get the MBP to repair but just wana get a external DVD writer to solve the problem, cos i need to use my computer and dont have a replacement mac, but now I am worry if the problem i now having is a system problem or just hardware, not sure if it is because the DVD writer i borrow is cheapy so it doesnt cope with mac, or just my MBP have system error that cant burn DVDs...
But my MBP can burn CDs so it is not a hardware problem? and if that is a system problem so even I buy a new DVD writer wont solve the problem?
btw, I have tried many solving methods like rewriting permission, reset PVRAM, etc
PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS HELP

I'm having the same problem you are on my 2.4GHZ Core2Duo MBP running 10.5.2. It will sometimes recognize DVDs, sometimes not... it chuggs and clunks and then spits the disc out. If i re-insert it a view times it will show up on the desktop. I get failures from Toast as well as iDVD. If i keep trying i have been able to burn files onto a disc with the finder, but then the burner fails during the verification. If put the disc back in the contents appear to be correct (after a quick look). Burning CD-Rs seems to be working fine, that with the occasional DVD write seems to point away from the HW. I am trying with both Memorex DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD-Rs...
I have tried the command/option-PR reset combo with no luck.
Any ideas?
thanks,
-graham
PS the specific error i got from iDVD was: The error #-2147352539 was reported…

I do not know about Disk Warrior but if you have a compatible OSX on an external HDD you certainly can boot the MBP.  Use startup manager:

  • Two MacBook Pros I own both using backup but only seen as one by backup

I have a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro and a 2013 MacBook Pro. I transfered everything from older machine when I purchased the new machine via backup. Problem is backup 'sees' both machines as one.....so whenever I back up it sees everything as having changed... I would like to be able to back up both.
    Thanks

You need to change network names and perhaps disk names so the TM can recognise that you now have two separate machines.. as you now have two machines of identical configuration.

  • Macbook pro 13 late 2011 turns on but no display and light

Hi i have got macbook pro 13" late 2011 which turns on and i can hear the chime but there is no display and ligh in the screen its completely blank. Anyone had this problem and how did u solve this ?

Have you tried booting into the Recovery HD and running Disk Utility and checking to see if the HD needs repairs?
Restart holding Command + r and at the recovery screen select Disk Utility. Then select Macintosh HD and click  on 'repair disk'. If anything gets altered click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu. More info here about the Recovery HD:

  • New MacBook Pro doesn't read burned content on DVD-R

    Hello,
I just bought a new 13" MacBook Pro (MC700; Matshita DVD-R UJ-8A8) over the weekend, and it can't seem to read burned content on a DVD-R. I tried inserting it a couple of times and it just kept on reading it as blank. I tried the DVD-R on another MacBook (bought early 2010) and it seemed to read the DVD-R well. I went to the Apple Reseller to have the issue fixed. They tried it on their testing units and the DVD-R worked perfectly well. They replaced the unit with a new one, but when they tried the DVD-R, it would not read again. They called someone up and the explanation they gave me was that Apple was able to develop an optical drive which rejects burned content because of its strong anti-piracy views. Is this true? The files in the DVD-R are documents and .avi files that were edited for school and are not pirated. Anybody else have a problem with this?
Please confirm if the "technology" about burned content is true. I am not a techie, so I am asking help. I rely heavily on burned DVD-Rs for its convenience. If it is true, then I must have spent a lot of money on something I couldn't really use.

There is no such animal as an intel G5. Intel based towers are now called Mac Pros. G5 towers run the PowerPC chips.
If you have the MacPro at work, then yes, something else would seem to be amiss.
If you have a G5 at work, then it could still be the universal binary issue.

  • Macbook Pro not able to burn from External DVD drive

    Hi there,
I just bought a Samsung SE-208DB external drive for my 2011 Macbook Pro 8,1 13inch and at first the drive was detected by my Macbook Pro and I was able ot burn a disk but now when I plug in the device, it powers on for a bit then powers off to were I can't eject the disk anymore. Then sometimes it works just fine. I am using an external USB hub with AC plug power so I am confident power to the USb isn't an issue. I just wanted to know are Macbook Pro known to have issues with external drives?
And for those wondering why I don't just use the internal DVD on my Macbook Pro, I replaced it with an SSD for dedicated Windows 7 operating system.
Any ideas on how to approached this problem? Should I just get another brand of external DVD drive. I know I can't get Apples as for some strange reason, Apple makes those only compatible with Macs that didn't come with DVD drives like the Macbook Air.
    Thanks

    Ok I solved it.
The problem is that the drive uses too much power from the usb port.
You can use one of those cables with on one end two usb plugs and on the other end a mini usb. Connect the coresponding usb for power to an iphone charger or any 5v/1amp charger.
Or you can do what I did. I used a usb hub. In one usb port I connected my iphone charger and the drive to another usb port on the hub.
I have just burned my first succesful disc.
    Regards

  • My MacBook Pro will not eject a DVD following viewing.  Help?

My MacBook Pro will not eject a DVD following viewing.   Selecting EJECT
on the controller gives a message of "Supported Disc Not Available".   It is
in the drive and I need to get it out.   How might I proceed?   Thanks for any
    help you can provide.

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
         /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above.
To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • MacBook Pro not recognising EAC burnt audio cds

Hi, I have been searching all day over forums and google trying to solve this problem but had no luck.
Using the EAC burning guide from the Wiki articles I burnt several audio CDs on my windows vista laptop. Everything seemed to go fine in the burning process. All the CDs work fine with all my cd players as well as my slightly old iMac and other Windows computers. However, when I insert the CDs into my MacBook Pro they are recognised as blank CDs. The strange thing is, is that my MacBook Pro will recognise consumer CDs from the shops without any hassle.
I've tried two different disks (maxwell cd-r and a blank non-branded cd-r) so I think we can eliminate any media problems.
It could be a problem with the burning process but then why would it work on all of those other platforms including another Mac?
I have tried re-installing older versions of iTunes, same result. My MacBook Pro is currently up-to-date too. Also to add that I have made audio CDs on this MacBook Pro using both Toast and WaveBurner that play fine.
Does anyone have any ideas, I think it is likely to be a problem with my MacBook Pro settings but would not know where to start?

  • HT2499 my macbook pro won't play any dvds - so many problems with this machine I wish I hadn't switched - constantly frustrated and find it so unfriendly

So much wasted time with this MacBook Pro - I so regret buying it, but I guess I have to stick it out for awhile, seeing as it was twice as much $$ as a new Toshiba (why oh why did I switch) - not friendly at all.  i.e., I didn't have to have a support community with my PC - it just worked!! That being said, does anybody know why this thing keeps telling me "not permitted" - ?  It brings up a dvd player icon but gives me a black screen that says not permitted.

ok, I found a TS file and the program separated all my chapters into separate files.  eg., there are ten little VLC icons - so, at least I know the computer is recognizing the files to a certain extent.  I am used to the dvd opening with its menu on other computers - what program on the MAC would do this so that I can just play the dvd right through and use the menu, if I want to?
    Thanks to everyone who replied.....
As you can tell, I am not super computer literate - I just want to use this new Mac with the facility that I am used to with my old Toshiba, programs that are friendly that I can navigate around and organize/burn/play my dvds/CDs.  That is why my daughter (20 years old) talked me into buying this Mac when I needed a new computer, she said all her friends who make movies and other media have MAC, but her really Geek friends don't use MAC.  Sigh.....my struggle continues - I think I will have to take a Mac course, or try to sell this and go back to PC. Only so much time I am willing to put in.....I end up serving this MAC rather than it serving me.....BF

  • My MacBook Pro is spitting out my DVDs. I tried many discs and they all got spat out. Its an early 2008. The drive is a HL-DT-ST dvdrw GSA-s10n. Do I need a new drive?

Hi.  Need some help here.  My MacBook Pro is spitting out my DVDs.  I insert them and they knock around awhile making whirring noises, then out they come.  Refuses to play them.  I've tried many.  I have an early 2008 model and the drive is a HL-DT-ST dvdrw GSA-s10n.  Do I need to get a new drive?  Thanks for any help or comments.

My old Early 2008 MBP used to do that every now and then in the last years of its life. Got a dry-type optical drive cleaner, the kind that is a CD with 4 rows of very fine and soft bristles glued on the "business side". Memorex was the brand I got, good for 20-30 uses.  Ran it thru every time the drive acted up, never failed to restore functionality.
Of course, the Mac would later go on and blow its logic board. And that was that.

It's new and under warranty. That's the reason to go to the Apple Store.
    Did something happen to it?

The question mark means the computer cannot find a bootable volumes so can;t do anything, That, combined with annoying sounds, strongly suggests a failed hard drive.
You can ask a "genius" at an Apple Rtail Store to test it but I'm pretty sure the drive is kaput. I'm hoping you had your data backed up.
