HELP: MacBook Pro does not boot at all

MacBook Pro 15" 2.5GHz 4GB RAM Serial No. W8******YK0
Snow Leopard (with all updates)
Yesterday when leaving my office I just closed the cover on my MacBook. When I later opened it again the front white lite was steadyly on (dim) and the computer did not react to anything.
I tried the following:
Long-pressed the power button to turn it off, after 10 sec. turned it on  again. Disk makes a faint noise but no more life signs. Screen stays black.
Tried to boot from original system disk (the grey disk I). Disk spins at high rev as expected when trying to boot but then goes to a slow speed and stays like that forever. Have to shut down by hiolding down power key until power off.
Removed power cable and battery, held power switch down for 10 sec. to reset SMC. No effect.
Removed both RAM banks. Tried to boot without RAM. No effect.
Tried swapping RAM banks. No effect.
Booted with single RAM bank. No effect.
Are there any steps I could take to get it back to life? I need the computer urgently for work (have to give two presentations the coming week which I wanted to work on this weekend). I have had time machine connected and I have a full backup of the hard disk from about a month ago.
Any help sincerely appreciated!

Hi, Now, I am not sure if i can help you, but at least i am "glad" too see that i am not the only one with this problem. The same problem i have/had in December, so i took my Mac Book Pro after trying the same as you did to the Service, only to hear from them that i must buy a new LogicBoard, ok, i did this & it was then replaced, but after picking it up from Service 1 Month later, it was working, but only for 2 Hours, so i went back to the service again complaning about this problem, & all that i heard again from them was..." Your LogicBoard is not working, you must buy a New LogicBoard"... This i cannot not understand or accept after spending so much money for repairs, (2 Times in such a short period) After speaking with Apple, i was only told that this is not normal, & that i must go again to the Service where i was before & speak with them about it.

  • Macbook pro does not boot after upgrading ram

    I have a macbook pro late 2011 which runs with mavericks operating system . I have tried to upgrade my macbook to 8Gb. Macbook does not boot when the two ram slots are filled with 4GB ram but runs well when the slots are filled with 2GB ram. When i try them individually with one slot of 2GB ram and another slot with 4GB they run perfectly which shows status ok in the RAM info. What could be the problem . 

    Around here, most of us recommend only Crucial and OWC for RAM because it's guaranteed to work with Macs and it's what most of us have. If I were you, I would return the RAM and look at purchasing RAM from either Crucial or OWC. If you can't get their RAM to work then you'll know that there's some trouble with your actual slots.

  • I made changes in the single user mode - now my MacBook Pro does not boot anymore.

    Hello apple support community,
    I made changes in the single user mode and my MacBook Pro does now not boot anymore. It displays a grey bar and the "work in progress" wheel. My intention was to change my admin password following these steps:

  • My MacBook Pro does not boot beyond the login screen. I have a full hard drive. Help!

  • MacBook Pro does not boot when 'cold', Windows 7 on the other hand boots without any problem

    Hey everyone,
    I have a strange problem with my MacBook Pro mid 2009 13" running OSX Mavericks. For more than a year I have trouble booting my laptop. A 'cold' start (a fresh boot) usually ends with the prohibition sign on a grey back ground (starting in verbose mode results in the error message that the main drive could not be found). So far so strange.
    I have Windnows 7 installed as a bootcamp partition. If I start the laptop with Windows booting is no problem and Windows runs smoothly (what a terrible world we live in). If I let the laptop run for let say 10 minutes and restart the laptop Mac OS starts without any problems. (It doesn't work if I immediately restart after windows booted; also reinstalling Mac OS as a clean install from an external medium did not change the problem; disk utility always finds something to repair but neither discpermission repair nor disk repair got rid of the problem).
    As an additional comment a WD 500GB Scorbio Blue replaced the original hard drive about a years ago. I had no problems with the hard drive initally and I can't really believe that there is a problem with the hardware, I mean, why does Windows start and Mac OS doesn't?

    This isn't a direct answer to your issue but have you considered installing Wine so you can run the occasional windows app directly in OSX? It's a much more elegant solution IMHO. This avoids restarting all the time with Bootcamp and avoids crashing all the time (and the security risks) with Windows running.

  • Macbook Pro will not boot, at all!

    Hi all, Thanks in advance for this...
    Specs: Macbook pro 2010 model with Snow Leopard (updated recently). 250gb Seagate HDD
    I shall start with yesterday, when i let my battery drain to nothing so that it could be recharged fully and effectively.
    Afterwards i booted up the Macbook fine with no problems and it sat there charging to 100%.
    I shut it down the normal way and returned to it about an hour later when the following occurred:
    Upon starting i received the apple logo and the spinning wheel, accompanied by the loading bar which gives up halfway and turns the computer off.
    I have tried the following to rectify the problem:
    1: tried running the install DVD to boot up into Disk Utility to repair any file corruptions possible, but the spinning wheel and logo just sits there forever not doing anything.
    2: Tested the Hardware by using the common check (forgotten how i did it) checking the RAM state and other logic board functions but it came back clean.
    3: I ran single user mode - /dev/rdsk0s2 to try and find out the status of files but it Exited under Signal 8 Saying - The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.
    4: Based on other forum subjects relating to the signal 8 problem (HDD failure), i swapped HDD and placed one in that i know works hoping to install OSX onto that drive. But again, it holds at the spinning wheel and doesn't go any further.
    5: any other commands i tried running under single user mode just brings back: Permission Denied -/dev
    6: Tried using my Windows machine as a donor DVD R drive to install, but the Macbook won't give me anything else except 'Macintosh HD' drive when i hold down the 'Alt/option' key, aiming to use the network to my advantage and rule out Optical drive failure on the Mac.
    I am running out of options here, i would like to try and install OSX via Memory stick but i have only a windows Xp desktop machine here to help me and it cannot read all the files on the install disc to copy over. Also i do not have the money available to download expensive software to help me.
    Stupidly i haven't been able to back up my files and hopefully this Friday coming i will be able to copy all files over to my Mums Macbook as i cannot access the GUILD protected drive on Windows.
    Now the way i assume things have happened is by the following: Letting the battery run flat has corrupted a few files which in turn won't let the Mac boot up anymore, But i cannot rule out the Optical drive failing unless i work out how to install OSX off of a Memory stick (bearing in mind i don't have another Macbook to hand until next friday). If the Optical drive is fine then i can only assume that the logic board is dead?
    I need to fix this problem ASAP and i have no other ideas on what to do, hopefully you guys/girls can give me some extra field to play on.
    I would take it to Apple but i'd rather get some advice before i take that route, Ideally also because i have lack of funds to help me here!

    Applejack is just a command-line "front-end" for a number of different command-line tools you can use in single-user mode, and I'm not sure whether it's Lion-compatible.  You can always try booting into single-user mode and executing:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    That's unlikely to solve your problems, though.  Since you can't boot from two different hard drives and your optical drive, that indicates there's a more serious hardware issue, or multiple hardware issues.

    I need some support.
    I have upgraded my MacBook Pro 2.2 to Leopard. Defined a Vista 32 Home Premium (original) Bootcamp partition. Everything has worked fine till yesterday. Now there is no way to boot the sistem anymore. If you select Mac boot it stays with the grey screen forever. If I try Windows boot it tries to go back to Mac and does not start.
    No chance to start in safe mode!
    I am really disappointed as I need to recover some files and I am not able to find any way.
    Can someone support me?
    On the other MacBook Pro no issue at all with Bootcamp and same configuration.

    If you have Apple Stores and Apple Geniuses in Germany, I would go see one.
    Otherwise, at least you can boot from the Leopard DVD. You said you needed to recover some files. I hope the following helps you do so; I have not tried this myself. You will need either a flash drive or an external hard drive, depending on the size of the files. You will also need to be reasonably proficient with Terminal so here are some tips. You open the Terminal from the Utilities menu after booting from the Leopard DVD, just like you did to open Disk Utility. (You might need Disk Utility to mount your flash drive or your external hard drive; I'm not sure.)
    Terminal tips:
    0. You will see some '\ ' in the following, because a space in a file name has to be escaped. Tab completion (tip 2) will automatically put in the backslashes as needed.
    1. The ls command lists files. So, for example,
    ls /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/
    will list the contents at the root ('/') of your hard drive.
    2. *Use tab completion* to save yourself LOTS of typing. For example, to enter the previous example, you could type "ls /Vol[TAB]Mac[TAB]" where [TAB] means the Tab key. Tab completion only works if the file exists. If the tab completion doesn't seem to do anything, it may be because you haven't yet typed enough. Hitting tab again will show all possible completions to what you have already typed.
    3. cd changes directories (or folders). So typing
    cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users/marmorix/Documents
    will get you to the Documents folder of your home folder (assuming that your short user name is "marmorix"), thus perhaps saving you some typing if that is where the documents you wish to save are.
    4. . is the current directory. .. is the directory one up. So if you typed in the cd command of the previous step, then .. is the same as /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users/marmorix/
    5. cp copies files or directories. The 'p' flag preserves permissions, the 'i' (interactive) flag prevents you from accidentally overwriting files, and the 'r' flag copies recursively. So for example,
    <pre>cp -pir . /Volumes/External\ Hard\ Drive/SaveMyDocuments</pre>
    will copy everything, including subfolders, in the current directory to a folder named SaveMyDocuments on the external hard drive, if the name of the volume on the external hard drive was "External Hard Drive". (If necessary, you can learn the name of the volume on the external hard drive using tab completion.)
    6. Unlike when you boot from the hard drive, the root directory when you use Terminal from the Leopard DVD refers to the Mac OS on the DVD, and so '/', etc. are on the DVD. This is why most of the previous tips referred explicitly to '/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD', which is your actual hard drive.
    7. man is how you learn (more than you wanted to!) about commands. For example, man man will tell you about the man command; man cp will explain more about the copy command; and so on.
    I hope these tips help you at least recover your data. I fear that the failure of repair permissions means that there is something seriously wrong. So let us know if this works, because if this does or does not work, then we will have at least one more piece of data towards figuring out what is wrong and how/if we can fix it.

  • Macbook Pro does not boot from install CD, boots from non-apple live CDs

    This story begins with my macbook becoming entirely unresponsive while just sitting around with the desktop in focus. My current problems begin with the third of such freezing events. It felt like the hard drive had stopped responding since everything looked fine and I could move my mouse, but as soon as I attempted to access anything that depended upon the file system (ie everything not already in memory) that thing I attempted to access would freeze up as well. The only thing I can do when these happen is to force a shutdown.
    The three times I have had these problems I would be greeted with the flashing folder-and-question-mark. So, for the third time now I threw in a live CD I have and ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtility and fsck and everything I could possibly need to recover the system. Each of these programs ran through their routines and reported that it had either successfully made repairs or the disk needed no repairs and was A-OK!. S.M.A.R.T. reports that the drive is perfectly fine as well.
    Now, though, whenever I try to start up my computer I'm greeted with the normal grey apple startup image, the folder with the question mark, and also the prohibited sign (grey circle with a slash through it). This is the first time that running the disk repair programs has failed. Expecting a crashed hard drive or something equally fun I threw in the live CD again and attempted to recover my data. The thing is, I was able to navigate the file system perfectly with terminal and didn't even need any data recovery tools. So, at least my data has been safely backed up.
    I've tried booting into single user mode, but it seems that DiskWarrior helped my computer in an assisted suicide of sorts as boot.efi is sitting in a DiskWarrior recovered folder and the mach kernel has been entirely misplaced. Immediately I restart, throw in the first Macbook Pro installation CD, and hold down C in an attempt to reinstall the system.
    Here is my current problem: Whenever I attempt to boot from any of the installation CDs that came with my laptop, the laptop will begin to boot from the CD and show a grey screen as it begins reading from the disk, but before the spinning gear or grey apple appears the laptop simply restarts and attempts to boot from the disk again.
    This boot-restart process loops infinitely with every Apple-provided installation CD I have tried. The laptop never progresses past a grey screen, instead restarting and happily chiming. However, I have been able to boot from a non-Apple Live CD that I own every time I have tried; moreover, the hard drive is perfectly accessible and shows no errors from any program I run. When I hold option upon startup it shows the drive and lets me boot into it (but then the problems I have described pop up). I have also tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM with no success.
    Does anyone have any suggestions for how to boot into the live CD? Or would I be better off making sure I have backed up all of my data and then wiping the drive for a fresh install?

    I am having the exact same issue. I can only log into the system in safe mode. Holding down the Shift key when turning the machine on, until the log window appears.

  • Macbook Pro does not boot - how can I recover files of HD???

    My Macbook Pro 2.16 ghz is 1 year and 42 days old. It is used for a few hours a day (on average two). Since lunchtime it has refused to boot up. I have been through the manual, reseated ram, turned my fingers into elastic rope trying various key combinations, and generally fumed and raged. But now I need to get the data from the HD mainly word docs and pdf files over to a Windows machine. What options are available that work? Is there any recovery software that I can load on the PC that will read the mac disk for instance?

    Welcome to the Forums!
    Ummmm....did you try inserting your Install DVD 1 and booting with the c key held down? That will boot from the optical disc, instead of the hard disk. You'll see the welcome screen, select your language, then from the Utilities menu select Disk Utility. Does your HDD show up in the list? If yes, click it then click Repair Disk.
    If the HDD does not show up (i.e. does not mount), post back.
    As for your files, there are Mac programs to recover them (Data Rescue II, for example). You'd need to buy the software, install it on a recovery DVD (using a friend's Mac?), and have an external drive (in a Mac OS format, I susect) to recover the data to. I'm not aware of any software on the PC side that will allow you to do file recovery on the Mac.
    Sorry for your troubles!
    For the future (even if the above steps solve your problem), you should consider an external FireWire HDD and a regular backup strategy (I use SuperDuper, very easy, and having a recent backup = peace of mind!).

  • MacBook Pro does not boot past apple screen after replacing hard drive

    After replacing hard drive on MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011 model, the screen only boots to the apple logo.  Do I need to re-install the OS?

    The problem is that the OS is not in any where else of the MacBook Pro than in the HD / SSD. If you replace the Hard Drive, then you will need to Re-install OSX into that hard drive, it's pretty easy.
    1) Power up your Macbook Pro, as fast as you can press and hold the Option key (ALT). You'll see that it opens the bootable-devices you have, you'll see a Recovery partition, click it.
    (If the Hard Drive contains data do the following)
    2) In the menu select Disk Utility.
    3) In Disk Utility go ahead and select the Hard Drive that is inside the MBP.
    4) Erase the content.
    (If the Hard Drive contains no data continue with the following jumping the last 3 steps).
    5) Select Re-install OSX.
    6) Select the Hard Drive in which you want to install it.
    Follow the steps of everything else (it should take approximately 1 hour to do the whole thing).

  • My 13" MacBook Pro will not boot up - all I get is blank screen

    The MacBook Pro is only 10 months old and is up to date on all OSX updates. I have been using it all day and suddenly this evening it just went to a blank screen and will not boot up. No fan, nothing. Nada.
    I have tried the following:
    checked magsafe and it is clean of any dirt
    checked battery (pressed button on side of Macbook and got 6 green lights coming up)
    There are no USB peripherals connected
    tried pressing CMD+CNTRL+Start button and nothing happended
    tried holding down start button for 30 seconds
    The mac has not been dropped or had water on it.
    Any other ideas?

    Which OS do you have...if it is Snow leopard then press shift while starting up, i.e., immediately after pressing power button
    if the os is Lion or Mountain Lion press command+r to goto the restore thing and then disk utility to rectify your problem

  • Macbook Pro does not boot after replacing HD

    I have a Macbook Pro that I bought in early 2007. It came with 10.4, and I have since upgraded to 10.5, and then 10.6.
    I decided to upgrade the original internal HD to a 500GB HD. I used Time Machine to back up the orignal HD.
    After performing the surgery, I turned on the MBP with my Snow Leopard install DVD. After a while reading the DVD, the MBP spits out the DVD and displays the folder with the question mark.
    I then create a recovery disk on an 8GB Flash Drive, using the Snow Leopard install disk as a source. I plug in the drive, start the MBP and hold down the 'option' key. I get a grey screen with a mouse cursor, but no drive icons.
    I'm puzzled. The install DVD seems to look fine on other computers, as does the flash drive. I'm planning on getting a HD enclosure and cloning my old drive to the new drive, but does anyone have any suggestions as to what's gone wrong?

    Are you holding down the small case letter c the whole time. Keep holding it till the install screen comes up.
    Did that, still tried to boot (sounded like the drive was reading), and still got the folder with the question mark, and the DVD was ejected.
    Also, it has to be a retail disk of Snow Leopard. A machine specific disk that came with another Mac will not work. You need the universal copy.
    Right, my MBP came with 10.4 originally, so this was a retail disk.

  • 2009 macbook pro does not boot, restarts half way through boot. Has hard drive crashed?

    My macbook pro 2009 froze and shut off. I restarted it and only boots half way then it restarts on its own. I have tried entering cmd R to verify disk and permissions. My disk in unmounted and the SMART status says not supported. Error was found but while trying to repair it said: Disk utility stopped repairing. Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible , reformat disk, and restoer your backed up files. I have tried to restore from time machine and it wont let me do that either. Has my hard drive crashed?
    Also, About 2 months ago i installed new RAM so I now have 8GB instead of 2GB and everything was working well up to that point.

    I am having the exact same issue. I can only log into the system in safe mode. Holding down the Shift key when turning the machine on, until the log window appears.

  • Macbook pro does not boot after enabling Filevault

    macbook pro with OS 10.9.2 : after enabling encryption ran in to a problem and did not startup.
    did the followings:
    - loaded to recovery mode:  command-R
    - disk utility- verify disk> repair disk
    - tried to reinstall OS : did not work
    - re-partitioned the hard drive
    - tried to install it from bootable Mac os installation : it worked but after running the software update it did not start up again....
    - sent the mac to repair store to replace the hard drive with SSD  hard : they setup the hard with mac os 10.9.5
    - installed all the software update
    - enabled the file-vault " this time it finished the encryption but when started up and tried to login with user account it got frozen and did not work and so on ...
    - again tried to go to recovery mod and repair the hard and reinstall OS but it did not install the OS
    - had to again repartition the hard ...
    PS:  the macbook loads fine with the OS on External hard disk .
    this is really frustrating, can somebody tell me what's wrong with this mac why this issue happens after enabling encryption and why the issue is not gone even after reformatting the partition...

    I finally fixed the issue myself
    The macbook had a RAM issue:  Replaced the RAM and it is fine now.

  • MacBook Pro does not boot

    I have a 2.2Ghz Core Duo 160HDD 2Gig Ram w Leopard 10.5.1
    i was surfing the net yesterday and my the system crashed - screen went black and it turned itself off immediatly. So this happened twice before in the last 2 month, but i didnt read much into it since i am used to windows, and it always started up again no problem...
    Now when i try to start the computer, the small led in front lights up, i can hear something humming when i get close (my guess hdd), but after about 5-10seconds there is a click rougly under the esc button and everything goes quiet...
    now when i close the lid in that time the light stays on and the click does not come... i left it that way for a lil bit to see if maybe it figures itself out but all it did was get hot - very hot, so i turned it off again - thats when i figured that most likely the fan doesnt start, at least it does not sound that way )although i never paid attention to that before)
    can anyone confirm that, something else or give suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    To monitor the fans along with other things, you can download the widget "iStatPro" from the Apple site. But given the problems you are experiencing, you might also want to run the Apple Hardware test (on Install Disc #1 of the discs that came with your computer) and check that none of the thermal sensors have failed. The left I/O board is near the esc key, and it sounds like there is a relay activating which is shutting down your MBP. Has your MBP been running hot other than when you closed the lid?
    From your post, I am not sure if you can boot up at all. See if you can boot from your install disc #1 holding down "d" to go to the AHT and run that.
