  • Please help -- Macbook Pro 13 is suddenly sloooowww ....

    Can someone please help ??
I have a Macbook Pro (13 in.) Mid-2010 which is running Mountain Lion OS X Version 10.8.2 (12C60).    I have had this computer for over 2 years and have NEVER had a problem with it and have loved it until 2 - 3 weeks ago, it suddenly started giving me problems.  I have never cracked open the inside of any computer, but am seriously considering attempting to replace my hard drive (I've read so many different potential issues that may be the reason for my macbook problems, the hard drive disk being one -- not really sure why i'm leaning towards that one, but I'm desperate).
    Here's What's Going On:
    1. I frequently am getting the spinning beachball that will spin for, sometimes, seconds and sometimes SEVERAL minutes. The spinny beachball has been a rare occurrence in the past, but when I used to get it, I could just ForceQuit the application and restart it - problem solved..... NOW, I am not able to use ForceQuit. When I attempt to access the ForceQuit menu, it will not appear until the freeze/beachball problem has stopped and so at that point, there is no need to quit the app.
    2. Starting my computer has become REDICULOUSLY SLOW. The slow startup problem began occurring at the same time as the beachballs. I'm getting to the white screen with the apple, and that's where it stays for anywhere from 15 - 45 minutes. There have been times that I tried to start it up but it took such a long time so I powered it down while it was still on the white/apple screen and then powered it back up -- I didn't know if this may be part of the reason for the REALLY long startup times (45 minutes).    But either way, best case scenario, it takes at least 15 - 20 minutes before my desktop appears.
    3. Also, this may or may not be related, but there have been 2 occasions during this time where my laptop sound basically became disfunctional. I was not able to get any sound and lost the option to adjust the sound (when i tried, the little image of the speaker with the cross sign going through it would appear). Similarly, on a different occasion, the same thing happened with the keyboard backlighting - it is not working and it does not allow me to adjust the controls, same as the sound issue.
Like I said, I don't know a whole lot of computers, but this is what I've tried so far.  - I cleared up some space on the hard drive (currently 101 out of 250 GB are free).   - I did the Disk Utility >> First Aid >> Repair Disk Permissions.   - I've copied all my files to an external drive, AND was going to try to Restore my computer to factory settings with the OS X (Snow Leopard) Installation Disc that came with my computer, BUT when I tried it gave me the following message:  "You Can't Use This Version Of The Application 'Install Mac OS X' with this version of OS X. You have Install Mac OS X 23.1.1".   .... so, I guess I can't override Mountain Lion with Snow Leopard (?).....    And that's pretty much it.  Now I'm considering replacing the hard drive while crossing my fingers.
OH YEAH, I forgot to mention.... and I'm not 100% on this ... but my problems started occurring in early October.... wasn't there a Mountain Lion update around that time???   It seems like I did an update around that time, but i could be wrong AND it may not be the problem .....    So....
IS THIS HAPPENING TO ANYONE ELSE ??
ANYONE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE SYMPTOMS I PROVIDED AND GIVE A DIAGNOSTIC OPINION OR OFFER SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT I SHOULD DO NEXT ??
ANY HELP AND ALL SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED  !!

That is precisely what my mid-2010 MacBoook Pro 13 was doing before the drive finally died after an Apple Genius rebooted it a dozen or so times. I have since read about the exact same thing happening to others, including a writer for The Atlantic magazine who had never had an issue with a Mac before. Do a back-up ASAP to make sure you don't lose anything and see about replacing the HDD. It is only about $140 for a new drive. The real issue is if you lose your data, too. So, make sure you do that back-up!

I am having the exact same problem with my 13" early 2011 Macbook Pro. I have 10.6.8. I used the disk that came with the laptop to restore the OS to 10.6.7 but the problem existed there too. I have now updated it back to 10.6.8. The problem still exists. This doesn't seem to be limited to an OS version and seems like an issue with device driver or with hardware. I will try to take it to the Apple store and see if this gets resolved.
You too have a black screen in Windows 7. ?

  • HELP: MacBook Pro does not boot at all

    MacBook Pro 15" 2.5GHz 4GB RAM Serial No. W8******YK0
    Snow Leopard (with all updates)
Yesterday when leaving my office I just closed the cover on my MacBook. When I later opened it again the front white lite was steadyly on (dim) and the computer did not react to anything.
    I tried the following:
Long-pressed the power button to turn it off, after 10 sec. turned it on  again. Disk makes a faint noise but no more life signs. Screen stays black.
Tried to boot from original system disk (the grey disk I). Disk spins at high rev as expected when trying to boot but then goes to a slow speed and stays like that forever. Have to shut down by hiolding down power key until power off.
Removed power cable and battery, held power switch down for 10 sec. to reset SMC. No effect.
Removed both RAM banks. Tried to boot without RAM. No effect.
Tried swapping RAM banks. No effect.
Booted with single RAM bank. No effect.
Are there any steps I could take to get it back to life? I need the computer urgently for work (have to give two presentations the coming week which I wanted to work on this weekend). I have had time machine connected and I have a full backup of the hard disk from about a month ago.
    Any help sincerely appreciated!

Hi, Now, I am not sure if i can help you, but at least i am "glad" too see that i am not the only one with this problem. The same problem i have/had in December, so i took my Mac Book Pro after trying the same as you did to the Service, only to hear from them that i must buy a new LogicBoard, ok, i did this & it was then replaced, but after picking it up from Service 1 Month later, it was working, but only for 2 Hours, so i went back to the service again complaning about this problem, & all that i heard again from them was..." Your LogicBoard is not working, you must buy a New LogicBoard"... This i cannot not understand or accept after spending so much money for repairs, (2 Times in such a short period) After speaking with Apple, i was only told that this is not normal, & that i must go again to the Service where i was before & speak with them about it.

  • Help - MacBook Pro won't turn on

Help - my macbook pro will not turn on even though it is plugged in. Holding down the power button is ineffective. The power cord has the green "charged" light, but when I plugged it in, it wasn't charged and never did charge (the light never was orange). The computer worked perfectly this morning.

Will it not turn on at all or do you just get a gray screen?
If a gray screen, look at this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5282
If it does not turn on at all, try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If the reset fails to bring life to the MBP, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • HELP MacBook Pro Error 1004

My laptop is a 2009/2010 MacBook Pro. I recently updated to the latest iOS Mountain Lion. I had some pending purchases (already paid for, ready to download) in my app store but I first did the update. Now, whenever I try to download my purchased apps I get an Error 1004. I have tried to give it time, I have tried restarting my computer, I have tried signing out and coming back. Nothing so far has worked. I am not that computer savvy so some of the suggestions I have found online honestly confuse the **** out of me. Also, I think the age of my Mac is a player. I would really appreciate some help on this.

  • [HELP] Macbook Pro won't boot Samsung Evo SSD internally

I recently bought a 512 Gb Samsung Evo SSD for my 2011 Macbook Pro. After cloning the harddrive using superduper! I installed the harddrive internally and booted it up. I first received an error saying "Unapproved Caller SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple Software". Confused, I hit OK and it proceeded to showing the Apple bootup screen with the spiral underneath. I decided to restart the machine and this time I did not receive the error, however it just got stuck at the apple boot up screen with the spiral spinning for days. I brought it to Tigerdirect and they tried everything they could (apparently) and had no luck with cloning, fresh install, reinstalling OS, and so on. They told me the Boot Rom only (for some reason) recognizes the original seagate HDD and my boot rom is messed up. Freaking out, I tried placing the SSD in the computer and connect the original HDD via USB 3.0. I booted the HDD by holding down option during bootup then proceeded to system preferences and tried to changed the start up disk to the SSD. However, I received an error saying Bless tool was unable to set boot disk. I am now at a loss, and worried my pricey SSD will become dead weight. Please help
    Thanks for anyones help

Were you ever able to fix the problem, I have the same issue.

  • I need RAM and Internal Hard Drive help Macbook Pro 17inch

It's about time for me to max out the ram and buy another internal hard drive for my 17 inch Macbook Pro. I use photoshop and final cut pro X on a regular basis and my Macbook is starting to slow down and is low on memory. These were the two recommendations that I got from a live chat agent on OWC. Just wondering were these recommendations good...if so I'll go ahead and purchase them now. Any help is appreciated.
    Specs for my Macbook Pro
    2.66hz
    4GB Ram
    250GB HD
    Model Identifier is MacBook Pro5,2
    Mac OSX Maverick
    Recommendations from Agent:
    HD

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Toshiba/MQ01ABD100H/
    Ram

Good choices, though a true SSD would be faster overall, though more expensive. That same drive is a lot cheaper on Amazon though.

  • Help - Macbook Pro won't start after running update

I just checked the FAQs here and ran several searches and have not found an answer to my problem. I sure hope someone here can help.
Today I installed the big batch of updates Apple released recently (I think it was on July 31) on my 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro. When I turned it on, I was told there was one last update that required me to turn off the machine and then hold down the power button.
I did, and the machine started to come on, but I guess I held the button down a little too long. Now the machine won't turn on. Everytime I press the button, I hear the same sound I always get when I turn on my machine, except that now the sound just goes on and on and on, and the MBP never actually boots up.
I wish I could remember the exact name of the update. I think it might be the EFI Firmware Update 1.2 that's described at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproefifirmwareupdate12.html. That scares me because the words "Important: Do not interrupt the update" suggest things can go badly if the update doesn't go right the first time.
Any advice as to what I should do?

That sounds like an interrupted firmware update. And Macs with interrupted firmware updates are very unhappy Macs!
You will need to restore your firmware to it's original state, then reapply the update. For this, you'll need to create a Firmware Restoration CD.
    See this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303469
Here's one of the more important sections of the page: +"If your computer is already in this state, you'll need to download the software and create the CD on another Macintosh computer, or you can take your computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to restore your firmware. This CD can be created on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macintosh computers."+
You might be better off just taking it in to an Apple Store.
Ps. When you get a chance, you might want to update OS information in your forum settings - I'm pretty sure you're not running 10.3.8 Panther on your MBP!

  • Help: Macbook Pro Retina won't boot past Grey screen w/ Logo

    All,
My computer died last night with each application not responding. I couldn't shut down normally so I held the power button to turn it off.
Next morning, I tried to boot the MacBook Pro and the boot process stalled at the grey screen with the Apple Logo and spinning wheel. I let it go for an hour and there was no change on the screen. Based on Apple's help desk I ran Hardware diagnostics (extended with looping disabled) and got the following error
    4HDD/11/40000000: SATA (0,0)
    The screen shot is below
I ran this again with standard testing (no looping) and standard with looping and all gave the same results.
Any ideas? The compute will not boot.
    Thank you
    Phillip

That's what I thought but was able to do CMD-R and verify/repair permissions the disk. My hard drive is actually a flash drive so I'm guessing the controller or motherboard.
I do have it backed up with the last 24 hours ago.
    Thanks
    Phillip

  • Help - macbook pro will not switch on

I have had my macbook pro for about 2 years, it is the older version but is running leopard. When I switch it on it goes to a grey screen with the apple logo and the timer, after staying like this for a while it then switches itself off.
A friend suggested I cold started it (holding down the power button) and also holding down shift to whilst restarting it, neither of these worked.
I have not dropped it, I believe it is charged to full battery and I save nearly all my files on an external hard drive so it shouldn't be full.
Please can anyone suggest anything I can do to help or suggest what the problem may be. My friend said that I possibly have a problem with my hard drive?
    Thank you,
    Lucinda.

Possible. Insert Install DVD 1 (that came with your MBP) and try booting with the c key pressed. If/when you see the menu bar (after language selection) select Utilities menu > Disk Utility, select your HDD in the list, and click Verify Disk. If errors are found, click Repair Disk.

  • Help, Macbook Pro shuts down while login

    Hi guys,
My 2012 Macbook pro with Yosemite was frozen when copying files and couldn't even shut down. So I rebooted it by long pressing power button.
Then it just shuts down automatically a few seconds after I input password and press enter.
No time machine backups, no enough disk space to reinstall a new copy of system, and there are lots files that I can't afford to lose.
    Any help will be appreciated!

    Try SMC and PRAM resets:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Then see if a Safe boot will work:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Then try to boot into the recovery partition and see if you can get into Disk Utility>First Aid to repair the SSD.
    http://pondini.org/OSX/RecoveryHD.html
    Ciao.

  • Help: macbook pro 13 inch late 2013 - can't open files

    Hi all
Am having problems opening any file types on my macbook pro. It's only a few months old and has started to close the 'browse' button or any other type of button when I am required to open other files. I can't find any info on this.
I have tried running the disk utility and repairing the disk to no avail.
Don't have a clue what could have happened but it's kind of annoying cos every time I try to open up something, I have to do it about 15 times before the window opens for long enough for me to choose the file.
Hope that makes sense and hopefully someone can help me out.
Been a mac user for over 10 years now and am getting to the point where I'm considering going back to windows due to the cost and the problems I've been encountering. :-(
    Cheers

That's an odd problem. If it were me I think I'd do a full backup to an external drive and reinstall the OS from the Recovery partition. If an "in-place" install (meaning overwriting the existing system files) doesn't work, the next step would be to wipe the disk and install a fresh copy.

  • What are some helpful macbook pro forums.  im brand new too mac

i got a juiced up 15inch macbook pro.  im having problems opening a new folder inside my external hard drive.  im trying to manage the folders but the computer wont let me. i need help

This is from the Finders Help File:
    To change permissions:
Select the disk, folder, or file and choose File > Get Info. In the Get Info window, if the Sharing & Permissions pane is not visible, click the disclosure triangle to show it.
If required, click the lock icon, and enter a name and password. If you are the owner of an item you will need to authenticate by entering an administrator name and password to change the owner or the “Apply to enclosed” option. If you are not the owner of the item a standard user can only make changes to existing permissions. An administrator name and password is required to add or delete users and groups, change owners, or apply permissions to enclosed items.
Select a user or group from the Name column.
To choose a permission for yourself or another user, select from the pop-up menus in the Privilege column:
Read & Write: Allows a user to open the item to see its contents and change it.
Read Only: Allows a user to open the item to see its contents, but not change the contents.
Write Only: Makes a folder into a drop box. Users can copy items to the drop box, but cannot open the drop box to see its contents. Only the owner of the drop box can open it to take out items.
No Access: Blocks all access to an item with “everyone else” selected in the Name column. Users that are specified can’t open the item, change its contents, or copy its contents.
Custom: If the permissions for an item is set to Custom, the permissions have been configured in a way that is more complex than is provided in the basic user settings.
To apply the same permissions to every item contained in the selected folder or disk, open the action button/popup and choose “Apply to enclosed items.”
To choose a different owner for the item, select the new owner in the Name column, and then open the Action menu (looks like a gear) and choose “Make ‘Name’ the owner.”
To add a user or group, click the Add button, below the list of accounts, and then select the user or group.
To remove a user or group, select the user or group, and then click the Remove button.
