  • 17 inch i7 Macbook Pro Snow leopard install problems

Got my new 17 inch i7 MBP, powered it up everythings fine. So I go to re partition the drive and do a clean system install. Middle of the install it fails. Log file shows it cant read files from the DVD.
So I grab a snow leopard install version 10.6 to install from. It will not boot the mbp i7. It hangs on the apple screen with no activity circle underneath the apple logo. Same for 10.6.2 SL install disc I have.
I then try to install SL to a external drive and update it to 10.6.3. It boots all my non i7 macs here but when I try to boot the i7 mbp it hangs again on the apple screen.
I really want to use the i7 machine and Im dreading waiting on apple to send me mbp 17 replacement disks. I have no problems buying a 10,6,3 version of the SL installer but after my experiences with 10.6 and 10.6.2 and the external disk to upgrade to 10.6.3 I have a feeling the i5/i7 machines need specific installer discs.
Is any one aware of this or run in to it yet ? Thanks.

The only OS installer that will work with your MBP is the one that came with the Mac originally so you will need to wait for a new set.

  • HELP - Reinstalling iLife from Leopard Install Discs

    I have a question...
I need to reinstall ONLY iMovie and iDVD from the Leopard Install discs. (My computer came with Leopard and iLife 08)
If I click on the option "install bundled software only", can I choose which application to install?
If I can't choose, will my iTunes and iPhoto libraries be deleted because I reinstalled iLie '08?
    Thanks!!!

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that iLife was not on the Leopard install DVD.
It comes on the system HD but that's it.
If you want to be sure, download Pacifist (yahoo for it - it's free and made by charlessoft) and see if you can find it on the DVD. If it's there, simply extract it.
I would backup your libraries in any case before doing anything.

  • Black MacBook stuck mid-Lion install

I have a Black MacBook (4,1), the early 2008 model.
It's current state is that I am mid-install of a app store provided version of Lion - it was at the restart point, and I cannot get past the spinning gear.  I let it go for hours.
It also will not work in Target Mode.  Disk utility sees nothing.  System Profiler on the host mac sees an "Unknown Volume" on the firewire bus.
I tried to boot from a number of disks: Snow Leopard, Tiger, and the original 10.5 disks that shipped with the laptop.  No dice.
I did do a key command that showed me what the startup disk is presently called - it identifies itself as the Lion Installer.  So my original Hard Drive is not even advertising itself right now.
So I am stuck.  I've run the Apple Hardware test - the extended one.  No problems found.
I've pulled the battery, held down the power button for 5 secs.  nothing.
I've tried to launch in Safe Mode.  Won't do it - it stays on the spinning gear.
I am able to launch in Single user mode, so my hope is that there are some commands that could reset my mac from whatever plagues it to at least boot it so I can extricate the data and deal with the laptop's viability secondarily.
I deeply appreciate any and all advice. Thanks very much.

  • MacBook Air snow leopard install trouble

Hey all, I just ran a fresh install of snow leopard off a copy I bought today at apple. I ran it through remote setup off my macbook pro and once the install was finished I got stuck with a gray screen and pinwheel spinning. Let it sit for about a half hour and nothing happened. I tried to reboot the machine and nothing was installed. Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

  • Refurbished macbook pro without leopard install disk - advice

I've been offered a refurbished mac book pro theough an authorised servicce provider. I have not considered refurbished before but this is a previous gen model with a matte screen (i find glossy unusable and cannot afford to buy a new 17 inch model). It all sounds ok but when I asked whether it had an original install disk they said it didn't (something to do with copyright) I spoke to applecare ( the mac has this until march 2010) and they said they would be able to send out a new "general' install disk as it is under applecare. i always thought that you needed a specific intsall disk that related to your specific model (although when I upgraded to leopard i just went to the shop and brought aq copy without it mattering which model i used). I know applecare advisers arent always the most reliable - I'm confused. Any help greatfully received.

I'm generally a bit concerned about this company. If they are installing leopard on it why can't they supply me with a copy of it?
You have a legitimate concern... if they are installing Leopard and not giving you a copy of the disks, it seems to me that they are violating the license agreement. Since you're undoubtedly not the only one they're doing this for, that's piracy on a large scale. You should consider calling Apple to ask if this is a legitimate practice - which I'm 99% sure they'll say is not, at which point you should let them know what company is doing it.

  • Problems with macbook after snow leopard install

    Hi,
I recently upgraded my macbook. Saved and backed up everything from my old one and then loaded snow leopard onto the new one. Since loading snow leopard my optus wireless internet is refusing to work (Saying it has quit and wont reload), my photos in iphoto are showing up as thumbnails but not letting me see them or save them as jpegs and a lot of programs are quitting unexpectedly as i am working on them.
My biggest concerns are with my photos and internet.
Anyone know some solutions? I am a bit of an amateur with all this and don't know a lot of jargon. THanks

no, i think donv means what kind of machines new and old you have. look at the profiles of most users here - they describe in more or less detail what Macs they have and what CPUs etc. All this would be helpful for donv to advise you according to your need.

  • Help: Macbook stuck in startup screen

Earlier today, my white Macbook started running low on disk space, and I kept getting those pop-up notifications telling me to quit some applications--so I ran some cleaning operations in iTool (daily script; weekly script; delete logs, browser data, DNS cache). While iTool was running, another "low disk space" message popped up, and the computer seemed to have frozen except for the steady, hypnotic revolutions of the spinning beach ball of death.
After a while, I pressed down on the power button until the machine shut down. Now when I try to start it up, all I see is the light blue start-up screen with the Apple logo, accompanied by the usual start-up sounds. I tried rebooting several times after that, but the computer will not leave the start-up screen.
Suggestions, anyone? Possible causes (is it script-related?)? Thanks in advance!

Good for you! You knew Terminal enough to do the job.
The advice you got is good advice for those who don't know what they're doing at the Command Line.
The reason being you can make permanent changes and fool with system elements you shouldn't be touching. What you did was harmless, in fact it was helpful.
You should look for about 15% of free space on your disk. You can eliminate everything in /Library/Printers but the one you use.
Also, if you installed languages you can use Monolingual
Also, you can delete all of your /Library/Printers/except the one(s) you use.
Try to remove as much of your data as you can if you can copy it somewhere. Or, ask them to do a backup and erase & install at the store.
AFA getting "ripped off" Apple is not out to rip off customers. That's not the way they've built such a loyal base. What you need to remember is that a hard drive is a mechanical device that can fail at any time and will. You may well need a new drive.

  • Macbook Pro/Airport/Leopard drops Net connection after shutdown or sleep

I see all kinds of postings about problems with Airport and Leopard. I am pretty sure that the connectivity problem in my case stems from Leopard alone. I just bought a new Macbook Pro with Leopard installed. I have been using MacBooks running 10.4.x with Airport Extreme for several years with no problems. I still have no connectivity problems with 10.4, which is being used right now on the same Airport network. But, every time I shut down the Mac Pro or put it to sleep, it drops the connection. Here is a very weird thing: If I use network diagnostics, I can get back online right away after I put in my password (which is never saved). If I go through system preferences, it does not recognize my password at all (which is saved). I get this message: incompatible security. What does that mean?? There is something screwy in the Leopard software regarding security and passwords. Does anyone out there have a clue what is going on? I am not a computer expert and have no idea how to change security settings. I'm not even sure what they are. I do not want to do anything that will screw up the connectivity with the Macbooks running 10.4.11.

I had the same problem on my MacBook Pro for the last month or so after "updating" to 10.4.10. Yesterday I tried Loki's fix but couldn't connect at all after that. So I did an archive/install of 10.4.9 and it works better than ever before. I get full signal and it is a lot snappier and faster. The problem is likely in the 10.4.10 update, hopefully Apple will get that fixed in 10.4.11

  • Please HELP!! MacBook stuck on "Select your Keyboard" screen after installing Snow Leopard on a brand new hard drive!

Hello, I just recently replaced my internal hard drive in my MacBook [from a 250gb to a blank/empty 750gb]. I managed to get OS X Snow Leopard installed with the DVD. Setup seems to run fine at first, I get the screen in space with the welcome message different languages while music plays. Then I'm asked to select my country, then here is my problem- the next screen asks me to "Select Your Keyboard", I select & click "Continue" button, then my Mac is just showing the spinning beachball & it stayed that way all night =( I don't know how to fix this. Anyone experience this or have any solutions for me? I'd appreciate any help! Thank you! [I've been googling since yesterday with no luck on finding an answer].

It's diagnostic software. It's supposed to help you find problems. I don't think anyone is making any software yet that fixes hardware problems.
    That said, the two comments:

.....also my trackpad is behaving very erraticaly sometimes, it's like it is possessed by a ghost....
would lead me to think it's the logic board. On older MacBook Pro's both the USB I/O ports and the keyboard/trackpad are fed out of an integrated USB controller integrated into the South Bridge I/O controller. On newer models, the USB ports come out of an integrated North/South bridge controller and the keyboard/trackpad are handled by an SMC controller, which itself interfaces with the I/O controller. All of these items are on the logic board, and they're all unrepairable.
...unless of course the "internal drive [that] is installed in a cheap external case" is itself causing the problems. Another thing to try might be a different USB port, if you haven't done so already.
I didn't know the price for Scannerz went up. I could have sworn I only paid 30-some bucks for it. Maybe it was on sale at the time. I don't remember.
    In any case, good luck.

How do I fix it Help please. I already tried all the commands such as Command R, Holding down the Option key, C and holding down shift at the start up but nothing happens.
initialy All I was trying to do was downgrade 10.7 to 10.6 .

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.
