Help! Mail Compaction Error - Lost Messages

I had too many e-mails in my inbox and was selectively deleting e-mails. I got a message about a "compaction" error, and when my e-mail restarted, I had gone from 5,000 messages to 75.
I need to keep many of the lost messages -- that's why I was selectively deleting them. This happened to me once before a year or two ago, and I know there's a way to get those messages back -- but I can't find my notes.
Help! What do I do?

Hello Emily.
The folder it created contained a folder called
"split_mailboxes" but nothing ever appeared in there.
What did appear were files called "Sent Messages-0001",
"Sent Messages-0002" etc...
I believe these files are the parts into which the script breaks the troublesome mbox file within the Sent Messages.mbox package. They are in the same mbox format, just named differently, and are to be imported into Mail using the Other data format option. I believe the script should do this automatically, but apparently it didn't for some reason.
In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import all these files. You'll have to select the folder that contains the files, rather than the files themselves, when telling Mail what to import.

  • Mail Preferences and lost Messages

Had an issue after a software update: finder constantly relaunches. Tried, PRAM zap, reinstall sys, removing com.apple.finder.plist preference. Nothing worked.
Then I relocated my entire preference file. Now the problem is gone, it was some preference, I do not know which one.
Now I have to set up some programs again, or swap in the prefs from the old folder. The problem is that I have no mail boxes on my mac in mail. All of my messages from the years, catagorized into folders, are gone.
Looks like the first time I every opened mail. I have original prefs folder and all its contents, however if I swap the old prefs back into the lib, most prefs return on restart, however there is still nothing in mail and the finder relaunching error resumes.
Where did my mail go? Did new preferences for mail overwrite my entire mail archive? How can I find them? Where did they go?
Unfortunately I have been meaning to back them up ever since I lost the last backup. Too many good numbers in my emails, user names, passwords, activation codes, directions to Eden. I want them back!
    Ideas?

No real help from me I'm afraid but just had a call from my brother who was just lost all his mail setting and messages, mail is appears as if it was started for the first time. His Mail folders in the Library have his pop and mac account folders but no contents.
Have you checked if the messages are in your library? (Home > Library > Mail)

  • Backed up mail files but lost messages when changing computers

I just switched computers, from one running OS X 10.3.9 to one running OSX 10.4.9.
On my old computer I created different folders in which I stored my emails. The Help on Mail said that to backup I had to save the files on
    Home > Library > Mail
Home > Library > Application Support > Address Book
    Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist
I did that and moved these files into the corresponding location in the new computer. I can see all the folders, but they are all empty. Have I lost my saved emails forever?

The folders in the Mail application are empty. So the folders transferred, but the emails I had stored in them didn´t.
On the backups I made I can see:
    - In the Home>Library>Mail folder:
    1- a file named DefaultCounts
    2- a file named LSMMap
    3- a file named LSMMap2
    4- a file named MessageSorting.plist
    5- a file named MessageSorting.plist.backup
    6- a file named Signatures.plist
7- a folder named Mailboxes with a folder named like each of the folders I had created in Mail (which are all empty), and a folder named like each of the folders I had created in Mail, next to the folder name is the extension .mbox. And inside each one of these are 4 files named content_index, Info.plist, mbox, tableofcontents
8- a folder named POPmypopaccountname which contains folders named Inbox.mbox, Delete Messages.mbox, Drafts.mbox, Sent Messages.mbox. Each one of these has 4 files named content_index, Info.plist, mbox, tableofcontents. This folder also has a file named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded

  • Mail delivery error when trying to send document to hpeprint. I know the email address is correct

I just got the HP8600.  I set up eprint according to the instructions.  When I email a document to the printer, I get a Mail Delivery error:
This message was created automatically by the mail system (ecelerity).
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:
    >>> [email protected] (reading confirmation): 550 5.7.1 Command
    >>> rejected
I know the email address is correct.  I don't know what to do to get this to work.

The Q.com provider seems to have issues sending to our servers for some reason. Other email providers will work fine like you've found with your gmail account. The best workaround at this time is to send from your gmail account if possible.

  • More Lost Mail After Compacting Error

I've seen this problem in a few posts, but still have not been able to get back the missing email. While deleting a bunch of messages, I got the compaction error message, and when I restarted the email, almost all the messages were gone. I followed the steps to put the inbox on the desktop and import it back to mail, but due to its absurdly large size (1.49G, and yes, I imagine that's the root of all my problems) the mail crashed. I tried using mboxbreaker, but got "Error-48 already an item with that name" and "Error- 2753 the variable spec is not defined". Any help will be much appreciated; while the vast majority of the lost messages should have been deleted long ago, there are some important personal things amongst the sludge.

yeah, i just don't get it. the settings are exactly the same...i've made sure of that. connection doctor says everything is fine...and outmail mail works. but new mail just sits in my web based inbox, and mac mail never pulls it off...frustrating. out of all the problems i thought i might have when doing a fresh install, i didn't expect this one.

    Hello lclaunch22
You may need to validate the account with Hotmail. When logged in to the Hotmail account on a computer, there are instructions on how to do this.

  • "Compaction Error" in Mail

I continue to get a "compaction error" when I try to delete emails/move them to my junk. It says my mailbox is too full and yet I can't delete anything because it is too full! I've tried all sorts of combinations of deleting, etc. Help please!

Hirschee's message of 30 May (and others previously) describes the same problem I am experiencing. It seems to arise when the Inbox gets too full.
I solved it once before by freeing up space on the hard disk, but that has not worked this time. It is nightmarish not being able to delete.
    I have a POP account.
    Any advice gratefully received.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
What type of account do you have -- POP, IMAP or
    .mac?
If IMAP (or .mac) what are your selections in Mail
    Preferences/Accounts/Special Mailboxes (assumes you
are running Panther as your Profile reports)? It
appears you may be leaving deleted messages in the
    Inbox?

  • Mail on success or error in message processing

    Hi experts
I need to configure a scenario
    1. Receive idoc from an SAP system
    2. Convert the Idoc into File and Place it in the NFS File directory.
    3. On success of the message, I need to mail to SAP Owner regarding the success of the message.
    4. On error as well , i need the error details to the SAP Owner.
I had configued all the basic steps in IR. I had struck with the BPM part.
Please suggest with the steps in the BPM.
    Thnz

    hi Mohamed,
For sending the mail on success or error in message processing you need to go to the runtime workbench and configure the scenario for mail alerts.
You need to create the alert rules for the success scenario and the failure scenario.
While creating the rules you can specify the message id's to which the mail should be sent.
Please refer to the below link for more clarification.

  • Compaction Error in Mail etc.

Yesterday I started getting a compaction error from Mail when I tried to delete large portions of the Inbox. Although I could delete a few emails at a time and then quit. they were back after the next compaction. Today I tried to troubleshoot it, and I think I made it worse. Note: I was unaware of the "Rebuild" mailbox option.
I eventually found this forum discussion and it sounded like my problem, so I tried it:
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account).
Move the account named folder to the Desktop. The account named folder contains all mailboxes associated with the account such as the account's Inbox and Sent mailbox.
Launch Mail and a new account named folder will be created automatically by Mail within the Mail folder.
I tried Mail again, and now I somehow had lots of junk mail back which I'd long since deleted, in my old Inbox. I was also missing some emails, from Jan. 2, 2007 'til now. I "got new mail", and it's only from Feb. 5 2007 'til now (1 month on the server.)
The size of the old Inbox was 96.4 MB. After importing it, it's 87.2 MB. Would that account for the missing emails? If so, how do I get them back?
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   22 GB free on hard drive

Thanks for the response. Sorry that was so confusing.
I found the "instructions to import the old mailboxes from the original POP account named folder moved to the Desktop" in another thread, and I'll be darned if I can find that thread again today.
(This should be a bit more clear.)
I removed the PoP account to the Desktop, opened mail so it recreated the Inbox, and imported the contents of the original PoP folder into mail.
After importing, I had the imported Old Inbox containing deleted junk mail which somehow returned, and some emails were missing. I tried the same deletion of large blocks of mail that caused the error message in the original Inbox, only now it worked perfectly.
    > I "got new mail", and it's only from Feb. 5
2007 'til now (1 month on the server.)
This is for/within the old Inbox mailbox that was
imported from the old account named folder moved to
    the Desktop?
Nope, the new mail was in the original Inbox-mailbox, which was clear until I hit Shift-Command-N. The Old Inbox is in its own, newly-created-when-imported mailbox.
    Pre-import Old Inbox contents:
    content_index 3.7 MB
    content_index-(null)-303 2.4 MB
    content_index-localhost-257 2.6 MB
    content_index-localhost-393 948 KB
    Info.plist 4 KB
    mbox 86.4 MB
    tableofcontents 232 KB

had to shut down due to time constrictions, sorry for pushing the need for help, but I was desperate to recover vital lost messages. I tried everything suggested in the Mail help records and past discussion posts. At this point (next morning) my mail is still lost.
    any suggestions will be appreciated.

    HELP! URGENT! lost email messages!
    Posted: Jan 21, 2007 6:29 PM
I started, two days ago, receiving four of each message coming to me. I just looked at my accounts and saw two of my primary account (POP.ipa.net is the Incoming mail server), I'd never seen the second one before, so I deleted it.
Went to my (Mac Mail ver. 2.1) mail browser and all my inbox and sent and junk messages now show the same message: "The message from [email protected] concerning “Receipt for Your Payment to (account name)” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
    WHAT!!!!!!??????
I went to Apple discussions and found a problem similar from today and followed the advice there by David Gimeno:
"In the Finder, go to the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder, and look at the contents of INBOX.mbox and Sent Messages.mbox."
did this and found nothing under either .mbox folder ...
HELP!!! IMPORTANT MESSAGES ARE IN THE BALANCE!

If you deleted a POP account, then all your mail stored in that account’s mailboxes has been wiped out, not just moved somewhere, and you were warned that this would happen by the following alert:
    Remove Account
Are you sure you want to remove the <AccountType> account "<AccountName>"?
This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Messages stored on the mail server will not be affected.
To prevent that from happening, you should have moved your mail to custom “On My Mac” mailboxes instead of leaving it in the account’s mailboxes.
If the messages are not on the server, and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten. Actually, your anxiety may very well have already caused some of those messages to be irretrievably lost.
As to why you appear to have lost messages from the account that remains in Mail as well, note that for each account, Mail creates a folder within ~/Library/Mail/ whose name starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Deleting a mail account causes the corresponding account folder to be deleted as well.
You should never, ever, set up two accounts in Mail with the same Account Type, User Name, and Incoming Mail Server. Two such accounts would share the same account folder in the filesystem, and deleting one of them would cause the (shared) account folder to be deleted as well...

  • "Error sending message" - I really need help

Hello. I have not been an iPhone user for too long, so thereas i do not know much about it. I do have an iPhone however, and everything worked just perfect up to 1 week ago. Here is what happened:
I tried to send a text message (SMS) to one of my friends, and first it said "error sending message" but then it was sent afterall, so i didnt bother. 1 day after, I could not send SMS to ANYONE else, not even an unknown number, nothing. it said "error sending message" EVERY time. What happened:
    *tried to send SMS
    *got the error
    *lost ALL my signal
    *NO SIGNAL message
    *NO SIM message
    *FULL signal back
    *Carrier found again
The point is, that when i try sending a message, it comes up to 3/4 or so, and then shows the error and so on. it won't send ANY messages anymore
    I CAN receive messages
    I CAN make phone calls
I CAN send SMS from another phone
So my figure is, that the problem is the phone its self, not the SIM card. Is it making a contact??
I did a little research, and found out this:
*Many, many 1.1.2 iPhones have this issue.
*If you experience it, you may find a solution, but it's so that they do not all work on all phones (which is surprising to be honest)
*However, stunningly is that everybody are able to receive messages
    What happens:
*in most cases, it happens like this:
    -try to send a message
    - it comes to 3/4, then stops and says "error sending message"
    -phone looses signal
-phone tells you there is NO SIGNAL
-5sec later phone has FULL signal
-this is sometimes followed by a "Locked SIM" sign
    what i have experienced now:
*i found out that sometimes, for some reason the message sending "comes back" tho it doesnt stay long.
*if you try to send a message, and it errors you, you hit home.. if you then go back to messages you can see the unsent one, but if you look at the number its in a format (ex): 1919<1919> or Rebecca<+2183481481>
and not 1919 only. I have seen this only in case its not send, otherwise it's 1919.
This is it. Please, I really don't know what to do, and I hope anyone of you guys that might know more about the iphone might help me. I have really tried everything!

    Please, can someone help me??

  • Mail update and lost inbox messages

I am new to Macs. When I opened my Macbook today it automatically started an update to Mail. when it was done my settings for my ISP changed (eliminated my account settings and all that's there now is .Mac which I signed up for as a curiosity but don't use) deleted my inbox, deleted my sent messages and seems to have left all my other message alone.
Is this a virus? How do I get my lost message back? I don't see any references to a mail software update when I do Google searches. As much as I dislike Outliook I have to say I've never experienced anything like this and I'm concerned. I may be at fault since I just used the Mail software and didn't spend a lot of time researching it. Did I do something wrong or is there something else wrong?

What’s the capacity and space available on your startup disk? Take a look at the comments about disk space in the following article, in case they apply to you:
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space
Even if there is enough space available on the startup disk, for some reason that remains a mystery to me, Mail sometimes “thinks” it must discard the current ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and create a new one. As a result, all your non-.Mac account settings (but not the messages themselves), which are stored in that file, are lost.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what’s it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), quit Mail if it’s running, and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. This is where all your mail is stored.
    You have three options now:
    (1) Restore com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
    (2) Set up your non-.Mac accounts in Mail again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    (3) Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try moving the new com.apple.mail.plist out of ~/Library/Preferences/ (e.g. to the Desktop) and rename the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Since Mail decided to discard it, I would expect this file to be corrupt (I don’t understand why would Mail discard it and create a new one otherwise), but apparently that often is not the case and the settings can indeed be restored by just renaming the file.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.
