Help Make my iMac New Again!

Hey there friends,
Here's my deal. I just got a new MacBook Pro for my wife and it's blazing fast. So much so that it has caused resentment towards my old, slow iMac G4. I figure after five years of futzing with it, I've installed a number of things that are probably slowing it down. In all my OS upgrades over the years I've always gone for the easy install. But it's time for my iMac to reborn, like the little speed demon she once was.
I just got a 250GB Firewire external hard drive (7200rpm/8mb cache). I have my Tiger install discs back out again. What now? I figure I'll use SuperDuper to make an exact copy of my hard drive on the external. But then what?
* What's the optimal way to make my iMac factory fresh?
* Once I install it, what can I copy back over from the my external hard drive and what should I freshly re-install? I don't want to waste too much time, but I also don't want to bog down the computer again.
* Also, since I haven't done it yet, I have over 30 GB of music. Am I better off keeping that on the external hard drive or will I notice a lag when trying to play things?
A link to a previous post you found helpful (or wrote) and/or a link to a guide you've used for such a situation would be helpful. Or why not type up a fresh one and help me and certainly others with this somewhat terrifying but ultimately liberating procedure.
Thanks,
cg

Honestly, I think what you propose to do is the wrong path. Making an iMac G4 "factory fresh" is not going to yield a signficant performance increase. Your "factory fresh" iMac will still be running on the same hardware with the same OS and presuambly the same apps. So you are proposing to spend a lot of time trying to fix a problem that can't be fixed in that manner.
What you need to look at is possibly optimizing your iMac's hard drive with Disk Warrior and perhaps adding more RAM if its RAM is not already maxed out.
You might also look at utilization of your iMac's boot drive. You need to make sure that 10-15% of the disk's total capacity is always available to the OS for internal use.
Doing this stuff might yield an improvement in processing speed, but do not expect anything near to what you see on your wife's new MacBook Pro. To get that kind of performance boost, you need to replace your iMac with a modern Mac.

  • Impossible to make the imac run again

    hello, I have got a brand new iMac and after shutting down for updating software it is impossible to make this machine run again? Any idea what happened?

    If it's brand new, and it won't boot at all (no sound, no light, etc.), then bring it in to your nearest Apple Store for warranty service.
    Even if it is making some sound, or generating some light, if it's brand new then it's under warranty. Call your local Apple Store for an appointment and bring it in for in-person help.

  • How Can I Make My iMac Fast Again?

    Using Lion my iMac has become slow. I decided to double my memory and it helped...a little. But overall my iMac is much slower than when it was running Snow Leopard. How do I fix this?

    you have too many processes running at once according to the picture above of your activity manager. you have only 140.4 MB of ram that are free and 4.64 GB that are inactive. the other 3+ GB of ram are either wired or active. what each of these means is that you are using 3 GB at one time you have  4+ GB that are doing nothing at all and only 1/10th of a GB that is left for new processes and random movements. my suggestion would be to get the iMemory Cleaner app from the mac app store and use it on your system it will clean out your ram cards and give you a fresh start. Another program i recomend is CleanMyMac.

  • I need to delete everything off my ipod and make it like new again..

    because i used to update it on my old computer but we got rid of it and all my songs weren't from the itunes store and now when i try to plug it into my new laptop it won't do anything.. i just want to like delete everything off of it and reset the whole thing without needing to connect the ipod to a computer.

    You can't restore and erase everything without connecting to your computer. Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting documents? They may be of some help:

    If an image opens in a different application but you want it to always open in Preview when you double-click it, do this one time: Control-click the file, let go of the Control key, press the Option key, then choose Always Open With > Preview. Or, select the image file, choose Get Info from the File menu, then change the "Opens with:" pop-up menu choice to Preview.

    I'm trying to make iCloud mail my primary email but I'm concerned that I may have lost the perfect email address forever.

    I have the same problem. After our wedding I've created an alias ([email protected]) to my actual AppleID Account ([email protected]). Now I'd the idea to delete the alias and my actual AppleID to create a new AppleID with ([email protected]).
    Is there really no possibilty to do this?

    Is there a phone number to call Adobe.  I go around an endless loop pressing their contact info tabs?  Maybe someone at this sight can help. I am new to digital photo - I have been a B&W film photographer for many years. I have a problem with a Macbook Air.  It was working fine - I was using LR and a message came on the screen that said something like the memory was dangerously low.  I stopped and tried to delete LR files.  I couldn't do it.  I closed the program and tried reopening and got the message that there is not enough memory available to open LR.  I contacted Apple.  They spent a half hour on the phone with me and eventually told me they didn't know how to help. The tech said that LR had gobbled up all the memory and said I should contact Adobe and ask where and how my photo files are stored and to delete them.  I have several back-ups.  Thanks - Arthur

    This sort of error message only comes up for Lightroom when your hard disk is full. Indeed this has nothing to do with internal memory as that will be intelligently be dealt with. If you have a mac Book Air that is not so surprising as the cheapest versions come with very small hard disks and if you shoot raw with any recent camera, you'll fill up your hard disk very quickly and you can probably only store a few months of pictures if you are a typical photographer. So the bottom line is that you need to create some room on your hard disk. You should move some of your originals to an external hard disk. You can also delete some of your backup copies of your catalog file that Lightroom automatically generates every few days and that quickly gobble up hard disk space. So first figure out how full your hard disk is. To see that, go to the apple menu, hit -> About this Mac -> More info->Storage. You should see your internal hard disk on top and you'll find that it is almost entirely full with photos. Now find your Lightroom catalog file using Finder. It is usually in a folder in the Pictures folder in your home directory. You should see a Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file, a previews file and a folder called backups. Inside the backups folder, you'll find a lot of subfolders. They have names that show the dates the backups were created. If you have backups of your entire hard disk, you can delete these backups when they are older than a few months. I usually only keep the last 4 around. Just drag the folders into the trash can on the dock on the bottom of your screen and empty the trash. This will probably free up enough space that Lightroom will already run again. Now start thinking about where you will want to store older images. If you have a good USB3 or Thunderbolt hard disk that is probably the best option. There is a video here by Adobe that has some instructions on how to do this: Is Your Hard Drive Full? Here’s How to Move Images to Another Drive in Lightroom. « Julieanne Kost's Blog If that doesn't work because you don't have enough hard drive space to run Lightroom yet, here is another set of instructions to move your files using the finder to the other hard disk: How do I move only my photos to another hard drive, leaving the catalog where it is? - The Lightroom Queen. If you follow that, as soon as you confirm all your images are on the new hard disk, you can delete them from your internal one. She is not so clear about that part but if you don't delete the originals that you moved off you don't free up space. You should move the folder structure over to the new hard disk and then reconnect the folders in Lightroom. That should make it refind all your images.
    That said, if you are uncomfortable with the computer in itself, your best bet is to find a local photography club. There is invariably a Lightroom savvy person in there that could help you move your files. That might be your best bet if you are uncomfortable moving these yourself. A general mac savvy person like you would find at an Apple store or so generally will not be able to help you with this except when they are photographers themselves and know Lightroom. You might get lucky with that.

  • Pls help!  Creating a new simple jsp iView...

    Hi, I would like to create a totally new iView JSP project from scratch.  I currently have NetWeaver and EP 6.0.  This is what I have done so far on NetWeaver: <b>File > New > Project > Select Portal Application > click 'Next' > Type in Project name and root folder > click 'FINISH'</b>.  Now, I think I have a project ready?  I have some basic iView JSP code already.   so now can someone provide me with detailed steps on what modifications and steps I need to make on my new project in order for my iView jsp to display on the EP 6.0?  Any files like 'portalapp.xml' that I have to modify?
    Thank you so much for your help,
    Baggett.
    What I know so far: I have looked at an example where I created one using an existing par.  I know how to export .par file to EP 6.0, it's the steps before that I don't know.  Thanks again.

    Hi, I think I found a little solution to my problem but now I have a new issue.  I think I "solved" my problem by doing:  <b>File > New > Project > Select Portal Application > click 'Next' > Type in Project name and root folder > click 'FINISH'.  Now, I do:
    File > New > Other > Portal Application > Create a new Portal Application Object > Select my Project > Portal Component/JSPDynPage (is this the 'easy' one to pick b/c it seems to update the portalapp.xml file, creates a jsp file (myFirstJSP.jsp) and bean for me) > I type in all the textfields for file name, package name, ... > click 'FINISH'. </b>
    Is this a correct/good way of starting a JSP project(I don't really know what a JSPDynPage is)
    Now I have a new issue.  I open up myFirstJSP.jsp and NetWeaver highlights all the code (pasted below) in yellow and there is no error displayed:
    <b><hbj:content id="myContext" >
      <hbj:page title="PageTitle">
       <hbj:form id="myFormId" >
       </hbj:form>
      </hbj:page>
    </hbj:content></b>
    So I try to paste this line into myFirstJSP.jsp: <b><%@ taglib uri="tagLib" prefix="hbj" %></b>and also paste this line onto portalapp.xml:
    <b><component-profile>
            <property name="tagLib" value="/SERVICE/htmlb/taglib/htmlb.tld"/>
    </component-profile>    </b>
    Now, I get an error saying: <b>"JSP Parsing Error:File "/dist/PORTAL_INF/pagelet/tagLib" not found"</b>
    Why is this?  How can I fix it?
    Thanks so much,
    Baggett.

  • What will it take to get Apple to make iOS 6 available again?

    As customers, what can we do to persuade Apple to make iOS 6 available again? I am well aware of the fact that no one put a gun to our head and made us download this new operating system. I even watched the Apple dog and pony show in June, so I should have known better! But as a senior user, I had no idea that the thin line fonts would be so hard to read. The phone keypad is a good example. Is anyone out there having similar problems?
    Thanks in advance for answers to my questions.

    Sadly, Apple codes the new updates in a way so you can't downgrade to the previous update, such as iOS 6.
    But you can change the font! Go to:
    SETTINGS>>GENERAL>>ACCESSIBILITY and there is a whole new section to customize the iOS 7 font.

  • How Can i clean my memory and make my imac more faster ?

    I am new user in mac i have imac 4 g ram  and need a way to clean the memory and make my imac more faster ...

    You can't "clean" RAM. If the "storage" space on your hard drive isn't enough then put in a larger hard drive or delete any of your data you no longer need or can store on an external drive. Beyond this I cannot say because you have not provided enough information such as the amount of installed RAM, Capacity of your hard drive and the amount of available space on the hard drive, the specific iMac model you have.
    You can try reinstalling Lion:
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
    However, if your computer doesn't have enough RAM or your hard drive is full, then reinstalling won't help.

  • Help! 2006 imac need Mountain Lion to run Photoshop elements

    Hi, getting very frustrated : (
    Have a 2006 Imac Intel; upgraded to snow leopard last year; now wanted to run Photoshop elements. Imac says NO. We needed Mountain Lion- ordered this online, computer says NO. Need more memory. So have bought and installed new memory (2gb + 1gb). Computer still says no, wont download Mountain Lion.
    I just want to use elements!!
    Any help appreciated, I'm not that computer savvy
    Thanks : D
    Gareth

    The new version PSE will run on OS X 10.7 Lion.
    PSE 12 runs on 10.7- 10.9
    Here are the system requirements for OS X 10.7 Lion.
    To use Lion, make sure your computer has the following:
    An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store
    7 GB of available disk space
    2 GB of RAM
    To find out info about your system
    Click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears. Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.
    Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.
    Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply. This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.
    If your 2006 iMac can run Lion then you can purchase a Lion install code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    Before installing a major systems upgrade, it would be prudent to have a viable backup of your current system and important data in case something should go wrong with the installation.
    Good Luck!
