Help making an old ATI Rage XL work

I have an old-ish server (from 2006-2007 more or less) that was using solaris until some months ago but was taken out of service.
It was running X with a very basic DE.
Today, I was trying to give it a new use, but I face the problem that I cannot manage to make the video card to work
lspci reports this:
05:06.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Rage XL (rev 27) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
And I installed xorg, xorg-apps and xorg-drivers but it does not seem to work auto-magically...
I tried installing the closed source drivers without luck:
When KDE is supposed to start, I get a black screen: No mouse even and the inability of switching to a text based console....
The graphic card is integrated in the motherboard..... I hope someone can at least point me in the right direction: It's nice hardware to be used with arch and it would be a shame letting it to get forgotten in a corner forever accumulating dust.
Any ideas would help.
Thanks!

Ok, I removed the vesa driver and updated the system, now I get this:

I don't know if feeling more confused or relieved that the error log looks to be more specific now... xD
EDIT:
I installed hwd from AUR and ran hwd -X
Two config files were created: xorg.conf.ati and xorg.conf.vesa
The .ati one didn't work, but the .vesa one did!!!!
Now I can at least run KDE and knowing the card has 8Mb of memory, I think I cannot get anything better..... No animations, but they are not necessary at all......
Changing vesa for mach64 on the driver section didn't work either.... the module loads, then unloads, like before....
Solved perhaps or do you have any more ideas?
Thanks!!!

Here's another one from November 13th.
    'Good morning one & all,
We've been cranking out code with the RED team, lining up for the same schedule.
Next week we'll ship a full native workflow for RED in Premiere Pro CS4, After Effects CS4 and even Encore CS4 (the RED to Blu workflow).
We've come a long way since the IBC demos --- more performance, more stability, more options, and tuning it to CS4 which is architected for 64 bit systems so that you can stuff it full of memory and get that smooth as butter experience.
Import your R3D files, change resolution on the fly, pop into full resolution for some detail work, drop all the way down to 1/16th for fast cuts on a laptop --- it's all there.
We're right up to 2K at full performance with the latest drop.
Oh, and did I mention that we're working the RED gang on exposing more control on the realtime de-bayering ? ... and of course with Assimilate on making it a full, clean, raw end to end workflow ?
Expect the importer to be posted with RED and linked from Adobe before Thanksgiving. Nov 20th is looking like the date (not that dates ever change).
Many thanks to our beta-testers ... you've been awesome turning things around and helping us shape the future.
    It's cool.
    It's Christmas come early.
    Enjoy.'

  • Getting Asus ATI 4870 to work in my Mac Pro. Not working. please help!

I read here on these boards that an ATI 4870 would work in an early model (in my case, 2006) Intel Mac Pro.
I jumped in hastily and bought the Asus branded card: EAH4870
I connected it, and nothing... did not work.
I do not think it is a Mac version of this card, perhaps intended to be used in a windows machine.
    Questions:
    - Do I need to "flash: this card to make it work in my Mac Pro OSX 10.6.3?
    - Are there Mac drivers for this card? I can't find anything anywhere
    - Basically, can I get this card to work, or do I need to PAY the extra $$$$ just to have a "Mac" version of this.
Keep in mind, I am not a techie, I need to do Work, not fiddle with this kind of stuff.. unfortunately, a software package crucial for a job is very finicky and works with only a handful of cards.. The 4870 is one of them.
I do not have dual boot, and no windows machines to "flash" or rework this card.
If you can help me to get this card to work, it would be MOST appreciated!!!

It is not a Mac version. It does not have the required EFI boot ROM needed to work on the Mac. Video drivers are contained in OS X. Either you have to have the card flashed (this is illegal) or buy a Mac version of the card.
If you aren't a "techie" then you don't have the hardware needed to flash the ROM nor know how. Because this site belongs to Apple we cannot help you with something that is illegal.

I need help identifying an old Macintosh game: it was a painting game where you rode a roller coaster to an art museum and you got to pick what kind of art work you were going to make. It was animated, 2D i believe. This was the early 90's and I've been trying to hunt it down. I think there was some kind of animal in it, a giraffe maybe?

Could you be thinking of Microsoft Home's "Fine Artist" for Macintosh, as shown in this Amazon.com listing?  This program was bundled with the Performa series of Macs during the mid-90s.

What was this program for, or did you just assume it's something you shouldn't have and therefore arbitrarily decide to "throw it away"? Exactly how did you supposedly throw it away?
If you didn't change your administrator password, there's no reason it shouldn't work now, so that suggests you did something else, or changed it and then forgot what it was.
You can't recover that password; you can only change it. To do that, you would need to boot from your Snow Leopard DVD, choose your language, then choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu in the top menu bar.

As already provided, if you don't have such in your iTunes library, on your computer, then there is no way to put it back on your phone. Apps are DRM protected, so even if you found a copy somewhere, you wouldn't be able to use it.

Just want to avoild spending hours migrating everything across....

Yes, I can read but just can't write DVD's. I get:
This disc can’t be verified and might be unreliable. Try again using a new blank disc (error code 0x80020063).
Originally I thought it was the old Moutain Lion DVD drive issue (but have had the drive recently replaced by Apple), so I tried creating a new account, which worked.
In the old account I have reset SMU, Pram... but no change.

  • HOWTO Configure this $+%#& ATI rage Mobility 9700?

    Hi all !
I bought a wonderful laptop. all works great instead of WiFi and my ATI rage mobility 9700.
for the wifi issue, I have time but I need my ATI Card 'cause I now writing openGL application.
This is what I did :
    -- pacman -S ati-drivers and pacman -S ati-drivers-module-kernel26
-- I Configured xorg (I lanched fglxconfig (or something like that) and I copy in my xorg.conf the change.
    -- I added fglx in my rc.conf
-- No problem when launching X
    BUT :
-- mplayer doesn't play in full screen any more
-- xine doesn't work any more
-- And I do not have acceleration (foobillard loaded but he's verrrry slow)
-- But I can write OpenGL application if they are not accelerated.
the problem is : I need xine or mplayer and I want to play game :-p
What can I do to configure this ATI card ?
    Thanks for advance,
    Namlook :-(

    ibeRtus;
You have been kind to attempt to help this old man (79) with fine suggestions but they haven't provided a solution to my problem.
I have just finished reading the forum Documentation Discussion...ATI Radeon &Kernel2.6 -Updated.
This forum post has 208 replies, 14 pages and 29,564 views and its all about the ATI fglrx install.
I have generated an observation of this mayhem, which states that one must hand-make one's own kernel(no stock kernel will work with the "fix").  This observation is listed in the NOOBIE forum.
I do expect that the ATI fix will be necessary in the next pacman -Syu kernel download as well.
I am sending my ATI cards back to ATI in disgust.  Archlinux is from Canadians and ATI is from Canada!!!! Doesn't speak well for ATI.
I am trying everything that applies to kernel2.6.10 in archlinux0.7CD install and find no reference to that install with respect to ATI modules.
My best advice is to dump ATI and I am taking my own advice!!!!
    Thanks much for your suggestions.
I did try your suggested hyperlinks and reported the same errors occured.
I am looking forward to a better video experience with a new video card!

  • Questions regarding ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card in Sawtooth

Hi, i was checking on the web regarding the specs of my Sawtooth and stumbled upon this page: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg4/stats/powermac_g4_400agp.html
My Sawtooth comes with the ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card. Its indicated the max resolution support is 1920x1200. I was wondering if it is able to support resolution 1680x1050 for wide monitors like the Samsung 205BW? Have anyone tried using a wide screen monitor with the Rage 128 pro card? Does it work well?
I'm not a gamer and i don't intend to upgrade the graphic card. (Though it would be nice to get my hands on the a Radeon 8500 or 9000.) I mainly do graphic work, and currently using a Samsung 740B monitor set at 1280x1028 resolution.

Hi, I posted the exact same question in another forum, and i was directed to this link: http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=58395
So i guess it does work. Though maybe, to a certain extend, like mentioned by one of the forum members:
"My old Sawtooth 400MHz G4 had an ATI Rage 128. It drove my 20inch Apple Cinema Display (the current design) with DVI. Not the best graphics, but it could do it, and without any hacks too..."
Hope this helps with anyone having the same questions... : )

  • Help making a Install USB of os x 10.4.6. for my Macbook 1.8ghz

    Hi,
I need help making the USB install of os Tiger.
The drive is having trouble reading the install disc I own so I am trying to make a USB install of it.
I wantto install from the usb not install to it to be clear.
    Things I have!
    X1 8gig sandisk flash drive
1 Macbook white 1.8 ghz Intel
    1 Pc with Macdrive 7
1 Install disc that seems to have trouble being read in the drive > few marks on the disc and the mac DVD drive make lots of noise reading it but
It will go to Disk utilities.
Seems to be a bug in Tiger and restore doesn’t seem to work as in I can’t drag and drop a source to the restore the DVD to the flash drive.
I already tried only 1 time to copy the DVD to the formatted flash drive using Macdrive and it read it as a bootable drive but the apple simple came up
And then I got a the error (Can’t find driver for this platform error APCH or something like that.
I have a torrent download of OS x 10.4.6 as well just in case some files are corrupted > I own the disk so it’s not illegal.
I am new to mac but long time user of PC.

Ok ..you need another Mac to make this work!
you just use another mac even a old one like g4 to make a restore to a flash drive that you have formatted and verified.
    Bye

  • ATi Rage 128 PRO with DVI adaptor

I got a PowerMac G4 with Ati Rage 128 Pro which has a VGA and a DVI port on it
I would like to know if the DVI port going to work with the Apple DVI to Video adaptor?
I know the postage of the adaptor said it is only for PowerMac G5 and Mac mini but is there any differences between the DVI port on the ATi Rage 128 PRO and those on G5 and Mac Mini?
Is there any other solution that I can output the display to a TV with s-video or RGB?

It's not the port, but the card that matters. The conversion to video is done by the card. The adapter just sends the output to the correct pins. I think the only cards that work are the recent ATI cards. Yours is probably too old. ATI's web-site doesn't have any information on it.
Is there any other solution that I can output the
display to a TV with s-video or RGB?
You can get a newer graphics card or use a VGA to Video converter.
