Help making slideshow using iPhoto & iMovie

How can I make the photos in my iPhoto album remain in the same order when imported into iMovie?  I have created an album and a playslist of music.  When I bring the music into the project, only the first song shows up so it is impossible to add beat markers to the whole set.  Also every time I add the photo album the photos are out of order from how they are in the album in iPhoto.....how can I fix this?  There are 207 photos so adding them individually is not an option.

I wish I could help you. I have had good luck dragging in albums from iPhoto, and it will keep its order. However, if I drag an iPhoto Event, it will not keep its order.
For music, you need to drag one at a time. A playlist from iTunes will not work.

  • Pictures are blurry when slideshow is burned to dvd using iPhoto, iMovie and iDvd. How do I correct?

I used iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD... How do I create a slideshow burned to a DVD without getting blurry images when slideshow is played through DVD a player?

You created the slideshow using the built-in Ken Burns effect in iPhoto or iMovie? I've never found that to be up to my expectations; additionally, if the people or objects in the pictures have certain designs (in their clothes), using movement can blur them. I use Photo to Movie myself - to me it creates the smoothest movement in slideshows. Another possibility is the size of your images: did you increase or decrease their original size? And when you encoded it, what settings did you use? I use the Share > Quicktime > Expert settings and then choose these options:
I've found that these settings result in the most lossless conversion. After the new .mov file is saved to the desktop, I then add it to iDVD after creating a customized menu and theme.

Here's my take on the same thing:
Short answer: the dpi is set when you decide what size you're printing at.
Long Answer: Dpi means nothing in the digital world of your computer. There are no "inches" to have "dots per..." Size is measured in pixels. That's the same on your camera. It doesn't take 10 x 8 or 6 x 4 shots. It takes shots measured in megapixels. For instance 4,000 x 3,000 is a 12 megapixel camera.
Using that example, that shot from that camera has 12 million pixels. So that's how many "Dots" there are. To decide the ratio of dots per inch, you now need to decide the "inches" part. And that's printing. Print at 10 x 8 and the dpi will be 4,000/10 or about 400 dpi. At 6 x 4 then it's 4,000/6 or 660 dpi. Work the other way: Print at 300 dpi and the resulting image will be about 13 inches on the longer side.
So, your photo as a fixed number of pixels. Changing the dimensions of the print will vary the dpi, changing the dpi will vary the dimensions of the print.

  • Making QT Movie slideshow from iPhoto/iMovie with sharp images

Can anyone tell me how to make a QT slideshow that has sharp images after the rendering stage, or if there is any software that can make a good slideshow for a photographer to show clients

It all depends on your "distribution" format and the video codecs used in it.
iMovie isn't a good tool because it is intended to be used on true "video" and would have to convert your images into video formats.
To avoid conversion your should use QuickTime Pro to assemble your project and leave it in a QuickTime format (no exports to iDVD).
Video formats have a predefined frame rate. TV is 29.97 frames per second and your single image file would have hundreds of "duplicates" depending on the frame rate.
QuickTime Pro can create files that have widely varying frame rates. You could have one frame play for 10 seconds and the next play for 1 second. Mix and match to your hearts content.
Older version of iPhoto could also make these low frame rate files but newer versions make your image files into "video" so that leaves iPhoto out (for the most part). There are some tricks but I won't go into them here.
To make a project using QuickTime Pro you would first resize your images to the final distribution dimensions. For playback via computer your could size them to the dimensions of your screen. For "projector" projects size them at 640X480 (4:3 aspect).
You can import these as an "Image Sequence" using QuickTime Pro if you want all the images be displayed at the same frame rate.
Let's assume you have 50 images from a multi-megabyte digital camera. You can use iPhoto to export them (to a Desktop folder) to resize them to computer display size (your screen resolution) or to a fixed size (640X480 for TV or projector).
Use the Finder to rename the files in sequence (1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc.) and open the image sequence via QuickTime Pro.
You could also add them one at a time to an audio track. This allows you to vary the display time of your images.
Open the first of your image files using QuickTime Pro.
Select all (Command-A) and Copy (Command-C).
Open an audio file with QuickTime Pro and make a selection (via the controller to set in and out points). Once you have a selection use the Edit menu and choose "Add to Selection & Scale".
This will add your single image file to the duration of that selection.
Leave the "out" point as your next "in" point and make a new selection in the audio track. Open your next image file and repeat the steps above. If you want to display all black (no video) you could move the selection further forward in the timeline (past the previous image).
Now your file has your series of images or individual files set in a timeline. You could "Delete" the audio track (to play just the images) to keep just your varying frame rate movie.

  • Sorting pictures in numerical order for slideshow using Iphoto 7.1.3

I have scanned hundreds of old slides and assigned titles with an ascending numerical code which I hoped Iphoto would then sort numerically in a slide show.
    This is not happening!
When I sort by title (the numerical code) Iphoto seems to place them in some binary
    sequence e.g. 1,10,100,101,102 etc. I want them 1,2,3,4,5,etc.
Help! What am I doing wrong? How can I get them in proper numerical sequence without manually moving them around on the screen?
When I view the files in their folder as a list they all show in proper numerical sequence. Why will Iphoto not sort them the same way?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. At Terence pointed out the alphanumerical listing in iPhoto requires a zero to be added before numbers 1 thru 9 (for less than 99 photos) in order for the numbers to be in the natural order. Renaming as Terence suggested, Photos->Batch Change->Title to Text with sequential numbers added will pad zeros accordingly so you'll get -01, -02, etc., or if more than 100 files, -001, -002, -020, etc.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • What is the best sequence to make a DVD using iPhoto & iMovie?

I've been reading for days it seems, and decided to ask here.  Is this even possible?  I've done it with past versions of the software but now I have all the latest updates and their possibilities are unfamiliar to me.
I want to make a DVD with about 11-12 chapters for elderly family members to play on their TVs.  It covers 40 years of family reunions.  I'm starting with all photos, no video.  I have edited the photos and organized them in albums in iPhoto.  I would like each album to result in a chapter on the final DVD, so they can watch all or a little as they wish.
In iMovie, I would use Ken Burns effect, change the timing, add audio, etc.  What I need is the best sequence of actions to make (ie most efficent, easiest?).
    1.  Do I make each iPhoto album into a slide show first and then import in iMovie as a video?  Or import all individual photos into iMovie and make the video from there?
    2.  Once it all gets into iMovie, is there a way to mark chapters for iDVD?  or do I do that in iDVD?
    3.  Some of what I read said I can do ALL of the above in iDVD, but support for that program is no longer available.
I am using a MacBook Pro and all software is the latest updates.  iDVD is 7.1.2
    Thanks!

You likely have one of the most expensive media converter boxes on the market today.
But does it work well with most macs? (my guess is that it does). But more specifically can it "handshake" with an intel based mac? I personally haven't tried it.
But you may want to read this for yourself if you haven't already:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1179361&tstart=2362
Assuming it works then the best format is .dv which this unit will support apparently.

  • When making a slideshow in iPhoto some iTunes files can no longer be found (cannot find link). How can I relink iphoto to the moved itunes files?

    Hello everyone :-)
I am Using Iphoto 09 ver 8.1.2 & itunes ver. 10.2.2 in this situation.
I have recently moved my iphoto library & Itunes library files to a large external hard drive.
I have successfully set the computer to read / run both libraries from the hard drive & they are working well as a stand alone. ( I Have done this before)
Unforntualey this time I foolishly moved some itunes album folders around from compulations / various artists into the main media file before checking into what the ramifications would be.
After searching on here I learned that was not advised as itunes would not be able to automaticly find them since I moved them.
In itunes clicked on some of the exclamtion marks of the songs that I moved & linked them up to the main media folder so they could be now found by itunes. I believe itunes asked to look there in that location for all missing files & I selected that option.
It appears to have worked as when I click on them in itunes they now play.. yeah!
But now I am finding that when I try to add certain songs for slideshows in iphoto & imovie that those moved songs cannot be found by those programs :-(
( I assume the same would be true for iDVD)
So my questions are... Is there now a way to have those other programs find the moved songs?
I do have a older backup of my itunes media & I can try & move the album folders back to the original place they where by comparing the two but it is a very large library of 40k songs... so I thought to ask the knowledge & wisdom of the community before I attempted any further fixes.
It would take a bit of time but it could be done & I don't want to just use the older copy of my itunes as I have made many additions of albums to the library & added allot of album artwork as well. (Stuff that "itunes" & "tune up" couldn't automatically find)
Thanks in advance for any advice on this silly mistake I made.
    Sal

Try the following:  delete the iPhoto preference file, <b><i><font color="maroon">com.apple.iPhoto.plist</font></i></b>, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Also delete the com.apple.iApps.plist file from the same Preferences folder.  Then launch iTunes and then iPhoto.  See if that will restore the links.

  • IPhoto, iMovie, or iDVD which is best for creating a slideshow?

I'm working on a project that's half slideshow, half video. The slideshow portion will incorporate music and the Ken Burns effect. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can actually use iPhoto, iMovie, or iDVD to do this, right? If so, what makes the most sense from a process standpoint? flexibility standpoint?
I ask because I've experimented and it seems like creating slideshows is significantly easier in iPhoto than in iMovie, but wanted to know people's thoughts.
    Thanks!

    Hi Terrabay:
I have side-stepped your question most of the day and now I see everyone else has too!
So, I feel someone needs to step up and give you some answers...but-just remember-I am an iMovie junkie, so you are not going to hear kudos to iPhoto from me! LOL!
I honestly do not know if your slideshow will look better with iMovie (all that DV you know...) but since you said that you are adding video- well....
    Go with iMovie-hey-no pain-no gain!
Seriously, iPhoto was made for photos and imovie for DV. You be the judge, but I think if you tinker with the iMovie options ( audio, transitions, titles, etc) you will see that iMovie is the way to make you memories live forever!
    Whew! That is almost creepy....

  • HELP: How do I use iPhoto 08 to import images onto my iPhone 3G?

    Hi,
I was wondering how best to import images into my iPhone 3G for viewing.
Most of my image files are large high quality 2 -4 MB files.
Is there an easy way to downsize the files for viewing on the iPhone 3G? Does iPhoto have a setting specific for import/export use with the iPhone?
How do I set a specific photo as the phone's wallpaper and does it have to be specifically sized to use as wallpaper?
I have read the iPhone 3G manual but it was less than helpful just saying "Use iPhoto to import photos onto your iPhone"...

here is a thread with lots of discussion of this topic - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1618079&tstart=105
In general you make album(s) of the photos you want on the iPhone and sync the album(s)

  • Slideshow in iPhoto - changing the theme for various slides to eliminate KB effect - doesn't "hold" through playback

I have made a couple of slideshows using iPhoto.  I used the Ken Burns effect as a theme (using my own music).  Many of the slides would not suit the KB effect (African animals) so I used the settings - change this slide to eliminate the KB effect for that slide - I also lengthened the duration that the slide played.  I found that the effect I wanted for the slides would be correct for the Preview, but then it would revert to the KB effect upon playing the slideshow.  Also, if I happened to move a slide to a different position, all the changes would have gone and I would have to repeat the exercise again!  Very time-consuming and frustrating.  Why won't the slides keep "their" instructions?  Also, I have had iPhoto crash a few times while I am making changes.
Can anyone help me sort this out?  I am presently exporting the latest slideshow to iTunes (and I've got my fingers crossed that all the changes I want are there)

NOt really. iPhoto is good for a quick and simple slideshow. For more complex work you need more powerful tools.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie is on every Mac sold.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

  • Using iphoto 4 -- thinking of ilife 6????

I am currently using iphoto/imovie/idvd 4/ thinking of going to ilife 6 (also I am on 10.3.9 - thinking of tiger)....what benefits will I see or will I just encounter a bunch of problems...like those posted.
Currrently everything is working fine but wanted to get some extra features from iphoto/imovie/idvd. I don't want to lose my pictures or movies or need to recreate everything.
    please advice.
    thanks

    teit 101:
IMO V6 is far superior to the V4 iapps. iDVD 6 alone is worth the price with it's new themes and and widescreen support. iPhoto 6 has a new file structure that I'm very much in favor of. You can search for some of my posts regarding the new structure. What I like about V6 is that you can create your own folder system for the originals and iPhoto 6 will import those as rolls and use aliases instead of copying the files into it's library. That way a user can have the originals on a second HD and the library on the boot drive. If the source drive is dismounted, like taking a PB on travel and leaving the external behind, you can still see the thumbnails but can edit or work on books, slideshow or calendars. Once the external drive is reconnected you're back in full mode. What this does is to let a user have a large number source files on an external and a much smaller library on the boot driver where you want to keep plenty of free space for optimal performance. My 17,400+ image files on my second HD take up 27G whereas the library on my boot drive is only 8G. A big savings.
V6 also is faster, has a great calendar creation feature, etc. The one downside it has IMO is that the Homepage has been replaced with iWeb and the two and not totally merge-able without some additional effort.
If you have any iDVD projects in process you do not want to upgrade until they are done. The new folder organization messes up the links that it needs.
I've created a workflow for converting from a conventional based library to the new "alias" type. The downside is that you will lose keywords, albums, comments, etc. Whatever route you take make sure you have a backup copy of your V4 library before the conversion. I probably would do a rebuild on the library before converting it to V6 to make sure everything is as pristine as can be for the conversion. Hope this has been of some help.

  • IPhoto, iMovie or iDVD

Trying to make slide show of daughter's wedding. Would like to be able to have a couple of movies also on it w/ a sound track from iTunes in the background. Ken Burns effect might be a nice touch. - Suggestions of which program would be best to use? Or a combination? Would like to be able to save to a DVD to be played on DVD player for TV use. As you can tell - a really extreme rookie here. Thanks for any insights.
    ~bruce.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico: http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie 6 as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast, for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 8 from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

    Hi,
I started using iPhoto today to resize some photos. As soon as I tried to edit a photo or export a number of photos at one time the program crashes. A blue screen appears for a second and then I am brought back to the user login screen.
I read on another thread that it may help if you use iPhoto from a different user account. I tried to create a new user account in system preferences but as soon as I clicked the create new user button the same blue screen appeared and again I was brought back to the user login screen.
Now my macbook pro is crashing randomly. I am now using another machine to type this question as my mac crashes as I try and submit this.
Prior to using iPhoto today my mac did not crash at all.
    Can anyone help?
