Help managing music physically stored on iPhone versus in iCloud

I wish to import and manage a library of music physically on my iPhone so that I do not have to rely on the iCloud when I want to listen to certain music or I am not in an area with strong signal etc. Is this still possible, or is the traditional model of synching physical music files from my Mac to the iPhone completely gone in the new era of iCloud music matching?
I have an iPhone 4s & all of my music in the iCloud. In iTunes (on my Mac) I have legacy playlists that appear to be on my iPhone but the music/playlists are not physically on my iPhone, and I have no ability to modify or delete these artifacts. At the very least, can someone assist me with removing these legacy playlists that curently have no function? (without having to reset my iPhone)
Any assistance or comment would be greatly appreciated.

Important:
When enabling iTunes Match on your iOS device, the music library on your iOS device will be deleted and then replaced with your music in iCloud.
Syncing music with iTunes will be disabled while iTunes Match is enabled on your iOS device.

  • How can I back up and restore my manually managed music from an old iphone to a new one?

At present, when I go to restore from a previous back up, my music is never transferred to the new device. I assume this is because I have the manually manage music option selected.
Is there a way to back up and add the same music and playlists etc from old iPhone to new iPhone without selecting the box that transfers everything from itunes?
As I have far more music than my iphone could ever take and I only want a selection. So if there is no way of doing this then I have to do it manually everytime? A very long winded task to go through entire itunes library picking it all out again!?!
    Any help would be appriciated!?

    Thanks very much!
Although I had to add everything again to the playlist, at least I can just copy it over in future!

  • Unable to manually manage music and videos on iPhone 4 without erase and sync, same computer!

Ok, so I know you all have heard this before but I do believe my case is rather unique, and quite frustrating.
I purchased an iPhone 4 and synced it to the same computer I am using now - created the playlist and used it to sync with phone. Worked great for awhile; but one day I contracted some nasty malware and had to wipe my computer and reinstall my OS (Windows 7). Albeit my music library was on my external HDD which survived the onslaught. I obviously had to reinstall iTunes afterwards. The playlist was gone on reinstall.
Afterwards I still didn't see an issue with my iPhone and iTunes: When I plug it in it syncs, everything seems to be working accordingly.
But I recently transferred some new music from a CD to my iTunes and wanted to throw those songs on my iPhone, the drag and drop method I was so very used to did not work and I noticed that "manually manage music and videos" was uncheck under my devices summary.
When I attempt to check this option in iTunes it gives me a popup notification telling me I need to erase and sync in order to use this option because my 'iPhone is synced with another library". Again, I DID have to reinstall iTunes after reinstalling my OS.
I have tried all the tricks that google could supply me with with no avail; authorizing, stopping the sync from automatically starting.... yada yada - none of these cookie cutter methods have worked for me.
    Here's a too long didn't read:
    >iPhone 4 was working fine - used playlist to sync with.
    >Had to reinstall OS (Windows 7) Playlist gone.
    >Reinstall iTunes.
    >iPhone still syncs with library, no error messages on connect.
    >Unable to manually manage music and videos without erase and sync.
    >None of the usual methods work.

Hmm, I will say after posting this and looking at the related threads it seems I can only either use manually manage or sync.
I was using sync before but since the playlist disappeared I was syncing with I simply want to add music to my phone without deleting everything. Is this possible?
If I use "manually manage music and videos" will it delete everything or just the music and videos? It doesn't specify...
Could I just create a new playlist and sync it with that? If so how?
The bottom line is it isn't that big of a deal if I need to simply rebuild my iPhone music library but losing my configuration, contacts etc is not an option. Optimally I would just like to be able to add my new music to my iPhone without having to rebuild my library.

  • Manually manage music and videos of iPhone 4s using pc

My computer crashed and clean reinstalled the operating system on my PC, I had to reauthorize the computer.
Now I installed iTunes and when I check Manually manage music & videos, it tells me:
that it's synced with other another iTunes library.
The Only option is erase and sync or Cancel
I had the computer backed up so that the good news, so I tried coping the files from the back up and putting it in my PC but did't work.
I went into preferences and under advanced changed the iTunes Media folder location to the hard hard drive that has my back up.
Thinking that would do it, it didn't work?
    Please help!
    Any suggestions

From your pc back up find the iTunes library and copy the entire library to your new computer.
Copy over your photos too plus any other important documents.
Once your iTunes library is on your new computer your should be able to start iTunes and sync to the new computer. Yes you will get the message that this is a new computer but the music etc. is the same as what was on the old computer.

  • Any reason to use "Manually manage music" over creating an iPhone playlist?

My new iPhone is my first iPod that's not big enough to hold all 319 of my albums. In fact, the limited capacity is the only reason it took me so long to buy one -- it's always seemed that the whole point of having an iPod is the ability to take it all with you.
Anyway, I just assumed that the way to choose 14GB or so worth of music was to create a playlist containing the albums I want to copy over, then sync that playlist with the new iPhone. It worked fine. But then I noticed the checkbox marked "Manually manage music and videos," and after some sleuthing it appears that it does the same thing.
Does it do anything that creating a playlist doesn't? If I switched to doing it that way, would the only upside be one fewer playlist?

Eric, if thats what you're more comfortable doing, i say, stick with it. i prefer to "manually manage" as i dont really use playlists. i'm one to just start a song and let the thing play at random. so i like it cuz when i obtain new mp3's, i can just drag and drop it into the phone. and the same the ohter way around, if theres a song i no longer want on the phone, i can delete it off the phone via itunes. all without having to set up playlists to sync.

  • Help transferring music to and from iphone from laptop

I have a new laptop and trying to transfer music is a nightmare! It asks if I want to overwrite my library (which I don't) and I tried to manually manage my music library and again, it asked if I wanted to overwrite.  All I want to do is put a few CDs on my iphone and get the music on my iphone on to itunes.  I have new Windows 8 if that makes any difference?

iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
Move or copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer, then simply sync the device.

  • HT1386 Help transferring music from itunes to iphone 5

On my new lap top I can't transfer music from my itunes library to my iphone 5 by dragging it to the right onto the the iphone icon. When I try to do so, it doesn't do the blinking thing and sync for some reason. I also don't want to press the "manually manage" box because then I would lose all the music on my iphone (including music I previously got from CDs and such) that isnt on this new laptop's itunes (because when I got this new itunes the only music that synced was the music on my phone that I purchased from itunes). If there's a way to transfer ALL the music from my iphone to this new laptop's itunes then I would just press manually manage, have it erase all my songs, and then just sync them again, but I don't know if that's possible. Any tips/advice?

Chances are you need to stop the Apple Mobile Device service, then restart iTunes.  Syncing should work at this time.  Follow these steps to stop the Apple Mobile Device Service.

  • Manually manage music with new iPhone and new MacBook?

I have a new iPhone 6 that auto syncs with an old MBP iTunes library. I just got a new MBA and want to manually manage music between my new iPhone and my new computer. I don't want to transfer all of my music files onto my new MBA in efforts to save space.
I just want to keep all the music files that are currently on my phone, and have the ability to add more files as needed from my NEW MacBook.
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi ksatia,
If you'd like to manually manage your content, which would allow you to sync content with multiple computers, then please take a look at the information in the article linked to below.

If I manually manage music to my iPod/iPhone/whatever, are play counts still included from music that I listen to on the device? Or will it only sync play counts if I'm syncing to a playlist?

How do you delete songs that you purchased through iTunes but don't show up when you connect the iphone to iTunes? They don't show up in the music section when you click on "On this phone". Side Note: I have my phone setup to manually manage music. Please help.

    Hi, Mrs.Frankie57.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you want to delete a song from your iOS device on iOS 7, tap Songs, swipe the song from right to left, then tap Delete. The song is deleted from iPhone, but not from your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, or from iCloud.

  • My wife can no longer transfer music from her library onto her iphone 3gs. When I click manage music manually it says she has another library, nothing has changed and everything is up to date. Help!

We have seperate profiles too, on our windows laptop, and seperate music libraries, and mine works fine... Managing music manually says she has another library connected, but this is simply not the case. When I check in preferences, it has the correct filepath... So now nothing from her library with transfer over. Using iTunes 11.01 but this happened on 11.

Why have Apple made this so bloody annoyingly complicated. She bought a downloader from the Apple store and downloaded music on her phone which I subsiquently downloaded to our laptop. I placed this music into the iTunes Folder. I even went ot the correct location to see if it was there, and it was! But now, nothing in her library will transfer, even purchased music. Clicking on the Manage Music Manually button only makes it say that she has more than one library and her phone will be wiped if she goes any further. What is the bloody story with iTunes!!? It looks lovely but works like something out of the dark ages. No wonder people are moving to Android in droves...
Anyway, any help, ideas or criticisms will be welcomed. Nothing I have tried (updates etc) has worked. I have checked the files in question, the format is fine, they even play in iTunes which means they must exist. I have physically checked this too, so what's the story???

  • Bought a new macbook and want to manually manage music onto my iphone 4s but when i click 'manually manage' and then 'apply' i get the message saying it will erase everything already on there. Need help please!

Bought a new macbook and want to manually manage music onto my iphone 4s (as it is already full of music from old windows laptop) but when i click 'manually manage' and then 'apply' i get the message saying it will erase everything already on there. Need help please!

Before you sync your iPhone make sure that all the music that was synced to your phonereviously has been copied to your iTunes on the new MacBook Pro. Then when you connect your phone you will be able to either sync all music or select only those playlists that you want on the phone.

  • Hi, just updated hubby's iPhone 4 and all of his music has disappeared from the iPhone and from the iTunes library! He does have music still stored on his iPod, but can't get it from the library on his iPod back to phone or itunes. technophobe help pls!

and all of his music has disappeared from the iPhone and from the iTunes library! Luckily he does have music still stored on his iPod, but I can't get it from the library on his iPod back to the phone or to itunes. Please help, but technophobe so put it in simple english please!

Sounds like the music you had on your phone was not the same music on his computer. The iPhone/iPod touch is not designed to be a storage device. When you sync with a computer that doesn't have your music, it deletes your music from your phone.
Was this music you purchased from iTunes? if so, and you are in the US, tap on itunes app, tap updates, tap purchased and tap on the cloud icon to get each song back. If you're not int he us, get iOS5 update later this week and do the same.
But you need to move your itunes library to his computer. Create a user account on his macbook pro for you. From your external drive backup, load your itunes library on it. Then sync as usual! (Don't tell me you don't have a backup for your computer!)

  • Help with manually managing music on iPhone

I set up my iPhone on my pc and just got a macbook. I want to manually manage music and video so I can use both, but when i set it up to do so on my pc my mac wants to wipe everything. How do i set it up to manually manage music on a mac and a pc?

An iPhone does not support want is called disk mode which is required for this.
An iPhone can be synced with iTunes content on a single computer only, and the same for manually manage music and video. You can sync contact information, calendar events, and bookmarks with multiple computers, but not with iTunes content, and the same for photos transferred from a computer to an iPhone.
If you want to sync iTunes content with your MacBook, you need to transfer your iTunes library from your PC to your MacBook.
