HELP ME almost nothing is going right.

OK so... I don't know where to start, but here I go...
Last week Software Update kept bugging me to update a bunch of things including iTunes, and so I did. When I restarted it like it asked me and logged in and everything, I tried to open iTunes, and instead the icon just bounced in the dock for 10 seconds and then stopped and a window popped up saying "iTunes quit unexpectedly" and I sent the report to Apple. I tried again and again and it still wouldn't work...
So then I tried to reinstall iTunes by going to apple.com and downloading the new version and installing it all again, but that didn't work. Then I tried a clean install of iTunes, deleting the copy I had, and the music folders, and going to Apple.com again and reinstalling it, which didn't work at all... And then I looked online for fixes to the problem and found a blog with a Terminal script that would remove iTunes 8.2 and then I installed iTunes 8.1.1 again, which didn't work.. So I tried to update iTunes again to version 8.2 and it still didn't work... I've tried A LOT of things, and none of them have worked... Disk Utility and everything too.
And this has affected the use of the built-in iSight camera too, and iPhoto, and GarageBand and almost every other program!!! Whenever I click the Photo Booth icon, just like iTunes, it just bounces
for 10 seconds and then quits "unexpectedly"... And I noticed that it isn't just Photo Booth, because when I tried to use the camera in Safari and also in iChat, it made both the applications just quit "unexpectedly"...
When I try to import photos into iPhoto it just quits "unexpectedly", and when I have iPhoto open and double click on a photo to zoom in/edit it it just quits "unexpectedly"... And In GarageBand when I press save, the program quits "unexpectedly". Aaaanddd... When I try to open an mp3 or m4a file in any program, it just crashes... Including QuickTime...
CAN YOU HELP ME!!?? Please? I'm about to like go crazy! I am a music FREAK and I also use my built-in iSight a lot for video chats, and this *****! I can't listen to any music at all!!! PLEASE if you have any ideas of what to do please help...
Some info you might want is that I do not have the discs that came with my computer so I can't re-install OS X if thats your recommendation.

Start by doing the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If the problem persists then do this:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.

2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
Or, if you maintain regular backups you can erase the hard drive and restore your backup (assuming the backup is from before you updated.)

I'm not convinced by the idea of write-behind caching - holding data in ram until the drive becomes free in order to reduce disk seeks. A minor potential performance benefit which means leaving the drive in an inconsistent state most of the time it's connected.
Whatever else is going on you I think you shoud disable write-behind caching. Connect the iPod, locate in Windows Explorer, right-click & click Properties, select the Hardware tab, select the Apple iPod USB device, click Properties, select the Policies tab, check Optimize for quick removal, click OK and click OK again.

  • After installing iTunes update I couldn't get into iTunes so I uninstalled but when I try to reinstall and click download now it goes right to thank you for downloading iTunes but nothing downloaded.

After installing the latest iTunes upgrade I could not access my iTunes so I uninstalled it and all of it's components like instructed in support but when I try to reinstall and click on download now, it goes right to thank you for downloading iTunes but nothing downloaded.

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

I stupidly uninstalled the version of iTunes I had working on my notebook when the update kept failing and am now unable to get anything happening at all.

I had probs with 7.2. Reloaded 7.1 works fine. I think 7.2 needs some more work before it will work for me.

On my iPhone 4, the Facebook app won't let me sign on with my account. I can sign on to another account just fine. The first time I sign on with the FB app it goes to the news feed page, says loading, and then flipps between loading and connection error.  If I close out of that and try to sign in again it locks up on the logging in page.  From Safari or google it goes to the log in page, after entering my email and password it goes right back to the log in page.  I have tried resetting my phone, deleting and re-installing the app and everything else I can think of.  Since I can log onto another account on my phone it can't be the app, any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

  • How to I produce a PDF which goes right to the edge on a Mac?

How to I produce a PDF which goes right to the edge on a Mac? I have recently moved to a Mac. I now have Acrobat X Pro 10.1.3, and Mac OS X 10.7.3. When I used Windows and Acrobat X Pro I was able to print to Acrobat to produce documents which went right to the edge on screen. Now on Mac I can only produce documents which have a border on them. I expect I am missing something quite fundamental, but it is frustrating me so I am seeking some help from those who know how to do this. Thank you in advance.

So I did a little exploring in Word for the Mac. I set the Word margins to 0 inches, then I placed a picture that went to the edges of the page.
The problem seems be that Word is very simple-minded, and when in the Print dialog, it adjusts the preview of the Print feature to the margins of the currently-selected printer. For my HP inkjet printer, that's about 1/8" in from the edges. When that data is passed to OS X to create a PDF, it uses those margins in the PDF file.
In Word for Windows, Acrobat installs a PDFMaker plug-in for Word. PDFMaker contols the creation of PDF so there are a lot more settings possible.
Acrobat has never made a plug-in for Word for the Mac. As to why, this has been debated endlessly for the past 15 or so years. Adobe claims that Microsoft doesn't provide the handles to do it in the Mac version of Word. Whether that's true, I don't know.

No, once a user has been created, you can't run Setup Assistant  (without erasing and reinstalling).
What do you recommend for fixing this?
    Here's what's happened:
When you first start up a Mac and create the first user account, OSX assigns it UID (User ID) #501.  The next one gets #502, etc.  Those UIDs (not the user name) are what control permission to files.
You can see those numbers via System Prefs > Users & Groups;  click the padlock and enter your Admin password, then select an account and right-click it, and select Advanced Options.  Do not change anything on that window.
So . . . assume your old iMac had a user 501 with the data you want; it's identified that way on the backups.
When the Apple Store started up your new Mac, and created their account, it became #501.
When you used Migration Assistant to transfer the 501 account from the iMac's backups, OSX copied everything there "as is" except it had to change the 501 to 502.
The new 502 account has all the right permissions to things now in it's home folder, but the backups belong to user 501.
Have you added much to the Mac since you did the migration?  Have you done any new backups?  If not, while it's a bit of a hassle, one fix would be to create yet another user account temporarily.  Make it an Admin account.  Log on to it and delete all the other accounts.  Then migrate the accounts from your backups; this time there won't be a conflict, so OSX won't have to change the UUID(s).
But if you have done new backups, this won't work, since Migration Assistant automatically uses the most recent backup.  There's a way around that, but it's a bit (or more) tedious.
    Clear as mud?

  • I tried to upload photos to Costco photo and was unsuccessful, since then I can not open my Iphoto on my desktop. It appears but goes right to the dashboard. A blue border is also around the entire IPhoto. What has happened?

As stated my IPhoto is not able to stay on the screen since I attempted to upload to Costco photo center. The Iphoto only appears if I hold the mouse down. Once I attempt to move the mouse it goes right back to the dashboard. Also, there is a blue border that appears.  Please help.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • FROZEN AT APPLE SCREEN-RESETS AND GOES RIGHT BACK TO BEING FROZEN

    PLEASE HELP!!
I am able to reset it but it goes right back to the frozen apple screen.
    Any idea?
    Thanks!

    Hi Raynalin,
Let's try something that I've seen successfully work several times with iPods that only show an Apple logo on the screen:
1 - Connect your iPod to a power source (some other sort of charger would be preferable, although your computer's USB should probably do).
2 - Toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a few times (leave it on the white side of the switch, which is the Off position).
3 - First, begin to reset your iPod: Press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for about 5 seconds. As soon as your iPod's screen goes dim (hopefully), let off of those buttons, and begin to press the center and Play/Pause buttons.
4 - If you do it right (or if your iPod complies), your iPod's screen should read "Disk Mode. OK to Disconnect". You can now disconnect your iPod from the power source, as soon as it reaches this screen.
5 - Now, connect your iPod to your computer. The main potential problem with this step is to get your iPod recognized by iTunes. But, hopefully, the iPod being in disk mode might help with that.
6 - Try restoring your iPod in iTunes. After it's connected, launch iTunes, click on your iPod's name in the left panel in iTunes, and click the "Restore" button (under the main "Summary" tab).
For more details on how to restore an iPod, check out this Knowledge Base article:
    Restoring iPod to factory settings
Any success after trying that? Or does something strange occur along the way? Be sure to mention if you get any sort of error messages with iTunes, or your PC.
    Keep us posted!

  • I can't find by CD or did I download it?  I want to start over because nothing is working right, picture are doubled.

I can't find my CD or did I download it?  Nothing is working right, I want to delete the Elements 13 and start over or use my old version.  My pictures in organizer aren't adding new pictures, nothing makes any sense.  I put in the files,  but all the files have the same pictures and I know I put in different files for different pictures.   I don't know what I'm doing but I could use the old Photoshop just  fine.  !@

    Hi,
Uninstalling and re-installing elements will not touch your catalog or your photos so at this stage I do not believe that you need to do it. You would need the serial number - do you have that?
When you are looking at the screen with Media, People, Places and Events in the heading, that is the organizer so you have found the organizer. The People, Places and Events tabs will probably be blank until you take action to update them.
From your other comments, I am assuming that you have converted your old Photoshop Elements 5 catalog to the new format. Note that the thumbnails will have to be regenerated so may appear as hour glasses for a while.
Now, with Albums selected on the left and Media selected in the middle, is there any button at the top saying All Media - if so click on it. That should be showing all of your photos that have been imported into the catalog. Do they all appear?
Here is an example of the Album list
Only ones with the album icon (see 2002 08 18 in example) are actually albums, the others are album categories. Only if you click on names with the icon will the display of images change. The album category can be opened or closed by clicking on the small triangle to the left of the name.
Does that help so far? I can cover Folder view later but want to make sure that your system is acting correctly.
